GT: Sox vs. Tigers...The Final Countdown Continues
Dick Allen replied to LittleHurt05's topic in 2012 Season in Review
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 11, 2012 -> 07:32 PM) I think Youk would give Boston a nice discount if tey wanted him back and Valentine wasn't there. They way Youk has hit away from USCF, if I were him and wanted to play baseball beyond next season, I'm thinking White Sox for whatever they will pay me. -

QUOTE (Cerbaho-WG @ Sep 11, 2012 -> 07:25 PM) Thanks for your opinion. Check Dan Johnson's career major league stats and tell me his a right handed pitcher killer. These numbers included the time he actually was a pretty useful every day player. I understand you want to use a 33 year olds AAA stats as a barometer, but if you do that, the Sox should consider bringing back Josh Fields. This is the major leagues. Dan Johnson sucks. -
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Sep 11, 2012 -> 05:30 PM) BY OPS, he's 16th out of 20 qualified now, just ahead of Darwin Barney and behind Kelly Johnson at 667. By WAR, Barney's actually 2nd in the majors leagues to Cano, ahead of the Laser Light Show in Boston...and Beckham's 18th, ahead of only the Weeks brothers in Milwaukee and Oakland. So 16th and 18th with 30 teams. Seems pretty average to me. Far from officially a lost cause. A tag you placed on him.

Its not like Dan Johnson mashes RHP. If you look at his career splits, its about as equal as you would get vs. lefties and righties. -
QUOTE (Jake @ Sep 11, 2012 -> 12:30 PM) I don't know how long he has to be adequate for me to believe it will last at this point. He's the king of extended decent runs in the midst of pure s***. Manto had suggested in an article earlier this year that Gordon gets by at times with pure talent, but his poor mechanics that were not fixed at the lower levels end up catching up to him. Going to be hard to know if what we see is talent manifesting itself (temporary success) or the permanent ironing-out of mechanical problems (long term success). Manto was quoted a couple months ago as saying Beckhams mechanics are cleaned up enough to get him through a 600 AB season.

If the Sox lose the next three (which I doubt) they still would be tied with Detroit even after losing 10 of 11 head to head. Truly amazing.
-
QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Sep 11, 2012 -> 12:18 PM) I sure liked what I saw for Gordon Monday night. This team can do it! In his last 22 games, Beckham is hitting .304 with an .876 OPS. Not bad for an official lost cause.

QUOTE (Cerbaho-WG @ Sep 10, 2012 -> 08:51 PM) No, this makes too much sense. Splits are for p*****s. Shouldn't you check the splits? Johnson is virtually the same vs. lefties and righties in his career. Also, Viciedo up until tonight has hit Porcello well. -

QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Sep 10, 2012 -> 08:45 PM) That's not what I said. I said he was LUCKY AS HELL to have that sparkling ERA. Most people here, at the time, didn't think Quintana was LUCKY AS HELL to be putting up the numbers he did. They thought he was actually a dominant pitcher. I kept referring to him as getting by with smoke and mirrors, and people gave me s*** for being pessimistic about him. And.....poof, smoke thinning and mirrors getting cloudy. Well pat yourself on the back for predicting a White Sox player will suck. BTW, the smoke is getting a little thicker and the mirrors a little clearer tonight. 6 innings 1 run. -

QUOTE (rafacosta @ Sep 10, 2012 -> 08:42 PM) the botton 3 hitters in our lineup are all RHs. you are asking to do nothing agst Porcello. They really could use Olmedo tonight. Who should be playing? -

QUOTE (Soxfest @ Sep 9, 2012 -> 05:21 PM) That may be...........whoever is doing KC advanced scounting needs s*** canned! I couldn't argue with you there, although today KC would have been shutout if the Sox could have scored in 9 innings. I don't know why Guthrie looks like a Cy Young/MVP against the Sox every time out. He's doing better in KC, but I think his numbers wouldn't look so good if you threw out his starts against the Sox. -

QUOTE (Soxfest @ Sep 9, 2012 -> 05:10 PM) Sox were last or 2nd to last in scouting spending in MLB in a article I read 2 years ago. Maybe scouting amateur talent, but not advanced scouting. I bet every team spends about the same amount. Maybe their scouts aren't as good, I have no idea, but they have reports on everyone. -

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 9, 2012 -> 05:08 PM) I'm not sure anyone minded the use of the bullpen today. Eventually someone was going to lose it. And the guy who did would get the mental midget posts (although I don't mind it directed at Myers), and the posts how someone would have managed the bullpen much better than it was managed. -

According to this site, releivers the Sox have that shouldn't be used in tight situations: Jones Thornton Humber Meyers Reed Considering many on this site insist on pitchers being pulled the first hint of trouble, who do you suggest they use? Can Veal pitch 75 innings the rest of the season? -

QUOTE (Soxfest @ Sep 9, 2012 -> 04:59 PM) Sox do not spend s*** on scouting never have. I bet they spend as much on advanced scouts as any team in baseball. -

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 9, 2012 -> 04:58 PM) I don't mind that Olmedo isn't the most talented, I don't mind that he's a bad player, I don't mind that he's AAAA fodder or whatever term you want to apply. When you're the 26th guy on a 25 man roster, or something like that...the one thing you do is hustle. Every play. You have to work harder than everyone else to stay on that roster. If you make a mistake, it better be a hustle mistake. That's what hits me as pathetic today. I'd have wanted him benched in the 9th. What makes it ironic is the reason he was in the game today. -

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Sep 9, 2012 -> 01:47 AM) I bolded the ones I remember the most or best/worst 4/16 BALT 4-1 lead into the 8th, 4-2 into the 9th, Santiago's first blown save, Zach Stewart loses in extras 4/24 OAK tied 0-0 into the 8th, Matt Thornton 4/25 OAK Sox tied it 2-2 in the 9th, Hector with his 2nd blown save in the 14th, started that inning with a 4-2 lead 5/2 CLE tied 3-3 going into the 8th, Ohman 5/4 DET leading 4-2 into the 7th, 4-3 into the 9th, Thornton 5/7 CLE tied 2-2 into the bottom of the 8th, Thornton 5/13 KCR Thornton leading 1-0 into 7th, roof caves in and Sox go on to lose 9-1 5/15 DET Peavy leading and coasting 6-0 into the top of the 6th, Peavy/Ohman 6/2 SEA leading 8-7 into the bottom of the 8th, Crain/Reed 6/15 LAD leading 5-1 into the 6th, Sale over Kershaw, tied going into bottom of 8th, Crain/Thornton 6/17 LAD leading 1-0 into the bottom of the 9th, Quintana start I think, Thornton/Reed 6/22 MILW tied 0-0 into the 10th, Jesse Crain 7/16 BOS tied 1-1 into the bottom of the 8th, A-Gone homer off Leyson Septimo 7/19 BOS leading 1-0 into the bottom of the 9th, Quintana again, Thornton and Reed collapse, Cody Ross walk off 7/30 MINN tied 6-6 going into the bottom of the 9th, AJ throws the ball down the RF line, Myers 8/4 LAA tied 5-5 going into the bottom of the 10th, Thornton 8/11 OAK leading 7-6 going into the 8th, Thornton 8/13 TOR tied 2-2 into the 11th, Septimo 8/19 KCR tied 2-2 into the bottom of the 8th, Crain 9/7 KCR Sox blow numerous scoring opportunities, Reed gives up the 2 run bomb to Hollywood Cain On the plus side, of our 18 blown saves, 3rd in the majors, only 11 of them have turned into losses. Jones and Reed both blew saves against the Royals but we managed to win 9-8 in the Greg775 Friday Night Frustration/Jubilation game The amazing 9-8 comeback victory against the Mariners where we were leading big-time, started the 9th with Humber/Veal and then Reed gave up the lead only to rally the next inning. 3-2 over the Cubs, Thornton with the blown save. 5-3 over the Indians, Sale with his only relief appearance of the season, and a blown save. 7-4 over the Mariners, Crain 8-6 over the Brewers, Ohman The team is in first place. They were expected to be terrible. Even you put a stake in their coffin the first week of the season and said they wouldn't be good for a long time. Now you spend either spend your time researching their losses or have made notes highlighting their losses. Either way, unless you love to be miserable, don't you have anything more enjoyable to do? I think you picked this up in Iowa. I was at the Iowa/Iowa St. game yesterday and the family behind me made your negativity child's play. The father was done by halftime as his screaming at the Hawkeyes caused him to lose his voice. He did say James Morris was having the worst game he's ever seen a LB have. He's seen good LB work as Morris only had 12 tackles, a fumble recovery and an INT. The second half, his wife took over. See was b****ing at Iowa letting a kick returner return the ball to the 23. Why do the spend the money and the time if they are not going to enjoy themselves? -

Iowa has the dreaded combination of a QB who's not very accurate and takes forever getting rid of the ball, and receivers who have a tough time getting open and a tough time just catching a ball thrown right to them. -
Reed is a rookie. Rookies usually struggle. At the beginning of the year, the re-build crowd wanted Reed closing and were actually up in arms when he wasn't. Now that same crowd has already turned on the Sox #2 prospect. I think all the "rebuilders" should consider ever endorse a total rebuild ever again. You simply do not have the patience for it if you give up on prospects after less than a season. Here are some rookie stats a surefire HOFer put up when he was 25. I realize it's apples and oranges as a lot of these numbers were put up as a starter not the reliever he became, but certainly if he was a White Sox prospect putting up these numbers, he would be deemed to be worthless. I'm also not saying Reed will have nearly the success of this guy. All I'm saying is rookies and young players struggle. Sometimes you have to be patient. Here's Mariano Riviera's rookie numbers: 5.51 ERA in 67 innings with 51 k's and 30 walks.

QUOTE (fathom @ Sep 7, 2012 -> 08:26 PM) Jose Lopez 0-3 with 3 men LOB Who would you have hitting 2nd? Its a home game so its unfortunate Youkilis is gone tonight. Why couldn't they induce labor when the Sox were on the road ?
