Sox willing to deal Beckham in "right deal now"
Dick Allen replied to Heads22's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jul 23, 2014 -> 11:55 AM) hard to get proper value for a guy who can barely play 100 games a season Yes, but the Sox got zilch, although there wasn't much complaining about it at the time. -

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jul 23, 2014 -> 11:51 AM) More perspective, Carlos Quentin was injured when he was traded Carlos Quentin is injured when he is healthy. -
QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 23, 2014 -> 11:41 AM) Coop has had a few health issues. I hope he's okay. He has been trotting out to the mound a lot more often this year, so he's getting a little more exercise. It doesn't look like Coop ever opts for just some soup and a salad for lunch.

They used to put the team hotels in the media guide. I do think they stay at the W in Minneapolis these days.

QUOTE (scs787 @ Jul 23, 2014 -> 10:16 AM) Probably, but I guess it depends on the TWolves perception. One of their beat writers said they love McDermott, they could be of the belief that Niko is the top 5 pick everyone always brings up, and Taj fits real well next to Pekovic. And on the other end of things, they could see Bennett as trash......Wiggins is the best player, but that Bulls package might be better. History shows you take the best player, not the best package. I still think the report of the Bulls offer is BS, and they can't trade McDermott for 30 days anyways.

The Cubs are advertising Eddie Vedder singing Take Me Out to the Ballgame. I believe they are at rock bottom.

How come nobody wants to give Phegley another shot? His numbers have been climbing as well?

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 23, 2014 -> 09:21 AM) It's terrible logic because eventually there are people who hit successfully in the big leagues. And note how you edited what I said. An .800 OPS as a platoon player. You dropped the important part. He got off to a poor start this season and his OPS against righties is .913 and his OBP is .330. His walk rate isn't great against righties but it's 2.5 times what it is against lefties. We'd have to have a person making the lineups who understands that and doesn't regularly play him against LHP based on those splits, but his numbers suggest the potential that he could fill a major league role that the White Sox actually need to fill. I am pointing out others who suck who put up big numbers in Charlotte. Love Andy Wilkins all you want but he is 6 months older than Dayan Viciedo. What kind of numbers do you think Viciedo could put up in Charlotte? He isn't putting up an .800 OPS in Chicago. Sometimes you have to take AAA breakouts with a grain of salt.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 23, 2014 -> 09:13 AM) Similarly, anyone applying the logic "because players x and y put up solid numbers at AAA and struggled in the big leagues, player Z who is putting up numbers at AAA will also struggle in the big leagues" is also using poor logic. Andy Wilkins would not need to be a dominant hitter to be useful to the White Sox. If he could put up an .800 OPS as a DH/backup 1b who mainly plays against RHP and sits in exchange for someone like Davidson or a corner OF, while also being extremely cheap for the next 4 years, that player would absolutely fill a huge need for the white sox as currently constructed and it would save them from having to spend $10 million+ on a veteran DH to fill that role. That said, I don't know whether he can put up those kind of numbers even in a mostly platoon role, but there is no reason to ignore a possible payoff if he could. It's not poor logic. It shows that putting up big numbers in Charlotte is not necessarily a sign you are a good prospect. If Wilkins could put up an .800 OPS sure he would be valuable. But the odds of that happening aren't very high. This isn't a 21 or 22 or 24 year old. He will be 26. If he gets on base at .309 in AAA after a crazy hot streak, I don't see how that translates to anywhere near an .800 OPS at the major league level

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jul 23, 2014 -> 09:06 AM) That's placing a bet that may not pay out. Love is already a top player in the league, there is no guarantee Wiggins will ever reach that level. Sort of like when Jerry Krause was saying he saw Tyson Chandler as a future 20/10 guy when he traded a 20/10 guy to get him. Like you said, Wiggins may or may not be better than Love eventually, but considering Minnesota is going to lose Love anyway and Wiggins will be playing for rookie scale, I don't see how Minnesota turns down Cleveland if they really do offer him up in trade. Potentially he is IMO the best player that has been mentioned available for Love.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 23, 2014 -> 08:58 AM) Jeff Liefer comes to mind as a comp, although he was more touted as a high draft pick. Wilkins has never come close to even being in the Top 10 of one of the weakest farm systems in baseball. Yeah, I think the Wilkins love is fascinating, but reality says he will be 26 in less than 2 months and even with this hot streak, sports a .309 OBP in AAA. Phegley and Jordan Danks are also putting up big numbers and they couldn't do anything at the next level. Anyone actually thinking Wilkins is a really good prospect is thinking with their heart and not their head.

QUOTE (LDF @ Jul 22, 2014 -> 03:07 PM) plain and simple, they who are doing the shooting are cowards. It's gangs. There was a gang shooting today in Skokie. Yeah, Skokie.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jul 22, 2014 -> 03:05 PM) Yeah, I mean Greg shouldn't be such a woman about these things, but at the same time it's f***ed up that 80 people get shot and 14 killed in a 48 hour period. My cousin is a Chicago cop and threw out an email to the family that he had to take an FBI weapons course and was being sent to the West Side to fight the gangs, after years of being based in the Gold Coast. My brother fired back some statistics from Switzerland which is where he lives, where 11 people are murdered per year in the entire country.
-
I know they put the murders in statistics, but what about shootings? Without trying to be insensitive, in Chicago at least, most shootings are gang related, and it seems a good percentage don't die and many of the people who are killed are innocent bystanders. These gang members aren't exactly expert marksmen.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 22, 2014 -> 02:22 PM) Or maybe, just maybe, he could get a day off every month? I know, insanity. Darn shame we don't have any other 1b on the roster. So 1 game a month makes all the difference? I think they will see where he's at when that bridge is approached. If he and the team will benefit by him sitting out entirely, I'm sure he will sit.

QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Jul 22, 2014 -> 02:08 PM) White Sox wouldn't make an announcement? "Flowers is going on paternity leave and will be out a few games, someone will be called up" They like to call it a corresponding move.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jul 22, 2014 -> 02:09 PM) back injuries are a b**** I didn't know he had a back injury, but you are spot on with your assessment. I hurt my back several years ago and had a doctor tell me whatever I did, don't let anyone cut my back unless it was the last remaining option. Too many things can go wrong. So if it's a major issue, you are pretty much screwed either way.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 22, 2014 -> 02:02 PM) It's a shame the White Sox don't have anyone on the roster who can back up 1b. They're stuck with absolutely no choice other than to play him every single day until his body parts give up. That has to just be horrible to know. He has never played a 162 game season. Or anything close to it. Just like stretching out pitchers, you may have to give up some production and play him when he's tired or when you will really need him late in the season, he will not be prepared. There are plenty of guys who have shown they can play close to every game. I think Prince Fielder hadn't missed a game in several years before this year's neck injury. Just when you start doing it at 27 years old, you are starting a little behind the pack. He'll probably DH a little more in the next couple of months.

The Sox should sell it like the circus. Come see the catcher who can't catch.

QUOTE (TRU @ Jul 22, 2014 -> 01:37 PM) Baseball is the least physically demanding sport there is, there's no reason for a first baseman to ever be fatigued. Still, it's 6 months long with very few off days. Mentally it is grueling. If he isn't used to it, and how can he be, it is going to be tough for him at first IMO.

Anyone who thinks this team can catch Cleveland is crazy.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jul 22, 2014 -> 01:17 PM) You don't trade guys with team friendly contracts for the next 5 to 6 years. But if a good player is not too far from free agency and doesn't appear to be in your future budget, then you trade him when the iron's hot. If Headley showed his one year was definitely not a fluke, maybe SD talked big extension with him. I understand trading guys that are going to go away anyway, but a lot of guys like to stay where they are comfortable and years can make up for a million here or there per. It's hard to project performance 4 or 5 years from now. We would like to think Sale, Abreu, Q...will be just as effective as they are now. Maybe they will, maybe they won't. To me, if you want to strike while the iron is hot, it's time to add talent and try to go on a run while these guys are in their prime. Wasting a couple more years, not only closes your window with them at least a little bit, it may close it entirely. I understand stepping back for a season, but I don't think the White Sox are going to do it again next unless a catastrophic injury occurs to Sale or Abreu. You just can't afford to waste their big seasons because you never know how long it will last.

Ultimately, Boras' antics with Seay, Hill, Weaver, even young Alex, saved JR from spending a decent amount of money on players that were extremely mediocre or were about to be hurt.
-
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 22, 2014 -> 12:27 PM) Remember when Chase Headley was going to cost your entire minor league system? This is a pretty good example of why you try to trade guys coming off good years while you are relatively non-competitive. Trade Sale, trade Q, trade Abreu. Headley was a one year wonder apparently. But constantly trading good players just because you aren't going to win in a year or two usually means you will remain non-competitive for a lot longer than that.

Dunn's home/road splits this year are amazing. He's been terrible at home, in a park seemingly made for him. On the road, he's been as good as he's ever been. I wonder if he's feeling the heat from the stands. On TV it doesn't seem so bad, but if you go by the dugout, when he strikes out, some pretty vulgar things come out of people's mouths. It's too bad someone's life must be so pathetic they get their kicks out of popping off like some do.
