Garfien reports Sox might "revisit" a Thome return
WCSox replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Nov 6, 2009 -> 12:03 PM) If the price is right I'd welcome back Thome to DH as well. I'd sit him against lefties though and give Flowers those at bats, assuming he's here all year. ^^^ -
QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Nov 6, 2009 -> 11:51 AM) Okay, I don't see the range at all. I don't know or care what UZR says, I don't see that with Carlos. Beyond that, half the time he doesn't even know where he's supposed to throw the ball after making a play. DH would be fine, but I think he's okay in LF. I just do not want that guy in RF at all. And I don't know what UZR says about Ichiro, but the Mariners aren't the only team out there with strong defense in RF. One typically wants more range in LF than RF, as more balls are hit there. That's why Quentin's UZR is so much higher in RF (most right fielders are slower than left fielders). I don't understand why somebody who "doesn't know where to throw the ball after making a play" is OK in LF, but a big no-no in RF. If that's your argument, he shouldn't be playing anywhere in the outfield.

QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Nov 6, 2009 -> 11:27 AM) I love CQ but as a defender he would make me vomit as a RF. Comparing Maggs to other RF is a bad argument. Compare Maggs to Nick Markakis then. I want some f***ing D this year. Unless you're the Mariners, you're probably not going to get much defensively out of your starting RF. Plus, you could do a lot worse than Quentin in RF. His arm is mediocre, but still good enough to play the position. He certainly has the range (total UZR of 9.1 in ARI, vs. a total -21.1 UZR in LF). If you're absolutely dead-set against Quentin in RF, moving him to DH might not be a bad option. Especially considering the fact that he's constantly getting injured.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Nov 6, 2009 -> 11:04 AM) I dont know that it is an abberation. His pattern is good year, bad year. He was really good for Milwaukee in 03, sucked hardcore in 04, reborn for the Sox in 05, injured and ineffective in 06, stunk in 07 and 08(but you can combine both of those years, he played a combined 155 games in 07 and 08) and reborn in 09 again. So obviously, the Sox dont want him next year because he will probably drop off again Given his age and long history of injuries, it's very possible that he may never have an above-average season again.

QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Nov 6, 2009 -> 11:12 AM) DeJesus would be a pretty bad fit IMO since he's not really a CF. And for the thousandth time (from me) PLEASE no Quentin in RF. DeJesus is an underrated player and would be a solid LF and leadoff option for us. And, sorry, but Quentin is a legit RF. At the very least, he's a significant upgrade over Dye and I don't see how he'd be any worse than Maggs out there (who also has a very average arm).

Pods is obviously trying to cash in on his comeback season. Nothing wrong with that, but methinks that it's an aberration and I'm glad to hear that he'll be getting that big contract somewhere else.
-
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Nov 6, 2009 -> 10:36 AM) Since PODS is not coming back our outfield has a hole, who will we fill it with? I'd love to say Crawford, but that's probably not the correct answer. If Teahen is playing 3B, that appears to take Figgins out of the running.
-
QUOTE (League @ Nov 6, 2009 -> 10:23 AM) If we can find two guys with decent OBP's to hit 8 & 9, I think putting Beckham in the 1 slot would make for a very good lineup. Given how mediocre the rest of our current lineup is, those guys would hit first and second if they could be had.
-
QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Nov 6, 2009 -> 09:14 AM) Not only would I drive those guys to the airport, I'd build a rocket and launch them at San Diego. I'd be inclined to do it as well, but I'm not so sure about Kenny. He seemed VERY reluctant to include Hudson in any deal last year. It could be pure posturing, but I think there's a chance that he considers Hudson untouchable. Glad to hear that we're getting some cash with Teahen, but I'm not sure what I think of him at 3B.

QUOTE (striker62704 @ Nov 6, 2009 -> 08:48 AM) Interesting points. I'm wondering if we have the talent to land Gonzalez though. Seems like we would be up against LAD and BOS and both of them have deeper farm systems than we do, at least from what I've read. I suspect that Hudson and Flowers would have to be a part of that deal. Because of that, I don't see it happening.

QUOTE (fathom @ Nov 6, 2009 -> 08:57 AM) I was told by a family friend of Dye's this morning that his first choice is to go play for Ron Washington and Texas. What is it with Ron Washington? Milton Bradley supposedly loved playing for him as well.

I still think that there's a chance that JD is brought back at about half the price to DH. If that doesn't happen, thanks for the memories, JD. One of the best FA signings in Sox history.

QUOTE (qwerty @ Nov 6, 2009 -> 04:54 AM) Release jenks? You really think he is potentially worth nothing whatsoever? Unless he does something extremely severe in his personal life, there is zero chance they would release him. There has been speculation in the media that the Sox would be forced to release him due to his arb number (his calf injury and the Sox publicly bashing his workout regimen don't help either). I agree that somebody would probably be willing to deal for him. The Mets paying good money for Putz coming off of an injury-shortened season (to be a setup guy, to boot) is good precedent. I feel less strongly about it, but agree in general.

QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Nov 6, 2009 -> 07:56 AM) 3. Chone Figgins at 4+ years or whatever he's going to get has the potential to be a pretty bad deal. Once his speed declines he's essentially a glorified bench player. Figgins put up a .395 OBP this year (.363 career) and can play a number of positions competently. I agree with your general point of cost-effectiveness, but he'll be far from a bench player when he can't steal 40 bases/season anymore. QUOTE (2nd_city_saint787 @ Nov 6, 2009 -> 08:22 AM) 2. It'd be nice to have 5 stud starters but once you hit the postseason you dont really need 5 so if you can trade floyd or danks to bring in an adrian gonzalez i do it in a heartbeat. Hell Id be fine with seein carlos torres out there every 5th day if it means we got a young lefty bat that can give us 40 homers and 100+ RBI. If the Sox trade a starter, it shouldn't be Floyd or Danks. Those guys are proven major-league talent, they're relatively young, and they have manageable contracts. Hudson is the guy that you dangle. Hell, I'd deal Buehrle before I dealt those two.

QUOTE (beck72 @ Nov 6, 2009 -> 02:31 AM) Teahan isn't the power bat to replace PK. Though he is likely to see an increase in SLG% hitting at the Cell. Even if the sox are on the hook for $3.5 mill for 2010, that seems like a lot for Teahan. Esp. as he doesn't seem above average in any facet of the game. I agree with this. For a team with a couple dubious-to-bad contracts already (Rios, Linebrink), trading a cheap, mediocre (but with upside) player like Getz for a much more expensive mediocre player like Teahen makes little sense to me. The Sox are going to need to cut back at some point. If Teahen isn't dealt as a part of a larger deal, I'm pretty sure that Bobby is dealt/released this winter.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 5, 2009 -> 06:37 PM) It could free up first base for a Dye resigning... I thought that this was a really bad idea at first, but it makes sense the more that I think about it. PK is as good as gone next winter, JD can be re-signed for much cheaper and wants to stay with the Sox, and the organization is in need of salary relief. I have a tough time seeing PK dealt, but two years of JD at $10M total is probably worth more than one year of PK at $10M. That said, I'm not sure that I even want JD at 1B at this point, especially with the back problems that he was supposedly battling through recently. At his age, I'd be more inclined to DH him to protect his health.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 5, 2009 -> 06:36 AM) On the other side of that coin, Danks may never see a worse market for contracts than the one he is looking at right now. That's true. It all depends on how much Danks is willing to gamble with his health.
-
Teahen is a decent player and all, but he's not really a leadoff hitter, which is what we need. Getz may have developed into one. This deal doesn't make much sense to me.
-
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Nov 4, 2009 -> 08:25 PM) Good point, just as risky as it can be for the Sox to sign him to a 5 year guaranteed deal, it can be just as risky for him to go year by year through arbitration. Especially with the plethora of young pitchers that seem to get hurt nowadays, you never know what can happen. If I were Danks, I'd definitely be trying to get a deal done this winter. He's had back-to-back rock-solid seasons and his value is higher now than it's ever been. Plus, as you alluded to, pitchers are so susceptible to arm injuries that holding out until free agency to make that big mega-contract is incredibly risky.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Nov 3, 2009 -> 05:29 PM) If they refused to pitch Lee on 3 days rest, they sure as hell aren't going to pitch him on 2. They had to have considered this scenario at the time they made their decision, and realized if this were to occur, it was a decision they would have to live with. I must've missed Manuel's logic behind this decision, but with the way that Hamels has been pitching this year, not allowing Lee to pitch three times in the WS seems like a bad decision. (Unless he's been having arm issues that I'm not aware of.) I realize that Philly's bullpen is bad and that they want to Lee to go deep into the games that he starts. Still, it would've made more sense to me to limit Lee to 100 pitches in Games 4 and 7, and to use Blanton in long relief.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 4, 2009 -> 09:13 AM) I bet Figgins winds up with the Yankees. I agree, especially with Damon and Matsui coming off the books. Despite his really nice OBP, Jeter probably won't be that great of a leadoff option 2-3 years down the road.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 3, 2009 -> 02:15 PM) You still think of Damon as a leadoff hitter? No kidding. He was great years ago in KC, but he's lost a ton of speed recently. He's also not that much better defensively than Pods. Damon would be a terrible signing for the Sox. He can barely play LF, he's not much of a base-stealing threat anymore, he'll be 36 next year, and he's going to cost WAY too much money.
-
QUOTE (GreatScott82 @ Nov 2, 2009 -> 01:58 PM) Well we do still need a DH.. . .but after the steroid incident i just don't see JR doing such a move. Not to mention that he'd likely have personality clashes with an intense manager like Ozzie. Plus, he'll be 38 in May. You never know when his bat is going to slow down, especially now that he's off the (alleged) juice. Plus, why trade for Manny when you can have Thome (who actually likes playing in Chicago) for a fraction of the cost?
-
QUOTE (JPN366 @ Nov 2, 2009 -> 02:17 PM) I meant that Manny and Ortiz weren't vilified as brutally as A-Rod. That's because a lot of people believe that A-Rod's an image-obsessed, contrived phony. David Ortiz has the type of personality that's almost impossible to dislike, and nobody knows what banned substance he tested positive for. For all we know, he may have just continued to pop greenies or take something sold at GNC. Manny also had a long and very impressive resume of post-season success by the time that he signed with Boston (and continued playing at a high level thereafter). Right or wrong, being a bad-ass in the playoffs can mitigate a number of sins.

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Oct 29, 2009 -> 01:21 PM) i strongly disagree with starting Pedro over Hamels here. I know Hamels has been bad, and Pedro has the pedigree, but Pedro isn't the same Pedro that he was with the Red Sox. There's no reason to pitch him against a lineup with a DH. Pedro has been pretty good in Philly this year. Hamels is obviously the better pitcher and Manuel's definitely playing the hot hand here, but I have a tough time disagreeing with his logic. Hamels has been suffering from a dead (or at least tired) arm all season and it's not going to improve now. Similarly, I expect Girardi to stay away from Hughes for the rest of the Series. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Oct 29, 2009 -> 01:36 PM) You could see it coming, but Girardi waited 9 games to get around to it. .125 average is just flat out baaaaaad "Dirty .130"?
