  1. QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Jun 25, 2008 -> 06:56 PM) WOW Detwiler. Good day to have the game of your life. Detwiler 3 for 3, with 2 homeruns and a double, and all 6 Fresno State RBIs. Georgia's on the ropes, behind 6-0.
  2. QUOTE (JPN366 @ Jun 25, 2008 -> 03:03 PM) Like I said, this season he's improved with the bat. Sad, huh? Yep. When I look into the crystal ball, I see insurance sales in his future.
  3. If Valido continues to hit at his current level... This will be the 3rd consecutive year he finishes the season with an OBP under .300... and OPS under .600.
  4. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jun 25, 2008 -> 02:32 PM) It's also good having a glut of SS's like this...they almost always have atleast a bit of value, unless they hit like f'ing Valido. I think his name has now legally been changed to F'ing Valido.
  5. WhiteSox pick Beckham doesn't bend Good article on whitesox.com
  6. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jun 25, 2008 -> 02:21 PM) agree 100% with him bumping Valido...one thing I hadn't thought of though is that they may just be saving SS in W-S for Beckham. Good point. On the other hand, it's hard to predict the timing of him signing, etc. I'm not sure it would affect the current moves. Whenever he does sign and report, they'll probably just move guys to create an opening for him. BTW - there's a nice article on whitesox.com today about Beckham (I think it's called 'Beckham doesn't bend'). Pretty interesting. According to the article, GB has called several of his homerun shots this year. Ballsy for a college player... but I like it.
  7. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jun 25, 2008 -> 01:57 PM) Paiml isn't exactly setting the world on fire either. I'd really like to see Paiml play every day though. He was scorching hot toward the end of last year... just killing the ball. And since he's moved up two levels this year, it's probably not a surprise he's struggling a little. It'll be interesting to see how he does later in the year as he adjusts to this level. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Check out Paiml's month-by-month progression at Great Falls last year: - June batted .150 - July batted .267 - August... .366 - September... a .727 average (8 hits in 11 at-bats) Ended up finishing the season with a .310 average. So, if we're going to have Miranda bump somebody above him, I'd rather have him bump Valido.
  8. Escobar has gone hitless in his three games at Kanny so far. So who knows? It could be that after his hot start in Great Falls that they wanted to see how he looked against A-ball pitching. Maybe he ends up going back to GF. I think it would be an interesting experiment to send Miranda up to Birmingham for a week or two, sort of like they did with Persichina earlier in the year. I know Miranda struggled at W-S but maybe it was timing and mechanical things rather than the pitching. Why not take advantage of him being hot now and see what happens? If it works out and he does well, it could be a nice boost for his confidence. He might even have a chance to stick with the Barons if that happens. Like wite suggests... what do we risk? Holding Valido back?
  9. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jun 25, 2008 -> 01:37 PM) Miranda 1-for-3, his avg now up to .298. OBP is above .375. He looks back to form again, after a horrible start at W-S. But, why is he at DH so much lately? They just brought up Eduardo Escobar from Great Falls. Escobar has played SS the last 3 games and they wanted to keep Miranda's bat in the lineup.
  10. Kannapolis Intimidators (Chicago White Sox) THE WEEK IN REVIEW: The Intimidators (2-1, second half, 33-40 overall) opened second-half play tied for second in the SAL Southern, a half-game behind Columbus, after Saturday. WHO'S HOT: Several Intimidators broke out last week, as IF Sergio Miranda hit .600 (6-for-10) to boost his average to .279 (24-for-86) ... OF Jim Gallagher batted .526 (10-for-19) to improve to .261 (67-for-257). ... 1B Mark Fleisher's .500 (7-for-14) effort has him at .322 (19-for-59) in 19 games with the club. ... RHP Charles Shirek (2-3, 5.05) threw six scoreless innings to win his lone start. WHO'S NOT: C John Curtis is stuck at .192 (23-for-120). ... RHP Juan Moreno (1-4, 7.23) has allowed 19 earned runs in 23 2/3 innings. (Note: Moreno who has been injured most of the year, has been placed on the DL again I believe.) NEWS & NOTES: The White Sox moved to bolster the Kannapolis offense by returning OFs Anderson Gomes and Lee Cruz to the Intimidators. Gomes, one of the few Brazilians playing in organized baseball, hit .300 (85-for-203) in Kannapolis in 2007, but just .196 (27-for-138) in 42 games with Class A Advanced Winston-Salem of the Carolina League. Cruz, who hit .277 (115-for-415) with the 2007 Intimidators, was a .196 (38-for-194) batter with the Warthogs. The veteran pair should give the Kannapolis offense a shot in the arm. (Note: Cruz was sent up to Birmingham this week.) DID YOU KNOW? RHP Henry Mabee continues to perform in superlative fashion out of the bullpen. The native of Surrey, B.C., who played at Morehead State, recorded two more saves last week to push his total to 17, tied for fourth in the SAL with Greensboro's Garrett Parcell.
  11. Winston-Salem Warthogs (Chicago White Sox) WEEK IN REVIEW: Winston-Salem ended the first half with a 5-3 win (completing Saturday's game) and an 8-3 loss at Wilmington, giving the club a 29-40 record and sole possession of last place by just half a game. It looked like more of the same for the Warthogs when they dropped their first two games of the second half to Potomac, but they turned things around with three straight wins to end the first week of the fresh half at 3-2. WHO'S HOT: RHP Jacob Rasner was a starter for most of the first two months of the season before moving to the bullpen in May. He has made a solid adjustment to his new role, which does still include the occasional spot start. In his first five appearances in June, including one start, Rasner has a 1.38 ERA after giving up only two earned runs in 13 innings. WHO'S NOT: 2B Joe Peresichina has had a rough go at the plate since joining the Warthogs in mid-June. In his first five games, Peresichina has one hit in 16 at-bats. ANOTHER ALL-STAR: Reliever Kanekoa Texeira was added to the Carolina League roster for Tuesday's All-Star game against the California League. Texeira, who joins teammate Brandon Allen on the squad, anchored the Winston-Salem bullpen during the first half by going 2-0 with a 1.44 ERA and 12 saves in 23 games. The Warthogs are 5-7 since starting pitcher Aaron Poreda was promoted to Double-A Birmingham, and Texeira has saved four of the victories. SNAKE BIT? "It is seven in a row, isn't it?" manager Tim Blackwell asked the Winston-Salem Journal after another loss to Potomac on June 17. "Well, they have some good players, and they play us well. And the bottom line is we have to play better if we are going to beat them or anyone else. I think it still comes down [to] that we get to the point where we beat ourselves." The streak extended to eight before the Warthogs defeated the P-Nats on June 19. GOPHER BALL HURTS ELY: RHP John Ely was dominant for most of the evening June 18 against Potomac, striking out eight P-Nats and walking none, but he also surrendered four home runs and wound up on the wrong end of a 6-1 decision. "It seemed like things were going well, and then it seemed every ball they put the bat on left the park," Ely told the Winston-Salem Journal. "It was outrageous. I don't know."
  12. Charlotte Knights (Chicago White Sox) THE WEEK IN REVIEW: The Knights went 3-4 last week to move to 32-44 overall. They are third in the South Division, 8 1/2 games behind first-place Durham. WHO'S HOT AND WHO'S NOT: OF Jason Bourgeois has hit .375 with a homer, two RBIs and nine runs scored in his last 10 games. He begins the week on a 10-for-22 tear. ... 1B Brad Eldred has collected five homers and 14 RBIs while scoring nine times in his last 10 contests. ... IFs Javier Castillo (.182) and Fernando Cortez (.160) have combined to bat .170 in the last 10 games. COOK IS COOKING: OF David Cook has been red-hot since joining the Knights on June 12, hitting .351 with a homer, six RBIs and five runs scored in 11 games. Cook, who batted .313 in 63 games with Double-A Birmingham, went 3-for-4 against Norfolk in his second game with Charlotte on June 13 and was 4-for-4 at Richmond four nights later. QUOTE OF THE WEEK: "I'm just trying to stay simple with things: see the ball, hit it." --1B Brad Eldred to the Charlotte Observer. Things have been simple for Eldred this season as his 26 homers and 72 RBIs lead the International League. His 26 roundtrippers are tops in the Minor Leagues, while his 72 RBIs are one behind Oklahoma's Chris Davis.
  13. Birmingham Barons (Chicago White Sox) THE WEEK IN REVIEW: The Barons, who won the South Division first-half title, started the second half by going 3-2 against Jacksonville. WHO'S HOT, WHO'S NOT: RHP Jon Link leads the SL with 19 saves and is 4-1 with a 1.56 ERA. ... RHP Justin Cassel (5-3) lowered his ERA to 3.44 with seven scoreless innings in a no-decision. ... C Cole Armstrong was activated from the DL. ... 1B Micah Schnurstein is 4-for-33 in his last 10 games. PLAYER TO WATCH: 3B Javier Colina opened the second half by going 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs against Jacksonville. He was hitting .302 when promoted from Winston-Salem of the Class A Advanced Carolina League, but started 1-for-11 with the Barons. Colina, 29, hit .309 with 26 homers and 101 RBIs last season for Newark of the independent Atlantic League. PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEK: RHP Carlos Torres pitched eight scoreless innings in a victory over Jacksonville, improving to 8-3 and lowering his ERA 3.23. He is tied for the league lead in victories and tops the circuit with 81 strikeouts in 86 2/3 innings. Torres gave up six hits, walked three and struck out five against the Suns. He is 2-1 with a 1.67 ERA in four June starts.
  14. Day Game Kannapolis @ Lexington Socolovich pitched great: 7 innings; 1 run; on 2 hits; 4 K's; and 1 walk. Kanny won 2-1. Marerro with 2 hits. Inouye and Miranda with RBIs. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Night Games Norfolk @ Charlotte Whisler pitching Charlotte lost 6-1. Whisler was decent... MacDougal was his imploding self in one inning of relief. David Cook went 2-4 in one of the few positive notes on this game. Birmingham @ Mississippi Dewon Day pitching Day was bad. And the Barons got dominated 6-0. The Mississippi pitcher threw a complete game no-hitter... 14 strikeouts and 3 walks. Helena @ Great Falls Cody Allen pitching Kingsport @ Bristol Joucer Martinez pitching ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Off Day Winston-Salem All Star Break
  15. QUOTE (joejoedairy @ Jun 25, 2008 -> 02:33 AM) scenario you are a stud for all of you're updates... but you got nothing on david cook Thanks... and yeah, I know... I have to quit ignoring that Cook guy.
  16. QUOTE (JPN366 @ Jun 24, 2008 -> 08:29 PM) Why hasn't Logan Johnson been promoted yet? He's got 10 homers and 39 RBI's. He's already 24, so maybe he should get a shot at W-S or B'ham. I imagine he'd at least start out at B'ham in 2009, but he should at least get a promotion to W-S this year. He went through sort of a prolonged slump after a very hot start. Quite likely if he picks it back up that he'll end in W-S before the end of the year. Also... it looks like Eduardo Escobar was promoted from Great Falls to Kannapolis. He's in the Kanny lineup tonight.
  17. Bottom of the 9th - Charlotte trailing 5-4... Javier Castillo doubled in the bottom of the 9th to score Danny Richar and tie the game at 5-5. Castillo on 2nd with one out. Noah Hall strikes out. Nicholas Blasi with an infield hit putting runners at 1st and 3rd and two outs. Come on Paul Phillips. LOL. Now I've heard it all. Paul Phillips struck out to end the inning, but the ball got away from the catcher. It was recorded as a wild pitch... Phillips makes 1st on the dropped 3rd strike... and Javier Castillo scored the winning run from 3B. Ballgame. Charlotte wins 6-5.
  18. I think I jinxed Cook. He hit into a double play and struck out twice in his three at-bats since my earlier comments. I hate when that happens. Bourgeois is really coming on since his miserable start to the season. He's 2-4 today, hitting .423 in his last 10 games, and his average is up to a respectable .279 on the season. Nice comeback. And Getz is bouncing back after a short cold streak. 4-5 so far today. Hitting .304 on the season. Top of the 9th inning... Charlotte down 5-4.
  19. David Cook update... 2nd at-bat Single Drives in another run, his second of the game. Charlotte up 3-1. Cook now hitting a paltry .413 (19 for 46) since his promotion to AAA 14 games ago.
  20. Norfolk @ Charlotte Day game... Egbert pitching 1st inning - Bourgeois walked. David Cook doubled and drove him home. 8 innings later... Charlotte ended up winning 6-5 with a two-run bottom of the 9th. See notes below. Bizarre finish. Birmingham @ Mississippi tonight Cassel the starter Barons won 8-5. Barons got 14 hits. Cole Armstrong goes 4-5. Victor Mercedes with a homerun. Who misses David Cook, eh? Winston-Salem is off. The Carolina League all-star game is tonight instead Kannapolis @ Lexington tonight Levi Maxwell the starter Looks like milb.com is offering video coverage on this game. The I's win 12-7 on 16 hits. Mollenhauer with 4 hits. Logan Johnson and Christian Marerro with 3 hits each. Kingsport @ Bristol tonight Onarkys Paniagua pitching Bristol won 3-1. Nice outing for Paniagua: 6 innings; 1 run on 5 hits; 7 K's and 0 walks. Asselin with his 2nd save. Helena @ Great Falls Nevin Griffith pitching GF lost 5-3. Griffith went 5 innings; 0 earned runs; 3 hits; 4 K's; and 4 BB's. Lyndon Estill with a homerun.
  21. Where does the Heath Phillips comparison keep coming from? Heath Phillips was paunchy soft-body fine control pitcher who couldn't break a pane of glass with his fastball. Clayton Richard is a tall (6'5") athletic former football player throws a consistent 92 mph fastball, has breaking stuff that drops down into the high 70's, and was struggling with control until this year (which now seems corrected). Except for being left-handed, white, and pitching in our minor league system, there isn't much similarity between these guys. But, it seems like somebody said it once and it keeps getting repeated. BTW - here's a nice stat. In Richard's 1st three starts at Charlotte (20 innings)... 12 strikeouts and 0 walks. Control problem? What control problem?
  22. Lyndon Estill hit a bottom of the 10th, come from behind, walk-off grand-slam to lift Great Falls to a 9-6 win tonight. GF goes 6-1 to start the season. Nice.
  23. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jun 23, 2008 -> 08:33 PM) Chuck Norris has nothing on David Cook. David Cook's 2007. Ranked among organizational leaders in runs scored (1st, 92), walks (1st, 75), home runs (3rd, 24), extra-base hits (5th, 56), RBIs (6th, 75), slugging percentage (6th, .531), total bases (6th, 233), hits (8th, 124) and on-base percentage (8th, .388). ... made 61 appearances in right field, 34 in left, 18 in center and nine at designated hitter. ... Was named Carolina League Batter of the Week for April 5-15. ... Made his Birmingham debut on Aug. 3 and reached base safely in his first 15 games with the Barons, hitting .432 (19-for-44) during that span. Was named Southern League Batter of theWeek for Aug. 6-12. David Cook's 2008. Even better!!! Tore up AA. Got promoted at mid-season. Now tearing up AAA. David Cook's 2009. ???
  24. I think Joshua Fields could be pitching for Seattle by this time next year. That combination of heat + curveball is lethal.
  25. It will be very interesting to see how Gartrell plays in the second half. He looked like David Cook last year at Kanny... then got promoted to W-S for only 20 games. And then started this year at Birmingham. That's a big jump in one year... from low A-ball to AA. Hopefully, his recent hot streak (7 hits and 3 walks in his last 15 plate appearances) means he's adjusting to the pitching and that we'll see a much improved 2nd half.
