  1. QUOTE (Cerbaho-WG @ Jun 6, 2008 -> 11:27 AM) Holy s*** Carter had an ERA of 8.7 this year. That's OK. His peripherals were good. 35K's vs. 33 BB's. 16 wild pitches. And 7 HBPs. To put his control in perspective, the guy with the next highest number of wild pitches on the team had 6.
  2. QUOTE (Jenks Heat @ Jun 6, 2008 -> 09:12 AM) If the guys they have drafted are all low money signable guys, why not take Danks and see if anything can be done. You know some team will. My thoughts exactly. What are they worried about doing? Wasting a draft pick? Like that would be a first...
  3. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jun 5, 2008 -> 09:57 PM) I'd be surprised if Cook doesn't end up in Charlotte this season, if not now, then soon. IMO... They have to promote Cook. The Sox have to decide whether to put him on the 40-man roster this fall or risk losing him in the Rule 5 Draft. I can't imagine they'd make a decision to put him on the 40-man without seeing how he looks against AAA pitching. Besides... he's crushing AA pitching. What's the point in leaving him there?
  4. KW Jr. gets drafted and Jordan Danks is still on the board. I am confused.
  5. Early in the games... Richard is looking very sharp. 4 K's in the first 2 innings. All the others are getting slapped around. You jinxed them NorthSide.
  6. QUOTE (BearSox @ Jun 5, 2008 -> 02:02 PM) Like I said, college stats should be taken with a grain of salt. I think Bill James would disagree with you on that point.
  7. QUOTE (Elgin Slim @ Jun 5, 2008 -> 01:20 PM) I am absolutely convinced that the Sox will take Castro. It just seems like their MO. If I read correctly, Regier is in charge of the draft this year after Wilder got fired. I am also convinced that he will be a bust, and we will complain about not being able to pick high again for a few years. Regier is not in charge of the draft. He got 'promoted' to a scout position to help him save face when he lost his responsibilities to Buddy Bell.
  8. I was reading the San Francisco papers online this morning... It appears the Giants first priority is a corner infielder with power - not a catcher. So... we'll see. Could be Smoak going to SF.
  9. A note about Wallace from the Arizona State website... Brett Wallace Named A Finalist For The Golden Spikes Award Wallace becomes 8th Sun Devil to be a finalist for most prestigious college baseball award June 3, 2008 TEMPE, Ariz. - Arizona State junior third baseman and two-time Pac-10 Player of the Year Brett Wallace has been named a finalist for the Golden Spikes Award, given to the nation's premier amateur baseball player. Wallace becomes the 8th Sun Devil be names a Golden Spikes Award finalist and the first since Dustin Pedroia in 2004. Wallace (Sonoma, Calif.) was named the Pac-10 Player of the Year for the second straight after leading the Pac-10 in six categories, including batting average (.414), hits (94), runs (83), RBI (81), total bases (173) and home runs (21). Wallace was a semifinalist for the Golden Spikes Award last season. (In 2007, he batted .423, with a .500 OBP, and a .719 SLG -- a 1.219 OPS. And that was over a full college season. Pretty impressive.)
  10. BA's new mock draft is predicting that we select Alonso... with Skipworth and Crow still on the board.
  11. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jun 5, 2008 -> 06:26 AM) Shirek: 2 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 3 K (why is Charlie making a relief appearance?) They've been resting him due to arm fatigue. This was his first appearance in two weeks. Probably just wanted him to get a little live work before returning him to the rotation.
  12. QUOTE (Cerbaho-WG @ Jun 5, 2008 -> 09:49 AM) I believe 2 PM EST. Yes. The pre-shows start at noon EST. The draft is at 2. The chips are starting to fall into place. With the Rays taking Beckham the next big pick affecting us is Kansas City. The Kansas City Star suggests that if Tim Beckham and Pedro Alvarez are off the board, then Kansas City is leaning toward Eric Hosmer. However, concerns about signability may push them to select Posey or Matusz. Here's a quote from an article this morning. "Hosmer has indicated he wants a signing bonus of approximately $7 million to forego college. That would shatter the club record of $4 million given last year to Moustakas and in 2005 to Alex Gordon. Moustakas and Gordon were the second overall picks in their draft classes. Hochevar got a $3.5 million signing bonus as the first overall pick in 2006, but that was part of a four-year deal for a guaranteed $5.3 million and included escalators capable of boosting its total value to $7 million. The debate for the Royals in the remaining hours might be this simple: Is Hosmer worth the headache of another battle with Boras?"
  13. QUOTE (DBAH0 @ Jun 5, 2008 -> 10:05 AM) So is the ideal scenario for everyone basically this; Hosmer and Alvarez go in the top 4. Marlins don't pick Skipworth. Giants take Posey if he falls to #5, with the Rays picking Tim Beckham. Reds take Gordon Beckham at #7. Leaving us with a choice b/w hopefully Skipworth, Smoak and Crow? That would be like Christmas to me. I'd be very happy with any of those three. But if I was pulling the trigger, it would be Smoak.
  14. QUOTE (Palehosefan @ Jun 4, 2008 -> 08:01 PM) I would officially shoot myself in the head. #8 pick in the draft and a chance to draft an elite talent and we make a big reach for Donny Lucy(err Jason Castro) again? Ditto. Making a mistake like that in the second round is bad enough. As a high first round pick it would qualify as a disaster.
  15. Looks like DeWayne Wise cleared waivers. He's in the lineup for Charlotte tonight. And something else... I'm beginning to believe that Charlie Haeger should only pitch after the weather warms up. Seems like as soon it does, his knuckleball starts working. Until then, he's worthless. Afterwards, he looks like a real pitcher.
  16. I think if either Crow or Posey were to drop to us, we'd have to take them. Smoak would be next on my want list... Beyond that, flip a coin between Alonso, GBeckham, and Wallace IMO. My only concern about Beckham are the reports that suggest he'll eventually end up as a 2B rather than a SS. If that's the case, I'd rather use the pick on a powerhitting 1B.
  17. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jun 4, 2008 -> 12:28 PM) The Giants are very interested in Smoak, but they might also consider Pedro Alvarez if he falls (in fact I'd be shocked if they didn't). I read an article that said Alvarez is the Pirates' 1st, 2nd, and 3rd choice, and ownership has already expressed a willingness to cough up the money for him. So the odds of him falling to the Giants seems slim.
  18. Poreda got touched up for 3 runs in the first inning. Ouch.
  19. Kannapolis lost 11-5 this afternoon. Juan Moreno has had a couple of rough outings since coming off the DL, but I'm guessing he'll come around soon. He was so good last year and had such great control (77K's and 11 BB's). Jimmy Gallagher and Christian Marrero had nice games today. Gallagher was 4-5 and Marrero was 3-5. I hope it's the start of a trend. Both have struggled so far this year, but they were the core (along with Retherford and Salvadore Sanchez) of a Great Falls great offensive team last year.
  20. Pawtucket @ Charlotte Ohka pitching http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/st...pawaaa_chraaa_1 Birmingham @ Mississippi O'Malley pitching http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/st...biraax_msbaax_1 Winston-Salem @ Myrtle Beach Poreda pitching http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/st...wswafa_myrafa_1 Greensboro @ Kannapolis Moreno pitching http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/st...gboafx_kanafx_1
  21. Victor Mercedes has hit in 10 straight games... during which he is 20 for 45 (.444 BA). Nice little streak, eh?
  22. QUOTE (BearSox @ Jun 2, 2008 -> 02:21 PM) Best case scenario with him is a very, very, extremely poor man's Brandon Inge, IMO. However, I'd gladly take someone on our bench who can hit w/ a little pop and play all over the field with decent D. What crystal ball did you look in to dig up that comparison? Brandon Inge has never hit squat at any level he's ever played at. Inge is Juan Uribe as a third baseman... good glove... a little pop in his bat... can't get on base to save his life. Meanwhile, Retherford has more homeruns in less than a half season this year than Inge had in any full-season in the minors.
  23. CJ Retherford is hitting .371 (13 for 35) over his last 10 games... including getting hits in 9 of those 10 games. His 13 hits include 2 doubles and 5 homeruns.
  24. Brad Eldred has 19 homeruns in 55 games. Since the chances of him getting called up are relatively small, it's going to be interesting to see how many HRs he puts up in Charlotte this year.
  25. QUOTE (Frankensteiner @ Jun 1, 2008 -> 04:09 PM) So who's the idiot who traded for Swisher and OC? I don't really get your attitude. As part of your strange anti-Ozzie crusade, you seem more happy that Ozzie has some harsh comments thrown his way than to hear the Sox might actually do something to improve thier s***ty hitting. I guess whatever floats your boat. Those comments are pretty much KW deflecting blame for getting a couple duds and letting his roster get old. Oh well. I guess it's Ozzie's fault. I've always wanted to see how the "ignore" feature works. Thanks for giving me a reason to try it.
