QUOTE (flavum @ Mar 24, 2011 -> 07:28 PM) Marquez is starting Saturday. Maybe if he impresses he'll move ahead of Humber. I hope not. Marquez is garbage. Humber was a top prospect, had surgery and now has a new pitch. While I don't think he'll contend for the Cy Young, I think as a fifth starter for a month, he should do OK. If the Sox are .500 in his starts, they are ahead of the game.
  2. QUOTE (joeynach @ Mar 23, 2011 -> 10:31 PM) Its tough becuase as a private organization the Sox dont have to disclose what they do with the money or where it goes. From the $210M in revenue sure some goes to payroll, and we know that figure, but how much goes to sox employees and benefits, how much goes to stadium operations, how much goes to scouting, drafting, player development, how much goes to their lease, etc. Also, operating income doesnt really do much, at least not anything than more an increase in revenue would anyway. The sox have said ime and time again they run their organization to break even and win the world series. Every dollar they take in they spend on the team and organization, so we would have a higher payroll or budget for the draft with higher revenue regardless of profit. Having a $26M operating income means that the team basically found some way to save some money or make some new money that wasnt there before and tips the balance of money in vs money in a positive way. Assuming the sox do what they always do they will find a way to invest that money into the ballclub, stadium, or a special project of some sort. JR already put that thought to rest earlier this offseason when he said profits from earlier years could be used to cover the "loss" this year if the team doesn't draw. Amazing a team that "breaks even" every year is able to do this. Never mind the fact JR also considered going cheap. What about those previous profits that were supposedly put back into the team? Again as I have said often, I don't hold making a profit against JR and his group. What I do hold against him is the constant over budget out of money, break even BS we get every year.
  3. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 23, 2011 -> 05:18 PM) AJ is going to be difficult trade if he bombs because his deal balloons a bit next year. Plus he is still a 5 and 10 guy.
  4. You can't go by Forbes numbers. They say the Sox make at least $20 million in profit for the past 6 or 7 seasons. Listen to the White Sox. They break even every year.
  5. QUOTE (knightni @ Mar 21, 2011 -> 12:49 PM) I wonder if Perez would accept a minor league deal... He's the kind of pitcher that Cooper can work with. He was left handed starter version of Mike MacDougal. Now he throws 85 and still can't throw a strike.
  6. QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Mar 21, 2011 -> 10:50 AM) I like JP, his enthusiasm, his determination, his tenacity on the mound, but frankly this guy is a mess. Rehabbing, especially this injury which is unique, isn't an exact science. Maybe he should have said something sooner, but maybe a lot of soreness is his norm or he can put up with a lot more pain than the average guy. You really are walking a tightrope rehabbing, especially with a guy who wants to earn his check like Peavy. You have to push it somewhat, or it will take forever to get back to normal if ever, but you can't overdue it. As long as this is one of the setbacks the medical team suggested would most likely happen, he's still on a great track, and this actually might be a blessing as now Ozzie knows moving forward, he has to be the voice of reason when handling Peavy, and I really don't mean that as a knock on Jake. The guy wants to pitch. If its something else, I hope JR paid his insurance premiums.
  7. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 21, 2011 -> 07:35 AM) That was also 25 years ago. Medicine has changed a lot since Rick pitched. He actually said this about another hurt pitcher a couple of years ago. It may be and hopefully is exactly what is being described, but as far as I know, Peavy hasn't had a full exam of the rotator cuff, and even a real complete exam doesn't guarantee the problem is uncovered. If you remember Lorenzo Barcelo, the supposed big prize of the White Flag trade, he was complaining about incredible soreness. The Sox doctors examined him and couldn't find anything out of the ordinary. KW basically called him a p****. Eventually he had both shoulder and elbow surgery, and never pitched again.
  8. Hopefully Peavy's rotator cuff tendonitis is all that his discomfort really is. I remember Rick Sutcliffe once saying when the medical staff is uncertain of exactly what is causing your pain, you have tendonitis. I just hope its nothing that could be far more serious.
  9. QUOTE (ChrisLikesBaseball @ Mar 20, 2011 -> 09:49 PM) I think that Jose Valentin would be the best candidate for the current logo/colors. I'm not sure anyone else has had defined facial hair since they changed to the black and white. How can you forget...................Dirty 30.
  10. QUOTE (jphat007 @ Mar 20, 2011 -> 05:27 PM) I dont know who on here said Josh Kinney was going to make the team, but you are incorrect. haha. Its certainly not looking good for Josh.
  11. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 20, 2011 -> 12:16 PM) I think it is pretty clear. The Sox were willing to trade him for a middle reliever/set up man. The Diamondbacks have put crap in front of him. Its obvious to me that both organizations felt Allen isn't that good, for whatever reason. He has a big issue with contact.
  12. QUOTE (WilliamTell @ Mar 20, 2011 -> 01:36 PM) Good. Didn't like that guy anyway. But if this was a trade I'm sure somehow, someway the Twins got the better end of it. Waiver claim.
  13. QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Mar 18, 2011 -> 11:42 PM) I don't know many companies that earn enough income from referral links that would be anything other than a self-proprietor, or a small co-operative. But the companies do employ people who pay taxes on just about everything they purchase(except Amazon). If they close up shop and go elsewhere, the people go elsewhere or collect unemployment.
  14. The Robin Yount seems more Gorman Thomas to me.
  15. Stone was on the other day saying Morel is a lock at 3B because A. Even if he doesn't hit, the Sox have plenty of offense and B. Danks and Buehrle throw cutters and Peavy is a sinkerballer. It is more important to have some defense at 3B.
  16. Going by stats the first couple weeks of spring training to figure what's going to happen during the season usually doesn't work out. If the Sox think Morel is the answer, but then change their minds because of 21 early spring training ABs, they are in panic mode. I don't think anything has changed. Ozzie isn't trying to push Morel, he's trying to keep Teahen's confidence high. Morel doesn't need pushing. He's a rookie who probably is pressing. 21 ABs the first 2 weeks of spring training means zilch.
  17. QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Mar 13, 2011 -> 12:47 AM) I understand that Millhouse is supposed to be better than Bridge, but this is all in-theory talk. I'd love for Millions to realize all that potential but I'm not sold on him hitting any grooves off our bench. I hated Bridge more than anything until he came in for Beckham. I'm still amazed by some of those balls he hit that first week. Been a fan ever since and I like him on our bench. To be someone who was impressed with a guy who had 22 hits the entire season and was 11 for his last 70 with 29 ks, its not all-theory talk you will be impressed with Lastings Milledge at the plate. In fact, you'll probably be impressed with Teahen's glove at 3B. He can string 3 or 4 good games together.
  18. QUOTE (knightni @ Mar 12, 2011 -> 06:24 PM) I meant... when he first started getting playing time. He got the majority of his playing time when Beckham got hurt and had a .437 OPS.
  19. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Mar 12, 2011 -> 06:21 PM) I find this interesting: Lillibridge career minor league slash stats: .268/.348/.409/.758 Milledge career major league slash stats: .269/.328/.394/.723 Interesting, but irrelevent, especially consideing Milledge did most of his minor league work as an under 24 year old, is younger than Lillibridge and Brent has spent the last 4 seasons basically in AAA.
  20. QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Mar 12, 2011 -> 05:09 PM) I love Brent's skill set off the bench. How is having a guy who can play 6 positions, with pop and +speed so terrible? I wouldn't mind having him on the bench for 5 years. Unless The Mill is faster than The Bridge, why take him? If nothing else The Bridge is an excellent late-inning pinch runner for our slow guys. You love guys who can't hit sour apples and are shaky in the field? The Mill isn't slow, but he can't run with The Bridge. He's fast enough as a pinch runner and at least you could use The Mill to pinch hit and get an occassional start. He hits lefties well and Teahen hits righties well. The only thing the Bridge hits is the bench after an at bat. I like the names the Mill and the Bridge.
  21. QUOTE (knightni @ Mar 11, 2011 -> 08:07 PM) You're looking at the entire season. Look at June and July when he got more playing time. http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/...ar=2010&t=b He held an average over .270 until mid September. http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/...p;t=b&year= Look at the stats and look at your second sentence. He played more in August and September. His stats as a starter were .171 avg. 203 OBP .234 SLG and he fanned 29 times in 76 AB. Thats like having a pitcher in your line up.
  22. QUOTE (greg775 @ Mar 12, 2011 -> 03:38 PM) Wow, Dick Allen. You usually aren't this vicious. You must really dislike Lilly the ballplayer. I remember last year he was pretty darn good at the plate. I have a sneaky feeling both may make the team. Is that possible. If it's one or the other I think Lilly makes it. Don't Oz and Kenny both kind of have a hard on for Lillibridge? .248 OBP. 36 strikeouts in 98 ABs. 3 walks, that's pretty darn good at the plate? His OBP was actually lower than his career .254 OBP with a career .194 batting average. He's brutal. Both Oz and Kenny need a few bottles of Viagra if they are going to become semi erect thinking about Lillibridge. Ozzie in particular has never thought too highly of his approach at the plate. There's a far greater needed for someone who can pinch hit off the bench than a guy who can be the 3rd string SS. That's why Milledge makes far more sense.
  23. QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Mar 12, 2011 -> 02:20 PM) I agree that Lillibridge is a valuable utility player. If he's so valuable, KW will be able to get something for him that he can send to the minors for a while.
  24. QUOTE (Melissa1334 @ Mar 12, 2011 -> 07:44 AM) yea and he sucks defensively in the infield. he had trouble making the throw from 2nd lol thats like saying teahen can play 3rd. is listed as being able to play 3rd but he clearly cant. ill take milledge, easily He clearly isn't going to help you win. I just think people freak out because he's out of options thinking therefore, he has to make the team. What's the difference if he's playing in Charlotte or Rochester? Its time to move on. He's never going to start. The sudden affection for him is puzzling. He's at best 3rd string right now, who may eventually if all goes right, make his way up to a 2nd string guy. They are a dime a dozen, especially guys who don't hit for any average or power and strike out a ton.
  25. Considering the hoops people have to jump through to buy a MLB franchise and then be approved for membership, its amazing guys like this get through and a guy like Cuban has no chance.
