  1. New owner Bill Vecck brought in Paul Richards for a second tour as manager, ripped out the artificial turf (Installed in 1968) in the infield and replaced it with grass then tore down the fence in centerfield, increasing the home run distance from 415 feet to 440. Amid all these changes the White Sox had a terrible season on the field, posting the worst record both home and away in the league, finishing sixth, 64-97 25.5 games out . On may 9th, Wilbur Wood, who had a 4-3 record, was hit by a line drive and suffered a fractured kneecap. He was lost for the season and things went down hill rapidly from there. Ken Brett (10-12) was the top winner among the remaining pitchers as Bart Johnson finished 9-16 and Rich Gossage 9-17, Ralph Garr topped the hitters, batting .300 in 136 games; Jim Spencer (.253) and Jorge Orta (.274) hit 14 home runs each and Orta had 72 RBI's

  5. In perhaps the worst season of Chuck Tanner's five years as manager, the team staggered most of the year and finally finished 75-86, fifth in the west, 22.5 games behind. Jorge Orta was the most consistent performer, batting .304 with 11 homers and 83 RBI's. Deron Johnson, released by Boston, was signed in spring training and provided some power with 19 homers and 75 RBI's despite a .239 average as Bill Melton slumped to .240 with only 15 homers and 70 RBI's. Johnson was sold back to Boston in September. Stan Bahnsen left even sooner, being traded to Oakland after a 4-6 start. Jim Kaat was 20-14 in 41 starts and Wilbur Wood 16-20 in 43. Rich Gossage(9-8) had a 1.84 ERA and 26 Saves in 62 games. On Dec. 16 John Allyn, who lost some 2.5 million in 1975, sold 80 percent of the team to former owner Bill Veeck, who fired tanner the next day and made six trades in 2 days after the sale.
  6. Not easy to hit a guy who looks like a Gorilla on the Mound and is throwing 100 mph
  7. 5 k's in 2 innings. Nice points in the fantasy league for me
  8. Dick Allen once again made the WhiteSox a factor in the West race, hitting .301 with 32 homers and 88 RBI's in 128 games, but then on sept 13, when it seemed the team was out of the race, he announced he was "retiring from baseball". Althrough Allen eventually wound up playing for the phillies the following season, his departure helped slide home 80 - 80 in fourth place, nine games out of first. Jorge Orta played a complete season, hitting .316 (second best in the league) and Ken Henderson (.292) hit 20 homers with 95 RBI's. Bill Melton struggled much of the year but finished at .240 with 21 homers and 63 RBI's. Veteran Lefty Jim Kaat, Obtained from Minnesota, led pitchers with a 21-13 record and a 2.92 ERA: Wilbur Wood was 20-19 with a 3.60 ERA in 42 starts and Young Bart Johnson, who also quit at the start of the season returned to compile a 10-4 record and 2.73 ERA in the second half.

  10. A year of Turmoil and disappontment for the White Sox came as the team was in first place regularly up to June 29 (58 Days all told) but collapsed badly in the wake of an injury to Dick Allen and shallow starting pitching. Allen, the league's Most Valuble Player in 1972, hurt his ankle on June 28 and virtually disappeared thereafter, batting only five more times. Allen hit .316 in his 250 at bats with 16 homers and 41 RBI's Carlos May (.268) had 20 homers and a club high 86 RBI's while Bill Melton (.277) also had 20 homers and 87 RBI's. Two Players (Rick Reichardt and Mike Andrews ) were unable to agree on contracts and were released during the season. Wilbur Wood (24-20) and Stan Bahnsen (18-21) combined for a staggering 90 starts, 48 for Wood, but the next best pitcher was part time starter Terry Forster (6-11) who led the club with a 3.23 ERA. General Manager Stu Holcomb resigned on July 27, leaving Roland Hemond in charge
