Just a quick calculation and thought... If the Sox continue to win at their current rate (.563), they will finish the season with 91 wins. For the Tribe to reach 91 wins, they will have to win 58 out of their remaining 90 games (.644 winning percentage). For the Tigers to reach 91 wins, they will have to win 57 out of their remaining 90 games (.633 winning percentage). And for the Twins to reach 91 wins, they will have to win 55 out of their remaining 90 games (.611 winning percentage). Their winning percentages over their first 72 games: Tribe - .458 Tigers - .472 Twins - .500 (I didn't include the Royals above for a fairly obvious reason. They suck. They would have to win 61 out of their remaining 90 games... a .677 winning percentage. They had a .417 winning percentage in their first 72 games.)

QUOTE (BearSox @ Jun 18, 2008 -> 09:50 PM) The Great One, aka Ken Williams Jr., started in center today and is so far 1-4 with a triple and an rbi. He also has a walk and a K. In the first game, he pinch hit late in the game, drew a walk and scored a run. It was his only plate appearance.

QUOTE (Ozzie Ball @ Jun 19, 2008 -> 05:37 AM) Murillo Gouvea, who got the win for Bristol may be one to watch. Murillo Gouvea... I think he's my 2008 nominee for best name in the minor league system.

A good article about Richard and last night's game from milb.com today... http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/news/ar...sp&sid=l117
-
In Richard's two AAA starts... 14 innings; 3 runs; 7 hits; 12 K's; and 0 walks... for a 1.97 ERA and 0.50 WHIP. Last night he averaged throwing less than 10 pitches per inning... and averaged around 7 strikes and 3 balls per inning. Two of the three hits he gave up came in the 7th inning. Before that, he completely dominated them. He was perfect going into the 5th inning. What I like about this (his development) is that it gives us starting pitching depth. I'm more than a little concerned about Danks' (and Floyd's) ability to go deep into the season inning-wise. Danks pitched 139 innings last year. To avoid the risk of injury, he probably shouldn't exceed 170 this year. That could leave us hanging without a lefty late in the season... and playoffs. So, IMO, we don't trade Richard. We hope he continues to do well, and call him up late in the year to spot start and help extend Danks' season.

QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Jun 17, 2008 -> 06:42 PM) BTW, super prospect (or not pending I guess) Juan Silveiro starting at SS for Bristol. 0-1 with an RBI so far. Finished the night 2-4 with 3 RBIs. http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/st...jcyrok_brirok_1

6/17 Game Thread: PIT @ CWS, 7:11pm CT

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 17, 2008 -> 04:55 PM) Snell's a RHP Well... that simplifies things doesn't it? LOL. Good catch. -
The Charlotte game just ended. They won 5-1. Richard got nicked for a run on back-to-back doubles in the 7th before closing it out. Charlotte finishes off a 12-game road trip going 8-4 with 3 shutouts. Pretty nice!

Three more draftees are showing up on the Great Falls roster... Ryan Strauss Steven Sauer Joshua Billeaud
-
Clayton Richard perfect through 4-innings. Edit: He gives up his 1st hit in the bottom of the 5th... a single. But no more damage. End of 5 innings: Charlotte up 4-0. So far Richard has thrown 56 pitches... 40 strikes; 16 balls.

6/17 Game Thread: PIT @ CWS, 7:11pm CT
scenario replied to NorthSideSox72's topic in 2008 Season in Review
It's not unusual they're starting Wise. This year he's hitting .298 against lefties. And Snell seems to have more control problems when he faces left-handed hitters. (26 walks and 25 K's vs. lefties; 13 walks and 37 K's vs. righties.) -
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jun 17, 2008 -> 03:38 PM) So through his first 7 games, he's hitting .480 with a 1.256 OPS. Seven singles, three doubles and a triple - so he's not trying to hit for the fences either. Cripes. Very small sample size though. He obviously won't hit like that forever. Yeah, but it sure is fun while it lasts. The ball has to look like a beachball to him right now. Gotta ride that streak as long as you can. He went on a real hot streak like this last year right after he got promoted to Birmingham from Winston-Salem, too.

Just wanted to point out that in Charlotte's double-header this afternoon... David Cook went 4-4 in the first game with a triple. And he hit a double in his first at-bat of the 2nd game. So... in the 25 at-bats he's had since being promoted to Charlotte, he has 12 hits.
-
David Cook doubled in his 1st at-bat of the 2nd game. Now 5-5 on the day. Game Day
-
Looks like Charlotte is playing a double-header today. Clayton Richard is scheduled to start the 2nd game. Box Score I'm interested in seeing how Richard pitches in the 1st inning. It's been his Achilles Heel all year. His season ERA is in the mid-2's but his 1st inning ERA is in the mid-5's. Once he gets past the 1st, he's been dealing. Edit: 1-2-3, 9-pitch 1st inning for Richard. 7 strikes and 2 balls. Very nice.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jun 17, 2008 -> 10:36 AM) Skogley? He's on the Kannapolis roster, according to MiLB.com. Interesting - I guess he's been demoted back to GF then. There are a few guys who were targeted for Great Falls that got sent to Kanny for a little A-ball experience first... Skogley, Estill, Danny Jordan and probably a couple of others.

QUOTE (TCQ @ Jun 16, 2008 -> 07:02 PM) So we only have eight people signed?: I was reading this thing today that the Brewers have 20 of their picks signed. As of this morning, it looks like we have at least 17 picks signed. And Great Falls roster isn't posted yet.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 16, 2008 -> 08:07 PM) Fields, Cook, and Eldred are all the same all or nothing plodders that we have a line up full of already. Give me someone who will swing for a basehit with two strikes, or punch the outside pitch the other way, just to change the look of the line up a bit. Where did you get the impression that Cook is a plodder?

QUOTE (TCQ @ Jun 16, 2008 -> 07:02 PM) So we only have eight people signed?: I was reading this thing today that the Brewers have 20 of their picks signed. I'm sure we have more than that. It's just that the Chicago media does a pathetic job of covering our minor league teams.
-
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jun 16, 2008 -> 06:08 PM) BTW, one of our minor league local posters is saying that Fields is now on the DL. I don't have any further info. He's had problems with one of his knees ever since that hard slide / collision he had earlier this year.

Why in the world would we want Willy Taveras? I don't even like Jerry Owens and I'd rather have Owens than Taveras. Looking at Owens splits is interesting...http://www.minorleaguesplits.com/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?pl=435539 He had a good April He had a very bad May And he's having a very good June Taveras' splits on the other hand suggest that he has been consistently bad. http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/7269/s...hHFamV_bGGFCLcF

QUOTE (Heads22 @ Jun 16, 2008 -> 02:49 PM) If we wanted a CF, why would we call up Owens? Because he's hitting .345 with a .393 OBP in June.
-
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jun 16, 2008 -> 02:24 PM) Sorry, I must clarify, hitters that could start at the major league level. Getz doesnt play CF, Wise shouldnt start and Cook just got moved up to AAA. Getz can play CF. He's played it before and definitely has the speed for it. That said, I expect if the Sox want a CF, they'll bring up Owens. For those worried about bringing up Owens... Consider the alternative... Ozzie might decide to put Alexei in center and Uribe back at 2B. I say get Jerry up here quick before he has too much time to think about it.
-
My answer this week would be Owens. He's hot. (He's hitting .345 for the month of June... gotten hits in 8 of his last 10 games.) And he plays the position vacated by the guy who would be moving to 1B. Makes the most sense to me... this week anyway.
-
I'm not a huge Jerry Owens fan... but he is on a roll... .345 batting average in June... .393 OBP http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/st...&pid=435539
