  1. It's the name of the river. There is an African country by the same name. The racial slur is spelled differently, though I'd imagine its origins come from there. There's a huge difference. It's pronounced like Nigeria minus the-ia.
  2. Now that they extended Abreu, they don't have a spot for him. Eloy is going to be the DH eventually. I think Vaughn is going to be a .300+/25/100+ type guy with an OBP approaching .400 and 40+ doubles. I don't want to trade him either, but re-signing Abreu kinda, um, makes it hard to find a spot for him
  3. One might be available, but the record for releasing a safe vaccine is 4 years. I think anything short of three years is wildly optimistic, even with the entire world working on it. They're going to run into issues, that's for sure. I highly doubt that they'll somehow get a safe vaccine by the end of 2021. If they do, it's more dumb luck than anything else. With a vaccine that is basically going to be required by law, you better be damn sure it's safe before releasing it to the public.
  4. ^^^^^^ Some people think one is being a Negative Nancy when you say that Covid isn't going away. I hate to burst your bubble, but that's reality. Anyone who thinks that Covid is going to magically disappear by March 2021 is living in a world with unicorns farting rainbows. I've maintained this position all along, that the following are true: 1. Covid isn't going away until there's a vaccine 2. A safe vaccine isn't going to be around until the 2nd half of 2023 at the earliest. Prepare yourselves, folks. This is life until there is a vaccine. There are also no guarantees that a safe vaccine will exist that quickly either. The 2020s could be known as the "covid decade" because it might take that long before we get a vaccine. I also shudder to think what would happen if a vaccine isn't found. We have far worse problems in the world than whether or not sports come back. Any society that values personal freedoms is in for a round of deep shit over the next 3-5 years at least.
  5. I hope you're right....but once Madrigal, Robert and Kopech come up, I think anyone else (including Vaughn) could be traded for MLB help.
  6. Don't get attached to any of these pitchers. I want the Sox to keep Crochet should he prove he can start in the minors, but I do realize that he's more likely to be traded to help the MLB team than to ever pitch in Chicago.
  7. In normal circumstances, yes but an ongoing pandemic changes things. Based on how things are going right now who knows when it will be safe for fans again.
  8. I'm nowhere near that confident but imo the owners are going to ask for financial concessions from the players to play in 2021. That probably puts next year in jeopardy as well.
  9. Would the players agree to it is the question.
  10. With this and the NFL news today, Idk how team sports are possible. I think it's a matter of time before the NBA/NHL players balk and those seasons are cancelled as well.
  11. He has the ability to be really good....I thought he turned the corner in 2018. He was good last year until he went to that bandbox in Cincinnati.
  12. There's a question about whether or not that was actually agreed upon. There's a rumor that Manfred misrepresented that tidbit to the owners.
  13. Well actually not next year, whenever they play baseball again. Can they survive 3 seasons away? That's what we have to ask ourselves.
  14. Trevor Bauer is awesome and I want him in a Sox uni whenever baseball is to be played again. I'm not expecting baseball until 2023 at this point. 2020-2022 are fucked.
  15. In sports related covid news.......
  16. No it won't. The owners and players aren't even in the same galaxy cluster. There's virtually zero chance of baseball in 2022 and that sucks.
  17. Don't get attached to any of these pitchers, as they all could be traded for pieces to help the MLB team sometime in the next few years.
  18. Nah, that's the owners saying what they want the fans to believe. Why would they tell the truth?
  19. That opinion requires belief that the owners are telling the truth about their finances.....I happen to believe that they're full of shit. If they want to have anything less than prorated salary which in and of itself is fair, they better be willing to open their books. Prove it.
  20. I wouldn't say I have a dislike for business owners....I don't blame them for it. I have a skeptical view of business in general because at least in this country, it doesn't have a conscience and I think it's borderline immoral without one. Teams paying their minor leaguers and vendors during this time is an example of proper behavior. The fact that some only did it through May isn't. I'd call out the players if I thought they were being unreasonable. If a new CBA had just been signed and we were 8 years away from a labor negotiation, then I might feel a bit differently. I'm very pro-union in general but I'm not afraid to call one out if I think they're being ridiculous, because that happens too. The owners have essentially not budged on dollars the entire time. There's no reason for the players to negotiate against themselves.
  21. If they won't operate without guaranteed profits, where's the risk? Oh yeah there is none. The players have more to lose by playing than the owners do.
  22. Both sides have dug in their heels and have pointed the finger at the other. It's a huge game of chicken. The bottom line is the group of people with with the most money should shoulder the burden. Either the owners should shoulder the burden for the next two seasons or open up the CBA now. The owners combined have 100x more money than the players do. We need to stop with this notion that businesses need to be guaranteed a profit annually in order to continue to operate.
  23. WTF is with the owners???? They're sending the same proposal over and over again in disguise. They're not engaging in good faith negotiations. They have to give a little. I think the players will give a bit if they actually negotiate.
