  1. *waits for obvious joke involving Saddam's Weapon of Mass Destruction*
  2. I really like Liebeskind's design. The WTC was amazing for the architectural feat it was at the time. To reproduce it today would be, well, kinda boring.
  3. QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ May 19, 2005 -> 01:16 PM) If they didn't have an agenda then why print something as inflammatory as this without checking their facts first. As a prominent member of the print media they have a responsibility when they're going to print something that will have an impact on US policy and US soldiers to ensure that what they're saying is, in fact, accurate. None of that matters to them obviously and as a result of their shoddy journalisim people are dead, our efforts to rebuild Afghanistan took a major hit and our soldiers were put at risk. This is inexcusable. Those responsible for running this story should all be fired. Nuke: check your facts, you'll find the Pentagon did not respond to queries involving this article from Newsweek until a week after publication. The Pentagon did not deny the allegation, nor did they confirm it. They had no comment. You'll also find that the military commander for Afghani operations say that the riots had very little, if nothing, to do with the Newsweek article. I guess I'll defer my judgment to the guy who's boots are actually there.
  4. First they blamed Clinton, then they blamed the Democrats, then it was Dan Rather, now it was Newsweek. If the United States is being held hostage by a small article in the front of Newsweek and it causes "irreperable damage." If that damages our goals so much, why are we even bothering to fight a war in the first place. Maybe we should be more concerned with making states we invade more secure and less with what a news magazine publishes. By the way, the Pentagon didn't even deny the report until a week after it was published.
  5. QUOTE(kapkomet @ May 17, 2005 -> 05:04 PM) I understand your premise, and no, they shouldn't be shut down, but on the other hand, where's the accountability to get it right? Where's the proof that this caused the taking of 14 lives? Did Newsweek order the Pakistani embassy to open fire on a crowd of protesters?
  6. You know what concerns me? We're blaming Newsweek for the Pakistani government opening fire on Afghani protesters. Last year, the Bush administration was releasing oppo research on journalists, not Kerry or his surrogates. Now they're all but charging Isikoff with murder because he made the error of assuming something in a government report because of his sources. Polls are being issued asking if Newsweek should be shut down. What does it say about this country that we're talking about shutting down media instead of protecting its freedom?
  7. Not at the lives of 15 people half a world away.
  8. I preferred the Good Times series finale. They finally got out the ghetto! And the All in the Family series finale, which was really the season premiere of season 2 of Archie Bunker's Place.
  9. QUOTE(TheBigHurt35 @ May 17, 2005 -> 08:52 AM) And the liberal media has an interest in doing anything to bring down the Bush administration. Hell, they've already been caught reporting a fabricated story (Memogate). Why should we assume that Newsweek's story is legitimate? Actually, the story on the Bush guard story was mostly accurate. The documents were forgeries, but it did not alter the crux of the story. But lets look in depth at this issue shall we? Newsweek said that an internal military investigation was "expected" to find Quran abuse at Gitmo. It cited an anonymous source who has since backed away from his allegation. However, a former translator at the camp, made similar charges in a book published this year where he talks about the same thing. Gitmo detainees have also filed suit in US Court alleging the SAME thing in October 2004. This is not a new story. And this involves an investigation over irregularities and abuses taking place at a Prison Camp run by the US military where the evidence is showing a systemic pattern of abuse that is pretty much being acknowledged when hundreds of the people being held there have had nothing to do with Terrorism and had been held there months, and in some cases years, after the US military determined these individuals to be neither a past or future threat. Here's a great quote from our Secretary of Defense. He said that today. Maybe the President should have taken his advice two years ago when he told possible Iraqi terrorists I guess my point here is, I don't defend Newsweek for what they did. But I will say that to blame Newsweek for the death of rioters in Afghanistan for a small article in the front section of the magazine is irresponsible in its own right.
  10. QUOTE(TheBigHurt35 @ May 17, 2005 -> 09:06 AM) No, it was Saddam's fault for not allowing UN weapons inspectors to do their jobs. Or maybe our fault for not listening to a lot of our own intelligence. But that's neither here nor there. There was more than enough information out there, not being reported in the US mainstream media, that threw that issue's credibility into question. They chose, irresponsibly, to not report it. If it had been reported, the battle over Iraq may have been fought differently or not at all. Does that make them responsible for the deaths of 1500+ soldiers?
  11. QUOTE(EvilMonkey @ May 17, 2005 -> 07:53 AM) Half indignant is a hell of a lot better than rioting and killing people. You may remember the incident a while back with the so-called piece of art by Andres Serrano’s called Piss Christ, which was a crucifix in a jar of urine and blood. While there were shouts of protest from all the religious groups, I don't recall any riots. In fact, there seemed to be lots of liberals defending this artists 'right' to create such a piece. Maybe the people who supposedly flushed the Koran down the toilet should have applied for a NEA grant. They could have called it performance art. Hey, way to compare art to an interrogation.
  12. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ May 17, 2005 -> 07:39 AM) Yeah that is a cute soundbyte and all, but don't doubt the power of the media. How many people died as a direct result of the media playing messages of hate for the Tutsis, and inflaming the Hutus to kill them in the Rwandan genocide in 1994? Is the guy who gives a monkey a gun responsible at all when the monkey shoots someone with it? Last time I checked, Newsweek is not state run radio. If you blame the deaths of a dozen Afghanis who probably don't know what Newsweek is on Newsweek, does that mean any media that reports on abortion clinics is indirectly responsible for the bombing of a clinic because if the news wasn't reported, maybe that assclown that bombed the place wouldn't be so upset?
  13. QUOTE(jackie hayes @ May 16, 2005 -> 09:50 PM) Sutcliffe is calling this? Tadahito and Pods really have been impressive. Looks like Sutcliffe. The guy in the beard is a tool either way.
  14. What the hell was that flashback to the dugout on ESPN? They may not have said this, but I heard "Look at the cute Japanese player? He's so cute and Japanese." I need them to take the lead here.... I need Shingo to get the win for my fantasy team.
  15. Nice hit by the Gooch. BTW: Rick Sutcliffe should never ever be allowed to call a Sox game again.
  16. Does this mean that the So Called Liberal Media is responsible for the death of thousands of US soldiers for not adequately investigating the claims about weapons of mass destruction?
  17. I remember hearing stories to this effect for over a year... but that being said, the maxim holds true..... Guns don't kill people, Newsweek does.
  18. But not objectionable enough most of the time to stop a nominee.
  19. I love lording our record over Yankees fans out here... this year IS special!
  20. I miss having the CBC on my cable to watch their election night. It's interesting coverage to say the least.
  21. Its either that or an insanely elaborate publicity stunt. I think the ghost of Andy Kauffman might be in this thing.
  22. Not so much the Cubs themselves as much as Cubs fans. There's a built in rivalry because Chicago shares two teams... to be honest, during the season - the Indians and the Twins piss me off the most because they're the two teams in our division that we have to contend with. There's only seven games a year with the National League that really matter and something tells me that this year, we won't have to worry about the Cubs being there.
  23. By definition, this would not be a dissection but rather a vivisection. That is all.
