I'm sorry, but I am listening to people in charge of federal disaster relief and they have heads up their collective ass. Sec of Homeland Security Michael Chertoff was asked about the thousands of people stranded at the Convention Center on NPR this afternoon and said they didn't exist. Apparently he didn't turn on CNN, Fox News or anyone else today. NPR went back to the reporter who filed the report minutes before and said - these people have been here for three days and are being told to go here and NOTHING happens. They are chanting for help but none comes. They are living in their own filth. A lot of them couldn't afford to leave. The average income for a black person in New Orleans is under 12 thousand dollars. It was the end of the month. It took our president three days to say a thing on the damn storm. We couldn't send a hospital ship to Florida in advance of the storm? Instead we keep it in Virginia and don't send it in until 3 days after we realized what happened? Thats a week now before it gets to New Orleans. By the time the hospital ships get to Louisiana, the people its coming to help will be dead. Today he said, "we didn't anticipate the levees breaking." Funny, I read USA Today on Monday morning. There was an article talking about how it was likely that a levee would break. CNN carried the story on Sunday. If the press figured it out, and the Army Corps of Engineers said that it would happen as early as 1995 in this situation, why didn't he realize it until yesterday? I'm not blaming anything on anyone. All I'm saying is that we didn't get ready to keep this from happening - and we could have.

Is anyone wondering why aid wasn't better planned?
-
By the way, don't know about where you're at - but top off today. Apparently gas stations here are expecting another 50 cent increase overnight.

Happy Birthday Tex. You knee jerk liberal conservative

Canada is sending a Search and Rescue team today down there. Apparently they have planes full of relief supplies just waiting for US go ahead to send over too but the US Government has not made a decision on whether to accept foreign aid yet.

30.5 each way. Plus I add 40-60 miles a day at work for my job. Unpaid.

I gassed up for 2.46 on Sunday. I topped off Tuesday morning at 2.51. Today I topped off at 2.89. The pump jockey told me tomorrow it would go up to 3.19.

QUOTE(kapkomet @ Aug 31, 2005 -> 08:09 PM) Hold the phone. I have a major announcement. f*** YOU to every one of these assholes who start this s*** right now. Man, I hate our country when this s*** starts, I really do. I agree. There are so many things to be pissed off about right now. Why are you blaming anyone for a f***ing hurricane?

I do have that car, and I'm getting nearly 35 miles to the gallon.

The gays. http://www.repentamerica.com/pr_hurricanekatrina.html The abortions. http://www.salon.com/politics/war_room/ind...cane/index.html Nobody's mentioned the casinos yet though...

You think that's bad? Try living in New Jersey. 1100 a year for Car Insurance. at 3.00 a gallon, that's 30+ a tank in my Scion. I use 2 and a half tanks a week for work. And I don't get any mileage allowance. So I'm now spending 300 a month for gas. Thats another car payment.

I hated Nextel service. I liked Sprint, but I've been having customer service issues with them this year. After the merger, you'll see Nextel be a lot more like Sprint - just so you know.

QUOTE(Kid Gleason @ Aug 29, 2005 -> 02:56 PM) Now, now...Monty Python And The Holy Grail was Gilliam...and that was friggin' brilliance on all levels. Yes, but I don't count that. That was more Monty Python and less Terry Gilliam.
-
Its not a kids movie. It's a Terry Gilliam movie where story is sacrificed for visuals. Like every Terry Gilliam movie, visuals come first. Which are - quite stunning at times.

The strategy is to give up Gaza, and take over West Bank full . They are hoping that free passage in Gaza will make more palestinians move from the West Bank where for non-Israelis travel from town to town a few miles over will take hours. In the mean time, they can expand larger settlements in West Bank and really grow actual Israel as part of an eventual compromise.
-
I'm willing to bet that won't happen.
-
I do. The Swift Boat Vets started with money. They were well funded out of the gate. Are there people latching onto Cindy Sheehan? Yes. Does that change what she's out there to do? No.
-
If you think pulling out of Gaza is appeasement, you haven't figured out what Israel is actually doing.
-
It gets worse. Buy gas now and you can probably save about 30 cents a gallon. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20050828/ap_on_...ane_katrina_oil

I read the book earlier this year. I thought it was very good at really displaying emotions and capturing the drama and difficulties of dealing with a family member or child with a severe learning disability like autism. What I loved best about it was that the book's emotion pours out, despite the fact that it appears to be written so passionatelessly.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Aug 27, 2005 -> 09:01 AM) For me its what came first, the chicken or the egg? Is she just another Willie Horton production put together by a partisian PR machine? You can tell by the words she uses that part of her motivation is to take down Bush, heck she has called for his impeachment, if she is someone's mouthpiece should we know that? Yeah, we should. But - the first week she was there, it was her and a tarp. As crazy as she may be, people were touched by her story.

Okay there was Ronald, The Grimace, The Hamburgler
Rex Kickass replied to RibbieRubarb's topic in SLaM
Grimace used to have six arms and steal your shakes too. There was lots of theft in McDonaldland before Mayor McCheese got Big Mac to clean it up. -
So, people with money, heard a media savvy mother's story and chose to support it by making her ordeal more bearable. So what? This is just another way to spin Cindy Sheehan as being some sort of "enemy of the state" which is bulls***. She might be bats***crazy, but she's not unpatriotic. She's not an enemy of the state - she's just weird. But she has a story that a lot of people attached to. This happens all the freakin time. It's a nonstory.

The 700 Club reaches - by their (in my opinion) generous guess, about one million people. If mainstream America consists of just one million people, well I'd be a bit surprised. Let me put it to you this way, more people watch Pat Robertson guesting on Fox News (who called him a "has-been" this past week) than actually watch Pat Robertson.
