  1. QUOTE (illinilaw08 @ Apr 25, 2016 -> 08:09 PM) I don't really have an issue with them killing off Stannis generally. He was going to war with the Boltons, and it's reasonable that battle would end with Stannis' death. What I had a problem with was how Stannis went out with a whimper. The "battle" was just a slaughter on an open field. I'm all for them bringing plots together. Martin had to split Books 4 and 5 because he had so many separate threads going. In an hour show, it's tough to do justice to 13 different plots... His death was weak, but he had to go. We've got limited hours left, gotta cut down the field of contenders. Melisandre predictions? Has a new vision that Jon is THE ONE? Sacrifices herself to rez Jon? Sacrifices someone else to rez Jon? Too depressed to do anything?
  2. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Apr 25, 2016 -> 08:42 PM) And i still dont get why they killed Stannis off like they did. He ran out of stuff to do. And he ain't Azor Ahai.
  3. QUOTE (TaylorStSox @ Apr 25, 2016 -> 08:14 PM) Of course Oberyn wanted to kill all the Lannisters. That's why he was in King's Landing in the first place. He would have never killed Doran though. Why would he have cared about legal combat? He's avenging 2 babies that were raped and stomped to death. That's slightly different than poisoning a teenager. Oberyn wanted to kill the people responsible for the deaths of Elia and her infant. Clegane, Lorch, Tywin. Not every person who happened to have the last name Lannister. Doran, who was on the same vengeance track as Oberyn (albeit as 'the grass', rather than 'the viper') was appalled to learn that Myrcella was murdered. Oberyn would have been too. Doran and Trystane even more so. Killing an innocent woman and her child seems pretty similar to killing an innocent girl, ethically. I brought up the legal combat because Oberyn knew what he was getting into. It's not like someone stabbed him in the back. Dude lost a fight he agreed to take part in. Shouldn't have been showing off so much. Edit: I should add that Oberyn's other big goal was getting the Mountain to admit to his crimes.
  4. QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Apr 25, 2016 -> 07:43 PM) Woah, people don't want to see Cersei punished? Yea she has her moments of pity but damn she's up on the list for most people on who they'd like to see revenge on. Cersei JUST had a round of comeuppance. And while, yes, she is an antagonist and people wish bad things on her, I think viewers LIKE her on the show. She's interesting, and entertaining. I definitely don't want to see her knocked off.
  5. QUOTE (TaylorStSox @ Apr 25, 2016 -> 07:19 PM) The audience wanted vengeance for Obyren. The Sand Snakes are providing that. They're not providing that at all. They've killed 3 people Oberyn would never have wanted killed. They've betrayed Oberyn. Moreover, Oberyn's death wasn't an injustice. He entered a legal combat and lost. So how do you avenge him? Kill the Mountain? Sorry, he's dead. Kill Tywin, who was largely responsible for the original grudge? Sorry, he's dead. Lannisters in general? That's silly. I don't think anyone watching GoT was clamoring for the deaths of Doran, Trystane, or Myrcella, nor do they want to see characters like Cersei, Jaime, and Tommen eat it. If anything, most viewers want the Sand Snakes to die so they don't have to be on screen anymore.
  6. QUOTE (illinilaw08 @ Apr 25, 2016 -> 06:20 PM) I couldn't even tell you which Sand Snake is which in the show because they are so indistinguishable from one another... Spearia Sand is the one with the spear. Her main personality traits are being angry and b****y. Whippy Sand is the one with the whip. Her main personality traits are being angry and b****y. Daggara Sand is the one with the daggers. Her main personality traits are being angry and b****y. DUH
  7. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Apr 25, 2016 -> 05:39 PM) Eventually he was going to align with the Targaryen's, but now who the F knows what the plot is. I assume since Connington doesnt really exist that the Aegon plot wont either. Yeah I assume that's been dumped.
  8. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Apr 25, 2016 -> 05:28 PM) When you come in talkin' about shooting less three pointers your ship pretty much sailed in 1989. That only works if your roster is 12 Josh Smiths
  9. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Apr 25, 2016 -> 05:13 PM) But even book Doran had no real plans taking place. They were just sitting in Dorne. He was definitely a different person and wasnt all that close to being overthrown He had the Arienne + Viserys plan. And the Quentyn plan. And then the plan with Griff. He's pretty active. Not terribly successful, but he's tryin'.
  10. QUOTE (illinilaw08 @ Apr 25, 2016 -> 05:07 PM) Not sure what Dorne looks like re: succession, but I have a really hard time believing Ellaria is anywhere the front of that succession... Ellaria has zero claim to control over Dorne. I'm guessing they're just going to pretend she has control because all of the people of Dorne somehow support her now, despite the show not giving us any reason to believe that. Even those guards looked more "deer in the headlights, oh s*** they killed Areo" than "Hell yeah, finally the right people in power now". QUOTE (illinilaw08 @ Apr 25, 2016 -> 05:07 PM) Plus, the biggest issue with Dorne at the moment is moving forward. Dorne is making a play vs. the Lannisters. But that threatens to spread the Lannister plot very thin. We already have the Lannisters dealing with the Faith... a faction that Dorne certainly doesn't fit into... so how will Dorne organically fit into what's happening in King's Landing at the moment... I predict that the two Snakes On a Boat will infiltrate King's Landing and try to kill some Lannisters, but get smoked by Robert Strong and/or Jaime. Cersei will send Ellaria a "U MAD BRO?" letter.
  11. QUOTE (ZoomSlowik @ Apr 25, 2016 -> 04:59 PM) At least book-Doran had some plans even if they were taking forever. "I am not blind, nor deaf. I know that you all believe me weak, frightened, feeble. Your father knew me better. Oberyn was ever the viper. Deadly, dangerous, unpredictable. No man dared tread on him. I was the grass. Pleasant, complaisant, sweet-smelling, swaying with every breeze. Who fears to walk upon the grass? But it is the grass that hides the viper from his enemies and shelters him until he strikes. Your father and I worked more closely than you know … but now he is gone. The question is, can I trust his daughters to serve me in his place?" - book Doran "I need to sit down, my feet hurt." - tv Doran
  12. QUOTE (bmags @ Apr 25, 2016 -> 04:57 PM) Ha, I do have zero clue how they ended up on the ship and the establishing shot was so quick I did not evern really understand what was going on. Why would he even still be on the ship? They watched Jaime's ship sail away from the docks in Dorne. Then they got on a faster ship, caught up right when they got to King's Landing, and secretly boarded Jaime's ship. Then they killed the Lannister guards on board (I'm sure Nymeria was especially helpful because whips are really effective weapons in cramped, indoor spaces) and gleefully killed their cousin. Next episode they'll be back in Dorne.
  13. QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Apr 25, 2016 -> 03:45 PM) She did go bonkers in the book, she just lost in her attempt though and ended up believing in Doran's plan. It's been a while since I read it, but how did she go bonkers? I recall her being pretty reasonable while the Sand Snake daughters wanted revenge in various ways. Lilling Myrcella, performing a coup, killing Doran/Trystane, and wanting to lead Dorne to war are completely departures.
  14. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Apr 25, 2016 -> 03:34 PM) The thing is the show has broken off from the books. I dont know if it would have happened in time in the books but they certainly made them snap and takeover in the show. I'm totally cool with the show departing from the books. For example, the massive fast forward in Brienne's storyline gets an A+ from me. But this Dorne material is a mess. If it's the case that GRRM told D&D that the Dorne "slow plays" don't really amount to much in the end, then I really wish they would have just dropped it entirely. Dorne has been easily the worst-received portion of the entire TV show (bad acting, bad 'action', bad writing) and we just found out we're going to be getting more of the worst part of it - the Sand Snakes. Can anyone explain why the Sand Snakes who magically teleported onto the ship were so happy to be killing their cousin, who had never done anything to them? Are they supposed to be fiery/fiesty or sadistic? LOL ONE LINER
  15. QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Apr 25, 2016 -> 03:21 PM) I agree on the badness of TV Dorne, but I don't agree with every statement you made. Oberyn's little girls statement was much more tongue in cheek than anything, you really think that Dorne of all places never had little girls killed in their massively violent history? Please. On top of that, Ellaria saw the love of her life's head smashed in, right in front of her. I could imagine that may change one's motives/actions pretty quickly. His statement was not-so-hidden insult pointing out that a Martell girl wasn't kept safe in King's Landing, and that Dorne is better because they actually would keep Myrcella safe. Dorne is also the most progressive of the 7 kingdoms in terms of how girls and women are treated. I understand seeing Oberyn die would be traumatic, but it shouldn't have made her completely bonkers. It certainly didn't in the books.
  16. QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ Apr 25, 2016 -> 02:45 PM) I thought this episode was sort of a nod to people who hate the Dorne story line in the books. "We're ending this s***, right here, right now." No 15 minute scenes with him watching kids play in a pool. The women are 100 times more interesting anyway. But they're not ending it. They're just making it really stupid. The TV Sand Snakes are f'in terrible. You're the first person I've ever heard say anything positive about the Sand Snakes or post-S4 Ellaria. Ellaria has become a complete contradiction of Oberyn. "We don't kill little girls in Dorne." LOL NM YEAH WE DO. And then she murders his brother and nephew too. Way to honor his memory, lady. Who's even supposed to be ruling Dorne now? Every Martell is either dead or was written out of the show. I guess we're supposed to believe Ellaria is in charge because reasons? Gimme a break.
  17. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Apr 25, 2016 -> 02:54 PM) How hard is it to install a toilet? I dont feel like paying someone. Never done it personally, but I've seen it done twice and it looked pretty straightforward. I'm pretty confident you could watch a couple YouTube videos and get it done.
  18. QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Apr 25, 2016 -> 01:28 PM) If Ghost was locked up and out of sight I'm not sure how that could have happened. I thought warging only happened when you could see the object you were warging into (green dreams not withstanding) I recall various book Starks in the book warging into their direwolves while they were asleep. They initially thought they were dreaming. So I don't think there's any hard and fast rule about visibility.
  19. QUOTE (ZoomSlowik @ Apr 25, 2016 -> 01:59 AM) Seriously, f*** Dorne. I loled at the dude generally considered a top 10 badass warrior dying by tiny shiv in the shoulder. Dorne is a complete waste of time.
  20. QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Apr 19, 2016 -> 06:46 PM) So, Connor McGregor just retired Conor McGregor needs some attention.
  21. QUOTE (illinilaw08 @ Apr 18, 2016 -> 08:48 PM) Ok, change it to "avoid dark alleys" late at night. The point is that in both the hypothetical crime example and the real sexual assault example, the first part of the answer is fine and addresses real policy details re: victims of sexual assault. At no point in the answer does Kasich make any policy statement regarding sexual assault prevention other than to say "avoid parties with lots of alcohol." To me, that quote isn't as bad if it's in response to the question "what would you tell your daughter to try to reduce her risk of sexual assault" or if the answer followed other policy positions involving sexual assault prevention. It was a bad answer within the context of the question. If Kasich was asked by a young man how to feel safer from muggings, and Kasich had ended his reply with "and avoid dark alleys late at night", I don't think he'd be facing any of the backlash he is now.
  22. QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Apr 18, 2016 -> 06:48 PM) Maybe, maybe not. I'd be curious to see the statistics about rape involving alcohol versus not involving alcohol. Brief google searching indicates that around 2/3 of college sexual assaults involve alcohol. I'd be shocked if the results were different. Bad effects for both victim and attacker. Lower inhibitions, increased aggressiveness, f***ed up perception, low awareness, inability to defend oneself, damage to memory, etc.
  23. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Apr 18, 2016 -> 06:29 PM) But the discussion of sexual assault is always centered around what the victims, usually women, were doing 'wrong'. "Don't wear short skirts, don't drink, don't go out to bars etc." Well...yeah, because the discussion is made amongst non-rapists. Here's what we can do to protect ourselves. On the topic of home robberies, people talk about alarm systems and locking your doors and having a big dog, not telling robbers not to rob. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Apr 18, 2016 -> 06:29 PM) The discussion isn't with young men on how to avoid potentially becoming the assaulter, about them not going to parties where alcohol is served, about "no means no." There seems to be A LOT of discussion about issues of consent, "no means no", the move towards "yes means yes", etc. Those discussions are aimed toward generally well-meaning people, of course, not wolves. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Apr 18, 2016 -> 06:29 PM) This can actually be a pretty tricky line! I don't have a clear-cut answer here, but I will cop-out and say I know when something is victim-blaming and Kasich responding to a question about what he'd do to improve safety by telling young women to not go to parties pretty clearly crosses that line. It is literally a text-book example of how victim-blaming plays out and assaulters get acquittals. If there's a line, there's gotta be *something* you'd view as clearly on the okay side of it. Can you elaborate on your acquittals statement? Has there been a case where a woman was definitely raped, but the defendant was acquitted because the jury blamed the victim for her decisions?
  24. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Apr 18, 2016 -> 07:02 PM) Why is it on women to change their lives and not engage in otherwise normal activities rather than on the assaulters? It's already on the assaulters. That's why their actions are crimes that can result in severe penalties. There's no one advocating for rape legalization here. Is there any form of sexual assault safety advice that women could be given that wouldn't constitute victim-blaming?
  25. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Apr 18, 2016 -> 05:57 PM) Telling women not to go to parties (or drink, or go to clubs, or dress certain ways) puts at least some of the responsibility on the victims whether Kasich intended to or not. And when it comes to sexual assaults, the focus far too often is on what the victims did 'wrong' rather than on what the perpetrators did wrong. Telling someone not to go to alcohol-fueled college s***shows is like telling them not to travel down dark alleys alone. You should be able to do either without worrying about being victimized in some way. But reality is that you can't, and avoiding those situations is one step you can take to keep yourself safer. A victim in either situation does not deserve to be a victim, nor do they merit any blame.
