  1. QUOTE (Reddy @ Feb 17, 2012 -> 09:06 AM) you can control what i wish now? that MIGHT be overstepping the bounds of moderatorship. You can wish all you want in private. But in the Filibuster, the only thing we don't tolerate are posters publicly wishing for the death of a person.
  2. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Feb 15, 2012 -> 01:25 PM) And I think that's where this case falls apart and probably was a gigantic waste of time/money/resources. There are no damages here other than, what, embarrassment? But it's only embarrassment if we're determining that homosexuality is somehow bad or unsightly or something that should be kept private. There's nothing necessarily bad or unsightly when it comes to being a poor math student, but my high school administration chose to reveal my transcripts without consent to my employer in an attempt to get me fired. (This actually happened.) Although being bad at algebra isn't innately bad, there was clearly an intent to damage my reputation with my employer (who thankfully did not care.) I feel the same argument applies here. There's nothing wrong with being gay. However, my sexual orientation is as private as I choose to make it - and if I choose to keep it private and a secret, revealing my orientation without my consent is clearly an intent to damage my reputation with someone who may not view being queer in quite the same positive light.
  3. QUOTE (Tex @ Feb 7, 2012 -> 06:19 PM) I thought you posted somewhere there was an appeal process that may knock those down to misdemeanors. It seems like a fair plan to appoint an interim and once any and all appeals are exhausted, then replace him. I would hope at some point he would resign. Maybe if I lived there I could work up a little more venom. But it wasn't like he stole an election, had he filed properly he still would have won. He was found guilty of fraud and theft. He moved out of the town he lived in as an elected official, lied about where he lived - took a paycheck he wasn't entitled to and voted in a district he wasn't entitled to. I'll be honest, if this was any other statewide position OTHER than the one responsible for enforcing election laws, I probably wouldn't have as big of a problem with using an address in another voting district - but the paycheck thing? That's egregious and corrupt and politicians who violate the public trust in this way should get everything that's coming to them.
  4. This is pretty offensive. Fake pidgin english? Seriously? www.debbiespenditnow.com
  5. QUOTE (Tex @ Feb 7, 2012 -> 11:05 AM) He violated a law that seems about to me as bad as a cop speeding five miles over the limit. Not certain I would punish it that severely. And I support allowing him due process before removing him from office. He had due process. And was found guilty on five counts.
  6. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 7, 2012 -> 12:38 PM) That kind of reinforces my point actually. Obama gets "Change of position", Romney gets "Flip-flopper". I know which I would rather have. Maybe if Romney waited til the next paragraph in a speech to contradict himself, it wouldn't be as appropriate.
  7. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 7, 2012 -> 09:48 AM) I'd rather they throw the book at him personally. Agreed. And rather than standing with their guy, the GOP ought to be ostracizing them. His actions put the GOP's status as a party at risk in a state where that shouldn't even be in question.
  8. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 7, 2012 -> 09:35 AM) So, another day of actually having votes cast. Minnesota, Colorado, and a non-binding something or other in Missouri. Colorado is probably strong territory for Romney, the others are more interesting, and some data is showing surprising enduring strength for Santorum. If Newt can't pull out a win in Minnesota, its hard to see a path to Sooper Tuesday for him, because in terms of states won, it'll be Mittens 4, Santorum 3, Gingrich 1.
  9. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Feb 7, 2012 -> 09:34 AM) I'm cool with looking the other way if Republicans agree to never whine about the fake cause of VOTER FRAUD!!! as a cover for disenfranchising poor voters ever again. There's also the matter of defrauding the town he moved out of as well.
  10. The moment I'm waiting for is February 23. That's when White Sox players start to show up and work out, and Ozzie is just the manager of the team with the hideous Lisa Frank home run display.
  11. QUOTE (Tex @ Feb 6, 2012 -> 06:38 PM) Don't look at the title of the laws he broke, look at what he actually did. That is what I based my opinion on. Violated election laws while running to be the arbiter of election law? Yeah, that's what he did.
  12. Borrowed from http://www.dailykos.com. It seems the road to the superbowl is paved with gay marriage.

  14. QUOTE (SuperSteve @ Feb 3, 2012 -> 09:46 PM) Mentally, I give Armstrong a pass about lying to us all these years because of all the good he seemingly has done for the world. It's like he has a hall pass in my head. I give Armstrong a pass because I don't think using steroids is cheating anymore than the hundreds of other legal things that athletes do to condition their bodies. But that's just me.
  15. QUOTE (Tex @ Jan 30, 2012 -> 01:43 PM) Personally, it seems like such a minor issue and the punishment doesn't seem like it fits the offense. I'm glad it would be a Republican appointing a Republican, I've never like political party switches during these times. I'm sorry, but it isn't that minor when you consider that this person ran to be in charge of enforcing election laws. And he was found guilty last night. http://www.indystar.com/article/20120204/N...xt|IndyStar.com Mitch Daniels has appointed an interim Secretary of State - just in case these six convictions are lessened to misdemeanors, in which case the Governor can (and from the tenor of his press release will) give Charlie White his job back. I think its more than fair to point out that the Republican party considers Mitch Daniels to be one of their stars waiting in the wings. This governor, a part of the party that has made it a point to rail against voter registration fraud, and push to make it more difficult to vote, is standing by his fellow party member who has been convicted of three counts of voter fraud - dealing specifically with voter registration.
  16. QUOTE (Tex @ Feb 1, 2012 -> 09:52 PM) Dude, I could not figure out how the hell it got on some of those places. It was like someone held the guy in the air and flung him around. And damn, it must have happened like five minutes before I opened the door. It nearly ruined my Hunger Buster and Blizzard Why did you bring them into the bathroom with you?
  17. Actually, they didn't fully reverse course. http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/plum-l...tS9mQ_blog.html Call me skeptical til they start awarding Planned Parenthood grants. I think the real story with this organization is about how awful of a charity this really is. 20 cents on the dollar goes to breast cancer research, and another 15 cents goes to cancer screening efforts. If they really cared about finding a cure, you'd think they'd give more to research than they spend on overhead. But instead, the bulk of their money is on public awareness about breast cancer. So that companies can do things like sell a Susan G Komen Breast Cancer awareness handgun. http://seattle.cbslocal.com/2012/02/03/gun...l-pink-handgun/
  18. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Feb 2, 2012 -> 09:08 AM) Were Obama's favorables among independents heavily impacted like Romney's have been? Obama's average favorability never dipped below 50%, Romney's favorability is around 30% today.
  19. QUOTE (lostfan @ Jan 27, 2012 -> 10:11 PM) Hillary said some clumsy line talking about her supporters in certain states and she said "hard-working Americans... white Americans" that she got blasted for and rightfully so. It was a stupid comment And Bill Clinton was the one blowing the dog whistle in that campaign most of the time anyway.
  20. Saw most of it on a treadmill at the gym with captions rather than sound. I do have to say though, it read great. American triumphalism generally has a better ring than "we're doomed".
  21. Happy birthday.
  22. Neither of them are particularly strong candidates.
  23. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 23, 2012 -> 02:17 PM) They won't. They don't report like that anywhere else. It isn't going to happen on their political pages. I'm not doubting you're correct there. I'm just saying, if they were actually going to do that, I wouldn't care so much about whether or not the paper endorsed someone.
  24. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 23, 2012 -> 11:19 AM) Paul isn't running as a 3rd party. He's had the chance before and never done it. There is no reason for him to do so now. He actually has done it before. In 1988.
  25. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 23, 2012 -> 02:00 PM) With out the editorial and opinion pages, there is literally no reason for me to pick up a newspaper. I can get that news literally yesterday. If there isn't something in there to set it apart from the internet, it is a waste of trees. Editorial and opinion pages are where that happens. I feel like the editorial page is where a newspaper fulfills its good citizen role by trying to elicit a response and some thinking about the issues that matter in their reading audience. In this day and age I can get the facts anywhere. It is hard to find the facts plus what those facts mean to the local audience. At the very least it is a challenge to think, even if you don't agree. I see the candidate endorsements as an extension of good editorial work. If they are actually going to do what they say they are going to do, it would be some of the best political reporting anyone would have access to - frankly. I'd take that over an endorsement any day of the week.
