  1. QUOTE(max power @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 05:06 PM) Well it was also before the tigers (potentially) unloaded 6 guys. So potentially the Sox can maintain 29th or even move up to 28th. Not very encouraging considering the lack of contribution they got out of a system that was once ranked #1 only 7 years ago.
  2. QUOTE(iamshack @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 05:03 PM) See this second part of that article: White Sox eyeing Andruw Jones The Chicago White Sox are interested in free-agent center fielder Andruw Jones. The addition of Jones, a 10-time Gold Glove Award winner, would further strengthen the White Sox -- who recently added 2007 American League Gold Glove shortstop Orlando Cabrera -- defensively and give the team five players -- Jones, Cabrera, Jim Thome, Jermaine Dye and Paul Konerko -- who averaged 89 RBIs and 250 total bases apiece in 2007. The Dodgers were going to offer Jones a contract until Boras threw out a few numbers. They didn't bother. I am on record as saying the White Sox signing Andruw Jones would be the most shocking signing in team history.
  3. QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 05:03 PM) At least we won't have the worst system anymore.... I read were BA was going to name the Sox 29th out of 30th in minor league system rankings. That's before they unloaded Carter.
  4. QUOTE(fathom @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 05:01 PM) OUCH! Kudos to the Tigers...and this honestly should make KW consider becoming a seller more than a buyer. The Sox are more f***ed now than they were 20 minutes ago. The Sox would have to do a lot of improving to compete with the revamped Detroit roster if true.
  5. According to Rotoworld, Miggy and Willis are headed to Detroit for Maybin, Miller and 4 prospects.
  6. If acquired and signed long-term, he may give Frank Thomas a run for his money as greatest hitter in team history. This would be a coup.
  7. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 02:01 PM) When KW says Quentin will play some RF and DH, to me that means he is the starting LF and will also play RF and DH to keep him out there as often as possible. I don't think KW is going to put all that much on a guy with 395 career ABs who is currently recovering from surgery, and coming off pretty much a lost season on the major league level. Counting on Quentin and Owens and Richar and Fields and Floyd and Danks to come up big for you certainly isn't in line with "going for it."
  8. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 01:40 PM) Its not as if they are without an owner - the Tribune Company still owns them. And since they are spending what is basically someone else's money, and making the team look higher profile doing it, its not surprise they are spending like crazy. Yes. Its just like when Bill Veeck actually signed some free agents when he thought he had the team sold to DeBartolo. Ron LeFlore was one, I think Jim Essian was another, but LeFlore was the big one then.
  9. If Jones ever signed with the White Sox, it would be the most shocking roster addition in team history.
  10. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 01:50 PM) Who is making him out to be the second coming? Or saying he will be a stud in 2008? People just think he's a significant upgrade over Owens or Pods. Do you disagree? If he plays like he did in 2007 he won't be. I think he'll be a pretty good player. I just don't know if he'll be all that good in 2008. KW said he's going to play some RF and DH so even he hasn't penciled him in as the everyday LF. Owens will get time in LF, and probably will see some time in CF after Rowand busts up his face crashing into something.
  11. I like the Quentin trade, but how can anyone expect him to be a stud in 2008? He was bad last year and is coming off surgery, now people around here think he's the second coming.
  12. I don't know what the fascination is with Burke. He isn't very good.
  13. Besides the back issue, what really hurts Crede's trade value is his agent. Teams know there is no chance at an extension before he hits free agency. The Gordon idea seems like a good one, its guys in Crede's similar situation or guys who are not anything but mediocre at best is what you will get for Crede right now.
  14. QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Dec 3, 2007 -> 11:00 PM) They are close. I'm not sure they are close enough that Miguel would turn down an offer from whatever team he goes to because of Ozzie and the Sox. And who is to say a trade for Cabrera won't happen unless he can sign a long term deal. Ozzie got Garcia to sign a below market deal. He probably could get Cabrera to sign something halfway reasonable if the White Sox traded for him. I'm not a fan of Ozzie, but I've mentioned in PMs to people that the one thing that makes me tolerate him as a manager was the potential of him bringing in Cabrera. Its still a longshot, and wherever he goes, he will probably sign a sweet deal with that team, because nobody is going to want to give up what they will have to give up for 2 seasons of him. On the other hand, if he's in shape and has a huge year and doesn't want to sign, you probably could get back pretty close to what you gave up for him next winter.
  15. QUOTE(ptatc @ Dec 3, 2007 -> 10:55 PM) If that's the case then he should be ready or very close to it depending on the doc's protocol. Especially since it was his non-throwing shoulder. I'm not too familiar with the injury. How and/or will it affect his swing? I would guess at the very least it would zap some strength that would need to be built up over time. Could he be at full strength by opening day?
  16. QUOTE(ptatc @ Dec 3, 2007 -> 10:46 PM) could this be the genesis of the Konerko to the D'Backs scenario. We trade for Cabrera then trade Konerko to the D'Backs to clear the money. I hope so. This is almost like trading for a 24 year old Frank Thomas who can play the OF. Konerko has been great for the Sox, but the next 5 years there's no question who would be better in my mind. And the bonus if you trade Konerko to Arizona is you trade him to a contender and you trade him to the city where he lives, so its not doing him wrong which is something you have to worry about when you start dealing guys who take "hometown discounts."
  17. Ozzie was quoted in the Florida paper about how Cabrera wants to play for him if he can't play for the Marlins. He also reported Cabrera has been working out with a personal trainer everyday and has dropped 15 lbs. since the end of the season. http://www.palmbeachpost.com/marlins/conte...1204marlins.htm
  18. The reason for the concern with the middle infield is most assume Uribe is gone, and Ozuna at SS is not something Ozzie likes. They need to get someone who can play SS as a back-up.
  19. QUOTE(Greg The Bull Luzinski @ Dec 3, 2007 -> 07:15 PM) Fathom, No faith in Gavin Floyd? /green ... I have trouble seeing KW spending on anything but bullpen the rest of the off season. Dumping Cred and Uribe for marginal prospects in probably all that I can see happening. I bet they sign one of the veterans recovering from injury. They cannot expect to win with a back end of the rotation Floyd and Danks and/or Gonzalez. The bullpen would be gassed by June.
  20. QUOTE(fathom @ Dec 3, 2007 -> 07:13 PM) Let's hope not, cause we'd be lucky to come in 4th place in the AL Central. People seem to forget just how shaky our 3/4/5 is in our starting rotation. And they forget that Quentin struggled in the majors in 2007. He was hurt, had surgery and may not be 100% for spring training. Its why I feel KW definitely will now get a CF. I like the Quentin trade, but I wouldn't be surprised if it takes him a while to put up good numbers. It would be great if he could come in and put up the numbers a lot think he's capable of right away, but I think that's unlikely. That's why I think Rogers' article makes some sense as far as a platoon out in LF. The other concern for Quentin is he seems to have been hurt for a lot of the past several years. Hopefully he can overcome this.
  21. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Dec 3, 2007 -> 05:05 PM) Well they've had success with our prospects before, Young the main one, and Cunningham kept on hitting last season. Maybe they think Carter has a higher potential to produce, while Quentin could take a while to rehab and get back to where he was at the end of 2006, hence they decided to make a move now. It also gives them the option to maybe trade Jackson in the future years to an AL team as a DH, if he doesn't improve his fielding at 1B, of course Carter ain't the best with the glove either. Do you think the fact that they train together so they get a better look at the other team's entire organization has anything to do with the numerous trades between the 2 teams? I wonder if the Sox will be doing a lot of dealing with the Dodgers in a few years.
  22. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Dec 3, 2007 -> 12:58 PM) Is it even worth noting again that Owens's OBP was actually approaching respectable for a leadoff hitter during his second callup, and his patience in the big leagues improved each month he was up? It would be worth noting if it were true. But his July was a.333 OBP and he followed it up in August with a .302 OBP. If anything, unless Quentin is going to be part of a deal for Cabrera, this almost guarantees Owens isn't starting.
  23. QUOTE(soxfaninpa @ Dec 3, 2007 -> 12:12 PM) I was afraid they were going to trade Chris Carter. There goes my favorite sox prospect. At least its not for Coco Crisp. I'm not very familiar with Quentin offhand, but I hate to see Carter go. Quentin looked good in 2006, brutal in 2007 and had surgery. He could be a great pick-up.
  24. QUOTE(BlackBetsy @ Dec 2, 2007 -> 03:15 PM) It's not just Kenny Williams' problem. The Sox have signed three significant free agents during the entirety of the modern free agency period: (1) Carlton Fisk (2) Tom Seaver (3) Albert Belle All of the other free agents have been second tier / Type B guys like Jermaine Dye, Jaime Navarro, Tadahito Iguchi, Bo Jackson, Danny Tartabull, Julio Franco...etc. And, actually, the Sox have done pretty well with those second tier guys. The problem is that the second tier is so bad right now, that a Type A guy is going to have to be the priority. Fukudome, Fukudome, Fukudome. Seaver wasn't a free agent. He was a compensation pick for a lost free agent. Floyd Bannister was a top guy they did get, but you are right, its been a long time since they have signed one of the top guys.
  25. As good as Hughes may be, Santana probably is the best pitcher in baseball. Money seems to be no object for the Yankees, I really don't know why they even hesitate. I think the Twins planted the Santana to Boston is a done deal rumor to get the Yankees to increase their offer. I actually like Coco Crisp. I hope KW gets him and another OF, hopefully Fukodome.
