  1. QUOTE (fathom @ May 30, 2008 -> 01:16 PM) I got the chance to watch Crow pitch for Mizzou today against Ole Miss on ESPNU. He was filthy! His fastball was solid, as it was in the 92 mph range the whole game. However, his slider was absolutely amazing. He's as good of a college pitcher I've seen in a long time. On the other hand, former Braves player Brian Jordan was the announcer. Holy cow, he was bad. He sounded like Cleveland from "Family Guy". I'll continue to give updates from the regionals. Be careful judging sliders in college. I read an article where the college baseball has much bigger seams. Hansen with Boston was supposed to be filthy, but when he went to the professional ball, his slider lost a lot of bite. That said, if he's going to have a great slider in the pros, its going to be nasty in college as well. It seems the college ball is the college pitcher's aluminum bat.
  2. As bad as Swisher's been, his OBP this season is still 13 points higher than Orlando Cabrera's career OBP. Swisher, unless he starts hitting some home runs, should bat 8th 9th or 1st.
  3. Gammons was just discussing Wilder on Baseball Tonight. He basically said he was singing to the feds and its probably going to implicate another organization. He also thinks it will ultimately lead to an international draft.
  4. Most everyone was shocked when Collins was fired in 1989. There were all kinds of outrageous rumors which obviously weren't true or he wouldn't be back. He'll piss some of the players off, but so what. He'll at least have them in the right direction when he goes. Think of it, the Bulls, the Pistons, even Washington became a lot better. He also was responsible for Horace Grant being a Bull. Krause wanted Joe Wolf.
  5. 64% of teams in first place as of Memorial Day have made the playoffs. Its nice having a shutdown bullpen again.
  6. QUOTE (klaus kinski @ May 28, 2008 -> 12:50 PM) Way to go JOE He makes so many plays like this, yet next time he makes an error a few posters will tell you what number it is, and what he's on pace for.
  7. Cabrera has some things to say: "If it happens again, I will call again," Cabrera said. "I don't have to do it with other teams because they always had my back. They don't want to do it here, I can take care of my own business. If you have a problem with what I did, come to me and say something. Don't go to the media to send a message, because he didn't send any message." "I never had anybody complain about that stuff," said Cabrera, who won his second Gold Glove Award last season with the Los Angeles Angels. "If there was a major-league player who tells me he's not selfish, he's lying. Everyone is selfish about numbers, because that's the only thing people cannot lie about. That's it. It's not a big deal. I don't know who's trying to make this a big deal. Maybe it's the media, maybe it's the manager. And nobody is complaining about that stuff. Nobody cares about that."
  8. QUOTE (joesaiditstrue @ May 28, 2008 -> 06:01 AM) since probably 70-75% (or more) baseball fans are ignorant about the game, it's players, stats other than balls/strikes/homeruns, they need to take the ASG ballot out of the hands of the fans when a game like this actually serves quite a large meaning ultimately, letting the general public determine the talent that goes into that game is ludicrous. Yet Jerry Owens is on the ballot and Quentin is not. I think Garvey is the only write-in candidate ever to be elected. Don't worry, if Quentin keeps this up he will be on the ballot. Its silly anyway that this game, an exibition, should mean home field advantage for the WS. It should be which league has the better interleague record.
  9. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ May 27, 2008 -> 02:04 PM) Now THAT'S a generalization. Majority of NBA playes = black, so they smoke weed. Gotya. I'd say the MAJORITY of NBA players don't smoke weed, but that's just me. You are the one mentioning race. I know mostly white people and know quite a few who smoke weed. There was a SI article or some other magazine a couple of years ago that estimated a figure way higher (no pun intended) than what it would take to make a majority smoked weed. It was Charles Oakley stating 60 % of the NBA smoked weed. Josh Howard popped off about his toking because he thought it was no big deal because of the amount of players who do.
  10. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 27, 2008 -> 02:56 PM) Another reason that drafting Beasley might not be a bad idea... Why, because he smokes weed and likes a cocktail? The majority of players in the NBA like to do the same things.
  11. QUOTE (BobDylan @ May 26, 2008 -> 11:59 PM) Because he's big? If he helps the clubhouse, he's worth keeping around for the long haul this year. (If he's hitting jack at the ASB, start limiting his AB's.) But there is no way he should bat anywhere above the 6 slot right now. If he doesn't help the clubhouse like people say, I'd hope KW is calling teams and feeling out interest. I don't care if Thome does manage to turn it around, anyway. It's time to get younger. I think, regardless, KW has to get rid of one of Thome/Konerko by the trade deadline. Get some speed in the line-up. Even if it's not at the top. Thome and Konerko are going nowhere. They both have no trade protection. Thome would only interest a couple of teams, and they are teams he most likely wouldn't be interested in moving to. Konerko would probably have to go to Arizona or LA and they probably don't think they need him now. I'm sure both will start hitting pretty well soon.
  12. If Ramirez has no idea how to handle a hit and run, why is he being asked to execute one? And why doesn't anyone know that he doesn't know you aren't supposed to try and hit one 15 miles in that situation?
  13. Dotel is a strikeout pitcher, and that's what the Sox desperately need .
  14. Fields also didn't play today, I would suppose its to take it easy after his injury. So its not like you would be bringing in someone 100% healthy.
  15. QUOTE (fathom @ May 26, 2008 -> 08:30 PM) Who would you rather have in the Sox lineup....PK or Fields? Konerko. Where you going to play Fields?
  16. Hawk would have been OK with the call either way there he says. Why don't I believe it.
  17. QUOTE (southsideirish71 @ May 26, 2008 -> 08:26 PM) Its time to bring fields up, I could care less if he Ks, the multimillion dollar thuds that are checking the backs of their cards K as well. At least he can hit lefties, and give us some power. This is sad. He's hitting .231 with a .286 OBP with 2 homers and fanning 1 out of 3 ABs vs. AAA lefties this year.
  18. Alexei Ramirez has more homers this year than Delmon Young, Victor Martinez and Joe Mauer combined.
  19. QUOTE (shawnhillegas @ May 26, 2008 -> 08:19 PM) He reminds me so much of late 90's Ugeth Urbina. Fastball that moves on a horizontal plane - totally unpredictable. 2001-3 Dotel was about as unhittable as anyone while he was toiling as a set-up man in Houston. They had Lidge, Dotel and Billy Wagner.
  20. QUOTE (shawnhillegas @ May 26, 2008 -> 07:17 PM) Not to sound ill-informed, but what do you speak of with Eddings? The infamous dropped 3rd with AJ? Is there more? It seems about 90% of the time the Sox get a huge break from an umpire, Eddings happens to be the umpire.
  21. For 1 inning or so, Dotel is as nasty as they come.
  22. QUOTE (fathom @ May 26, 2008 -> 07:13 PM) Why can't Doug Eddings do all of our games? I know. Its like JR gave him a huge loan, and told him he didn't have to pay it back.
  23. QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ May 26, 2008 -> 07:12 PM) No walks by Dotel. Please. If he stays 6 inches off the plate, he should get the call.
  24. QUOTE (shawnhillegas @ May 26, 2008 -> 07:11 PM) They were pretty good pitches. Not that its an excuse not to swing though. Where those pitches were located, if he swung, nothing good for the White Sox would have happened. Chances are he would miss. I suppose he may have been able to foul the second one off to stay alive.
  25. Those looked more than several inches off the plate.
