Vazquez (0-1) vs. Blackburn (0-1): HOME OPENER!

QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Apr 7, 2008 -> 03:06 PM) Vazquez really turned to corner in this game. Nice start Javy. I've been (gasp!) working for the past few innings. Nice to see that Javy found his groove and gave us a chance to win. C'mon JD! -
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Apr 5, 2008 -> 11:22 AM) Xtra innings typically has every game with the exception to games you would be blacked out to (ie teams in your region and than any Fox National Games). There are ocassional exceptions but I'd say you get 90% or so of the Sox games. WCIU games are not carried (so you have to hope the road teams feed gets carried). Sox games on WGN are also not available (unless they carry the road feed), which is interesting because Comcast doesn't even offer WGN in my area. That said, Extra Innings is well worth the money. I typically get about 20-23 Sox games per month.

QUOTE(G&T @ Apr 7, 2008 -> 12:09 PM) Does any team have the defensive arms the Sox have with Quentin and Uribe playing? No noodle arms out there. I really like Uribe at 2nd. Despite his bat, I'd be fine with him staying there and bringing Richar along slowly.

Would today be a good day to start Brian Anderson?

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Apr 6, 2008 -> 03:21 PM) If you want to rest a starter, don't do it against the big dogs in the division, where a win is considered more important (because you add a win to your count and give a big AL contender a loss). If there is ever a time to go for the sweep, tonight would be that night. Plus you are going up against the teams ace and have your very own ace on the mound so why not try to make a statement that last season is gone and this season is here. I'm all for winning as much as possible within the division, but we're going to be at less-than-full strength anyway with Jenks, Linebrink, and Logan most likely unavailable. Plus, I'm not sure that the 0-5 Tigers qualify as a "big dog" right now. -

QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Apr 6, 2008 -> 02:33 PM) I disagree with this line of thinking. Just cause we've won the series doesn't make todays game any less important than tomorrows. That may be true, but it's better to focus on winning a series than trying to win every single game. And while you don't want to "concede" a game, you can't throw your starters out there every single time and let your backups rot on the bench. IMO, the best time to get the utility players at-bats is after a series has already been won. -

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Apr 6, 2008 -> 02:03 PM) Today's national TV and tomorrow's the home opener. I hope we can get an Anderson sighting on Tuesday and Wednesday in order to give Thome and Dye and maybe PK some extra time at DH or so on those days. We're going for a sweep of the Tigers on national TV tonight. We had a lineup that worked the last couple days. Play it again, Ozzie. And this is from an Anderson fan. Pencil him in on Tuesday and Wednesday. I have to disagree with this. We've already won the series, so if Ozzie wants to rest a starter or two, tonight is the night to do it. The fact that it's on national TV shouldn't matter. I wouldn't have a problem with Ozzie playing our usual lineup, but I definitely don't want to see Bobby or Linebrink out there tonight. Those guys need a day off. -

QUOTE(lostfan @ Apr 6, 2008 -> 12:14 PM) I agree that Dye and Thome could use some time off now and then to stay fresh since we appear to have the depth. I just thought it was kinda ridiculous to put catching and RF on the same level is all. Of course they're not. Then again, it's relatively easy for a 34-year-old outfielder to pull a calf or hamstring in cool weather. -

QUOTE(lostfan @ Apr 6, 2008 -> 12:05 PM) Come on now. Catching is by far the most physically demanding position on the field and there is no close second. This is common knowledge. I never said it wasn't. But do you really want to run an aging JD out there 155 times this season? I don't. -

QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Apr 6, 2008 -> 12:02 PM) Catching is a lot different than rf. Yeah, AJ and Toby Hall aren't diving after line drives. -

QUOTE(BearSox @ Apr 6, 2008 -> 11:54 AM) Jesus Christ, it's 5 going on 6 games into the season. By the way you are talking, you'd think they haven't had a day off in 20 days. So explain why Toby "I Can't Hit for Crap" Hall was in the lineup against a division rival yesterday. It's a long season and you want to give your players (especially aging, injury-prone veterans) a day off on occasion. Does JD need a day off? No. But it'd be nice to give him a break (but still allow him to DH, as he's hitting well now), since we've already won the series. It'd also be nice to work some of our over-crowded outfield into the lineup. -

QUOTE(Felix @ Apr 6, 2008 -> 11:34 AM) Why DH JD? Thome has a hell of a history against Verlander, there's no reason he should be left out of the order. Because it'd be nice to give an aging player who was banged up for much of last year a rest. But I didn't consider Thome's history against Verlander, so perhaps you have a point. Benching JD would be a bad idea now with the way that he's been hitting. -
QUOTE(shipps @ Apr 6, 2008 -> 10:08 AM) Oh let me make note of that.........Not good to put head foward when running, because it doesnt slow you down at all to look back. It's better to have a slower approach to the ball than to put one's head down and completely lose track of it.
-
QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Apr 6, 2008 -> 08:11 AM) That's the bottom line for me. Does he make the plays he needs to make? Yes. He made a couple of plays yesterday that were better than an average CF would make. Swisher does a good job as a temporary CF and I would have no problem whatsoever using him there on a limited basis. But I'm hesitant to use him there permanently, especially with BA and JO at our disposal. And with Quentin looking good right now, that muddles the situation even more.

Today would be a good day to DH JD, start Quentin in RF, move Swisher to LF, and give BA the nod in CF. -
Gavin "Pretty Boy" Floyd vs. D-Train, Going for three!

QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Apr 5, 2008 -> 03:31 PM) Hopefully we can get a blowout win tomorrow and give the bullpen a rest, especially Bobby. If a save situation comes up for us, I'm thinking Thornton or Dotel get the ball. Yep. Even if it isn't a blowout, I still want Thornton and Dotel out there. We've already won the series and Bobby, Linebrink, and Logan need a day off. -

Awesome. Gotta love the defense picking Bobby up when he doesn't have his best stuff. That's the hallmark of a winning team. -

QUOTE(Balance @ Apr 5, 2008 -> 03:26 PM) Attaboy, Swish! Nice sliding catch! I don't want him in CF for the long-term, but I really like the way that he's played. He's been tremendous for a non-natural CF. -

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Apr 5, 2008 -> 02:51 PM) Well, I think Floyd should have come back out, but go get em BOOOOOONEY. I can see it either way. You definitely want to play your best players to win the first two of a three-game series, but you also want to give a young pitcher like Floyd a chance to win and develop some confidence. I would've been OK either way. And you're absolutely right about Farmer/Stone. I'll be hitting the mute button on the TV and playing the radio cast over the Web this season. -

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Apr 5, 2008 -> 02:43 PM) I let Gavin go unless someone gets on. He's retired 7 in a row, his pitch count is fine, he has a lead and we are facing the Tigers bullpen. If someone gets on then pull him, otherwise give him the 7th. This is a tough decision. If Bobby and Linebrink were both fresh, I'd definitely pull him now to give him some confidence and a chance to win. But I'm not sure right now. -

Detroit's 'pen is going to suffer this year. At least until Zumaya is back. -
Caught him on BBTN last night. Thought that he was competent and did a good job, but my problem with Singleton has always been that he has no personality. Maybe it'll come out over time as he gets more experience and becomes more comfortable in that role. Anyway, Singleton going to ESPN and Stoney taking his place appears to be a win-win. Chris might be able to fill Harold Reynolds' shoes in time.

QUOTE(sox-r-us @ Apr 4, 2008 -> 01:57 PM) Nowhere has Kenny been quoted as saying he was upset at Tigers getting Renteria....do not assume what the media says is true. They are simply interpreting....and they are wrong >95% of the time That was basically my point. I should've said "supposedly upset" instead. I really don't think that JR (and whoever else on the Board has input on salary) would've allowed $130 million to be spent on Cabrera anyway.
-
I'm not sure why Kenny is upset about losing out on Renteria on the downside of his career and having to eat Dontrelle's salary to get Cabrera (and have to give him $130 million). I would've loved to have Cabrera, but the other two don't exactly invoke a feeling of envy.
