Sox at Washington 6-19 game thread 3:10 pm first pitch
QUOTE (Kalapse @ Jun 19, 2010 -> 12:03 PM) This is a big problem with young left handed hitters especially. They struggle against left handed pitching in the minors then get called up to the bigs at age 24, the manager sees that they couldn't hit lefties and sits them against most left handed pitchers so they never learn how to hit left handed pitching. 4 years later you have a 28 year old who couldn't hit a lefty to save his life mostly because he was never given the opportunity as a young player. If Viciedo can't hit righties then he has no future as an everyday player in the majors, it's as simple as that. And if we called him up to hit in a strict platoon with Vizquel then we're doing him an incredible disservice. Not to mention that Viciedo struggles against off-speed stuff, if I'm correct. That would be John Lannan's specialty, and he's the starter on Sunday.

With Melton and Big Frank, you get a lot of beef on the Comcast set.

QUOTE (fathom @ May 20, 2010 -> 10:42 PM) 2009 was the year of bad luck due to Mark Kotsay hitting a line drive right at Michael Cuddyer 2010 was the year of bad luck due to AJP hitting a ground rule double And an idea was born in the mind of Ozzie Guillen: "I have found a great DH. I will bat him 5th next year."

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 20, 2010 -> 10:19 PM) I can think of several other breaks that were worse, but it does suck. I think they should change the warning track to something softer. There are a ton of ground rule 2B at USCF. Felt. I like the idea of felt.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 20, 2010 -> 10:16 PM) Jones is trying to hit everything he swings at 700 ft. He does appear to be swinging from his ass at all times. Awesome. Jenks coming in when we're behind. Awesome.

12:05pm (CSN) - Sox @ Yanks
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ May 1, 2010 -> 03:38 PM) How much longer would you keep him in the 2 hole? The problem right now is we have about 5 guys where you say: "Well, I wouldn't want him to put any more pressure on himself by moving him up" -- Teahen, Rios, Pierre, Beckham, Quentin. It's ridiculous how fragile these guys are.

QUOTE (fathom @ May 1, 2010 -> 02:04 PM) I'm pretty sure the last Sox hitter to go upper deck at a Yankee park was Daubach. Maybe HE should bat leadoff.

Look, I know that he was pretty much like this when he had his big season, but Carlos Quentin is just a ball of stress at the plate. The guy looks like he's going to grind the bat handle to sawdust and spin himself into the ground. That cannot be a good recipe for hitting success. Right?

4/29 GT - Sox @ Rangers 1:05p CDT - CSN & MLBN
QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Apr 29, 2010 -> 03:33 PM) huge pick by kong on a terrible throw by the cuban Ramirez is still dropping down on important throws. Between that and his pirouette moves when turning the DP, I don't think he's gotten one bit better since the end of last year. (And that's not even counting the fact that he still looks back over his shoulder when running the bases, first to third, instead of picking up the 3rd base coach. He's a real fundamentals whiz.)

LOL. I looked up to see the ball headed into right center, and saw someone gracefully moving over to catch it. I thought, Jesus, Quentin looks pretty good out there. But, of course, A. Jones. Quentin may not have even seen it.

QUOTE (southsideirish71 @ Apr 27, 2010 -> 08:58 PM) Flip his card. Its cold. Hes not loosey goosey. He knows how to hit already, its coming. This reminded me of something. Why was it that when Thome or Dye struggled, Walker would say "flip his card" -- but when Wise and Kotsay sucked as one would expect from their "cards", Ozzie thought they'd be really good instead?

QUOTE (fathom @ Apr 27, 2010 -> 08:56 PM) If you want to play a fun drinking game, take shots every time Beckham fouls one down the right field line. You'll be drunk in no time. He actually looks worse than he did at any time last year. Even when he was struggling after he came up, I remember thinking that he was actually swinging pretty well. Not so much now.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Apr 27, 2010 -> 08:34 PM) How many times do we see this happen. For the love of God, you have to get the guy in from third. You have to have a plan. The baseball IQ of this team is questionable. You, sir, are in a generous mood.

QUOTE (fathom @ Apr 27, 2010 -> 07:52 PM) Yeah, those 10 minutes on the radio are killing him! He'll be fine, he's just messed up at the plate. He was streaky last year as well. Try 30 minutes a shot, at least twice a week - on top of his various commercials, another position change and the league adjusting to him. I'm sure he'll be fine, but you bet that when he is, we'll hear that Gordon just "needed to settle in" -- I think it would happen faster without the distractions. And, if you notice, we need it to happen . . . faster.
