  1. QUOTE (BearSox @ Jun 12, 2008 -> 09:14 PM) is it too early to declare Wasserman a AAAA player? Oh, yeah.... Shoot... he had a nice audition last year. He continues to throw well in the minors... he'll get a couple more shots. You don't give up on a guy because he pitched poorly in 6 innings of major league ball this year. You can tell what he needs to work on. Lefties. Tonight they called him into the Norfolk game specifically to face 4 consecutive left-handed hitters. He struck out two of them. So... that's good progress.
  2. Santo Luis was very sharp in a spot start in place of Nathan Jones. Luis went 5 innings, gave up 1 unearned run on 2 hits, struck out 9 and walked none. I think he might have earned himself another start.
  3. Despite Richard's great start, the pitching performance of the night goes to John Ely. Ely went 7 innings, gave up 0 runs on 1 hit, struck out 8, and walked none in a 1-0 Winston-Salem win. Wow.
  4. Owens was 3-5 tonight. His average is up to .269.
  5. Danny Richar did something I've never heard of before... He got picked off twice in the same inning. He was picked off 1B and Norfolk screwed up the play, allowing Richar to go to second. Then on the very next play, the pitcher spun around and picked Richar off second. With baserunning like that he should fit right in on the big club.
  6. Richard gave up 2 runs as he worked out some 1st inning jitters... then had 5 consecutive 1-2-3 innings. He finally gave up a single in the 7th after retiring 17 consecutive batters. No damage done however. Charlotte up 3-2 after 7 innings... and that was the final score. Wasserman came in pitched two innings and earned the save. (The runs given up by Richard in the first inning were aided by a balk call on a pickoff play, where he had a guy picked off first... who eventually scored. You could tell it rattled him and he gave up a few cheap hits. The announcer complained that it was the third balk this ump has called on pickoff moves in this series... two against the Knights. Marc Bombard came out to complain, but to no effect.) A little about Richard's stuff from what I'm picking up on the broadcast... his breaking pitches are clocking in the high 70's... his fastball is regularly hitting 92 mph. Had a sweeping curve as one of his pitches.
  7. Picking up right where he left off... In his first AAA at-bat, David Cook hit a single and drove in a run.
  8. Charlotte @ Norfolk - 7:15 EDT Clayton Richard scheduled to get his first AAA start. Link to milb.com audio (free but registration req'd) Box Score Birmingham @ Carolina - 7:15 EDT Justin Cassel (5-3, 3.80) pitching Game Notes (pdf) Box Score Winston-Salem @ Wilmington - 7:05 EDT John Ely (2-6, 4.08) pitching Box Score Lexington @ Kannapolis - 7:05 EDT Santo Luis (5-3, 4.46) with his second start of the year Box Score Game Notes (pdf)
  9. Jerry Owens seems to have woken up... Hitting .381 over his last 10 games. (Up to .261 now.) Ditto Jason Bourgeois... who is hitting .378 in his last 10 games. (Up to .248). Josh Fields... batting .333 in his last 10 and .266 on the season. Chris Getz remains hot. Batting .389 in his last 10 and averaging .312 on the season.
  10. Richar ending up getting a hit in the 9th. And Fields hit another double. As of this note, the game is still going. The first 7 Charlotte hitters in the 9th got hits. Summary below... Charlotte Top 9th - Pitcher Change: Esteban Yan replaces Fernando Cabrera. - Jerry Owens singles on a line drive to left fielder Brandon Fahey. - With Josh Fields batting, Jerry Owens steals (16) 2nd base. - Josh Fields doubles (8) on a line drive to center fielder Chris Roberson. Jerry Owens scores. - Danny Richar singles on a ground ball to second baseman Eider Torres. Josh Fields to 3rd. - Brad Eldred doubles (17) on a line drive to center fielder Chris Roberson. Josh Fields scores. Danny Richar to 3rd. - Dewayne Wise hits a ground-rule double (12) on a fly ball to right field. Danny Richar scores. Brad Eldred scores. - Pitcher Change: Chris Waters replaces Esteban Yan. - Jason Bourgeois singles on a line drive to left fielder Brandon Fahey. Dewayne Wise to 3rd. - Chris Getz singles on a line drive to right fielder Jeff Fiorentino. Dewayne Wise scores. Jason Bourgeois to 2nd. A couple more hits and runs scored before the end of the inning. Charlotte up 11-2, so they brought in MacDougal to close it out. Not sure if that's enough of a cushion for him though.
  11. Charlotte @ Norfolk Lance Broadway vs. Ryan Bukvich http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/st...chraaa_noraaa_1 Charlotte won 11-2. See notes in another post below. Birmingham @ Carolina McCulloch pitching http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/st...biraax_cmcaax_1 Barons won 7-2. McCulloch had a very nice outing. 7 innings; 0 runs; 6 hits; 4 K's; and 1 walk. Winston-Salem @ Potomac (Game 1) They're picking up yesterday's suspended game in the 4th inning. Matt Long pitching today. AC threw 3 scoreless last night before the game was stopped. http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/st...wswafa_potafa_1 Warthogs ended up losing 7-1. Bahhh... Winston-Salem @ Potomac (Game 2) Jacob Rasner with the start. http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/st...wswafa_potafa_1 WS lost 4-1 despite a very strong start for Jacob Rasner. Rasner went 5 innings; 0 runs; only gave up 2 hits; struck out 6 and walked 2. Kannapolis @ West Virginia Socolovich is scheduled to pitch. http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/st...kanafx_wvaafx_1 Kanny lost 7-0. Crap, crap, and more crap.
  12. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jun 11, 2008 -> 12:43 PM) Have you learned anything about Mabee? His core numbers, his strikeouts, and his high GO/AO are all encouraging, but I don't know about his stuff. A preseason article by Scott Merkin said Mabee has one of the best curveballs in the system and is expected to be in Winston-Salem by year end.
  13. QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 10, 2008 -> 09:04 PM) Not really What are you basing that on?
  14. There are a lot of team who are only an injury away from needing an experienced MLB shortstop... and it's a long season. I wouldn't be in a hurry to dump Uribe.
  15. Charlotte @ Norfolk Haeger pitching http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/st...chraaa_noraaa_1 Charlotte won 5-2. Birmingham has the night off Winston-Salem @ Potomac Anthony Carter pitching http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/st...wswafa_potafa_1 (rained out -- the game will be played tomorrow instead) Kannapolis @ West Virginia Shirek pitching http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/st...kanafx_wvaafx_1 Kanny lost 7-6.

  17. QUOTE (JPN366 @ Jun 10, 2008 -> 12:39 PM) Clayton Richard is also being promoted to Charlotte, so that means Poreda will be taking his place in the Barons rotation. The moves should become official today or tomorrow. Great to hear about Richard. He's been very impressive this year. http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/st...&pid=453385
  18. What a great summary. It wasn't too long... not at all. Write more later if something comes to mind.
  19. Forget Owens. If we replace Uribe on the roster with someone from our system, it better be Getz. Chris Getz can play 2B, SS, or outfield including CF. He's left-handed and can lead off if we need him too. And Getz is batting .313 with a .837 OPS; he has 6 homeruns and 14 doubles. Owens is batting .250 with a .635 OPS; he has 1 homerun and 8 doubles. (They have almost the exact same number of at-bats - just over 200.)
  20. Barons win 4-3. David Cook drives home the winning run in the 10th.
  21. Tied 3-3 bottom of the 9th. The Baron's manager, pitching coach, and two players were ejected during the game so far. That ought to be interesting to hear about when JPN comes back from the game. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Edit: going to extra innings.
  22. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Jun 8, 2008 -> 08:21 PM) Why would an organization do that to themselves? Revenge.
  23. Barons up 2-0 after 3 innings. David Cook with both RBIs. Come on Barons!!!!
  24. I listened to all of Poreda's starts last year on radio... he was in the high 90's alot of the time. One thing that really struck me is how effective he was at throwing his fastball inside on people's hands. He broke alot of bats.
