  1. Actually I'm against signing Free Agents to big deals in almost all cases except for the special ones like Harper/Machado or using past cases that I would have been ok with at the time, Manny Ramirez and A-Rod. The huge thing with those guys is that they are in their mid-20s and you don't get the decline years, and if you have to give them a few extra years at the end, you can make them like 12-15MM years, and balance it out by front loading it. For me, value shopping in FA only, 4 year or less contracts, build from within as best as you can. If the "window" is short, so be it. Better to have that flexibility than to have a bunch of money tied up in aging former stars, and be rebuilding anyway. See Detroit for a contrast. Big FA contracts almost always end up badly.
  2. They should have rebuilt in 2009 or post 2010. If I was Jerry Reinsdorf, I would have kicked KW upstairs at that point and given Hahn the keys. KW/Ozzie deserved to be fired post 2009. They still had some players with value, and they would have had a head start on it. Who knows, they could have had Sale /Q WITH a decent offense around them. But whatever, what has happened has happened, this decade was completely lost and they had a decent 23 year run. They got unlucky with 85-89 win teams, and they got unlucky with 90 win teams too. I'd suggest everyone take a look at the research I did in this thread: http://www.soxtalk.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=100839
  3. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Nov 26, 2017 -> 11:38 PM) Wait, you are saying Brady and Manning neither had great receivers to throw to? Manning did, Brady didn't and Favre didn't either. The point is, you don't know how good a receiver who has a HOF QB throwing to them REALLY is until they no longer have said QB to throw them the ball. Only then do you know if they are really that good and talented. Larry Fitzgerald was one of them, he continued to produce even when he didn't have Kurt Warner throwing the football to him. None of the players that have gone through the Patriots have really done anything anywhere else, other than Randy Moss who was there at the end of his career. You don't know how good Gronkowski really is because Brady is throwing him the ball. Gronk is the only guy that you can really say that may be supremely talented that Brady has as a receiver.
  4. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Nov 26, 2017 -> 10:40 PM) http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap300000044...ad-first-starts Looks like quite a few star QBs failed to demonstrate ”greatness” from the start... And Manning had Marshall Faulk & Marvin Harrison, while Mitch has Tarik Cohen & Dontrelle Inman. Don't give me the "he has nobody to throw to" excuse. While they were both all-time greats, Favre and Brady NEVER had anyone to throw to. NOBODY they had as recievers did ANYTHING outside of Green Bay and New England respectively, save for the 2 seasons that Brady had Randy Moss. Hell, Brady won 2 SBs with Troy Brown, Jabar Gaffney, and Deion Branch as his top 3 receivers. Had zero TEs at that point. Those guys were probably equal in talent to Wright/Inman. Antonio Freeman, Greg Jennings and Donald Driver never did anything when away from Favre/Rodgers either. The QB makes the receiver, not the other way around. I wonder how many 1,000 yd seasons Larry Fitzgerald had without Kurt Warner and Carson Palmer? A: 2 in 6 seasons.
  5. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Nov 26, 2017 -> 09:12 PM) Troy Aikman and Peyton Manning beg to differ Peyton Manning went 21-37 with 302 yds 1 TD and 3 INT in his first start. He had a 42 yd pass. Did he make mistakes? Sure. But he moved the ball, made plays, etc. Aikman I'll give you.
  6. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Nov 26, 2017 -> 08:45 PM) Dude, you wrote him off after his first game, no lie. You talked about drafting another quarterback and said Trubisky doesn’t have “it”, so spare me your “nobody’s writing off Trubisky” crap. The last 2 weeks made me change my mind a bit. I was more hopeful after the GB/DET games, but this one made it come crashing down. Do I think he's going to be really good? No. Could I be wrong? Yes. The definition of "The jury is still out" It doesn't change the fact that the great ones make things happen the moment they take the field. Do they make rookie mistakes as rookies? Of course, but there is more good than bad. Not so for Trubisky. Go watch Wentz's first 3 starts and then go watch Trubisky's first 3. Night and day. I wish I could go back and watch the first 3 starts of QBs who were really solid for a long time. I'd bet you'd find things in common.
  7. QUOTE (soxfan49 @ Nov 26, 2017 -> 07:34 PM) And I’m sure you saw those last year in Jared Goff, right? Go away Goff is having a good season, but so did many other QBs. Let's see if he can sustain it first.
  8. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 26, 2017 -> 07:06 PM) If you are a team that thinks you are close to competitive right now and next year, and you miss out on or can't afford Stanton, what are your other options like right now? JD Martinez is looking for huge money, Lorenzo Cain is a strong player, Jay Bruce is probably comparable but is a lot older, and then as outfielders the next guys who played full seasons are Carlos Gonzalez and Melky Cabrera. If your team thinks you're competitive right now and you mis out on Stanton and Martinez, you don't have a lot of options. I'd take a shot on CarGo before giving up assets for Avi. and Melky's 2017 is about what you can expect from Avi if he doesn't go back to sucking. There really isn't that much of an incentive to trade for Avi. If I were an opposing GM, looking at corner OF in the market I'd take Melky/CarGo over Avi, I just don't believe in him going forward. The .392 BABIP is insane and a regression probably brings him back to below replacement level. Really, I don't think anyone is interested in him except if they can get him for basically free. It only takes one sucker though, and Kudos to Hahn if he finds that guy. I think the Sox start the season with both Abreu and Avi on the roster, because I don't think anyone would give anything of value for a DH and a regressed Avi. Think about what the Sox got for Melky, because that is the return I'd expect if they move Avi, and both Avi/Abreu are worth more to the Sox than they are to anyone else. .285/.324/.746 17 HR 85 RBI 99 OPS+ 98 wRC+ -Melky Cabrera in 2017. This is about the best case scenario I can envision for Avi in 2018. Think about if you'd trade anything of value for that production with only 2 seasons of team control.
  9. Nobody's writing off Trubisky already, but what I've seen doesn't look promising. The guy has a bunch of the traits of Cutler on the field. He's a) inaccurate b) has sloppy mechanics/footwork c) supposedly has a rocket arm and played college ball at a non football school in a power 5 conference. Trubisky has to really prove otherwise in order to make me believe in him as a starter in the NFL. I will continue to say it, but you know who the guys who are going to be the great ones are from the moment they take the field. They throw receivers open, make the offensive line look better than it is and make big plays at crunch time. Do they still make mistakes early? Yeah. But the traits are there. I don't see those traits in Trubisky. 2018 is huge for Trubisky and Pace. If Trubisky continues to be below average to bad, Pace is gone. Pace also needs to get new pro scouts because his FA signings suck.
  10. I'd hope you read the bit by Longenhagen on the guys that were set free by the Braves. If the Sox don't get any, it is no biggie IMO. https://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/the-braves-...-and-its-harsh/
  11. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 22, 2017 -> 04:49 PM) I keep seeing the beat guys say if Fox is fired and Fangio isn't named the head coach, he will not be with the Bears next year. For all you posters who know more about football than I do, if they do get a new DC it really has to be a 3-4 guy doesn't it? Wouldn't going back to a 4-3 screw them up for at least a season or 2? I would think there is no way they are going back to a 4-3 until Pace is fired, whenever that may be. Floyd/Goldman/Hicks/Trevathan are pretty much 3-4 guys so you don't want your best players on defense to be in a scheme where they are being utilized improperly.
  12. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Nov 21, 2017 -> 09:02 PM) He has an MCL and PCL strain, iirc Urlachers was torn. Everything I have heard today has been positive about this, he obviously isn’t playing again this season but at no point did anyone who discussed this on the score nor did John Fox express any worry that this is a career altering injury Oh he didn't tear it? I thought he did. My bad then. My response was based on that thought. They said he's still having surgery. I think this depends on the extent of the damage to the PCL. If there is minimal damage there, and most of the damage is MCL, then he's ok. If the PCL is severely damaged, he's not. Obviously we won't know until after he has the surgery. http://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/2150632...ries-for-season
  13. Reports are Floyd has a PCL/MCL. i.e. the same injury that cut Urlacher's career short. There is no good surgery for PCL. See Shawne Merriman for a younger guy who was out of the league in 2 seasons after tearing his PCL. This is worse news than an ACL. ACLs can be repaired properly, PCLs can't. That is now a 7th and a 9th overall pick in consecutive seasons that has had a career destroying injury. This is going to be pretty hard for Pace to overcome, because ultimately nobody cares whether your 1st rounder got injured and that is why they busted. They just care about results.
  14. Bears can't catch a break with injuries. all of their 1st rounders from 2013-2016 have now had significant injuries that impact their ability to perform to that level. Long, Fuller, White, and now Floyd have all had at least one season ending injury in their short careers. It is really hard to rebuild a team with that crap luck.
  15. Bears have their best offensive 1st half of the season, and they're still trailing. They can't get the whole team to play well simultaneously.
  16. Now all of the sudden the defense looks like crap. Who got injured other than Trevathan? Does he really matter that much? I mean, Stafford just shredded them on that drive. Maybe the fact the secondary looked good for a while had more to do with the skill position players they were playing against more than anything they were doing well.
  17. Don't forget, there are also AAA and AA rounds of the rule V as well. If Adolfo isnt added to the 40 man, I think he's a goner.
  18. People, it wouldn't surprise me in the least if allegations of this kind of behavior come out against the majority of male members of Congress. This type of behavior was all too common and somewhat socially acceptable among males for way too long. Given the age of most people in office, I predict a new member of Congress gets accused weekly, if not daily.
  19. I think all of this talk about Jim Harbaugh coming here is nuts. He'd have to be high as a kite to leave Michigan to come back to the NFL, especially with the knowledge that if he leaves, he's not getting that job again.
  20. Why are we even talking about this? This should be in the Diamond Club IMO. Sox blew their Int'l wad on Robert; can't sign anyone on the Int'l market for more than $300k until 2019 so I don't think they have a snowball's chance in hell to get Ohtani. It is understandable that they blew their wad on Robert, as a bird in hand is worth two in the bush.
  21. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 2, 2017 -> 12:15 PM) I was under the impression that was included in the timeline, not excluded. I was under the impression that the timeline was for him to start baseball activities again, which is why I said August in the first place.
  22. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 2, 2017 -> 10:52 AM) The most conservative outlook was the beginning of June. Not sure where August is coming from. I'm assuming that he'll have a 3 week rehab stint in the minors, which would put him back right after the all-star break. Which is July, but a week or two from August anyway. Semantics.
  23. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Nov 1, 2017 -> 08:01 PM) Lol Rodon will not be a LOOGY You just don't know until he pitches next August. We have no idea what kind of stuff he'll have.
