  1. If we signed him to a major league contract right away, can we trade him right away? Imagine the package we could get from the Yankees or Red Sox in that scenario.
  2. QUOTE (flavum @ May 11, 2009 -> 04:47 PM) Boers was just repeating what he heard from somebody in the Sox organization. It wasn't based on his own observations. Actually, Boers just says things he thinks will increase the number of phone calls and listeners... whether there is any basis in fact is irrelevant. Might sound like I'm being overly critical and/or cynical. But that's not my intent. I like Boers (and Bernstein). I just don't have alot of respect for their baseball knowledge. Football? Absolutely! They cover football well. Very knowledgeable. But IMO, their sports IQ drops about 50 points when they start talking baseball. It's the one part of their show I find myself turning the channel more often than not.
  3. Since when does Boers know the first thing about baseball? He's entertaining, but not exactly a fountain of baseball knowledge. And IMO, he knows less about the WhiteSox than the average Cubs forum poster.
  4. Update... Clean Up Continuing from Southern Illinois Storms The clean up continued Saturday in the Carbondale and Marion area after thunderstorms packing 100-mile per hour winds and spawning funnel clouds slammed through the area on Friday. Governor Pat Quinn has declared Franklin, Jackson and Williamson Counties a state disaster area. That will ensure state help is available to local officials to protect public safety and quickly recover from the destructive storm. Ameren IP (utility company) reports a small army of more than 12-hundred men and women are working to restore power to more than 63-thousand electric customers. The company has set a goal of completing the restoration effort by midnight on Tuesday. Winds described as an 'inland hurricane' toppled hundreds of utility poles, brought electric wires to the ground, slammed trees into transmission lines and damaged equipment. The Red Cross has set up four storm shelters. Meanwhile, Commencement will go on as planned this weekend at Southern Illinois University's Carbondale campus despite damage from severe storms. Some trees are down and windows broken on campus cancelling Friday graduation ceremonies. Those scheduled for Saturday and Sunday are being held at McAndrew Stadium. At least seven persons were injured in the storm. A truck driver who had to be extricated from an overturned semi-trailer was in serious condition at a Carbondale Hospital. The six others brought to Memorial Hospital in Carbondale all reportedly had minor injuries. 95% of the homes in Williamson County were without power as a result of the storm. Saw on another site that the utility company has 1,400 people working round the clock trying to get power back up. As of Monday morning, approximately 1/3 of the homes have power back on again.
  5. QUOTE (danman31 @ May 10, 2009 -> 08:16 PM) Yeah that Carter line is one of the weirdest lines I've ever seen. Just noticed he gave up 3 homeruns that accounted for 5 of the runs scored against him. Here's a recap from milb.com... Intimidators clobbered by Captains Lake County goes deep three times in 9-0 victory EASTLAKE, OH - Lake County scored six runs before an out was recorded on Sunday afternoon at Classic Park on their way to a clinical 9-0 demolition of the Kannapolis Intimidators. Dexter Carter was on the mound for most of the damage, as the right-hander gave up seven runs in five innings, including six in the first frame. Carter (1-1) did recover and struck out a season-high 11 hitters, including four in the fourth inning. The Captains built their large lead on the strength of three home runs, one each from Nate Recknagel, Chris Nash and Karexon Sanchez. The Intimidators pitching staff had given up just two long balls all season, before the Captains offensive fireworks against Carter. And while the Intimidators pitching staff was getting roughed up, Captains (13-16) starter T.J. McFarland was having his best outing of the season. McFarland (1-2) allowed just three hits in six innings. Eddie Burns kept the Intimidators (16-14) off the board for the final three innings for his first save of the season. Tyler Kuhn and Justin Greene each had two hits for Kannapolis, but the Intimidators were held to eight hits and were shutout for the second time in the last four games.
  6. QUOTE (BearSox @ May 10, 2009 -> 11:12 PM) Carbondale as in where SIU is located? Yep. Here's a quote from one of the few articles I could find about it on the internet... although I'm sure we'll hear more about it soon. Williamson County officials are estimating between 35 and 50 injuries and millions of dollars worth of damage from a storm that ripped through Southern Illinois Friday afternoon. The storm, being referred to as an "inland hurricane" by the National Weather Service, produced winds clocked as high as 106 miles per hour in neighboring Carbondale and up to 86 miles per hour near the Willamson County Airport. "For the National Weather Service to refer to this as an inland hurricane is significant," said Williamson County Emergency Managment Agency Director Alan Gower. "The storm had all of the characteristics of a hurricane — the circular motion, the eye, and of course the hurricane force winds." Williamson County Board Chairman Tracey Glenn signed an official disaster declaration at 4:19 p.m Friday. That declaration opened the door to possible state and federal assistance.
  7. Just talked to my sister who lives in C'Dale. Friday they had a storm classified as an inland hurricane (I kid you not) with winds of 106mph. Looks like sections of the Carbondale area are expected to be without power for a week and possibly more. I heard absolutely nothing about this in the news. Not sure if I just missed it or if it didn't get any coverage. Anyway, I thought it was worth mentioning for those with Carbondale connections.
  8. One more game... W-S played a double-header today. They lost 5-4. Maxwell got slapped around. The only notable positives... - D2 had a homerun - Adam Ricks had 2 hits including a homerun. - Santo Luis pitched an inning without giving any runs... 'bout time.
  9. QUOTE (Reddy @ May 10, 2009 -> 12:44 PM) ouch. that stings. On the other hand, except for the Twins, we haven't had too many big draw-type series yet. Seattle, Toronto... yawn. And it's not any better in May. For example, the only weekend series we have left at home this month is against the Pirates. Plus the weather has been crap. The big names start rolling in during June. (Cubs, Dodgers, Cleveland, Detroit, etc.) Then, if we're playing decently, walk-up sales should be much better.
  10. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 10, 2009 -> 11:43 AM) That's why I am trying to understand how the worst team in the AL pretty much outdrew us...it can't be because of that tremendous crossover of Blackhawk fans waiting for the 930 start in Vancouver. FWIW, on the season, the Sox are outdrawing Cleveland by about 3,500 per game so far.
  11. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ May 10, 2009 -> 11:09 AM) Anyone up for explaining Lillibridge over Kroeger? We just calling it, "an Ozzie being Ozzie?" If Betemit hadn't been an absolute hack in his attempts during S/T to play SS, then I think Kroeger might have been up instead of Lilli. But we had to have a backup SS, Nix was hurt, and Betemit wasn't it... so... there it is.
  12. Tony Sanchez, C, Boston College Class: Junior Hometown: Miami, Fla. 13. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 10, 2009 -> 08:23 AM) I don't know where Hawk got the idea that Brandon Allen got off to a disastrous start this season. I think he must have been confused with Viciedo. I don't where Hawk gets any of his ideas.
  14. QUOTE (knightni @ May 9, 2009 -> 09:32 PM) The Legend Continues I like the title of the Yahoo version of the story... "Strasburg tosses 17 K no-hitter; Boras to Nats: 'Mwahahaha'"
  15. Looks like Cole Armstrong's career peaked in the Arizona Fall League. .136 batting average in Charlotte... .191 OBP... Cole Armstrong your career dissipation light is flashing.
  16. Look at the ERAs of the pitchers going tonight...
  17. Greinke vs. Saunders tonight in the Royals-Angels game. Come on Halos! It sure would be nice if Greinke would prove he is actually human.
  18. QUOTE (fathom @ May 8, 2009 -> 10:26 PM) Don't count me in as someone who thinks Richard has no chance of being a MLB starting pitcher. I think he can be a solid #4/5 starter in the majors. Don't forget that LHP in our division, especially, is extremely valuable. ^^^^^^^^^ I'd start Richard. No hesitation.
  19. QUOTE (flavum @ May 8, 2009 -> 09:59 PM) Second homer of the night for CJ Retherford. 5 homers this season. Why isn't this guy a real prospect again? Because he's ugly or something? The real reason CJ doesn't receive the acclaim he could get is because he was undrafted. And the reason he was undrafted... two issues: 1. He didn't have a clear position in college. In fact, he played EVERY position, literally... including being a pretty decent pitcher. His coach at Arizona State said during CJ's junior year that he thought he'd eventually end up as a catcher. (During one game at ASU he actually pitched and caught in the same inning. LOL.) 2. He suffered a high ankle sprain early during his final season. So he didn't play much until late in the year. (Although he kicked *** for ASU in the CWS.) So... no clear position and injured in his final year which lead to his being overlooked by most teams. Except for us. Advantage us.
  20. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 8, 2009 -> 09:51 PM) Didn't enjoy the division title last year? ^^^^^^^^^^^ Took the words right out of my mouth. Plus... we don't have anybody in AAA except a couple of potential relievers and a couple of possible back-up position players. Ride this year out. Give the guys in AA a chance to develop before throwing them to the wolves.
  21. Charlotte @ Rochester Barons @ Montgomery Potomac @ Winston-Salem Kannapolis @ Lakewood
  22. I second the thought on picking up a catcher. In fact, if a really good one is available I'd consider using one of our first 5 picks. But I'd want one who has both offensive and defensive skills.
  23. QUOTE (wilmot825 @ May 7, 2009 -> 10:47 PM) Oh I understand Greinke is a leader by far, I'm just saying is there a possibility Mark can do it this year Yes. If Greinke steps in front of a bus. Other than that, no.
  24. Lost in the shadow of the Barons' offensive performance is the fact that Omogrosso is having himself a VERY nice outing.
  25. QUOTE (flavum @ May 7, 2009 -> 08:52 PM) 14 doubles for Gordo. Leads the Southern League.
