  1. Tea Partier GOP Congresswoman Michelle Bachmann had a victory party last night. It wasn't in the district she represents.
  2. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 3, 2010 -> 08:21 AM) IMO, "Messaging" has jack squat to do with anything except the defeats of the crazies at the margins. Getting your message out doesn't make 9.6% unemployment acceptable, and it won't make 10% unemployment acceptable in 2012 after the government goes for spending cuts. I think the 60 seat loss could have been a 30 seat loss had the party actually forced the GOP to hold middle class tax cuts hostage for the highest tax brackets keeping their cut.
  3. QUOTE (lostfan @ Nov 3, 2010 -> 12:36 AM) That whole argument doesn't really have any basis in fact, it's just some s*** talking heads talk about on TV. Democrats lost for a few reasons... but most of all the economy, then the fact that they had won more seats than they could reasonably support, then they just got scared of defending who they are and what they represent and got intimidated by the Tea Party... sigh. Typical Democrats. I wish we had the clarity of message that the Republicans have. But if we did, I probably wouldn't be a Democrat either.
  4. That guarantees 51 for Dems in the Senate, 53 if Bennet and Murray can hold on.
  5. QUOTE (The Baconator @ Nov 2, 2010 -> 09:14 PM) Being a Field Organizer through Blanche Lincoln's primary and moving over to the coordinated campaign in June, tonight stings. Nine months in Arkansas to have the race called with 0% reporting. f***. That always sucks, because field work is hard thankless work that is a constant s***show. I know, I've done my share. But you can learn from this and take it to the next campaign. Your work, if its built upon can pay dividends. Case in point: I ran field for a ward race in Trenton, NJ this spring. Our candidate won and turned it out in a way that nobody but us was expecting. Because our Congressman took advantage of the base we built, he turned out the vote in Trenton bigger than they see in most state wide races - that's a big deal. It actually was the margin of victory. And he did it in less time and with far less money than most candidates would spend to get that kind of turnout. Your work mattered. And your work can lay a great foundation for what follows.
  6. QUOTE (lostfan @ Nov 2, 2010 -> 11:27 PM) A slim house majority in a midterm election is a mandate but passing legislation that was campaigned on by the party that won the executive branch in a landslide through a supermajority is not legitimate and basically amounts to treason and un-American activity. Typical Republican logic, people will see nothing has changed. Let's be honest, its not a slim majority. It's a pretty robust one when its done. The biggest casualties tonight btw? Blue Dogs. My candidate won narrowly. Was happy to help in a small way.
  7. So today is gonna suck for Democrats. Probably gonna go to my Congressman's victory party since I'm working GOTV like I do every year, but I am actively going to avoid election coverage and "analysis" tonight, like I generally try to do every night.

  9. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 30, 2010 -> 12:27 PM) I really hope someone contracted out for a satellite photo of rally size. CBS contracted to the same service as they did for Beck's rally.

  13. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 14, 2010 -> 11:09 AM) That is actually a great comparison. I can't believe how many people have latched on to her as some example of the Tea Party's leadership and ideals, just like they did Palin, when the reality doesn't support that. I guess I have a hard time understanding how she doesn't represent the Tea Party when she was funded by Tea Party Express and got her nomination because of the work of Delaware 9/12ers. If that's not being the visible leadership of the Tea Party, I don't know what is.
  14. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 14, 2010 -> 09:17 AM) I saw an article about that debate. Apparently, when asked to comment on a recent Supreme Court decision that she didn't like or agree with, she couldn't remember a recent USSC decision. At all. She was already behind by 19 points in the last poll, and apparently she struggled in the debate. I'd say she has basically no chance, which is good - one less crazy to worry about getting into office. Anyone know if Reid and Angle have a debate scheduled? I saw some of the debate in a bar, and I remember thinking to myself that Wolf Blitzer must have been really gassy, because she had a sneer on her face like someone was violently farting the whole time!

  16. Sharon Angle needs to represent Nevada in the Senate because fake towns in Texas are ruled by Sharia law. http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/archives/...0_10/026080.php
  17. QUOTE (Cknolls @ Oct 12, 2010 -> 03:08 PM) Jake Tapper, ABC: TAPPER: But what do you say to people who argue you are demonizing an organization for a charge that nobody knows if it’s true or not? AXELROD: Well I’m not demonizing the Chamber of Commerce. I’m simply suggesting to them that they disclose the source of the $75 million that they are spending in campaigns and put to rest, put to rest the questions that have been, that have been raised. TAPPER: Isn’t that like the whackjobs that tell the president he needs to show them his full long-form birth certificate so he can put to rest the questions that have been raised? AXELROD: The president’s birth certificate has been available to people. TAPPER: The long form? Absolutely assinine that this is in the news. But, you have to rally the base somehow, despite how patently dishonest and slimy you look. I can't figure out what you think is assinine. The idea that people want the Chamber of Commerce to disclose who is funding their millions of dollars in partisan political advertising or that people are still talking about the President's birth certificate?

  19. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Oct 7, 2010 -> 04:01 PM) Do you have a link for that info anywhere? Because I heard on the radio today that this wasn't the first fire at this guys place, and the last time he hadn't paid either. But I can't find that online anywhere. My source was the radio driving into work yesterday morning, but I do think that the point is irrelevant. So is the point about him having his property insured. Personally, I think that if a public entity chooses to offer fire protection for some of its citizens, it should offer that protection for all of its citizens. That's why we pay taxes in the first place.
  20. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Oct 6, 2010 -> 07:22 PM) He only had to 'opt in' because he didn't pay any taxes to that town at all, much less for fire service. I agree they probably should have put it out and then billed him to the max, but he sort of deserved it for taking a gamble that failed. How will people learn if you bail them out of their mistakes all the time? He was aware of the lack of fire coverage, and aware of the opt in fee to BE covered by a neighboring town to which he paid no taxes. He chose. Poorly. Apparently he paid every year prior to this year, and the bill just didn't get paid this year and it was unintentional FWIW.
  21. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Oct 7, 2010 -> 01:24 PM) IIRC when the bill originated in the house the republicans were shut out of the meetings. Then, to try and save face, the senate offered up a bi-partisan meeting to discuss the various provisions of the bill, but basically stated out front that it was their way or the highway. The WH also chimed into the debate, again "inviting" the GOP to various meetings, but ultimately they were nothing more than "you can sit in the meeting but it's not like we're going to do anything you want." and IIRC, the stimulus was cut by moderate dems, not any concessions of the GOP. Even still, my point was the bi-partisan efforts aren't real 95% of the time, and it's not ONLY the GOP. Most of the time it's the party not in power, because the main selling point at election time is ALWAYS "they've screwed everything up and did everything wrong and we voted the opposite way so vote for us and we'll make it better." The stimulus was 50% tax cuts. And if you don't think there wasn't an effort to bring Republicans into the fold by esentially creating a smaller immediate stimulus as a result, you're really really mistaken.
  22. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Oct 6, 2010 -> 12:31 PM) I think he means you'd be stuck with the bill for the operation, which would be in the thousands of dollars. Exactly, The first 10,000 dollar brush fire on my land would make me remember to make my 75 dollar annual payment from that moment forward.
  23. QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Oct 5, 2010 -> 02:06 PM) Kool Beanz! Except now I have a list of 52 films to whittle down. If your list doesn't include "The Stuff," I don't think I know who you are anymore.
  24. QUOTE (lostfan @ Oct 5, 2010 -> 06:43 PM) Libertarianism run amok here. I've heard the idea of pay-per-service for fire before and it's such a terrible idea. I had trouble explaining why until this happened. I think I'd even be ok with paying the annual fee - with the understanding that you'd have to pay for the service used if you don't, but this is ridiculous and a little heartless.
