9/16 White Sox at Twins
Dick Allen replied to Swingandalongonetoleft's topic in 2012 Season in Review
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Sep 16, 2012 -> 01:35 PM) This is where Ventura consistently overworking Peavy in the first half of the season is having some pretty obvious negative consequences. Location on his fastball just not quite pinpoint. Left another one out over the plate against Parmelee, too. Got away with it. Sox fans complain the starters are overworked and also complain when Ventura uses any reliever other than Veal. What is he supposed to do? -
QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Sep 14, 2012 -> 06:28 AM) I don't follow the Marlins on daily basis but just heard on Mike and Mike interview with Buster Olney that Miami brass is not happy with Ozzie whatsoever. Olney said you can't rule out Ozzie getting canned. Crazy mother cow. I can't think of one reason they would be happy with him. The team stinks. He's pissed of a large part of their fanbase. He's throwing players under the bus and they are trying to attract fans. He's getting back to all things Ozzie. The team he left instantly became better after his departure after dropping payroll. He IMO, is the biggest phony in sports in the sense when he puts a uniform on he thinks he's the most important piece of the puzzle.Basically, if he stopped trying to be what he thinks everyone wants him to be, crazy Ozzie, and just tried to be a manager, he'd be fine. I just don't know if that's possible. The Marlins don't like it, but he's been the same act since winning the WS.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Sep 14, 2012 -> 06:58 AM) I never said that the other White Sox played well. They deserve blame too. I just don't see why Peavy gets a break just because he struck out 9 Tigers. He couldn't even finish the 6th inning and he blew a two-run lead. I'm sorry if my expectations are higher for him than everyone else. God forbid he pitches a gem, and we don't have to depend on a shaky bullpen. Isn't that what top starters do? Peavy gets a break? He never gets a break from Sox fans. He goes through a surgery no other pitcher has ever gone through and Sox fans are pissed at him for giving them 200 innings of 3.30 ERA pitching. How come you don't have a CSINAA considering his 0-3 record and 6.00 ERA against Detroit? Coming into this season, if you thought Peavy should pitch like an ace after what he's been through, you didn't have a lot of company. Its pretty clear his stuff isn't quite what it was in SD, but he's still done well. The entire Sox roster for the most part has stunk up the joint vs. Detroit. Don't just pick on one guy.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Sep 13, 2012 -> 03:09 PM) Then why is everyone disagreeing with my thread title for? I disagree that salary is irrelevant. It has hamstrung the Sox from signing other players, so the closer he produces to his value, the better. He has had an outstanding season and has been a big part of the Sox success. Except for when he has faced Detroit, which is frustrating as hell. And for someone who hypes up his own attitude & desire, how about you beat your teams biggest rival when it matters? Don't just keep the Sox offense in the game, how about you once win the game despite the offense? If the entire argument is playing or pitching well against the Tigers, there are a lot more White Sox other than Peavy you can vent your frustrations.

GAME. THREAD. 9/13 Detroit @ White Sox

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 13, 2012 -> 05:37 PM) If it's raining lightly but about to rain harder, makes much more sense to delay the game so that you don't burn both starters in 1.5 innings. Sale is 0-3 with a 6.00 ERA vs. Detroit. Verlander has owned the White Sox. Starting this game and a long delay might not be a bad idea. -
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Sep 13, 2012 -> 02:26 PM) And in his other 5 starts he averaged 7.2 IP with 1.4 ER per start, including a Sunday night lockdown of the 1st place White Sox. I never said I expected a pitcher to be perfect or to never lose a start. I just ask that my highest paid pitcher, who is hyped up as a competitior that brings 120% every start, has an ace-like performance in a must-win game once in a while. Not just a nearly quality start. No one has said he's an ace. His salary is irrelevant. He had major surgery. Most on this board, even the people complaining about him would have to admit he's exceeded their expectations.
-
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Sep 13, 2012 -> 12:47 PM) What do those starts have to do with anything? I want Jake Peavy to once, in a big game, shut the opponent down. Just once. Verlander is supposedly an ace. His team is in second place. Getting lit up like J4L on a Friday night certainly isn't ace-like.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Sep 13, 2012 -> 11:30 AM) 07/20 vs. CWS: 8 IP, 4 H, 2 BB, 2 ER, 6 K 09/02 vs. CWS: 8 IP, 4 H, 2 BB, 1 ER, 11 K He's already done it twice this year, not even looking at his 2011 when he carried his team. And 3 runs isn't bad. Not finishing the 6th inning is a problem IMO. Is it too much to ask Peavy to pitch like that once in a big game? Or I guess it's OK if he has 9 strikeouts and tries really hard. Conveniently you left off his recent starts against KC and the Angels where he allowed 14 runs in 11.2 innings. That, plus his over 5.50 postseason ERA confirms by Soxtalk standards he's not an ace. Even last year, in 4 postseason starts he went 20 innings and gave up 12 runs which is 4 starts of 5 innings 3 runs, exactly what everyone is so all over Peavy about. Certainly not ace-like. JVINAA

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Sep 13, 2012 -> 11:04 AM) Comparing Peavy to Verlander, well done. I'm not, I just said no one here says Peavy is an ace considering the surgery he had. Verlander is considered an ace, but the things pointed out that supposedly prove Peavy was never an ace seems very similar to things that could be pointed out about Verlander. So 3 runs tonight, JVINAA.
-
Let's preface this by saying, I don't think anyone here claims post surgery, Jake Peavy is an ace, but considering his recent starts and his career 5.57 post season ERA, if Justin Verlander gives up 3 runs tonight, its obvious using Soxtalk standards, JVINNA.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Sep 13, 2012 -> 07:37 AM) BP and doing it in game conditions against a guy with pinpoint command in Fister are two quite different things. All the hitters lay down 3-5 bunts typically at the beginning of BP. Not even sure if YOUK has been doing that or not. Plus he had a three day layoff over the weekend and has been a hurt a lot, it's highly doubtful he's taking extra bunting practice. Keep in mind a few White Sox pitchers who never bunt or even hit, successfully laid down bunts this season and past seasons. Its really not that difficult. I disagree with having him bunt, but to think he's incapable because he doesn't have sac bunts in his past is wrong. Considering the pitch he struck out on, it doesn't appear Youk had much of a chance if he was hitting away anyway. Also it was against Benoit not Fister. Also when Jim Thome was with the Sox and they had the shift on for him, I remember many complaints "why doesn't Thome bunt" to foil the shift. Funny how many of those same people change their tunes. It didn't matter anyway. Youkilis was destined to fan.
-
Youkilis is batting second. Moving runners is part of his job. How does everyone know he hasn't been working on bunting in BP?
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 12, 2012 -> 05:04 PM) Not necessarily. He's changed his eye position by squaring around from where he's used to seeing the ball to a different spot. Especially in the case of a guy who is very used to seeing a pitch from a certain, and let's say "Unique" perspective, changing the eye location will have a big impact on whether or not he thinks its a strike. Whether it's a pitch he thought he wanted to bunt at and whether it was a pitch he'd have taken/swung at normally are 2 different things. That pitch was middle in, just below the waist, which actually happens to be in one of Youk's hot zones if you believe Yahoo. Heck, if the pitcher thoguht he was swinging, he probably wouldn't have thrown that pitch. Guys not used to bunting usually expand their strikezones to get a bunt down. You can say he would have swung at it and hit a home run, I think its more likely he would have taken it for strike 2. While I disagree with Ventura having him bunt, its not like Youkilis is on a roll or anything. The pitch was borderline anyway, one Stone said could have been called either way. Chances are with the way he's been going if he swung at it, he wouldn't have hit it fair and if he did, not very hard. Youk was 3 for his last 33 coming into that AB.
-
QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Sep 12, 2012 -> 04:57 PM) He had a bunt on for strike two... Yes and he pulled away thinking it was a ball. If he were swinging, he would have taken the pitch for strike 2.
-
While having him bunt is most likely a mistake and a nice topic for a radio talk show to attract callers who love to complain about everything, Youkilis attempting to bunt made zero difference. He never swings at the first pitch anyway, check any scouting report, so even if he was swinging away, he would have taken it for a strike, that was strike 1. The next pitch he took for a strike which he didn't think was a strike, that's strike 2 and he swung at a ball 3 feet out of the strikezone for strike 3.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Sep 12, 2012 -> 11:32 AM) The biggest surprise from this ACC move: The U is a top 50 academic school Can't you tell by listening to Devin Hester? -
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Aug 22, 2012 -> 01:55 PM) I understand the particulars of the situation and can't blame him, but there is one thing that bothered me. Thinking back to everything that Mark ever said or other people said about him, chasing the money from a mediocre team who is a 50/50 bet to trade you doesn't sound like him at all. it was always about the baseball, about his family, about being comfortable, and this decision was the complete opposite. He doesn't owe Sox fans a damn thing, just like the fans don't owe him, but I just thought it was very surprising and a bit hypocritical. He stated he was willing to play for the Sox for less. They did not make him any offer. To think it's hypocritical is confusing to me because there was nothing he turned down. They told him to leave. Also, rewinding 9 months, the bad team was supposed to be the Sox, the contender, Miami. It didn't quite work out that way. Even if Buerhle left for the money, no one should blame him. He didn't. He went where they offered him a job. Sure the Sox would have taken him back at some price point, but he was told to take Miami's money and never given an offer. If the choice is $58 million for 4 years to pitch in Miami vs. nothing, I believe everyone on this board would take the $58 million.

It doesn't look like Cooper can fix Liriano. Liriano loses money each time he steps on the mound. Its amazing how dominant he can be at times, and how AA he looks a lot of the other time.

QUOTE (flavum @ Sep 12, 2012 -> 10:04 AM) Here's the Rays schedule... http://www.tampabay.com/blogs/rays/content..._medium=twitter 6 of their 19 off days are in August. WTF? Including the All Star break, 11 days off in the month and a half between the middle of July and end of August. They should be properly rested for the stretch run.

QUOTE (flavum @ Sep 12, 2012 -> 09:14 AM) MLB releases the schedule at noon (ct) today. They're going back to 19 division games, so it could be 10 games at Comerica next year. I seriously hate 76 division games. Especially since the Sox can't seem to beat them. If they don't have players that can beat these teams, then they have to change the players. Sept. 12th. First place 2 game lead. I'll take it every year.
