  1. BTW - Charlie Haeger pitched another really nice game last night. Too bad it was on a night he had to be pitching against Chuck James. James would be a guy I'd love to see us pick up.
  2. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jun 16, 2008 -> 07:41 AM) Matt Inouye is on fire. Hitting .474 in his last 10 games, and now up to .353 on the season. He has a .918 OPS. He's been playing primarily catcher, but can also play multiple other positions. So don't be surprised it he's in W-S soon, especially since he's now 24 at Low A ball (he was drafted at age 22, so he started older). He must have been hurt earlier in the year, because he wasn't getting alot of playing time. He sure is making up for it now though. I agree with your thought about him getting promoted. The Sox thought highly enough of him to send him to winter ball after his great year at GF... so he must be on their radar screen. Now that he's proved he can smack low-A ball pitching around... move him up.
  3. My guess is that Owens would be called up, play CF, and move Swish to first. Although Owens' season average isn't great, he's been on a pretty good roll recently (over .300 for last 20 games). Then I would imagine the Sox would probably lead off with JO... move OC down to #2 and drop AJ down to 6 or 7. And on days that BA plays CF, OC will lead off, etc, just like they're doing now. (They're not going to bring up Fields to experiment with him at 1B.... extremely doubtful. They need him to work on not striking out and improving his 3B defense.)
  4. QUOTE (EvilJester99 @ Jun 15, 2008 -> 11:52 AM) Kong is a late scratch.... Well... there goes my theory. I pick him to have a big day - so, of course he's going to sit. I guess the fact that Konerko is knocking the snot out of the ball in day games at home is a great reason to rest him. Geezus. Let's play Uribe instead.
  5. I predict Paulie is going to have a good game today. He has a .838 OPS so far in home games this season. He has a .870 OPS in day games. He has a .800 OPS so far in the month of June. But he's only 1-7 in the Colorado series so far with a .393 OPS. He hasn't had a series at home this year where he's hit this poorly... and since he has hit well at home, during the day, and in June... I'm thinking the Law of Averages catches up today.
  6. Another find this morning... Chris Chron Jr., a 44th-round selection by the White Sox in the recent amateur baseball draft., plans to play baseball at the University of Utah. (Great Falls Tribune)
  7. In the Chicago Tribune this morning... Kenny Williams Jr., a switch-hitting sixth-round draft choice, agreed to terms and took batting practice at U.S. Cellular Field before Saturday's game against Colorado. He will report to the Great Falls (Mont.) Rookie League team on Monday,
  8. Kannapolis won 12-8. Jason Rice had a great outing as a starter: 6 innings; 0 runs; 1 hit; 7 K's, and 0 walks. Offensively, Kanny had 18 hits lead by catcher Matt Inouye who went 5-5 raising his BA to .338. He was a force for Great Falls last year. Nice to see him start coming around.
  9. Poreda was perfect through 4 innings. He gave up a run on 2 hits in the 5th. The only inning he struggled was the 6th. So... not a bad start. Didn't look great because of 1 bad inning at the end of his 6-inning outing. But before that it was very impressive.
  10. Update: Georgia upsets #1 ranked Miami... 7 to 4. Box Score Next, they'll play Stanford who upset Florida State earlier today.
  11. Also, I heard some people on the board say Beckham is small??? He's not small. He looks like a very muscular athletic type. And he has a very impressive swing. Now I understand where the power numbers come from. His power is no fluke.
  12. QUOTE (BearSox @ Jun 14, 2008 -> 08:08 PM) With him, Votto, and Bruce, the Reds potentially have a great lefty trio. Looks like they are going to move Votto to LF, if everything goes as planned, since Alonso can only play 1B (he is about as slow as you get though). I've heard people say Alonso is slow, so I expected him to be some big body Prince Fielder type. Not at all. He looks pretty athletic to me. I didn't see him run though. But I did see him trot.
  13. Georgia started the top of the 9th down 4-2, facing Miami's closer who is one of the best in the country (and who is the Twins first round draft pick). In fact, Miami, coming into this game, was 45-0 when leading entering the 9th inning with a lead. What happens? Georgia scores 5 runs to take a 7-4 lead. Game still in progress.
  14. Yonder Alonso just hit a home run in the bottom of the 7th to give Miami a 4-3 lead. That guy has a great looking swing. Looks like a pro hitter right now. Didn't realize that he also leads the entire country in walks with 76.
  15. A chance to see Gordon Beckham play in the CWS. Georgia: 41-23-1 Coach: David Perno (247-182,-1, 7th season) How they got here: After winning the SEC regular season crown, the Bulldogs dropped their first game of the Athens Regional to Lipscomb. They've been outstanding since that point. The Bulldogs defeated rival Georgia Tech twice to win the Athens Regional, and took two of three from N.C. State over the weekend to punch their ticket to Omaha. Key Players: The Bulldogs enter the CWS with a .309 team batting average and a 4.82 team ERA. Shortstop Gordon Beckham leads the team with a .401 batting average, 26 homers and 72 RBIs. First baseman Rich Poythress is hitting .370 with 15 homers and 67 RBIs, while veterans Bryce Massanari and Ryan Peisel each have double-digit home run totals. The Georgia pitching staff is led by starting pitcher Trevor Holder and Joshua Fields. Holder is 8-4 with a 4.34 ERA in 87 innings of work, while Fields is one of the nation's premier closers with 16 saves and a 2.76 ERA in 32 2/3 innings of work. CWS Synopsis: The Bulldogs played great baseball throughout the regular season, but failed to impress in the SEC Tournament. Since that point, Georgia has gotten back to business and is once again playing good baseball. Georgia plays with a lot of passion, and is incredibly tough to slow down when the offense is on a roll. Georgia's starting pitching likely will determine its fate in the College World Series. Miami: 52-9 Coach: Jim Morris (694-254-2, 15th season at Miami) How they got here: After winning the ACC regular season and tournament crowns, the Hurricanes entered the NCAA Tournament a confident club. The 'Canes have yet to disappoint. After winning the Coral Gables Regional with ease, the Hurricanes battled back from a Super Regional series opening loss to Arizona to advance to the College World Series. Key Players: Miami heads to Omaha with a .322 team batting average a 3.93 team ERA. The Hurricanes are led at the plate by junior first baseman Yonder Alonso, who's hitting .367 with 23 homers and 71 RBIs. Second baseman Jemile Weeks is hitting .367 with 11 homers and 59 RBIs, while outfielder Blake Tekotte and shortstop Ryan Jackson are each hitting over .350. The Hurricanes also have a very good pitching staff with freshman left-hander Chris Hernandez and relievers Kyle Bellamy and Carlos Gutierrez leading the charge. Hernandez is 11-0 with a 2.62 ERA in 106 1/3 innings, while Bellamy has a 1.97 ERA and Gutierrez has a 3.02 ERA and 13 saves. CWS Synopsis: Miami joins North Carolina as the most balanced teams in the College World Series. The Hurricanes love to put pressure on opposing defenses, while the pitching staff has been vastly underrated for much of the season. Because of their balance and ability to succeed in clutch situations, Miami is our pick to win the national title.

  17. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jun 14, 2008 -> 09:12 AM) Are they trying to convert Day to a starter? Could be just trying to give him more work to get him back on track.
  18. This from the Great Falls Tribune this morning... Newly signed pitchers Dan Hudson and Dexter Carter will be arriving in Great Falls any day now. Hudson was 5-6 with a 4.76 earned-run average this spring. The righthander led the Colonial Athletic Conference in strikeouts (107 in 92 innings). In three seasons, Hudson amassed 295 strikeouts in 292 innings, which ranks second all-time at ODU. The 6-3, 200-pounder was a second-team all-CAA choice this spring after making the first team a year ago. Carter, meanwhile, is a 6-6, 198-pounder who was 3-4 with an 8.76 ERA. In two years at Old Dominion Carter fanned 100 hitters in 107 innings. Manager Chris Cron said first baseman Doug Thennis of Texas Tech (27th round) is slated to join Voyagers soon. The veteran manager is also hopeful that Wichita State outfielder Ken Williams Jr., the son of the Chisox general manager, will soon sign and be dispatched to Great Falls. http://www.greatfallstribune.com/apps/pbcs...317/1006/SPORTS
  19. QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Jun 13, 2008 -> 09:44 PM) If the Sox continue to be in the race, they could see some big subtractions on the roster.... Who? I don't see anybody leaving Charlotte until September unless it's to cover an injury. Our major league roster is pretty stable at this point.
  20. QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 13, 2008 -> 07:08 PM) Cook is 2-2 so far tonight. Finished 3-4 with a double, an RBI, and even got a stolen base.
  21. Outstanding game for Jack Egbert tonight... 7 innings; 0 runs; 5 hits; 9 K's; 0 walks Charlotte may be very well positioned to make a run at the 2nd half title in the IL. With the hitting kicking in, adding Cook, Egbert back in form, plus Clayton Richard in the rotation... They are a MUCH improved team.
  22. The Charlotte lineup is starting to look dangerous. Guys who were supposed to be hitting are starting to hit. Add Cook. A recipe for runs.
  23. QUOTE (danman31 @ Jun 13, 2008 -> 05:12 PM) I saw 20th rounder Justin Greene on Bristol's roster. I also found an article about him that gives a bit of background on him. White Sox take FMU's Greene Good find. Thanks.
  24. If Cook plays in Charlotte anywhere close to the level he's been at the last 2 years, the Sox will find a place for him. Think about it... he has a career OPS of .919... a career OBP of .388... and this year his production has been nothing short of staggering. A .467 OBP?? 1.044 OPS?? Guys with his kind of offensive ability and power who can play CF don't come along every day. And he's younger than Jerry Owens. Who knows? He may just turn out to be a AAAA player. But if he continues to hit like he has been, I think he has a real shot to be in the mix with Anderson and Owens for a roster spot. It will be very interesting to see how he does in Charlotte, because this is probably his last shot with the Sox. He's Rule 5 eligible this fall. So his performance in the second half will likely determine if he stays or goes.
  25. http://chicago.whitesox.mlb.com/news/press...sp&c_id=cws Loiza officially placed on 15-day DL.
