  1. QUOTE (BearSox @ Jun 22, 2008 -> 09:19 PM) wasn't he that super prospect according to bureau? Yep. Mr. B said Gerst was the next Jacoby Ellsbury.
  2. Kent Gerst seems to have found a power stroke. Homeruns on back-to-back nights? And Matt Inouye is just HOT. Batting .472 in his last 10 games? Now batting .346 with a .415 OBP since activated 24 games ago. Bucking for a promotion to W-S? The Warthogs 3 catchers are averaging about .200 each.
  3. QUOTE (SoxFan101 @ Jun 22, 2008 -> 09:04 PM) so unless you have actually seen the kid hold back on your generalizations. Wise words... It seems alot people believe 'unless you've actually seen the kid automatically add 2-4 years to his age'.
  4. The hairiest 16 year old in the world... that's not an image I want stuck in my brain BearSox. Sure there are exceptions. But think about it... People you know who are seniors in high school... People you know who are seniors in college... Can you generally tell the difference? It's not just 'look'. Those 4 years (17-21) usually result in some significant and obvious differences that are not hard for people to pick up on.
  5. QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Jun 22, 2008 -> 10:49 AM) I don't know about that. If people would guess Alexei's age, there would be a wide range of guesses prolly from 20-30 and he's 26 (supposed to be at least). A lot of these Dominican players look real young, which is why people can lie about their ages so easily. Hellooooooo..... The reason people in their 20's are easy to mistake is that most people quit growing by age 21. So an extra year or two in your 20's doesn't make alot of difference in development or how someone looks. But teenagers versus a 21-year old is usually pretty obvious.
  6. I think most people with a pulse can tell the difference between a 17 year old and a 21 year old.
  7. Another note to help lighten things up... Juan "the real deal" Silverio had 7 RBIs tonight in a 10-4 Bristol win. Throught the first 5 games this year, he's 8 for 21 (.381) with 2 doubles and 2 homeruns.
  8. Bristol won 10-4 over Burlington Juan ("The Real Deal") Silverio with 7 RBI's on 3 hits including a grand slam. He's 8-21 (.381) in his first 5 games. Welcome to the organization Mr. Silverio 20th round pick CF Justin Greene continues to impress. 3-4 tonight. 8-14 on the season. 6 of his hits are for extra bases. Very nice start for 6'10" lefthander Garrett Johnson: 5 1/3 innings; 1 run on 6 hits; 7 K's; and 0 walks. Winston-Salem over Wilmington 10-8. A decent start for Anthony Carter: 6 innings; 2 runs on 5 hits Paulo Orlando went 5-5 The first six hitters in the lineup went 14 for 25. John Shelby with 4 RBIs. Kannapolis beat West Virginia 14-3. Interesting offensive line: 14 runs on 16 hits. Get this... 1 double; 1 homerun; and 14 singles Jason Rice pitched a nice game: 6 innings; 2 runs on 7 hits; 3 K's and 1 BB. Jim Gallagher with 4 hits. Five other players with 2 hits each. Charlotte lost to Lehigh Valley 3-2. Loiza pitched 3 decent innings in his second 'rehab' start. Haeger pitched beautifully in 6 innings of relief. Offense couldn't scare up enough runs to pull it out. Sound familiar? Chris Getz got 3 hits. Eldred and Cook hit solo homeruns. The team got 9 hits but could only score 2 runs?? Again... sounds familiar. Birmingham beat Jacksonville 2-0. Carlos Torres pitched a very nice game... 8 innings; 0 runs; 6 hits; 5 K's; 3 BB's. Jon Link got his 19th save and lowered his ERA to 1.55. Not much offense but they didn't need it. Great Falls beats Billings 4-3. Kent Gerst with a solo homer a double and 2 RBIs. Brent Morel goes 2-3 with a triple, a walk, and an RBI. Eduardo Escobar 4-5 with a double. Nice night! Daniel Hudson pitched 3 innings of 1-hit shutout ball; 4 K's; 0 BBs Dexter Carter pitched 2 innings; gave up 1 run on 4 hits; struck out 3; and walked 1. Gerst's double was a walk-off in the bottom of the 10th for the win.
  9. Well... tonight's AZ-MN game has Brandon Webb going against Livan Hernandez. If Minnesota wins this game, then you know the baseball gods are messing with us.
  10. QUOTE (BearSox @ Jun 21, 2008 -> 01:21 PM) If I was in the same exact shoes as Long is, I'd still sign out of High School. I love playing the game of baseball, but I really dislike school. What?? You think a scholarship athlete actually has to attend class? This isn't Notre Dame we're talking about. No offense chimpy.
  11. QUOTE (BearSox @ Jun 21, 2008 -> 01:52 PM) I take it he won't be signing. Think about it... Sign as a 20-something round draft pick or spend a year (or two) on scholarship to Florida State and hope you go higher. On top of that... assume you have rich parents. Minor league buses in the Carolinas... or suntanned sorority girls and the chance to be a stud-athlete on campus? Tough decision for an 18 year old?
  12. Charlotte won 8-2. Nice job by Whisler. 6 innings; 2 runs on 7 hits; 2 K's and 0 walks. His record improves to 8-3. His ERA drops to 3.10. Somebody woke Jason Bourgeois UP. He went 3-5 tonight. He's batting .432 in the last 10 games and has raised his season average to .275.
  13. Lehigh Valley @ Charlotte Whisler pitching Eldred hit his 25th homerun in the 3rd inning. Jacksonville @ Birmingham Poreda pitching Potomac @ Winston-Salem Zaleski starting Tied 2-2 in the 5th. West Virginia @ Kannapolis Socolovich with the start Kanny up 4-2 in the 4th. Gallagher with a 3-run homerun. Billings @ Great Falls Cody Allen with the start (2007 - Converted to a pitcher and went 0-1 with a 2.89 ERA with 12 strikeouts in 9 1/3 innings for the Gulf Coast League Marlins...allowed one home run in his Minor League debut as a pitcher on July 1.) Bristol @ Burlington Po Yu Lin pitching Bristol bringing the lumber tonight. Up 7-2 in the 4th.
  14. QUOTE (JPN366 @ Jun 19, 2008 -> 10:40 PM) About tonights Barons game, I call that a punch to the gut game. Why? Because the Barons were down but chipping away. Micah Schnurstein, who's been struggling this year and is hitting under .200, blasts a three run homer to left to make it a one run game. But no...the f---ing umpires gather together and decide it wasn't a homer. The homeplate ump called it a homerun originally, but allows himself to be overruled by the the 1st base ump. Let that sink in a bit...homerun to left, homeplate ump calls it so, 1ST BASE UMP OVERRULES! Carlos Subero got tossed for arguing. Schnurstein proceeded to strike out. He said something to the umpire and he got tossed. Now, it was Thirsty Thursday, so the crowd got real ugly after that. Then the Barons lost. Like I said, a punch to the gut game. Don't the umps know they should never incite the crowd on Thirsty Thursday? LOL. That's got Nickel Beer Night type disaster written all over it.
  15. I don't think there's any question that Mariotti is a sick individual. Nobody goes around spewing as much hatred as he does without having serious personal problems.
  16. Great Falls won 6-5 to sweep the Helena Brewers... on the road. Nevin Griffith had a nice start: 5 innings; 2 runs (0 earned); on 4 hits; 4 K's; and no walks. Drew O'Neil got a rough introduction to pro ball: 1 1/3 innings; gave up 3 runs, all earned on 4 hits + a walk. Joshua Billeaud with the win in 2 innings of scoreless, hitless relief. Offensive stars of the game? Nick Mahin with two hits including a 2-run homerun. And KW Jr. who went 2-3 including a double, walked once, and scored 2 runs.
  17. Charlotte lost 8-2. Yikes. Not a good game for Egbert or anyone else for that matter. Birmingham lost 7-3. Dewon Day is looking lost. Gave up 4 runs on 2 hits in two innings... because he walked 5 guys. Sort of sad for a guy with such a good arm. Ryan O'Malley was no better in relief. On the bright side, Miguel Negron went 2-4 with a homerun and 2 RBIs. And Gartrell got two hits. Winston-Salem won 4-2. Nice relief job by Jacob Rasner who lowered his season ERA to 3.06. Another save for Texeira, who was just picked for the Carolina League all-star team. CJ Retherford with 2 hits, including a double and an RBI. CJ Lang also with 2 hits and an RBI. Good night for guys named CJ, I guess. LOL. Kanny lost 10-2. Bad night for Levi Maxwell who has otherwise been very good this year. Miranda went 3-3. Jim Gallagher and Logan Johnson each got 2 hits. Gallagher is up to .251 now after a very rough start. He hit .332 with a .953 OPS for GF last year. It would be really nice to see him get it going. (Baseball America named Gallagher the best pure hitter and fastest baserunner out of our 2007 draft class.) Bristol lost 4-3 in 10 innings. Their 2nd extra inning game out of 3 games this week. New Bristol CF and 2008 draftee Justin Greene went 3-4 with a homerun and a double. He's 4-6 in his two games since joining the team. The GF game is still going on...
  18. QUOTE (chimpy2121 @ Jun 19, 2008 -> 06:28 PM) Anyone know if Strauss will be a SP or LR in Great Falls? I've looked, but can't find anything. Edit: Sorry, didn't mean to post that in this thread. I did see how GF has no pitching match-up for tonight though. Double edit: I don't even see him on the roster their anymore. He was yesterday with no number. Good catch chimpy. Not sure what happened. There has been a little bit of roster juggling going on this week. I would guess that Strauss will either show up on Kanny's roster or reappear in GF pretty soon. Whether he is a starter or reliever... I would guess (just my opinion) that the Sox will make him a starter to give him more innings and accelerate his development. He could still turn out to be a reliever later.
  19. I don't think it's anything to get really excited about but Miguel Negron has had a nice run lately (batting .400 in his last 10 games). Brings his season average up to .291 (.364 OBP). Thought it was worth noting since he's a former 1st round draft pick*, plays CF, and leads off. On the season he's struck out 27 times and walked 26. Pretty good eye it looks like. *(He was the 18th overall pick of the 2000 draft by the Blue Jays.)
  20. Winston Salem Transactions 06/18/08 Francisco Hernandez activated from temporary inactive list 06/17/08 Lee Cruz reassigned to Class A Kannapolis 06/17/08 Anderson Gomes reassigned to Class A Kannapolis 06/17/08 Brett Bonvechio signed as a free agent 06/17/08 Estee Harris signed as a free agent
  21. Kanekoa Texiera Added to the Carolina League All-Star Team 6/18/2008 http://www.warthogs.com/content/press_box/index.htm WINSTON-SALEM, NC – It took a dramatic pause, but Kanekoa Texeira is going to Myrtle Beach, S.C. as part of the Carolina League All-Star team. Texeira, who resides in Maui, Hawaii, will be spending the All-Star break on different sands when the Carolina and California Leagues square off at BB&T Coastal Field on June 23-25. Texeira, who was drafted by the Chicago White Sox in the 22nd round of the 2006 draft, was the anchor of the Winston-Salem bullpen in the first half of the season, going 2-0 with a 1.44 ERA and 12 saves in 23 relief appearances. Opponents have hit just .216 against the burly right-hander. He joins Warthogs first baseman Brandon Allen as Winston-Salem representatives for the 2008 Carolina League All-Star team. Texeira, Allen and all the Carolina League’s best will face off versus the California League All-Stars in Myrtle Beach, S.C. on Tuesday, June 24 at 7:30 p.m., gates open at 5 p.m. For tickets, call 843-918-6000.
  22. New names in the Winston-Salem lineup tonight... Estee Harris - CF Brett Bonvechio - DH I don't know anything about either of them, but based on the little I could find, doesn't appear anything to get excited about. Both were signed as free agents after Lee Cruz and Anderson Gomes were demoted to Kanny.
  23. Lehigh Valley @ Charlotte Egbert pitching Egbert has had a little trouble getting back on track after his DL stint. Jacksonville @ Birmingham Day getting the start Potomac @ Winston-Salem Santeliz pitching Some new names in the Warthog lineup tonight... hmmm... West Virginia @ Kannapolis Levi Maxwell with the start Looks like Lee Cruz has been demoted back to Kanny Great Falls @ Helena Nevin Griffith with the start!!! Johnson City @ Bristol Joucer Martinez pitching
  24. QUOTE (JPN366 @ Jun 19, 2008 -> 01:18 PM) I beg to differ...Onarkys Paniagua and Joucer Martinez. Yeah, Onarkys Paniagua probably has him beat. LOL. And any baseball player named Juicer ought to consider a name change to avoid suspicion, don't you think?
  25. QUOTE (quickman @ Jun 19, 2008 -> 12:12 PM) What was the tigers and the indians winning percentage the last two seasons? In 2007, Cleveland has a .593 winning percentage for the season. In 2006, a .481 winning percentage. In 2007, the Tigers had a .543 winning percentage. In 2006, a .586 winning percentage. 2007 Standings http://chicago.whitesox.mlb.com/mlb/standi...sp?ymd=20071005 2006 Standings http://chicago.whitesox.mlb.com/mlb/standi...sp?ymd=20061001 One of the things I like about this database is that you can look at the records and standings on any date.
