Sox/O's postponed again for 4/28.
QUOTE (sin city sox fan @ Apr 28, 2015 -> 01:41 PM) The Oakland A's played the first 16 games of the 1996 season at Cashman Field in Las Vegas - capacity 9334 (over 12,000 with standing room and outfield grass seating). That's the closest I'm aware of to 7000. Didn't the Expos play a couple of games in Puerto Rico or something like that in a real small stadium?

QUOTE (Tex @ Apr 28, 2015 -> 01:35 PM) I'm not certain that MLB needs to get "facts out there" in this situation. They should be exploring multiple options, listing them just adds to the uncertainty and speculation. The leadership should be internal. Let's look at unintended consequences of a couple options. The O's forfeit the series. Next time, teams will fight to play games in this situation potentially placing fans and players in a dangerous situation. Play the games in Washington, Chicago, anywhere there is an empty stadium. Deep economic loss to the area. Remember how MLB owners argue that a stadium adds to much to the local economy? They can't have it both ways, losing a home game has the opposite affect. Teams shouldn't be punished for doing the right thing especially when it involves the health and safety of players and fans. The economic loss of a couple of Orioles games pales in comparison to the economic loss these riots will certainly produce. Not only with having to pay emergency personnel OT, all the destruction, loss of businesses, which means loss of jobs. I don't know if anyone really ever goes to Baltimore for vacation, but they probably do go for a baseball series. Now most will have second thoughts. I know MLB has to be sensitive to the area. They do, however, have a responsibility to maintain integrity with their teams. Sometimes there is nothing you can do, but there certainly has been options here, and so far the option they have used has been to basically do nothing.

QUOTE (shipps @ Apr 28, 2015 -> 01:30 PM) The fact that there are social issues that are in play here and its not because of a hurricane or natural disaster I am giving the benefit of the doubt that they have some reasoning behind what they are concluding. Maybe they have dropped the ball, I am not sure yet until I hear their side. During the riots in Detroit in the 60s, the Orioles were in Detroit to play the Tigers. Game 1 got ppd. Games 2 and 3 were played in Baltimore.

Baltimore Riots
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 28, 2015 -> 01:19 PM) And equally notable there are plenty of good people in Baltimore who are justifiably angry with situations there who did not want things to devolve into a riot or contribute to that riot. Right. I think most realize most of the people weren't contributing to the chaos, and many were trying to stop it. But the people who were throwing the rocks, who were looting the stores, who were setting things on fire, are not part of that group. We saw the footage. The people running into the mall and running out with items are criminals. The people busting into a liquor store and CVS, and throwing rocks and bricks, are criminals. All of them. There were several criminal cops in the footage we have seen, but the difference is, it isn't all of them. When there is video of people committing crimes, I don't think it's wrong to call them criminals.

Why do I have the feeling, Angelos has threatened lawsuits if MLB forced these games to be played anywhere but Camden Yards.

Baltimore Riots
QUOTE (Stan Bahnsen @ Apr 28, 2015 -> 01:02 PM) And this is part of the grim reality of the situation. You simply aren't going to get the "best and brightest" risking their lives on a daily basis for $35K a year. Paying more means raising taxes locally - good luck with that. I think one thing that is being lost is there are plenty of good cops out there., even in Baltimore. There were guys that certainly didn't deserve having rocks and bricks thrown at them last night.

Sox/O's postponed again for 4/28.
We already know, if they plan on playing in Baltimore tomorrow, they cannot start it at it's scheduled time. I really don't know how you can stay in Baltimore at this point. What is there that suggests even slightly that the situation will be much safer tomorrow? And if they don't want to go back to Chicago or take a bus to DC, then cancel the damn game tomorrow now. Maybe JR was on to something when he opposed this commissioner.

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Apr 28, 2015 -> 12:46 PM) Exchanging tickets would be a complete disaster. The box office just can't take that kind of volume. Unless no one showed up, I guess, which would be possible. They'd have to find a way to scan the existing tickets in, IMO. Which would be simple if both parks use the same ticketing vendor (i.e. TicketMaster/Archtics), but virtually impossible if they didn't, unless there would be some way to utilize existing hardware/infrastructure. Just use the tickets previously sold like you would a rainout to a game that won't be made up, and sell GA to the games.

Sox/O's postponed again for 4/28.
Here's Manfred's quote yesterday: "All I want to say about that is we are looking at every possible alternative in terms of completing the schedule in a timely way and making sure the games are played in a security situation that is safe for the fans," he said Monday night. "We are going to look at every alternative at this point." I guess doing nothing is what they decided.

QUOTE (shipps @ Apr 28, 2015 -> 12:36 PM) Of course that is part of it but I still think people are poo pooing the idea that there is a whole lot that goes into moving a baseball game on the fly. But under the circumstances, a 40 mile trip is not that far and the particulars should be able to be worked out. Or, a decision to go back to Chicago and play the games should have been made after yesterday's postponments. They are acting slower than the Mayor of Baltimore.

QUOTE (Tex @ Apr 28, 2015 -> 11:36 AM) Just thinking about tickets. If you have tickets for Section 201 Row D Seats 15 and 16 and those seats do not exist in the other park, or are substantially different, where do people sit? Do you exchange tickets at the gate? How long would that process take? It seems like it would take more than a day for logistics. Parking, etc etc. You give all ticketholders credit for their tickets and re-sell tickets on line and at the park. It would be a very limited crowd. It wasn't that long ago where people had to go to the box office to get tickets.

Baltimore Riots
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Apr 28, 2015 -> 11:04 AM) You're all over the place here. Why is it bad to call kids throwing rocks/bricks at cops and setting things on fire thugs? Where has anyone, me specifically, said that everyone in baltimore is a thug? Clearly we're all talking about specific people here. I agree. And people who steal things from stores, burn buildings and cars and throw rocks and bricks at policemen and firefighers are, by definition, criminals.

Sox/O's postponed again for 4/28.
I know the Nats/Orioles relationship isn't the best, but sometimes you have to play with the enemy. I know it's not easy getting staffing together and tickets are a problem, but really, just give all the Oriole ticketholders a credit and give away cheap seats to anyone who makes the trek to DC. It wouldn't be well attended, so you could get by with a skeleton crew. If I'm Hahn, I tell MLB either move it somewhere else or postpone game 3. No reason the White Sox should have to spend another night in that situation.

Baltimore Riots
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 28, 2015 -> 10:22 AM) Two different groups. The mall situation began at 3 p.m. And the guy on the scene said the average age was 16 or 17, he wasn't at the mall.

QUOTE (PlaySumFnJurny @ Apr 28, 2015 -> 10:01 AM) Respectfully, I completely disagree. There is absolutely no reason for it to be played, and doing so sends no "message" whatsoever. This is not FDR preserving the American way of life on the homefront during WWII. This itself is a war zone. I think the game should be played. Just not in Baltimore. They have a viable alternative 40 miles away.

Baltimore Riots
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 28, 2015 -> 10:15 AM) Those were all the high schoolers near the mall responding to the online "purge" invitation/s. Nothing specifically to do with the police brutality situation at all. This was actually before they went to the mall. This was when they were showing the liquor stores, the cell phone store and the CVS being ransacked.

Baltimore Riots
QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Apr 28, 2015 -> 10:10 AM) but its the ones that don't get there, like your case, that just build up tensions but never get addressed. I bet the chief or a supervisor knew about it, or cases before yours. Yes, there has to be a 'want to' from management, but you have to start somewhere. On CNN last night they had someone on who said the average age of the looters was 16 or 17. Were they really looting because they all had built up tensions, or where they just taking advantage of the situation? I think the majority of people destroying businesses and starting fires, and throwing rocks and bricks at cops and firefighters weren't present during the peaceful protests.

Baltimore Riots
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 28, 2015 -> 09:06 AM) Yes. The LAPD had to significantly reform after 1991. We're watching right now as the Ferguson police department has the DOJ light shined on them and people are resigning/being forced out, and the practice of fining the community as a way of funding the city seems like it's also on the way out with it, and those are just a couple recent ones. So this wouldn't have been possible without the fires and the looting? How is that neighborhood in LA these days?

Baltimore Riots
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 28, 2015 -> 09:04 AM) This is a statement by Oriole's COO John Angelos made over the weekend after they had the first issue at the ballpark. Where is Orioles swag made? I'd love to know where their giveaways are made as well.

Baltimore Riots
I think the vast majority of the rioters had nothing to do with the peaceful protests. I wouldn't be surprised if the majority of them barely knew why the protests were occurring. Just some punks who decided to take advantage of the situation, and now, despite all the "free" stuff they stole yesterday, will be paying for their actions for years. Unfortunately, the people who were going about this the civil way will be paying for this as well, and there is no doubt these actions like setting buildings on fire, destroying businesses, throwing bricks at police, will hurt the overall cause. Has rioting ever worked?

2014-2015 NBA thread
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Apr 28, 2015 -> 07:40 AM) This isnt a genius observation or anything, but you can usually tell within a few shots that Dunleavy is going to be worthwhile or worthless on the court. Last night right off the bat you could tell he wasnt going to be on the stat sheet There are a lot of players like that.

Attendance 2015
QUOTE (ewokpelts @ Apr 28, 2015 -> 07:43 AM) There will be no blankets left. I'm willing to put money on it. Especially after the sox started letting people come in and out for multiple SGA items. I showed up 5 minutes before the game last year and got a Tony LaRussa bobblehead. They had so many left over, they gave some away this past Sunday for checking in with the MLB Ballpark app. But I do agree, free sells. I really don't know what I would do with a Jose Abreu blanket. Ebay seems nice. I did sell the gumball machine championship ring they gave away in 2006 on ebay for $300. I thought when they received it, they would be pissed, but the lady contacted me and told me she was so happy. When I was a kid, I went to a game with my dad on umbrella night. Sure enough, it did rain.

John Danks
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 28, 2015 -> 08:01 AM) So how exactly is using Gavin Floyd as one counterexample (and Ptac would tear it apart because the original problem was the screws inserted and the bone/muscle tearing apart, not TJ or ligament replacement surgery) supposed to prove anything? Many are arguing that Josh Hamilton for Danks would be a very good deal for the Sox, and, looking at his stats from 2012 on...there's very little to indicate that would be a good risk performance-wise, not to mention the likelihood of another relapse. By the time Homer Bailey is ready to pitch, and no one knows how effectively, the obligation to John Danks will be close to $0.00, if not $0.00. PTAC would not tear my example apart. He would tear apart the notion that TJ surgery has a 100% success rate, and that everyone comes back just as good as before. Danks for Bailey would be a horrific trade for the White Sox.

John Danks
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 28, 2015 -> 07:31 AM) You do when he's a fifth starter who is overpaid and underproductive. It's very simple....that $26 million will go a long ways in fixing the problem of Danks' early departure. And our fifth starter would/could be Noesi, it doesn't have to be Danks. Heck, it could be Erik Johnson, Beck or Frankie Montas, too. Finally, after all these articles about TJ surgery since last year....you really believe that Homer Bailey's going to be out TWO FULL SEASONS? When has that ever happened in the last 10-15 years? Why would teams take Hoffman, Fedde, Matuella, Kirby and Aiken so high? TJ surgery worked out real well for Gavin Floyd. You can't believe the money the Sox owe Danks, yet want to add $55 million on top of it for a guy who won't even pitch for at least a year.
