  1. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 19, 2014 -> 02:44 PM) Give Coop a pitching staff with Buehrle (almost 30 IP, low 20's K's, only 2 ER on the season), Sergio Santos, Santiago, Addison Reed and Gio Gonzalez and things will suddenly look quite different for Don Cooper. The Dodgers ran Belisario into the ground last year...he was the RH version of Matt Thornton for them. That's no mistake that the Cardinals and Royals both gave up on Cleto (pretty sure the Cardinals know what they're doing and what they have and don't have in pitchers). Downs looks like this year's version of Jeff Keppinger, a very odd signing in terms of looking at the "big picture" and why the hell we needed a reliable LH reliever when we didn't even have a "sure thing" in Jones or Lindstrom at closer. Veal...well, we all know how bad he was in 2013 and then again this year, and he was our second best LH option. Balta said Toronto would happily take Paulino for Buehrle.
  2. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 19, 2014 -> 03:53 PM) So they are out a million dollars more than if they had played a rookie the whole year. The very definition of low risk, high reward that everyone loves Theo for. What was the high reward with Paulino? Please use common sense. His career high in innings pitched was 139. What are the chances he blows through that after only making 7 starts in 2012 and 5 horrific minor league startd last season? And even if he was decent, what are the chances someone would give you something decent for him?
  3. QUOTE (Vance Law @ Apr 19, 2014 -> 03:53 PM) I was joking, but yes you're right. There is not a winning lottery ticket for every losing lottery ticket. I just wonder how much picking up a guy like Liriano and having him flourish is actually good scouting and how much of it is just good luck. It doesn't seem any one team does a whole lot better picking up these guys than others.
  4. QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Apr 19, 2014 -> 03:39 PM) That's a good one right there! But, on the other hand we went from a pitching strength (bright spot) last year to really struggling early this year. Especially the pen. What happened and tell me it ain't so Joe?. The good news is Sale, Q and Danks have been as good or better than we can hope. Johnson being a rookie is going to have his moments getting lit up. Paulino and the bullpen have been as Donald Trump would say, a total disaster. They traded their closer, and Jones got hurt, and the bullpen wasn't exactly lights out before that. Hahn has some work to do. At least so far, he is batting .000 with the veteran relievers he acquired unless you want to give him credit for Cleto.
  5. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 19, 2014 -> 03:25 PM) He's trying to poke fun at my assigning probability/percentage chances at different things. Apparently riding Cooper's butt isn't interesting enough (and he can't exactly say that Jimenez would have been a great signing either). Yet your thread that was designed to try to embarrass Marty and me comparing Paulino start by start to Jimenez after Paulino made it through his first start, was wisely deleted. As for Cooper, if hitters don't hit , it was Walker's and Manto's fault. If the pitching is last in the league and your bullpen can't throw a strike, why isn't that on the pitching coach? a
  6. QUOTE (Vance Law @ Apr 19, 2014 -> 03:24 PM) For every Francisco Liriano 2012 there's a Francisco Liriano 2013. No there is not.
  7. QUOTE (flavum @ Apr 19, 2014 -> 03:21 PM) Paulino on the DL with rotator cuff inflammation. It is actually ERA inflammation
  8. QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Apr 19, 2014 -> 02:43 PM) Re-emphasizes to me the Sox biggest organization need is pitching. We have zero top-of-the-rotation arms. Beck is a back-of-the-rotation arm. Danish is far away from helping. And that's about it in terms of likely ML starters in the organization. Can't miss on this draft pick. One good thing is they know they need more pitching, and have known it for a while. I was reading about their concern a year ago.
  9. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 19, 2014 -> 12:55 PM) They paid Paulino what they would pay for three rookie contracts in a bid to build some trade value, and to keep their kids off of the big club for as long as possible. You know, the stuff that gets Lord Theo's knob slobbered on by the same people who think that Sox management is crazy. Trade value and Paulino don't go in the same sentence. Ever. Let alone after he just missed a year. It was a miscalculation. Sometimes tying to be clever and picking up injured broken down players cheap works. Most of the time it does not.
  10. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 19, 2014 -> 12:40 PM) Right. The White Sox don't pay any attention to their budget at all. It has be something completely simple. Only lord Theo would sign pitchers to short deals in order to try to build value for them while holding back his own pitchers to save dollars in the future. What was I thinking. So they paid $2 million to Paulino to stop a soon to be 26 year old destined for middle relief's arb clock? You are reaching.
  11. QUOTE (scs787 @ Apr 19, 2014 -> 11:44 AM) Ah yes, the guy who has given up 13 runs and walked 10 in his first 3 starts. Paulino gave up 13 and 9 in his first 3 starts.....Could you imagine the meltdown here? Coop will fix him. Why isn't Cooper getting any crap for crap pitchers pitching crappy? The 2 previous hitting coaches did and we read about all the wonderful pitchers the Sox develop.
  12. QUOTE (ptatc @ Apr 19, 2014 -> 11:39 AM) They do. One of the starters is on the way out (injury or ineffectiveness) and the Sox have confidence that someone in the minors who had some MLB experience last year will step up. Rienzo is the first call. The second call will be Surkamp. The problem is neither are much better than Paulino. Maybe Rienzo can at least stay in the game long enough not to tax the beleaguered bullpen.
  13. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 19, 2014 -> 08:30 AM) Anderson should get 2014 and 2015 to see if he can stick full-time at SS. If it's still not working, they will have to try 2B/LF/CF. I would say he has a 37-39% chance of sticking at SS.
  14. QUOTE (GreatScott82 @ Apr 19, 2014 -> 08:42 AM) Bring up Reinzo and hope for the best. We are pretty thin in options at this point of the season. It seems to be the best option, and it probably isn't a good one. This is like shades of the early 2000s where the one starter is just a huge problem. It's one thing to count that spot as almost a guaranteed loss, but they need to find someone that will at least get them through the fifth or sixth inning.
  15. QUOTE (GreatScott82 @ Apr 19, 2014 -> 08:18 AM) I agree... I thought this whole Paulino experiment was a bit odd to me. Perhaps Coop thought he could have pulled off a miracle? Regardless, theirs scouts really botched this one. Time to move on. I didn't have a problem with the signing per se, it just some of the expectations on this board. Not only did they expect him to be good after basically missing a year, many thought he would be better than he has ever been.
  16. It boggled my mind then, it boggles my mind now, how anyone could have thought this guy was going to be effective was beyond me. He made 5 minor league starts last year and they were very similar to his results this season. He was still coming off a serious injury and was going to be rusty any way you slice it. Finally, he wasn't very good to begin with.
  17. QUOTE (Soxfest @ Apr 18, 2014 -> 09:15 PM) PK since his 1st AB as a PH has done nothing. This is such a wasted use of a roster spot. Keep sucking DeAza It hasn't affected winning or losing. They have hardly faced lefties. It just would be someone else who rarely plays or if he did, posters would be wondering why.
  18. As Ron Washington said, that's the way baseball go.
  19. The problem is thr Charlotte staff really doesn't feature anyone you could say would definitely be significantly better than Paulino.
  20. QUOTE (Soxfest @ Apr 18, 2014 -> 08:24 PM) Sox offense really cooled since Avi went down........DeAza automatic out. Abreu and Semien have been automatic outs as well.
  21. QUOTE (Baron @ Apr 18, 2014 -> 08:21 PM) The real problem is he puts the game out of reach each start. There is a few innings he can get through and then he gives up a bomb. And he puts a huge load on the bullpen, making a weakness even weaker. He's bad. Send him to Charlotte with the rest of the flash in the pans that the Sox signed, and maybe he finds something. If not, at least we won't have to watch him.
  22. QUOTE (Soxfest @ Apr 18, 2014 -> 08:16 PM) All bulls*** aside no way he gets another start next week. I'm thinking you are right. If he pitched 5 innings and gave up 5 or 6, i would think they would continue to trot him out there. But this is just too much.
  23. QUOTE (Big Hurtin @ Apr 18, 2014 -> 08:15 PM) Who was the last Sox starter who was this bad consistently? I honestly can't remember. Axe was awful the last couple of months last year. I don't know if he was this bad, and he certainly didn't steal $2 million like Paulino apparently has.
  24. QUOTE (Feeky Magee @ Apr 18, 2014 -> 08:12 PM) Haha, was that defensive indifference in the 3rd inning? Runner on 3rd, he will get the steal.
  25. I think everyone who b****ed at Ventura for having Leury Garcia pitch instead of Paulino should apologize.
