  1. Mackowiak at third... rut roh. Hope that is just precautionary. Pretty easy to do with an 11 run lead.
  2. QUOTE(Heads22 @ Jul 4, 2006 -> 04:18 PM) f***in' Dye. We could have used another baserunner. Dye just wanted to keep the runners left on stat down.
  3. QUOTE(SnB @ Jul 4, 2006 -> 03:46 PM) yeah, strategy sucks Only when it works against us.
  4. I agree with Ozzie. He should not have to go through the friggin training. This political correctness crap has to end. He called a guy who has been taking cheap shots at him for three years a ***. Big fricken deal. Marriotti is a jackass and a coward. In other words... a ***. Not in the homosexual sense of the word but in the derogatory sense. All of the negative connotations of the word apply to Marriotti. In a league that has teams named the Braves and Indians (see the NCAA), this is a little hypocritical. As for Marriotti, he has now stopped just being an A-hole and is now effecting the on-field game. Not reading his columns is no longer enough. I am contacting advertisers in the Sun~Times and telling them I refuse to purchase their products because they advertise in the Times.
  5. "Baseball is a social institution with responsibility to set appropriate tone and example. Conduct or language that reflects otherwise will not be tolerated. The use of slurs embarrasses the individual, the club and the game." - Bud Selig. Hey Bud,
  6. On the loop on ESPN News, Marriotti says "Take me out of this." blah, blah.... No Jaygoff, you are in it. You can not goat a guy for years and then when he reacts act as if you are blameless. You own some of the responsibilty for his response. Be a man about it at least.
  7. With his home run in the bottom of the 6th inning, White Sox designated hitter Jim Thome moved to 27th on the all-time list passing Carl Yastrzemski.
  8. QUOTE(El Barto @ Jun 21, 2006 -> 09:14 PM) This garbage is now featured as the lead story on espn.com. Nice try to ruin the momentum but its not happening:) It is on a continuous loop every half hour on ESPN News. :headshake
  9. QUOTE(Cerbaho-WG @ Jun 21, 2006 -> 08:14 PM) You cannot be this shallow, right? *** has more of a negative connotation than s***head, asshole or any other "tame" slur. It is in the same league as sexual/ethnic slurs. Even though using the terms gay and *** are now pretty widespread, it's still no excuse for someone to use the word because it is still a highly volitaile and virulent thing to call someone. To a lot of people, it's the same as calling someone a k*** or n*****. Make no mistake, though, this is being blown well out of proportion only because Mariotti works for ESPN. Do I have a problem with Ozzie using the word ***? Yes. Is it a huge problem? Hell no. An aside, can we stop this man law s***? Did you guys finally get tired of Chuck Norris jokes and had to find something else immature to make you laugh? Shallow?!? I think shallow is when people who get offended by something so stupid. As far as I know, Mariotti is not a gay but I could be wrong. If he is and Ozzie knew it, then it is hateful. But I don't think that is the case. To be offended by it this case, when no hate speach is intended, is shallow. This politically correct crap should be left to Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton. People who live thier lives by the polically correct rules are the shallow ones, IMO.
  10. When you call someone a ***, you generally are attemting to insult the guy because the word has a negative context. If he called him an asshole, should all the assholes in the world be insulted? He called him a s*** and garbage. Is Mr. Hanky going to be protesting Comiskey Park? I don't expect to see a pink picket line outside the ball park anytime soon. But if it did happen, I would trample that line to get in. What is this? The Brady Bunch? Ozzie: Jay is being a real stinker!! Jerry: Ozzie, you know I don't like that word! Ozzie: Sorry Jer, but he is. Paaaleeese. Edit - Bwahahahahahaha!!! Sox Talk profanity filter blocks out the word!!!! I move that in support of Ozzie, the Admins change the filter to have the word allowed. -Man Law-
  11. Dye grounded into fielder´s choice to shortstop, Konerko out at second. Konerko singled to left center, Ozuna and Iguchi scored, Thome to second. Thome walked, Ozuna to third, Iguchi to second. Iguchi singled to center, Ozuna to second. Ozuna singled to left. Anderson struck out looking. Brad Thompson relieved Mark Mulder. Uribe homered to left center, Crede scored. Crede singled to left. Pierzynski homered to right, Konerko and Dye scored. Dye singled to right, Thome scored, Konerko to second. Konerko singled to left center, Iguchi scored, Thome to second. Thome singled to center, Iguchi to second. Iguchi singled to center, Anderson scored. Ozuna flied out to right. Anderson doubled to deep right, Uribe scored. Uribe doubled to center. What an inning.
  12. A lot will probably shake out in the comming weeks but as I look at it, there are only 10 teams that are "out of it". The entire NL West is only 2 games apart for crips sake. There are still 3 teams in the NLC. The AL West is still anyone's ball game. The East still has three contenders. With so many teams still in the hunt, it may be tough to find a suitable partner with solid offerings on both sides.
  13. Who are the Cubs going to send to the All-Star game? With Lee missing most of the first half, Barrett is the only field player with All-Star-ish like numbers but do you really want to send a guy who just sat out 10 games for assault? Zambrano? There are very few cases that could be made for Cubs players but when you look inside the stats, the case crumbles pretty easily. Bobby Howry or Scott Eyre are ok but you don't see set-up guys in the All-Star game. I am not trying to bust on the Cubs but this seemed like the most appropriate thread for this question. Who do the Cubs send to the All-Star game? I honestly don't know.
  14. I cook all my food outside before the game. The beer is good.
  15. First off, don't get me wrong. I am not anti-teacher. My sister is an assistant prinicple at my second oldest school. It is part of the system that is broken beyond repair. I have not ignored all the data. I have read the article and many like it that are written by the teachers unions and the NEA. I just consider the source. The IFT is hardly an unbiased source on the issue. And teachers may work long hours but you know what? So do the rest of us. Most of the working world does spend personal hours doing company business. I am not going to feel sorry for teachers. The average entry level teaching position in this state pulls down $37k (IFT data). Other states pull down over $50k plus. Not bad for 9 months of work. Within a few years on the job they are making pretty damn good coin. That is what is happening now. To blame the current condition on the recommended solution is… well, as you say, moronic. The inner city and rural poor schools are already suffering under THIS system. Every current failure measurement is 20% greater in these areas. The teachers unions do a good job of distributing blame, as do the politicians and administrators. The rich are already getting a good education. It is this system that is f***ing everybody else. The rich will always have nicer schools, teachers with higher degrees and bigger gyms. They also have bigger houses, faster cars and wives with bigger, firmer boobs. That is what money buys you. Better s***. It is what motivates people to get rich in the first place. But that is not the reason that the inner city schools fail. Stop blaming successful people for the failures of everyone else. Public education fails because success is not a component of the mission statement. The mission under a government run education system is equal access. A for profit education system could thrive in the inner cities with money already being spent there. It would produce better results than the 32% success rates we are getting now. They might not be able to play Lacrosse when they graduate but they will be able to read and write. Those skills come in handy when you are filling out your college application and financial aid applications.
  16. QUOTE(LowerCaseRepublican @ Jun 12, 2006 -> 03:31 PM) The educational system in this country is broken but a private system will not fix it. Being from IL, I have somewhat of a detailed background on Illinois schools..... http://www.aplusillinois.org/issues/facts.asp) So let's recap. Teachers are over worked, underpaid, not given enough support by management and have the cards stacked against them in an unfair system. Would you like some cheese with that whine? Welcome to the working world. I will try to remember how tough teachers have it when I am going to work all summer, when I am stuck in traffic on the Dan Ryan during 'spring break' or plowing through the snow to get to work during the formerly known as Christmas, "holiday" break. You are correct the education system is broken and the politicians, unions and administrators who have perpetuated this broken system for these many years should be held accountable. Private business can do this better regardless of the varying funding levels from school to school. You know why? Failure is not an option in business. If you fail in business, you don't get paid. Stock holders like it when thier companies get paid so they are going to succeed. Only in government work is any where from a 40-67% defective rate acceptable.
  17. I sat in sec. 110 row 25 a week ago (Right field corner). You can keep them. We were 4 seats off the isle and missed most of the game because of all the traffic up and down the isle. Eventually, we moved out to the outfield which is the best seat in the house, IMO. If you sit in the first 15 rows of 159 - 163, you have a great seat plus no disrupted view.
  18. Education in this country is broken. As evidence I offer the following statistics. 40% of 4th grade students in this country score below a 4th grade reading level at the end of the term. 67% of inner city and rural poor 4th grade students score below a 4th grade reading level at the end of the term. The 4th grade reading score is considered a benchmark because it is at this point in a student’s career that those above grade level begin to separate from those below grade level. Students below grade level in reading at 4th grade begin to fall further and further behind with the ability to make up the lost ground becoming more and more difficult. On average, the US spends $8,287 per student in public education. New Jersey is the highest with $12,981 and Utah the lowest with $5,008 per student. Public education is a billion dollar industry that continues to fail to produce a quality product in general. There are always examples of great schools and brilliant teachers but as a whole, the education process is broken. The return on investment is far too low. That is typical of any government run entity. A privately run system would be far more productive.
  19. QUOTE(CubsSuck1 @ Jun 10, 2006 -> 11:26 PM) How about giving Pablo a shot in center field in a platoon? Being that Mackowiaks main role is to step in and provide some offense in Anderson's position, I think Ozuna could do just as well if not better. He is hitting .400 albeit in only 60 ABs. In addition, he has shown the ability to step it up in clutch, and seems in be involved in some game changing play when hes in the lineup. Add in hisa speed and you have an amazingly versatile player. Yes, defense could be an issue, but if Pablo is just platooned, and Anderson is occasionally used as a defensive replacement, I dont think the team would take a huge hit. At the very least, I think he provides a better option than mack, and deserves a shot at it. Brian Anderson is your center fielder. Get used to the idea. Ozuna is a guy who will provide speed off the bench in situations when you need speed, period. Every team needs that role played. He is that role player. Don't make him more than he is.
  20. I remember attending a game in the Big A, the Yankees and Angels a few years back. Roger the Rocket was on the bump for the Yankees, so that will tell you how long ago it was. But Soriano was hitting leadoff (I think) for the Bronx Bombers and everytime I looked up, he was standing on third base. He has good speed and can get from first to third pretty quickly. If the Sox did get Soriano, I would like to see him hit second. I would also put Anderson after Dye to he can start to see some decent pitches and to split up the two auto outs of he and Uribe. So my line up would look some thing like this with Sariano. Pods Soriano Thome Konerko Dye Anderson Crede Gooch AJP Uribe/Cintron
  21. QUOTE(Bhay99 @ Jun 10, 2006 -> 01:48 PM) well hopefully we can win tomorrow and take the series, this game is a lost cause :finger "Don't give up, don't ever give up." - Jimmy Valvano
  22. Detroit is up 3-0 in the bottom of the second. Glaus comming to the plate.
  23. QUOTE(WCSox @ Jun 10, 2006 -> 01:49 PM) If anything good came out of that AB, he ran up Sabathia's pitch count. We need to get him out of there. When CC's on, as he is now, he's very tough. Exactly my point. He ran him up to about 10 pitches. He looked foolish on the third strike but he took a lot of bad pitches and fouled off some good ones. He needs to keep doing that kind of thing. He needs to battle good pitching and be disciplined. As far as I could see, CC didn't make any mistakes so I give Brain a C+ for that AB. He would get an A had he put the ball in play... even if it was an out.
