Sox looking at Fukudome, Bay, not Rowand
QUOTE(BearSox @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 08:07 PM) If KW is serious about getting players who will have a .350+ OBP and not strike out a ton, I think Fukudome is the target then. The Cubs have supposedly told Fukudome's agent they will outbid anybody.

Miguel Cabrera to the Tigers
QUOTE(RockRaines @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 05:36 PM) How did he get his clock cleaned exactly? We dont even know if we were even in on the bidding, it could have been fodder by Fla. We also dont even have close to the top tier talent that Detroit just gave away. You cant buy a 50 dollar steak with 10 bucks, no matter how great you think you are. The only way he got his clock cleaned is by having one of the greatest hitters in the game, only 24, go to a division rival. You're right, he couldn't offer the package Detroit offered because he doesn't have it. Too bad it took him and the rest of the organization so long to figure out there was a problem drafting and developing players.

Miguel Cabrera to the Tigers
What's Florida's payroll going to be next season? It already was lower than their revenue sharing check.

Miguel Cabrera to the Tigers
QUOTE(daa84 @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 05:33 PM) the certainly upgraded their lineup...and now that inge will probably be traded that is gonna drive the market down for crede as well....too bad dontrelle is gonna get lit up in the AL and the tigers after trading for renteria and cabrera have no farm system...oh well...granderson polanco cabrera sheffield maggs guillen renteria pudge jones damn The problem is the White Sox have no farm system either, and a ton of holes on the major league level. KW is just going to have to move on and try to put together a solid team and hope the breaks go the White Sox way in 2008. Right now, talent-wise there is no comparision between Detroit and the White Sox.

Miguel Cabrera to the Tigers
QUOTE(RockRaines @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 05:26 PM) it was on the radio and someone said it was a blurb on espn hd, maybe we thought we had him, then the Tigers upped their initial deal to block it. I think we sign Andruw Jones in the next few hours though. It actually was part of the article that started this thread. I have a feeling that "announcement" has been canceled. It wouldn't surprise me Detroit saw the White Sox about to get Cabrera so they upped their offer. Its a risk, but a 24 year old who hits like that is going to be around awhile.

Miguel Cabrera to the Tigers
QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 05:23 PM) [/b] We were a 70ish million dollar team in 05, that had to flip guys like Lee to have financial flexibility to get multiple players. We are now a 100+ million dollar team. Please dont compare the two teams, or use the reasoning well it worked in 05 so it will work in 08. Times are different, and we are not a mid market team. I will state that the sum of the parts we would of given up, will never account the for impact that Cabrera will have in his lifetime. You can build a championship around Cabrera. We won in 05 on outstanding pitching, and getting hot with our bats in the postseason. With the current team and the addition of Cabrera to a potent Detroit offense. I dont see how we compete and get into the playoffs. You might as well just rip it apart and start over. The big success the White Sox had in 2005 was they beat the crap out of their division. Its not that easy anymore.

Miguel Cabrera to the Tigers
QUOTE(iamshack @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 05:20 PM) Yeah, I saw that one. I guess I just don't buy this rumor anymore than the other. Mlb.com is reputable, but if the deal was all but finalized this afternoon, why would they plant an article about the White Sox at 5 pm? It doesn't add up... Gammons has it on the winter meetings blog on espn.com.

Miguel Cabrera to the Tigers
QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 05:13 PM) Verlander Willis Rogers Bonderman Robertson Only 1 guy on that list had an ERA under 4.4 last year, and that was Verlander. That supposedly dominant staff sure struggled one hell of a lot last year outside of Verlander. And the White Sox will be relying on what? You really have to be crazy to think unless KW throws a ton of money into the White Sox right now, he can compete with them. I think Konerko is a better 1B than Guillen, but the Tigers have the edge at every other position if this deal goes down.

Miguel Cabrera to the Tigers
QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 05:09 PM) Because that's so much better and more intimidating than the lineups the Yankees have trotted out the past 5 years. The Yankees have made the playoffs how many years in a row? Considering its rare a wild card team comes from the Central Divison and Cleveland appears to only be getting better, KW has a whole lot of work to do to catch up, and he's pretty strapped with the payroll.

Miguel Cabrera to the Tigers
QUOTE(max power @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 05:06 PM) Well it was also before the tigers (potentially) unloaded 6 guys. So potentially the Sox can maintain 29th or even move up to 28th. Not very encouraging considering the lack of contribution they got out of a system that was once ranked #1 only 7 years ago.

Miguel Cabrera to the Tigers
QUOTE(iamshack @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 05:03 PM) See this second part of that article: White Sox eyeing Andruw Jones The Chicago White Sox are interested in free-agent center fielder Andruw Jones. The addition of Jones, a 10-time Gold Glove Award winner, would further strengthen the White Sox -- who recently added 2007 American League Gold Glove shortstop Orlando Cabrera -- defensively and give the team five players -- Jones, Cabrera, Jim Thome, Jermaine Dye and Paul Konerko -- who averaged 89 RBIs and 250 total bases apiece in 2007. The Dodgers were going to offer Jones a contract until Boras threw out a few numbers. They didn't bother. I am on record as saying the White Sox signing Andruw Jones would be the most shocking signing in team history.

Miguel Cabrera to the Tigers
QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 05:03 PM) At least we won't have the worst system anymore.... I read were BA was going to name the Sox 29th out of 30th in minor league system rankings. That's before they unloaded Carter.

Miguel Cabrera to the Tigers
QUOTE(fathom @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 05:01 PM) OUCH! Kudos to the Tigers...and this honestly should make KW consider becoming a seller more than a buyer. The Sox are more f***ed now than they were 20 minutes ago. The Sox would have to do a lot of improving to compete with the revamped Detroit roster if true.
-
Miguel Cabrera to the Tigers
According to Rotoworld, Miggy and Willis are headed to Detroit for Maybin, Miller and 4 prospects.
-
Miguel Cabrera to the Tigers
If acquired and signed long-term, he may give Frank Thomas a run for his money as greatest hitter in team history. This would be a coup.

QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 02:01 PM) When KW says Quentin will play some RF and DH, to me that means he is the starting LF and will also play RF and DH to keep him out there as often as possible. I don't think KW is going to put all that much on a guy with 395 career ABs who is currently recovering from surgery, and coming off pretty much a lost season on the major league level. Counting on Quentin and Owens and Richar and Fields and Floyd and Danks to come up big for you certainly isn't in line with "going for it."

Rowand not ruling out return to South Side
QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 01:40 PM) Its not as if they are without an owner - the Tribune Company still owns them. And since they are spending what is basically someone else's money, and making the team look higher profile doing it, its not surprise they are spending like crazy. Yes. Its just like when Bill Veeck actually signed some free agents when he thought he had the team sold to DeBartolo. Ron LeFlore was one, I think Jim Essian was another, but LeFlore was the big one then.
-
Andruw Jones
If Jones ever signed with the White Sox, it would be the most shocking roster addition in team history.

QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 01:50 PM) Who is making him out to be the second coming? Or saying he will be a stud in 2008? People just think he's a significant upgrade over Owens or Pods. Do you disagree? If he plays like he did in 2007 he won't be. I think he'll be a pretty good player. I just don't know if he'll be all that good in 2008. KW said he's going to play some RF and DH so even he hasn't penciled him in as the everyday LF. Owens will get time in LF, and probably will see some time in CF after Rowand busts up his face crashing into something.
-
Decision made
I like the Quentin trade, but how can anyone expect him to be a stud in 2008? He was bad last year and is coming off surgery, now people around here think he's the second coming.

The Astros are considering dealing Chris Burke to the White Sox
I don't know what the fascination is with Burke. He isn't very good.

Decision made
Besides the back issue, what really hurts Crede's trade value is his agent. Teams know there is no chance at an extension before he hits free agency. The Gordon idea seems like a good one, its guys in Crede's similar situation or guys who are not anything but mediocre at best is what you will get for Crede right now.

Sox are Miggy dark horse.
QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Dec 3, 2007 -> 11:00 PM) They are close. I'm not sure they are close enough that Miguel would turn down an offer from whatever team he goes to because of Ozzie and the Sox. And who is to say a trade for Cabrera won't happen unless he can sign a long term deal. Ozzie got Garcia to sign a below market deal. He probably could get Cabrera to sign something halfway reasonable if the White Sox traded for him. I'm not a fan of Ozzie, but I've mentioned in PMs to people that the one thing that makes me tolerate him as a manager was the potential of him bringing in Cabrera. Its still a longshot, and wherever he goes, he will probably sign a sweet deal with that team, because nobody is going to want to give up what they will have to give up for 2 seasons of him. On the other hand, if he's in shape and has a huge year and doesn't want to sign, you probably could get back pretty close to what you gave up for him next winter.

Sox Acquire Carlos Quentin for Chris Carter; DFA Heath Phillips
QUOTE(ptatc @ Dec 3, 2007 -> 10:55 PM) If that's the case then he should be ready or very close to it depending on the doc's protocol. Especially since it was his non-throwing shoulder. I'm not too familiar with the injury. How and/or will it affect his swing? I would guess at the very least it would zap some strength that would need to be built up over time. Could he be at full strength by opening day?

Sox are Miggy dark horse.
QUOTE(ptatc @ Dec 3, 2007 -> 10:46 PM) could this be the genesis of the Konerko to the D'Backs scenario. We trade for Cabrera then trade Konerko to the D'Backs to clear the money. I hope so. This is almost like trading for a 24 year old Frank Thomas who can play the OF. Konerko has been great for the Sox, but the next 5 years there's no question who would be better in my mind. And the bonus if you trade Konerko to Arizona is you trade him to a contender and you trade him to the city where he lives, so its not doing him wrong which is something you have to worry about when you start dealing guys who take "hometown discounts."
