QUOTE (Texsox @ Jul 6, 2009 -> 04:57 AM) I know it is a circular thing, but Manny is much better known, and that gets viewers. He is a loud, outgoing personality. If your paycheck depended on viewers, who would you put on Sportscenter? When Carlos Quentin is a first-ballot hall of famer with a questionable work ethic, sloppy clothes and silly hair, ESPN will watch him under their microscope.

yep.

QUOTE (Texsox @ Jul 4, 2009 -> 01:33 PM) Well they have been saying it is between a man and a woman for over 200 years. Doesn't make it right, though. There was also a time when interracial marriages were not recognized.

Also, Hop Haus on Erie and Franklin. In the old Leona's spot. Great burgers made out of ostrich, venison, lamb with beer pairings. Was there a couple of years ago when I was home for Christmas.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jun 26, 2009 -> 08:40 AM) Indeed it is. I first went there as an intern in the graphics department at Neoglyphics in '98. We'd do lunch there frequently. But like most dot-coms, all good things came to an end. I think the last time I went to Pontiac was 2003.

I haven't lived in Chicago going on 5 years, although I do make it back to visit for Christmas and sometimes for a Sox homestand. My favorite places I used to visit all the time, unsure of which are still around. Breakfast: The Bongo Room, Honore/Milwaukee. Yes, this is the High Fidelity corner and my favorite brunch spot in town. Clarke's, Lincoln/Halsted or Clark/Belmont. Open around the clock, good diner food—particularly pancakes. Ann Sather, Belmont west of Clark (iirc). Also another outpost in Andersonville. Chicago institution, famous for their Cinnamon rolls. Lunch: Manny's Deli. Best Jewish deli in town. Star of Siam, State/Illinois. Food on par with Thai Star a few blocks away but a better venue. Mr. Beef, Erie/Orleans. Divey place full of celebrity heads on the walls. Jay Leno's favorite place for Beef. If you've got kids, Ed Debevic's on Wells/Ontario or Portillo's is a good bet. Dinner: Pizzeria Uno or Due, Ohio/Wabash. Same menu, ingredients, ownership—go where there's the shortest wait unless you're a purist and want to see the birthplace of the Chicago pizza. In which case, wait for Uno. Kamehachi on Schiller/Wells. Stellar sushi, always a good bet. Pontiac Cafe on Damen/Milwaukee. Piece on North/Milwaukee. Good pizza and brews. Duke of Perth, Clark north of Diversey. Fish and chips, great English/Scottish beer selection and Scotch list the best in the city. Wednesday and Friday nights are all you can eat fish and chips, or at least used to be. Adobo Grill, Honore/Milwaukee. Very tasty upscale Mexican food and unbeatable Tequila list. Late night: Rainbo Room, Damen south of Division (iirc). Divey with High Life bottles and full of hipster girls. Yes, I think this is a selling point. Delilah's, Lincoln near Diversey (iirc). Dive often with good live music. Wieners Circle, Clark/Wrightwood. I used to live a couple of blocks from this place, and now that the original Gold Coast Dogs is gone, this is the pre-emptive Chicago 'Dog. It's been featured on Insomniac a couple of times. Not for the faint of heart. Zaiqa, Orleans/Chestnut. Pakistani cafeteria, best value in town. The cabbie hangout on the north side. This is an...adventure.

An update. I'm the first runner up, which means that my work will be featured in the first print run of 500. I'm ineligible for the cut in line pass or $200 prize, but there may be other opportunities forthcoming with the Kogi people. You can pick one up wherever the trucks are, or at kogibbq.com. Release date still TBD.
-
I'm shocked that Podsednik has been producing like he has. I would agree with an All-Star nod for him.
-
I talked to a rep from Kogi tonight. I am the runner-up. I was the staff favorite, which means my shirts are printed regardless, but not eligible for the two Benjamins and cut-in-line pass. However, there is promise of more paying work opportunities and other perks. Translation: my work is not a voting issue, they want to print it no matter what the public says. Hey, I'll take it. They will be sold online at kogibbq.com. I had a few Korean tacos when I lived near the Wiltern. Exotic, submissive, not bad.
-
Remember ? If so, here we go again—the ultra-hip LA based Korean taco truck outfit, Kogi, is having a t-shirt contest. I've received confirmation that my artwork has made the finals: Polls will open any day now. Grand prize is two bills and a cut in line pass good for a month and 500 t-shirts printed. Runner up gets shirts printed and love. (If you're a local, join me some night.) Will you stuff the ballot box for me?

QUOTE (The Critic @ May 24, 2009 -> 08:52 PM) Here's how this happened: I was a kid in the 70's. The Hawks were NEVER on TV other than road games, the Red Wings were always on the Saturday afternoon Game Of The Week, I liked the team and the uniform, and there ya go. The Hawks/Wings thing didn't seem as retarded as it is now, and maybe that's because the Hawks were "only" a decade removed from their last Cup, not the 40+ years they are now. So maybe the Hawk fans back then weren't as jealous of Detroit's success as they are now. I was a kid in the 80s and 90s and lived through that era of the tyranny of Dollar Bill. I remember buying a Roenick jersey and three months later after months of lying to the fans, the Blackhawks dealt his rights to Phoenix. I'll agree, I didn't hate them back then—St. Louis and Minnesota were bigger division rivals. And nowadays I don't really care much about either of those teams. And for a long time the Blackhawks weren't even worth paying attention to. Why be a fan if the prices go up for a progressively worse product? Neither the Blues nor the North Stars and now, the Wild are an Original Six rivalry. In the meantime, nothing to show for the Blackhawks. Roenick, Chelios, Belfour, and the supporting cast of standouts like Murphy, Nicholls, Ruuttu, Smith, Suter, and the rest withered away or left with hard feelings—and nothing to show for it. The past fifteen years, the octopi, Hockeytown, and half a dozen Stanley Cup rings and the last stop before the Hall of Fame for what seemed like all the luminary players of my coming of age are salt in the wounds. The jersey still hangs in my closet. Today it was on my back. I want Detroit to go down.

QUOTE (The Critic @ May 24, 2009 -> 07:20 PM) It's true, I do love the Red Wings. However, they are my second NHL love, and my first love (the Hawks) are making me crazy right now. Considering this is the Bears/Packers, Yankees/Red Sox of the NHL—does not compute. The classic aesthetic of their crest and uniforms are the only things I don't loathe and despise about the Red Wings. And even then, I can still hardly bear to look at them.

QUOTE (kapkomet @ May 24, 2009 -> 06:52 PM) I have not seen the entire series like I did the Vancouver one - but I will say this - the Hawks are pretty undisciplined. I don't even necessarily mean that from a penalty standpoint, although that certainly factors into it. The Blackhawks are way too loosey goosey, especially in transition and the neutral zone. That is where Detroit has lived for the last 15 years... they eat up everyone in the neutral zone which allows them to control the play on both ends of the ice - honestly, I don't understand why more teams don't get this. They are disciplined and stay within their game. The Hawks haven't learned that yet. Skill and flashy stick handling are good, but not being disciplined will kill you in this game... and that is what we are witnessing in this series. They'll get there, I think, but it might be a good couple of years. I agree that they'll get there, but it's frustrating to see them not play as well as they are capable of. I thought '92 was going to be the first of many Stanley Cup runs for the Blackhawks, but now we've got ownership and management that gives a s***—unlike then. I want to see them play like they are capable, and apply what they've learned next season and postseason. Let's figure out who is in the crease and I think the rest will take care of itself.
-
I wanted to see a competitive series and by that I mean I didn't expect the Hawks to beat Detroit 4 games out of 7. But the Hawks seemed to have taken everything they learned in the first three games and threw it out the window today. They're young and making stupid mistakes. Versteeg with two consecutive penalties? Come on. Detroit is too smart to play those games. They've built a very good franchise in the past 15 years but it doesn't mean I hate them any less. In game 3, Kronwall had a legal hit on Havlat and I don't think it warranted a major or a game misconduct—I would have been happier if the referees would call it both ways for the duration. Yes, the Hawks have been getting outplayed, but the referees are making no bones about tipping it in Detroit's favor with the exception of Kronwall's hit. How many tripping and hooking calls have they let Detroit get away with, and then they come down on Eager? GMAFB. By that measure, they should have broken Holmstrom's legs by second intermission.

Somehow, I think this is the levee breaking. DeJesus, and a base hit right after.

Podsednik in right. Fatty is keeping us in this game single-handedly.

Old Comiskey New Comiskey Wrigley Field Miller Park Jacobs Field Fenway Park Royals Stadium McAfee Coliseum Dodger Stadium Angel Stadium AT&T Park This Summer, Busch Stadium and maybe a trip down to see Petco in San Diego. I'd also like to see the Sox series at Safeco, we'll see. McAfee is a dump and is as charming as a parking garage, but has the best beer selection of anywhere major league park I've been. Miller Park is probably the best value, best food and High Life on tap. I'm all about the Champagne of Beers. As far as favorite parks go I've got to go with AT&T for new parks and Fenway for the old parks.

I say the same thing about Packer fans. But how much else is there to live for in Wisconsin?

QUOTE (Princess Dye @ Feb 28, 2009 -> 10:05 AM) This one Cardinals fan told me St Louis has bigger sports fans than Chicago b/c the Ozzie Smith restaurant thrives whereas Jordan's restaurant comparatively didnt last long. Ha. Supply & demand much? Supply and demand is absolutely correct. St. Louis has a great fan base but this is just retarded. River North is a huge tourist area full of gimmicky theme restaurants that were a lot cheaper for a family to eat at after a day at the Museum Campus and Niketown. If you wanted to eat a steakhouse, there were plenty of better steakhouses in that area that weren't sports bar/celebrity theme park inbreds. Be all that as it may, MJs enjoyed a good long run and had lines around the block for years. This kind of thing happens all the time in the restaurant business: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Jordan's_Restaurant. Feuding ownership, differing opinions on direction, all choreographed with Jordan's unceremonious departure from the Bulls. Chicago teams have a way of chasing their star athletes out of town. Bobby Hull. Jeremy Roenick. Chris Chelios. Michael Jordan. Carlton Fisk. Feel free to put Frank Thomas in that group if you wish. As for Market, I'd expect it to be a pricey gastropub type of place—the Market district is where many of the best, most cutting edge restaurants in one of the top 3 restaurant towns on the Continent have been opening for the past decade or so.

In the 1998 Winter games, Canadian snowboarder Ross Rebagliati had a medal temporarily revoked after testing positive for marijuana. It was eventually returned. The reasoning? Marijuana is legal in many of the countries represented in the Olympics and is not what could be considered a performance-enhancing drug, whether or not it was ingested as second-hand smoke as Rebagliati claimed. Pot's legal in California, if you have the right documentation. Most drugs subject to federal bans are such because they were rooted in racial and/or social prejudices and as such are basically Bills of Attainder and therefore unconstitutional. But that's a whole other topic. -
Question for the old farts with good memories on this board
Drew replied to santo=dorf's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (santo=dorf @ Dec 6, 2008 -> 02:16 PM) Yeah, eastbay screwed up mine 5 years ago with some red lettering instead of the blue one like they showed in the picture. The whole 1983/1985 jerseys are so screwy. So apparently in 1983 they had names on the unis, but not the 1985 ones? MLB is advertising replicas of the 1983 White Sox unis from last year (they're on clearance B1G1, $134 for Dye, Thome, Swisher and Jenks) but they put the MLB tag on the back and did not include a tag. '85 had names, that's why it's screwy. One of the reasons why I remember this is because my childhood friend who was a Cub fan liked the fact that the White Sox' jerseys had names and the Cubs' didn't. The mid-70s red jerseys didn't have names, IIRC from the photos I've seen from this era. The collared white and navy unis had names as well. The pullover striped jerseys of the early-mid 80s had names. The late 80s/early 90s lowercase 'e' Sox jerseys didn't have names on either home or road until the last couple of seasons they were worn. In 1990 they had names on both home and road. The silver and black jerseys, starting at the unveiling late in the 1990 season and through at least the first full season they were worn, did not have names on the home pinstripes. -
Question for the old farts with good memories on this board
Drew replied to santo=dorf's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (santo=dorf @ Dec 6, 2008 -> 11:59 AM) Granted, I wasn't alive when the White Sox were wearing these, but based on the photos I've seen in this era, this lettering/numbering looks most authentic to me. Not only does the M&N jersey shown on their site. not have lettering, the numbering isn't right—the authentic numbering had much thinner strokes and serifs. The lettering and numbering proportions used on these jerseys you can see back through the 50s and the Go-Go Sox unis. I don't understand how a company who has built their reputation on being authentic down to the last stitch would have such discrepancies in what they're showing. Either they're misrepesenting what they're selling or someone isn't doing their homework.
