  1. Ridiculous that Weiber, who finished 4th in qualifiers, doesn't make the 24-person All-Around competition because two other Americans were ahead of her.
  2. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 29, 2012 -> 06:04 PM) I read a good column by Leonard Pitts saying that the liberal media never mentions the possibility that there is evil in the world and that evil has been around forever. He said it makes as much sense as anything to ask the Lord (the person the liberal media and Bill Maher say do not exist) to fix things. I can't imagine why the media should mention mythology in the news. "We've set new record high temperatures this week. It's time to pray to Ra the Sun god, because he is clearly angry with us." They're supposed to be reporting facts.
  3. QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Jul 27, 2012 -> 08:55 PM) Which, according to the sexual harassment seminar we had to sit through at work, is completely legal. Yes, it is. I'm just saying that the Alderman's justification is "Chick-Fil-A sucks because they promote anti-gay work", not "Chick-Fil-A sucks because it likes Christianity". If the standard for excuses needed to keep a business out is as small as people in this thread have said, I think he'll be alright. The problem with Chick-Fil-A is actions, not simply beliefs.
  4. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jul 27, 2012 -> 09:28 PM) But he specifically cited a religious belief as the basis for denying the permit. Not his communities preference of one chain over another. That's unconstitutional. That's not quite true. He cited Chick-Fil-A's promotion of discrimination against gay people.
  5. QUOTE (Brian @ Jul 26, 2012 -> 10:07 PM) How hard is it to make your own website? Pretty easy these days with stuff like wordpress
  6. QUOTE (Reddy @ Jul 25, 2012 -> 07:42 PM) are the muslims operating a business that is privy to anti-discrimination laws or a private religious institution that can do whatever it wants? Unless Chick-Fil-A is discriminating against gay customers or employees, rather than just promoting a political view, I don't see how anti-discrimination laws apply.
  7. QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Jul 23, 2012 -> 09:26 PM) Your answers are in Genesis and Revelation. After the "fall of man" sin and death entered the world. The story of Cain and Abel was the first murder. Sodom and Gomorrah was listed as "sin so grievous" that only the story of Lot is recorded. In Revelation there is prophecy of evil becoming greater. Evil has always existed. I'm pretty sure greg was looking for an answer to the Problem of Evil, not for a mythological origin story for sin.
  8. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jul 23, 2012 -> 08:18 PM) If its just purely symbolic, why do it? Kick in the balls of the program. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jul 23, 2012 -> 08:18 PM) And how do you know its not a concrete harm? ...how is it? QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jul 23, 2012 -> 08:18 PM) My guess is that there are some players who would rather be fined than lose their records/wins/etc. I know I would, you can make more money, cant go back in time and win more games. What use do NCAA-certified game wins have in these players' lives? Are they going to suffer great harm when they tell a personal anecdote about a dramatic game they won and a listener says "Nope, that story has been invalidated!"
  9. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Jul 23, 2012 -> 07:48 PM) There's no getting Superman right. He's the most boring character, not only in comics, but in the history of fictional characters. "The Hulk is super strong" "Yeah, but Superman is stronger" "The Flash is super fast" "But Superman is faster" He's the equivalent of that kid we all knew growing up that had to top everyone's stories. There's no good drama with that character. But he was killed* by Doomsday!! *knocked into a temporary cure-nap
  10. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jul 23, 2012 -> 08:06 PM) This is why your comparison to JPM makes no mistake. JPM has money Dimon has money They are not the same money, so when JPM gets fined, it does not touch Dimon's money. When you have wins, that are the schools, that are the coaches and the players, you have a much different issue. Forgetting Paterno for a second, what about the players? They did nothing wrong, yet all of their victories are now tarnished. If JPM makes a mistake, the regular employees dont lose money that they already earned. Its just a far more complicated issue, and yeah its easy to say "PSU deserves it", but does everyone at PSU really deserve it? I dont know. I don't think the removal of wins, which is almost purely a symbolic gesture, is at all comparable to fining employees, which is a direct and concrete harm.
  11. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jul 23, 2012 -> 06:41 PM) As I said before, even a criminal gets to have his family ask for leniency. You dont have to give it, but this whole thing would be wrapped up if they simply let the Paterno's vent, and then handed out the same penalties. The Paternos have been venting. If they had any extra relevant information to provide or a reasonable defense of JoePa, they'd have given it. But instead, they just say "NUH UH!" over and over.
  12. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jul 23, 2012 -> 06:39 PM) Its not about what his wife thinks. Its about does his wife have relevant information to the investigation. You cant willfully ignore witnesses who may have information that hurts your case. How do you know this? How do you know that Paterno's wife didnt have information that could exculpate her husband? Mrs. Paterno has evidence that could exculpate her husband but has been keeping it to herself for months? That's nuts.
  13. QUOTE (Reddy @ Jul 20, 2012 -> 02:41 PM) Monsanto's website states, "There is no need for, or value in testing the safety of GM foods in humans. So long as the introduced protein is determined safe, food from GM crops determined to be substantially equivalent is not expected to pose any health risks. Further, it is impossible to design a long-term safety test in humans, which would require, for example, intake of large amounts of a particular GM product over a very large portion of the human life span. There is simply no practical way to learn anything via human studies of whole foods. This is why no existing food--conventional or GM--or food ingredient/additive has been subjected to this type of testing." Can you give us a plausible means of harm?
  14. QUOTE (farmteam @ Jul 19, 2012 -> 08:01 PM) Yeah. I'm mostly worried about the little things I'm not used to, like "Oh hey you peed everywhere!" or "Oh hey thanks for sitting on me you're so cute OH WAIT YOU PEED ON ME." But still mostly excited. Plus, it's his dog, so he's paying for it, primarily taking care of it, etc. I'm just along for the ride. What are your roommates house-training plans? Is he experienced with raising a puppy?
  15. QUOTE (farmteam @ Jul 19, 2012 -> 07:42 PM) My roommate is out right now to go pick up a 2 month old golden lab. I've never had a dog, or any other free-roaming pet, before. I'm about 80% excited and 20% terrified. Don't be scared. Cats and dogs are awesome. Could be a little annoying at the beginning though due to EXCESSIVE PUPPY ENERGY HELLO I LOVE YOU HEY LETS PLAY THIS LOOKS GOOD TO CHEW.
  16. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jul 19, 2012 -> 05:28 PM) Go read the wiki page SS linked and there are people in the group that were there or in the same area at the time of some of those claims of heroism. Yes, other people piled on and the whole thing got discredited, but not all of them. Which particular claim? All the guys who served on his boat at the time of those claims backed them up. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jul 19, 2012 -> 05:28 PM) In reality Swiftboating should have been "Dan Rathering," when you lose all journalistic integrity and promote a completely fake document to establish your point. Oh, but that was against Bush and he won so it didn't stick. The Dan Rather thing was an incident of s***ty journalism, not a political smear campaign. Swiftboating is the far better term.
  17. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Jul 19, 2012 -> 04:51 PM) It's not a joke, even if it is to you, because there are a lot of people that actually feel that way. Green text or not... There are a lot of people who think stores that close on Sundays or Christmas should be sued and forced to open on those days? I don't believe it.
  18. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jul 19, 2012 -> 04:13 PM) I HATE the fact that "swiftboating" has become an adjective for smear campaigns. It was a credibility ad which is no different than the ad Obama just put out against Romney that you think is so amazing. "Hey, this guy says he's awesome, here's why he's not!" It was totally a smear campaign. "I served with John Kerry* and those medals he got were BS**" * We were both in Vietnam on boats ** I'm guessing, since I wasn't actually there Swift Boat Vets for Truth should have been called Bitter Republican Vets for Bush.
  19. QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 19, 2012 -> 03:35 PM) It's too good not to eat. The fries are above average, the chicken is below average. Easily skippable.
  20. QUOTE (Reddy @ Jul 19, 2012 -> 03:21 PM) so then why won't Monsanto perform the tests if there's nothing to hide? BT has been tested on humans with no effects. I imagine there'd be more testing if there was even a plausible biological harm.
  21. QUOTE (Reddy @ Jul 19, 2012 -> 12:47 PM) Really? It makes NO sense? Modifying corn so that it already has the pesticide INSIDE IT isn't bad? the corn is produced so that if an insect eats it, that insect dies. So the corn is deadly to insects but can't POSSIBLY cause any adverse reaction in humans after long-term exposure? As far as I can tell, BT is made to only harm a few insect species. Its effect is on gut receptors that humans don't even have.
  22. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 18, 2012 -> 02:13 PM) Give them a day or two, they may still call you back. Then you know you have them. Yup. Car salesman NEED sales. Unless you're being ridiculously unreasonable, they'll chase you.
  23. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Jul 10, 2012 -> 03:20 PM) It was designed to make them, in specific, melt down...it was an expected stupid reaction from the stupid. But let's not pretend the opportunistically offended didn't join the fray. It was pretty obviously a troll.
  24. QUOTE (Iwritecode @ Jun 28, 2012 -> 07:50 PM) I have to take my husky in on Saturday to be put to sleep. They found a large tumor in his abdomen and said that's it's inoperable. He won't eat anything so he would starve to death otherwise. He's 13 so he's pretty old. He's slowed down a lot in the past couple years. That sucks, dude. Remember you gave him a good (and pretty long) life.
  25. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jul 5, 2012 -> 02:40 PM) It was the 4th of July. Lighten up. That's the 5th of July!
