QUOTE (staxx @ Mar 12, 2015 -> 10:09 AM) I agree. There is no reason to be negative in spring training. It's supposed to be a fun time, and personally I love hearing about the improvements that players are making. There are 162 games for us to complain about how bad someone is. Let spring hope be eternal. If anyone actually read my post, I said I take these spring training fluff pieces with a grain of salt, knowing unless they are talking surgery needed, spring training pieces are always encouraging.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Mar 12, 2015 -> 09:56 AM) hey, Dick Allen says stop being positive because Felipe Paulino and Will Ferrell. If this isnt definitive proof that nobody can succeed, i dont know what is. BS. And for the record, I wasn't the one who brought up Paulino. But everyone in the White Sox camp is great. So we have that going for us. Beckham's in a better place, so why don't you go after the people constantly slamming him? http://my.chicagotribune.com/#section/-1/a...e/p2p-82658274/

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Mar 12, 2015 -> 09:20 AM) I don't recall Felipe Paulino looking particularly good in ST last year. Take 5 seconds and google looks like Coop was working his magic. http://www.southsidesox.com/2014/3/18/5521...o-adds-a-cutter

Does anyone ever look bad in spring training on the practice field? Just take the encouraging things about Jesse Crain. You would think he has at least a minor shot of being on the opening day roster, but I actually read from some insider non fluff piece, the Sox are "hoping" to get him in a spring training game as some point, so really, if Will Ferrell can play spring training games, Jesse Crain isn't close. Ynoa may be a decent pick up. But until he starts showing how great he looks in games that count, I take all the good reports with a grain of salt. His ERA was over 5.00 in high A last year.

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Mar 11, 2015 -> 03:09 PM) No. Nor do I know how you could have derived that. He IS faster and more defensively versatile, which is what I did say. As a back-up, yes. Sanchez has upside. I don't believe Beckham does. I like a guy on the bench who has a chance to break out. Who wouldn't? Beckham might be a marginally better hitter as of last year, but Sanchez could easily eclipse him if he improves, which isn't unlikely given that he's 22 or 23 or whatever. They seem about equal defensively, Sanchez is faster, and Sanchez is a switch-hitter. That doesn't mean he's better. And you said Beckham isn't one of the top 25. Hater's gonna hate. If Sanchez does have all this upside, I'd rather he be in Charlotte playing everyday than scattered ABs at the major league level. Sitting on the bench doesn't help your development. But that is just me. And if he beats out Micah this spring, the same for Micah. -
How can anyone not get a kick out of Beltin Bill Melton? My wife is a lawyer and has to do these extra educational things every year. A couple of years ago she went to a sports law seminar and the guest of honor was Melton. My wife, who can be as proper as can be, thought he was hysterical. I guess she talked to him after the event and Melton said he was a little nervous because he was the only non lawyer there. A few weeks later I went with her to the season ticketholder party and she introduces me to him. Don't get mad at the mispronounciations. Embrace them. This guy is a treasure. He proved it today.

QUOTE (scs787 @ Mar 11, 2015 -> 02:47 PM) Jeff Dickerson @ESPNChiBears 16m16 minutes ago Pace continues to insist the #Bears never explored trading Jay Cutler. Ian Rapoport @RapSheet 16m16 minutes ago On Jay Cutler: I spoke with as many QB-needy teams as I could to see if #Bears GM Ryan Pace tried to trade Cutler. None said he did. Mort said the same thing on Carmen and Silvy (or whatever show is on AM1000 around 11) this morning. Didn't even try to trade him. But Dan Bernstein's sources........... Does Bernstein ever get called out for his garbage or does it just go away?

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Mar 11, 2015 -> 02:45 PM) Sanchez and Johnson have upside, Bonifacio and Garcia are fast and can play all over the diamond. All of those players are lefties or switch hitters. These are all great attributes for a bench player that Beckham doesn't have. You are saying Leury Garcia is a better player than Gordon Beckham? Look at Sanchez's numbers last year. He's better than Gordon Beckham as a back up? Advanced stats will even say you are wrong. -

QUOTE (shysocks @ Mar 11, 2015 -> 02:00 PM) You're repeatedly missing when Eminor says his thoughts on Beckham are primarily guided by his whole bad career and not the 13 plate appearances this spring. Are you not reading it or are you just willfully ignoring it? And I am trying to get him to tell me why he isn't one of the top 25 players in the Sox camp. Why would someone like Sanchez or Leury Garcia or Saladino top him if it all has to do with past performance. -
This year's salary cap is $63 million. They are projecting next year's to be $66 million. When the new TV contracts kick in the season after, right now they are thinking $88-92 million. That will be interesting.

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Mar 11, 2015 -> 01:21 PM) I'm not asking for it both ways -- Duke, just LAST YEAR, had an entire season of elite dominance as a relief pitcher. Yes, there are question marks because one entire season isn't two seasons or three seasons or ten seasons, but that is so much better an indicator of performance than Gordon Beckham's one good half-season five years ago followed by 2500 plate appearances of garbage. My saying he isn't one of the top 25 players in camp is a result of THAT plus tiny sprinkling of "oh btw he has still looked like s*** in ST this year." If he went 13-13 with five homers, I'd be damn impressed, but you're right that it wouldn't make me forget about the massive, years long resume of bad that he has collected thusfar. And it shouldn't. When Beckham has a full season of top-five-at-his-position performance, I'll gladly support giving him a contract and a spot on the roster. I don't hate Gordon Beckham, but I do hate it when bad players soak up PT on my favorite team, especially when there are alternatives. Duke had an elite 38 innings. The other 20 were awful. When I got my BP they project him for a negative WAR. And the rest of the past 10 years has been godawful as well. And Beckham is a back up. You said he isn't a top 25. Is Sanchez better? If the answer is yes, tell me what you base it on? Bonafacio's career splits are worse than Beckham's. He has zero hits. If the current spring training numbers are really any kind of guide as to how this season is going to play out, the Sox are in trouble. Gillaspie, Melky, LaRoche...none of them are hitting. I'm not expecting Beckham to be an all star. A back up is a good role for him. It's March 11th. Guys don't even have 15 plate appearances. http://www.southsidesox.com/2015/3/4/81460...tistics-of-2014 -
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Feb 19, 2015 -> 01:24 PM) I tried renting my west loop place out for a month or so and after meeting about 4 prospective renters I decided to sell. What a mixed bag of sketchy people out there looking for apts. Being a landlord can be a real pain if you don't have the right tenant. If not, they will call you at all hours for the tiniest things, and if you don't get their rent, it takes forever to have them evicted. I was one for a few years. I had a guy who paid his entire year's rent on January 2nd, and would never bother with anything. When he left, the next one I picked was the exact opposite.

Mad Dog is hard to take for more than a minute or 2. KW doing his James Earl Jones impression should make an interesting contrast.

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Mar 11, 2015 -> 11:09 AM) Even when I wrote two sentence posts, you still don't read the whole thing. Shouldn't we all be worried about Duke? He's had a history of being terrible and on March 11th, he is terrible. Your hatred of anything Gordon Beckham is noted, but you can't have it both ways. If Beckham was 13-13 with 5 homers, you would say his numbers are meaningless. So saying he isn't one of the top 25 players in camp because he is 1-13 is ridiculous. -

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Mar 11, 2015 -> 11:02 AM) My statement was not referring exclusively to Spring Training. Gordon Beckham has a strong track record of being awful, so he needs to prove that he belongs on the 25 man. Melky does not. I know and the White Sox gave him a contract for $2.5 million to be a back up. He will be on the team. Care to bet? And if you are not referring to spring training, isn't that what this thread is all about? -

QUOTE (bmags @ Mar 11, 2015 -> 10:53 AM) D'oh, my brother just sent me that it's behind a paywall, sorry everyone. They ran stats and found that players that outperformed their zips projections in spring training went on to overperform in the season, same trend in underperforming. What about after 15 AB which is actually more than what we are talking about here? -

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Mar 11, 2015 -> 10:46 AM) Well, I mean it's easy to see why people might think otherwise -- because he doesn't look like one of the 25 best players in camp. I agree with you, though, that he'll probably be there anyway. Neither does Melky Cabrera at this point. Judging people by their numbers in spring training on March 11, is like predicting who wins a golf tournament based on the very first hole. -

Beckham is on the team. I don't know why anyone would think otherwise. His roster spot is not contested. -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 10, 2015 -> 03:47 PM) how little does $4 million matter in MLB anymore? https://twitter.com/AugustF_MLB/status/575358607908192256 The ultimate job. Someone paying you not to work.

QUOTE (Reddy @ Mar 10, 2015 -> 04:53 PM) That's really sad. He was hilarious. Sigh... don't get fat y'all. It always ends badly. You don't see many 300 lb. 80 year olds when you go out. Of course this guy was only 36.

QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Mar 11, 2015 -> 01:06 AM) Man I would love a grill section on the stove for during the winter months, not sure how well they actually work but it sounds great to me. My brother has one in his condo that he lives in 3 weeks a year about a block from my place. It is pretty sweet.

http://sfist.com/2015/03/07/terrible_human..._mariotti_h.php Reading this article, he is going back to the medium he said was dying 8 years ago when he went to AOL. It also says at one point he thought he was the one that got Obama elected. You cannot make this stuff up.

Brandon Marshall says he has 10 years left in his body. He probably will set the record for teams played for if he beats all the odds and makes it 10 more years.

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Mar 11, 2015 -> 01:35 AM) Interestingly they did fire Doug Collins. Were talking coaches not players right? And I never said that Thibs was the reason they didnt make the Championship. But for all of the success in the regular season the Bulls have had very limited success in the playoffs. If he is not the reason they haven't made it to the finals, how is addressing the non reason going to fix things? If the players aren't good enough with Thibs, they aren't going to be good enough with anyone you hire. Firing Thibs makes no sense as a basketball decision, yet many are trying to spin his imminent departure as a decent basketball decision. Besides, when they fired Collins, the same staff remained pretty much intact. Pippen and Grant got better because of experience and working with Al Vermeil on their bodies. I am pretty confident the Bulls would have won championships had Collins remained. It's laughable some actually think these guys will start playing 80 games a year once Thibs is gone and not "killing" them.
