Before people get overly concerned about Viciedo's .238 average... Please note that on Friday (three games ago), he was batting .310.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 21, 2009 -> 10:47 AM) Don't they have a monster of a ballpark though? It may not be a great park for hitting homeruns, but tough to say the park is responsible for the good ERAs when the Barons are putting up runs in it. Hard to say it's a bad hitting park, but we can hit well there. Plus all the teams we've played so far are in the top 1/2 of the league offensively... no dogs yet.

QUOTE (JPN366 @ Apr 20, 2009 -> 10:47 PM) Nunez... The numbers may be good, but the process is ugly. Elaborate. The company line is that KW and Sox scouts really like him because he has alot of movement on his pitches. That's also what Steve Stone said after watching him during spring training. What are you seeing that we're not hearing?

QUOTE (BearSox @ Apr 20, 2009 -> 09:41 PM) AA has all the hitting and a little pitching talent, while Kanny has all the starting pitching and a little hitting talent. Hopefully within the coming years, it will be a nice balance of awesome all around for all 6 of our affiliates. Actually Birmingham has quite a bit of pitching talent. (Including Poreda, Ely, Omogrosso, Harrell, Santeliz, Nunez...) They're 3rd out of 10 teams in the Southern League with a 2.85 team ERA. (The league leader has a 2.60. So the Barons are not that far from the top spot.)
-
Also... after 11 games, Kannapolis pitching has a 1.27 team ERA. And a 0.88 WHIP.

Infante named South Atlantic League Pitcher of the Week KANNAPOLIS, NC- Intimidators right-hander Greg Infante was named the South Atlantic League Pitcher of the Week after a blistering start to the 2009 season. Over the first week of the campaign, Infante (1-0) pitched 12 scoreless innings over two starts. The 21-year-old out of Caracas, Venezuela started the season in stunning fashion, striking out 11 over six no-hit innings on Opening Night. The award, which includes the opening week and a half of the season (April 8-19), is the first for Infante in the South Atlantic League. He was also named Appalachian League pitcher of the week on August 4, 2008. Infante is next scheduled to pitch in Tuesday's series opener with the Greenville Drive at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 20, 2009 -> 05:20 PM) If we do bring up Nix, where/how is he going to play at all? He'll be behind Betemit on the PH list...and Nix can't play any other positions on the field besides 2B. Nix starting at SS tonight for Birmingham

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Apr 20, 2009 -> 02:44 PM) I'm thinking he would make it through. Everyone could have signed him this past offseason. His spring training numbers were stellar but it was the first couple of weeks of games where pitchers were far from 100% in terms of effectiveness. Who would you rather take that the risk of losing... Nix or Owens?
-
Although, I could see a scenario where he becomes BA's backup soon. According to JPN, Nix just started a 3-day rehab assignment in Birmingham. If he's ready to come back, I could picture Nix taking Owen's spot on the roster... which would probably result in Lilli getting time in CF.
-
Great news. I wonder what the timeline is for the Sox to bring him back up.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 19, 2009 -> 11:45 AM) Carrasco has decent or average stuff for a reliever...91-93 MPH, nothing special, but MacDougal's lost about 5 MPH off his fastball (like Colon) and that slider isn't consistent enough to work backwards from. I don't Mac has lost any speed. The power is still there. It's just that he has less control over his fastball than he does over his other pitches. So, he's had to back off on velocity to try and get it over the plate. If he leans back and fires, he can still hit 97. But it's more likely to go to the backstop than in the catcher's mitt.

QUOTE (flavum @ Apr 18, 2009 -> 10:50 PM) I wouldn't lump Carrasco with MacDougal. Not by a mile. They're actually like mirror opposites, aren't they? One guy with great stuff and no control. The other with good control but no stuff.
-
Looks like the new Yankee stadium is going to be a homer-dome. They've had some pretty harmless looking flyballs flying out of the park. I saw a fan on a Cleveland board comment how it makes USCF look like Dodger stadium in comparison.
-
Alright Charlotte! 2-1 win. Nice pitching performances by Torres and relievers. Andy Phillips goes 2-4. Josh Kroeger waking up from his slumber... 3-4 with a homerun.
-
OMG, I thought that was waaaaay gone. Whew.
-
Corky Miller has to be classified as a pleasant surprise so far.

QUOTE (fathom @ Apr 18, 2009 -> 08:20 PM) Please don't let this game get interesting. I do not like this Dotel-Pena matchup. I really hope Dotel proves me wrong.
-
Looks like the Baron bats woke up... now 8-1. David Cook with a homerun.
-
QUOTE (danman31 @ Apr 18, 2009 -> 08:03 PM) I wouldn't mind giving Macdougal a scrub 9th (with a pretty quick hook) if the lead is still 5. Have you considered a career as a horror film director? That's a pretty scary script.
-
Apparently Dexter Carter left the Kanny game Friday night in the 4th inning with an injury. Not sure what it was.
-
QUOTE (joesaiditstrue @ Apr 18, 2009 -> 07:56 PM) i think he's being a bit (quite a bit) overrated on here How is that? There's probably no other player on the roster, other than MacDougal and Owens, who has been trashed more than Lillibridge.
-
Carlos Torres with his second consecutive very good outing for Charlotte. (He's still in the game.) After 5 innings: 0 runs on 3 hits; 7 K's and 2 BB's.

QUOTE (fathom @ Apr 18, 2009 -> 11:13 PM) * Ugh, Betemit looks terrible against LHP. ----------------------------------------------------------------- That's because he IS terrible against LHP. Whoever encouraged him to be a switch hitter potentially screwed up his career. And the fact that the Sox put him in situations to hit right-handed in inexcusable.
