QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jul 19, 2012 -> 06:04 PM) You have to drive or take public transportation to vote right? What's the difference? Actually, for the vast majority of people, you shouldn't have to drive or take public transportation. In fact, with one exception, I've walked (or would have been able to easily walk) to every polling location I've used. And in most cases, there are always services that will take you to the polls for free. In fact, almost any campaign will do that. Something tells me if the Obama campaign started offering to pay for the cost of state ID's, there would be a giant s***storm about paying for a vote.

QUOTE (Y2HH @ Jul 19, 2012 -> 05:58 PM) For me this has nothing to do with voting. It has to do with having valid/official picture ID so you can validly and easily identify yourself in times of need. It's 2012. We live in an increasingly digital world where proper identification should be carried at all times by all peoples, or at least some demographic over age 15 or so. At some point in their oh so busy lives, they can find the time/transportation to get a f***ing ID...they're already free for people. They are not free for most people in most states. A national ID (passport card) costs over $30. In Texas, a state ID costs $16. You can argue that this is not a seriously high cost, but its still a barrier to voting - and one that costs money to overcome. Paying money to be able to vote sounds an awful lot like a poll tax to me.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_W._Bus...ice_controversy It was based a lot more than some discovered files that found its way to Dan Rather.

You may also want to consider working for cities. Many urban areas, especially those with some degree of budget instability often look for grant-writers to help supplement annual budget shortfalls and take necessary programs off the financial plate for a while.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jul 19, 2012 -> 02:14 PM) So some of, but not all, of the Swift Boat guys can't really back up what they allege because they didn't witness what they say they witnessed. That doesn't mean their claim that Kerry received medals without earning them, thanks to his social background, and general anti-American views as expressed after the war, are wrong. I don't think that argument works, does it? I wasn't arguing anything regarding the Swift Boat folks. I said that the forged document that Dan Rather uncovered doesn't make the rest of the story wrong.

QUOTE (CrimsonWeltall @ Jul 19, 2012 -> 01:38 PM) The Dan Rather thing was an incident of s***ty journalism, not a political smear campaign. Swiftboating is the far better term. IIRC, the document was bogus, but that doesn't mean that the story was wrong. Just because one piece of corroborating evidence was false, doesn't mean the baby gets thrown out with the bathwater.

I have eaten at Chick-Fil-A in the past. I will not eat there in the future. I choose to do business with people who recognize me as a person, the owners of Chick-Fil-A clearly do no such thing.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jul 18, 2012 -> 02:42 PM) No, he's just been in charge of the country that isn't creating jobs. That's the counter Romney's campaign has hit pretty well. Instead of relying on his community activist experience as a reason why he'd be a good President, we've now had 3 years of him as President as a reason why he's not a good President. I guess I don't see some great advantage to this Romney/Bain thing. It's too complicated for the average voter to care about, so they're not going to care. We're talking about two very rich guys acting as though they understand the plight of an average American. How much control of that he has is, of course, debatable. However, the private sector has been growing jobs for over 2 years consecutively, adding over 4 million jobs since the moment where job growth bottomed out. That's more than the private sector job growth seen during both Bush 41 and Bush 43 combined.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 17, 2012 -> 11:21 AM) Sears or Hancock? The restaurant is in the Hancock. The Sears Tower does have the highest bathrooms relative to street level in the Western Hemisphere though. Thanks, wikipedia!

Isn't there a restaurant on the 104th Floor?

I always loved the Sears Tower as a building, but the truth is that the better view was on the John Hancock building. It's location in the Skyline is just better.

For all the Jesse Jackson Jr. speculation, the conventional wisdom is this issue is about serious mental illness and not drug abuse. A really thoughtful piece in Slate today about it: http://www.slate.com/articles/health_and_s...l_illness_.html

Rumor is, Condi is on the VP shortlist for Mittens. That should work well: she's pro-choice.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 11, 2012 -> 10:02 AM) You do realize that NYC isn't the whole country, right? The New York subways alone host 1.6 billion trips annually. That doesn't account for any commuters on Metro North, Long Island Rail Road, Staten Island Railroad, New Jersey Transit, PATH train, or MTA buses, Long Island buses, Bee-Line buses, NJ Transit express buses, Academy express buses or CT Trans buses into the city - or Amtrak commute from Philadelphia and Outstate Connecticut metro areas.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 11, 2012 -> 07:29 PM) NONE OF YOUR f***ING BUSINESS THATS WHAT I'm gonna guess its either A. drug/alcohol rehab (although that doesn't seem to be it) or B. nervous breakdown. He really should step aside so that someone can run who would benefit his district.

QUOTE (kapkomet @ Jul 8, 2012 -> 10:41 PM) He's a right of center Democrat (you know, like the party used to be before the "dirty hippees" took over). There's nothing about Chris Christie that would put him in the Democratic Party. He's a guy who has made his entire governorship on taking a dump on public employees.

Here's a sampling of Congresspeople who complained about having to vote on PPACA with limited time to read the bill, yet managed to fully interpret the Supreme Court's 193 pages of opinion within an hour. http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_pol...eading_it_.html

QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Jun 29, 2012 -> 01:21 PM) Have you really been seeing threats of "I'm leaving" other than some rubes in a chatroom? because it is usually the Democrats that run, like Indiana and Wisconson legislators, when they don't get their way. Or the CBC during the Holder vote. And 17 idiotic tweets doesnt' count. You can find 17 people to say Ohman didn't suck. Rush Limbaugh in 2010 threatened to move to Costa Rica actually. On the air. Costa Rica also has socialized medicine. I hate magic so much, I'm moving to Hogwarts!

QUOTE (Soxfest @ Jun 28, 2012 -> 06:08 PM) Good luck with that. It will be like Alec Baldwin who said he would leave USA If Obama got elected...........still here. I just think its funny that to escape a country where "socialism" requires you to have health insurance, you want to move to Canada where there's no such thing as socialized medicine.
-
At least 17 people on Twitter decided to escape Obamacare "socialism," they will be moving to Canada. Which has socialized medicine. http://www.buzzfeed.com/daves4/people-movi...se-of-obamacare

QUOTE (Soxfest @ Jun 28, 2012 -> 04:35 PM) All Dems walking out right now on Holder vote should be voted out. Let's act like 3 year olds. You could make the argument that blocking a vote on Flood Insurance until someone gets his vote on when life begins is acting like a three year old. Walking out of a chamber to protest a vote is called protesting, not being childish.
