Fields back in the lineup for Charlotte tonight. Didn't do anything (0-4), but good to see him healthy enough to play.

Poreda named Pitcher of the Week in Carolina League
scenario replied to scenario's topic in FutureSox Board
QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ May 22, 2008 -> 04:40 PM) 2010. I imagine he starts in AAA next year, with some short september call up, then getting a look at an actual roster spot in 2010. Agreed. Faster than that is pretty improbable. And it's fairly likely that we don't see him til 2011. That would mean he spends a full year at AA and AAA, and join the team as a 24-year old rookie in spring 2011. -
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ May 22, 2008 -> 06:44 AM) Kanny lost game 1 of a DH with Delmarva, 3-1. Details... Morales: 2-3 (.240) Persichina: 2-3, 2B, RBI (.225) Jones (L, 1-5): 6 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 9 K (ERA 7.54) Pretty decent start for Jones. I love to see the high K's and low BB's. Too bad he didn't get better run support.

QUOTE (LVSoxFan @ May 21, 2008 -> 02:56 PM) Not trying to be negative; just taking a wait-and-see attitude. Not trying to be negative... but doing a mighty fine job of it.

Seems like alot of movement going on right now. Lyndon Estill just joined Kannapolis. I think he was in extended spring training down in Arizona. A couple of pitchers just showed up on the Kanny roster too... and I can't find Charlie Shirek's name anywhere. I wonder what's going on there.

5/20 gamethread: Indians vs Sox; CSN; 7:11

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 20, 2008 -> 12:40 PM) That said, I think Sabathia mops the floor with us tonight. He has been out of his mind lately. Fortunately, Cleveland is hitting right now kind of like we were during the Toronto road trip. -
QUOTE (southsideirish71 @ May 19, 2008 -> 10:51 PM) Here is a 33 year old guy who has a sub 90 mph fastball and gets through the minors with guile and pitches to contact. And doesn't project for summer success at the Cell. I'm sure you're right. It just seems unusual to me that a guy with his kind of success in the minors wasn't given more of a chance than just 7 innings in the big leagues. When Bajenaru got a shot at MLB, he was bad (11.20 ERA) Childers struck out 5 guys in his 7-inning cup of major league coffee and had a 4.70 ERA. Sounds like a guy who was in serious need of a better agent to me.

http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/news/ar...b&fext=.jsp Carolina League - Brandon Allen, Winston-Salem .423 (11-26), 7 R, 5 2B, 1 3B, 1 HR, 7 RBI, 2 BB, 2 SO, 2 SB, .808 SLG Allen was already having a big week and a bigger game when he came to the plate in the bottom of the ninth Wednesday against Lynchburg. The first baseman was 4-for-4 with a homer and two doubles, lacking only the elusive triple for a cycle. Allen then ripped a changeup into the right-center field gap and legged out his second three-bagger of the season to complete the rare hitting feat in a 12-11 loss. It wasn't the only damage Allen did in the series against Lynchburg, as he had nine hits in the first three games to go along with six RBIs. The lefty's monster game, though, was emblematic of his versatility at the plate, as he leads the league in extra-base hits.

http://www.minorleaguebaseball.com/news/ar...b&fext=.jsp Carolina League - Aaron Poreda, Winston-Salem 2-0, 0.69 ERA, 2 G, 2 GS, 13.0 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 4 BB, 7 SO Poreda was flat-out dealing in wins over Lynchburg and Kinston last week. The 2007 first-round Draft pick shut out the Hillcats over six innings, allowing just three hits while striking out five in a 4-2 win. He nearly matched that effort Saturday against the Indians, giving up three runs -- one earned -- and four hits while striking out two in seven innings. Poreda has now won his last four starts for the Warthogs and lowered his ERA to a paltry 2.19 on the season.

Anyone know anything about Jason Childers? http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/C/J...-Childers.shtml Sort of surprising to me that he hasn't seen more major league time with the minor league success he's had. 3.05 minor league ERA; over 8 K/9; right around 3.0 BB/9. Yet here he is at 33 years old and only had 7 innings in the majors? One of the reasons I'm asking is that he's doing very well in Charlotte... 0.98 ERA; 18K's, 4 BBs in 18 innings pitched. A .100 BAA with almost a 2:1 GO/AO Is it possible he might get called up if we need a reliever?

QUOTE (fathom @ May 18, 2008 -> 09:34 PM) So the scouting report I heard on Eldred yesterday was that when he faced a crappy pitcher who was throwing 82 mph, he hit a mammoth homer. When he faced the hard throwing Balfour, he was K'd easily. He strikes out ALOT. But this year, he is hitting well too... and not just against meatball pitchers. If you have > 1.000 OPS after 150 at-bats, it generally means you're hitting everyone pretty well.

Remember how people screamed when the Sox decided to bring Masset north from spring training and send Wasserman to Charlotte?
-
I'd love to see Lance get a spot start. He last pitched on the 15th, so it works from a timing perspective. Give Lance a start and have Masset loosened up just in case. Let Jose skip a turn and rest his back. That's what I say.

QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ May 17, 2008 -> 06:49 PM) Rookie question, but what does GO/AO mean? I figured GO was groundout, but what is AO, Airout? If so, why wouldn't it be GO/FO? It is the ratio of groundouts to flyouts. Don't know why they use 'A' instead of 'F'.

Zito is 0-5 with a 6.67 ERA in his last five interleague starts. Buehrle is 10-2 with a 3.85 ERA in his last 16 interleague starts. Let's hope they hold true to form.

Has Floyd been sacrificing velocity for movement?
scenario replied to Jack Parkman's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Saw these notes in the Trib today... Friday marked the fourth time this season RHP Gavin Floyd has not allowed an earned run. He has gone at least six innings in all of his outings this year, including Friday's win over San Francisco. Floyd has held opponents to a .193 average (33-for-171). He could end up being Coop's most impressive reclamation project. -
Levi Maxwell getting his first start at W-S after his recent promotion. Should be interesting to see how he does.
-
QUOTE (Reddy @ May 17, 2008 -> 08:24 AM) and i can't get over how seriously silly his mugshot is. I think they ought to use the 70's night picture of him they put up at the Angels game.

Kyle McCulloch with another very nice outing... 6 innings, 0 runs, 1 hit, 1 K, and 1 BB. Then Joe Winkelsas came in and 1-upped MacDougal... 2/3 of an inning, 5 earned runs. Birmingham loses 6-4. David Cook remains hot. 1-2 hitting with a sac fly and a walk. The hit was a homerun. BA is now .302. His OPS is 1.059. Look at his last 10 games: .483 BA (14 for 29); 4 doubles; 1 triple; 5 homeruns; (10 extra base hits out of 14 hits?); walked 10 times; only 4 K's.
-
Whisler pitched a very nice game... 6 innings, 3 hits, 1 earned run, 4 K's, and 2 BBs. Ray King came in and threw a very nice inning of relief (retired the side 1-2-3 with 2K's). But.... then came MacDougal... bringing his implosion act to Charlotte. 1 inning, 2 hits, 2 walks, 3 earned runs, blown save, and a loss. Somewhere along the line this guy's confidence snapped and he is rapidly approaching useless. Sad to watch.

QUOTE (Ozzie Ball @ May 17, 2008 -> 04:11 AM) Well let's not go that far, he's getting hits but not displaying any power, OPS on the year is at .741. In the last 10 games, he has 16 hits in 38 at-bats with 2 doubles, 2 homeruns, and 10 RBIs. He hit safely in 8 of the 10 games. 6 of them were multi-hit games. That's a nice stretch, especially for a 19-year old playing in A-ball. Thought it was worth pointing out, since he is one of the most highly thought of prospects in our system. Plus, remember he is 19 years old, 6'5" and only 170 pounds. He's going to grow into more power as his body fills out.
-
Jose Martinez has been playing VERY well for Kanny. .421 BA in his last 10 games. Over .300 for the season as of tonights game.

QUOTE (lostfan @ May 16, 2008 -> 07:54 PM) I was just saying don't get too excited about Getz's stats after a month of AAA ball. I looked deeper and he's never sustained anything like this for that long at the lower levels. He's about an average prospect. Dig deeper. The scouting report on him is better than that. When he was drafted, he was considered one of the best hitting infielders in the draft. http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/G/Chris-Getz.shtml That year he moved from college ball to rookie ball to A-ball. In his first full minor league season he was in AA. That is the only year he has 'struggled', which is not a surprise for a player promoted that quickly. In his minor league career, he's averaged a .299 BA, and now he's batting .300. So, the small sample size of this year is irrelevant. He can hit.
-
Whisler is really surprising me. He's starting to look like a pitcher.

QUOTE (lostfan @ May 16, 2008 -> 07:38 PM) Sample size... get too excited and jump to the conclusion that Getz is better than Richar and is going to jump into MLB and lead off. I mean when Richar went to Charlotte last year, in about the same number of games he hit .346 with a .956 OPS. Then he had 200 PA's in the majors and did just about the same thing that mostly everyone who has ever been called up to MLB did except a few, and a bunch of people were ready to declare he sucked, but that's another story. You're jumping to conclusions about what I meant. I wasn't taking a shot at Richar. The fact is he can't help us until he is healthy and he's not going to see game action until almost June 1st. All I meant to do was point out that Owens, after 124 at-bats is hitting squat and probably not going to be the boost to our offense that some people hope he would be. Meanwhile, we have a 2B with a career minor league average of .300 (Getz) and just happens to be hitting .300 again this year in AAA. So... who helps us more right now? Another outfielder who can't hit or a 2B who looks like he can.
