  1. QUOTE (Heads22 @ May 2, 2009 -> 07:30 PM) Where is Stoney? He's got a couple of weekends off built into his contract.
  2. QUOTE (kapkomet @ May 2, 2009 -> 06:03 PM) Gotta love these Texas thunderstorms. I've lived in several places around the country, including Austin for a year. I swear I've never seen rain anywhere like a Texas thunderstorm.
  3. QUOTE (tommy @ May 2, 2009 -> 05:56 PM) What happened? A windstorm caused their practice bubble (inflatable building) to collapse. 7 people were injured. 1 critically. No names released yet. I'm sure they'll be talking about it alot tonight on CNN, etc. There were video people inside and the whole thing got caught on film.
  4. I have a hard time picturing them playing tonight. Especially after the incident at the Cowboys practice field an hour ago.
  5. QUOTE (knightni @ May 1, 2009 -> 05:55 PM) I never said that his no-hitters and K marks weren't great; I just said that he wasn't a great "pitcher." He was a dominating thrower who was wild enough to scare people into respecting him on the mound. He stayed in the game long enough to get 300 wins and be a "lock" for the Hall. I've always thought Nolan Ryan was to pitching what Clint Eastwood is to acting. Seemed to get better and taken more seriously as he got older. (That's not a knock on Clint. I love his movies... particularly the more recent ones. Unforgiven? Hall of Fame stuff.)
  6. Crooked Numbers: April in the Minors (link to article) "The purpose of "Crooked Numbers" is to take a look back at the month that was in the Minor Leagues, highlighting some of the many curious and absurd incidents that have taken place." Some interesting stories, including this one... You Learn Something New Every Day: On April 23, the Greensboro Grasshoppers defeated the Asheville Tourists, 8-7, in 14 innings. The game was a wild affair on many levels -- first baseman Bo Bowman pitched the 14th for the Tourists and took the loss, for example -- but the most memorable aspect of the contest was that pitchers from both teams filled in as pinch-umpires. Below is an excerpt from the story written on the game: This rare, but not unprecedented, occurrence was the result of a scary event that took place in the sixth inning. Home plate umpire Koyu Inoue was struck in the head by a foul ball and knocked unconscious, and the ballgame was delayed for 47 minutes while he was attended to on the field. Inoue was taken to a hospital for observation, but returned to the ballpark later in the evening. When play resumed, field umpire Jason Hutchings moved behind home plate. Taking his place in the field were a pair of pitchers -- Brandon Todd of the Grasshoppers and Adam Jorgenson of the Tourists. Yes, this is standard operating procedure. "This isn't as unusual as you may think it is, especially in leagues with a two-umpire system," said Justin Klemm, the executive director of the Professional Baseball Umpires Corporation (PBUC). "Should one umpire become ill or injured, the other umpire can use his discretion and select a player from each team to work the bases."
  7. QUOTE (BearSox @ May 2, 2009 -> 08:47 AM) He threw 77 pitches and had one out to go... It wasn't the pitch count that led to Washington taking him out, it was over managing. Feldman also had Thome's number on that night as well. You seem to be ignoring the fact that Feldman was starting to come apart. It doesn't really matter how well he was doing before that inning. We've all seen that act before... cough, cough, Javy Vazquez, cough.
  8. Another player having a nice little run right now... W-S 2B Dale Mollenhauer. Batting .455 over his last 10 games (15 for 33). Raises his season average to .365
  9. Melton... Knocking Cleveland's rotation... Making comments about Pavano and then mentions Slowey... Slowey?
  10. Pretty nice 6 inning outing for Omogrosso tonight... Gave up 3 runs on 5 hits; struck out 10 and walked 2. Birmingham up 4-3 in the 7th. Beckham and Retherford with 2 hits apiece.

  12. We lit up Georgia's Josh Fields??? Nice! He is the most dominating college reliever I've seen in several years. Bonus points for our guys slapping him around.
  13. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 30, 2009 -> 08:22 PM) Shelby has been picking it up the last 7-10 days. 5 doubles now, 4 stolen bases, batting average has risen to .264, around 730 OPS. Every year he seems to go on a big roll at some point. It's a beautiful thing when he does. It's not a singles fest either. Watch him put up a bunch of homeruns and doubles before year end. I'm betting he ends up around .300 with 25 doubles and 15 homeruns.
  14. QUOTE (kristofer @ Apr 30, 2009 -> 05:55 PM) how does john ely predict to end up in our organization? Welcome to the board and thanks for your post. If he makes it, he'd likely be a back of the rotation type starter... between 3-5. Has decent stuff. Scouting reports give him bonus points for makeup and poise. And has a bit of a deceptive motion, which could help him get a shot.

  16. A young Nolan Ryan? Where does THAT come from? Greinke has pinpoint control and can throw the ball anywhere he wants in the strike zone. That's why he's successful. Nolan Ryan averaged... for his career... walking 4.7 per 9 innings. He had a couple of seasons where he averaged 6BB's per 9. Ryan's claim to fame was that he could throw it by anybody... when he got it over the plate. Two completely opposite styles IMO.
  17. How's this for a starting rotation? Player W | L | ERA | G IP H R ER | BB | SO | WHIP Leesman 3 | 0 | 1.78 | 4 25 20 8 5 | 5 | 15 | 0.99 GInfante 1 | 0 | 0.75 | 4 24 14 3 2 | 9 | 22 | 0.96 DxCarter 1 | 0 | 1.69 | 4 21 15 5 4 | 5 | 23 | 0.94 GJohnson 1 | 2 | 3.71 | 3 17 16 7 7 | 3 | 14 | 1.12 DHudson 1 | 2 | 1.80 | 3 15 13 5 3 | 1 | 17 | 0.93
  18. QUOTE (Greg Hibbard @ Apr 29, 2009 -> 04:59 PM) At what point does his 1.9 season WHIP become disconcerting to people If he has anything close to that when the weather is warm look for his ERA to approach 8. That's the beautiful thing about extrapolating numbers from small samples, isn't it? Chris Getz is going to hit .340; Carlos Quentin is on track for 64 homeruns. Zach Greinke is going to finish the season with a 0.00 ERA. Etc., etc., etc... It has to be. Because things are going to stay just like they are right now, right?
  19. QUOTE (Greg Hibbard @ Apr 29, 2009 -> 04:57 PM) Really worried about Floyd though. Nah. How many people hit him hard today? One? At least 3 of the hits he gave up never left the infield. And a few more were of the Minnesota Twins gork-shot variety. If not for that fluky slow-rolling bounce-off-the-bag grounder by Ichiro to start the M's two-run 'rally', Gavin probably gets out of this today giving up only 1 run. So... not a great outing but not bad.
  20. Great input chunk23! Good stories. I especially like the one about CJ getting in trouble with his mom for swearing at an ump. LOL. I love it. Sports families.
  21. QUOTE (JPN366 @ Apr 29, 2009 -> 04:23 PM) Apparently Jeff Marquez has been placed on the DL. Hmmm.... could create a spot in the rotation for... Freddy Garcia. Why not? If nothing else, it might entertain Charlotte fans for awhile.
  22. QUOTE (Wanne @ Apr 29, 2009 -> 04:25 PM) Anderson swung so hard at one and fouled it probably ripped his colon in half. Is it just me or does it always appear BA swings too heavy a bat? It's not just you.
  23. QUOTE (TitoMB345 @ Apr 29, 2009 -> 04:07 PM) Shocking.. another solo shot. And another.
  24. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 29, 2009 -> 04:01 PM) Better watch Beltre before he steals again. Now he has to endure the walk of shame... Going back to the dugout after getting thrown out by AJ.
  25. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Apr 29, 2009 -> 03:47 PM) So now Betemit gets to hit LH. Good. ^^^^^^^^^ Absolutely.
