QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 9, 2012 -> 11:13 PM) It wasn't that long ago you could have found a majority of people who wouldn't vote for a black President either. Or a Catholic. Very true. I have no doubt that acceptance of non-religious people will continue to grow. It's just not there yet.
-
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ May 9, 2012 -> 09:29 PM) But if the overwhelming majority of people are religious and consider religious belief to be a "must," why isn't that number closer to 80-85% (the number of people in the US who consider themselves religious)? Because the number of people who are seriously religious is way lower than 80-85%. There are a lot of "I go to mass only on Easter and Christmas and haven't read the Bible in 10 years" folks in that 80%.
-
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ May 9, 2012 -> 09:55 PM) For something so "important," 50% seems like a small number. ? It means they basically automatically lose.

QUOTE (greg775 @ May 9, 2012 -> 08:20 PM) Or maybe my mind just races and I come up with wild questions. No problem, dude. I don't think you're a psycho who would murder me if he lost his religious faith.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ May 9, 2012 -> 08:10 PM) It's not the right or wrong of it, it's coming off as smarmy that gets annoying and frankly I just don't get the need for it. All it does is get the right to be even more stringent in their position and doesn't advance the ball at all. I don't intend to come across as smarmy, but I will be blunt. Religion is too often treated with kid gloves in this country. Some beliefs are simply stupid. I know they're stupid and you know they're stupid, but if you say it, suddenly you're "angry". There are certain people for whom the ball cannot be advanced against.
-
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ May 9, 2012 -> 07:42 PM) People being vehement (or straight up angry) about someone believing in something they don't believe. I think my post made it pretty clear that my problem is with the EFFECTS of the beliefs, like on laws or education. I couldn't care less if Joe Schmoe personally believes; I care about how those beliefs affect society.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ May 9, 2012 -> 07:39 PM) Exhibit A. Was there anything inaccurate in my post?
-
QUOTE (greg775 @ May 9, 2012 -> 08:27 PM) Why? I am actually a conservative Christian and pretty good person IMO. Because it makes it sound like if you didn't believe in your god, YOU would be some crazy hedonist.

QUOTE (Tex @ May 9, 2012 -> 07:57 PM) The Bible wasn't designed as a tool. Science has done an excellent job of furthering human knowledge about God's creation. Amazing actually. Revelation is considered a source of knowledge to those who believe in it. It is the least reliable form of knowledge. I believe it should be discouraged.
-
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ May 9, 2012 -> 08:18 PM) Perhaps it's both extremes, but I tend to feel that religious people get attacked much more as being morons that haven't accepted we live in a modern world full of the almighty science. Why is this a surprise given that religion teaches absurdities like a 6,000 year old Earth or man living amongst dinosaurs? A significant portion of people in America believe things like this, and worse still, want this nonsense taught in public schools.
-
QUOTE (greg775 @ May 8, 2012 -> 10:48 PM) Do you guys live your lives wildly then? Why not just go crazy if this all means nothing? If you are going to just be done when you die and not cognizant of anything in heaven, then why not be reckless pursuers of debauchery? Just FYI, these types of questions reveal far more about the questioner than the people he or she is asking.
-
QUOTE (Tex @ May 8, 2012 -> 09:57 PM) And of course science has always been correct and never changes. Science has been an extremely effective tool to further human knowledge. One cannot say the same for 'revelation'.
-
QUOTE (farmteam @ May 8, 2012 -> 06:04 PM) Oh I cannot WAIT to see where this is heading.

Most mammals do it. There's just not much of a point for any human mother to do it.

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ May 7, 2012 -> 04:45 PM) As for the 24 hour waiting period, generally you have to go to an gyno, then you have to have an appointment set, so to me that would cover 24 hour waiting period. I would have to see exactly what is proposed Usually it means you have to see the doctor and wait 24 hours from that point.

QUOTE (Y2HH @ May 7, 2012 -> 02:53 PM) Did you actually just compare an invasive abortion procedure to that of a mole removal? Many early abortions are done with pills. They're not procedures at all.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ May 7, 2012 -> 05:28 AM) So apparently the woman who went onto the court during the Laker/Denver game is a Kenyon Martin stalker and was calling for him? Sources tell @YahooSports say they believe the girl that ran on floor in Denver was the same one that stalked Kenyon Martin in his DEN days. Sources also tell also tell @YahooSports the woman was screaming: "Where is Kenyon?" to @denvernuggets bench before running on floor. Shouldn't she know what team he's on? STALKER FAIL -
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ May 4, 2012 -> 04:28 AM) The end of Aasif Mandvi's bit in the Daily Show was absolutely hilarious. Wow

QUOTE (Brian @ May 3, 2012 -> 11:43 PM) CW, how does a vet make uh an awful mistake? No clue.

Took my dog in to the spay and neuter clinic on Tuesday. They call us shortly after we drop her off and tell us they don't want to perform the surgery because she'd riddled with cancer...all over her abdominal wall, spleen, uterus, liver. After two days of grief and sadness that our dog probably won't live a month, we take her to our regular vet for exploratory surgery to figure out how bad it is and how long she has before it kills her. He calls us shortly after he starts the operation to inform us that all her organs look FINE and that all he could find was a couple nodules in her abdominal tissue which are probably nothing (but being tested). He removed them. TLDR: one vet tells us our dog has horrible cancer, two days later another says she's fine

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ May 2, 2012 -> 06:58 PM) That's going to be my wife's biggest concern by far. She knows that they're going to hate it, at least for a while, but she doesn't want to introduce anything dangerous. I have one skiddish cat. When we introduced a new dog, she was very scared at first, but gradually got better. One thing that helped was a very tall cat tree. She could sit at the top and observe the dog walking around without feeling threatened at all. She eventually learned the dog was no big deal.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ May 2, 2012 -> 06:16 PM) We're looking at adopting a dog after we get back from vacation in about 6 weeks. Anyone have recommendations on local shelters/rescue societies? Last 3 animals my family has gotten were from Anderson Animal Shelter in South Elgin. They do a good job.

QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ May 2, 2012 -> 05:40 PM) First few weeks no chewing issues, now she loves chewing on the ends of furniture, including table legs and stuff. WTF? She has like 12 toys. How to stop this behavior? I'm going to get some more larger bones in hopes those will curb it, not sure what else to do. I have no experience using it, but what about Bitter Apple? You spray it on things and it makes it unpleasant for dogs to chew them.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ May 2, 2012 -> 03:23 PM) The second season seems to be diverging a bit more. They pushed one of the best scenes in the series from book 3 up into the latest episode and changed it (how the Tickler dies). It was a good scene in the show but so much more awesome in the book. book 3 spoilers

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ May 1, 2012 -> 05:54 PM) So I was checking out this highlight from last night's Mavs/OKC game. How was Perkins not thrown out? That's a pretty clear attempt at a punch. Isn't that a zero tolerance thing? http://www.nba.com/video/channels/playoffs..._okc_play2.nba/ His hand looks open to me. Kind of a "GTFO of here" kind of arm-flinging push.
