Gamethread sunday vs sawx 8/14/05
The new message was that the storm would hit within 15 minutes and last about 30 minutes. It is not raining there right now.

QUOTE(Chisoxmatt @ Aug 14, 2005 -> 04:21 PM) we have like 4 off days the rest of the year and no more games vs. the redsox. So no, we dont. I'm pretty sure he meant there is still a lot of time today to wait out the rain.

A new update from Hawk, they are waiting for another cell to pass, and after that he says it looks good. They will get this in. The only concern would be blowing out the bullpen.

I keep hearing Mike Sweeney may be going to the Angels for prospects. That would make that lineup pretty scary especially against the White Sox.

QUOTE(Queen Prawn @ Aug 14, 2005 -> 04:09 PM) How do you think they will wait before calling it (which would suck considering)? Considering it is a sellout and no more trips to Boston for the White Sox, they are going to wait until the cows come home or Joe Crede advancing a runner, whichever comes first. That's 38000 tickets the Red Sox would have to reimburse or find seats for.

QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 14, 2005 -> 03:51 PM) Pedro thru 7 innings with a no-hitter. I'm already getting a great investment on my mlb.com purchase. Hows the picture with that? Is it a little blury on a full screen like the preview or is it like watching tv?

QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 14, 2005 -> 03:39 PM) Have they gone back to Hawk for an update? Might as well get this game in today if we can, we have a good shot at winning it. The update was a recording of the previous one, but the instacam shows them pulling the tarp off the infield.

QUOTE(ScottPodRulez22 @ Aug 14, 2005 -> 02:20 PM) They might because the red sox need to fly to detriot and we need to fly to chicago. If there's severe weather in the area, they aren't flying anywhere.

Nightengale's Griffey/ Sox update
QUOTE(JUGGERNAUT @ Aug 14, 2005 -> 09:51 AM) First off I've never claimed a number. If you are saying 100's then that makes sense given the average contract value of a MLB player. Especially considering how often players move from the 40 man roster to the ml's & vice versa in the course of a season. All I've stated is that they first call GM's around the league to determine interest before requesting ML waivers on a player. Whereas you've argued they don't & they use ML waiver requests to do that work for them. I likewise doubt the confidentiality of these waiver transactions. Newsday reports that Ken Griffey Jr., Mike Piazza and Tom Glavine have all cleared waivers. In addition they report Pedro, Beltran, Benson, Mientkiewicz, Zambrano, Graves, Cairo, & Castro, Posada, Chacon, Womack, Lieter, Rodriquez, Franklin, Escalona, Small, & Flaherty cleared. I don't think they left any stone uncovered there so that amounts to 19 players on 2 40 man rosters. Most? No. Some. So much for the confidentiality of ML waivers. Heavy contracts missing from Newsday's NY teams ML waiver list are: Floyd, A-Rod, Jeter, Matzui, Giambi, Sheffield, Martinez, Johnson, Pavano, Wright, Mussina, & Williams. You can only have 7 guys on waivers at a time I believe. It takes a few weeks for everyone to go through. Most players get placed on waivers. Stark reported it, Gammons reported it, Phillips, who used to be a GM reported it. Just accept it.

Nightengale's Griffey/ Sox update
QUOTE(OZZ-fest 2004 @ Aug 14, 2005 -> 08:55 AM) Now that Podsednik has injured his leg and may have to go on the DL, does Kenny pull the trigger for Griffey? Kenny wants Griffey, the teams agreed on a trade. Cincinnatti's owner does not want to get rid of him.

White Sox vs Red Sox - 8/13/05
QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Aug 13, 2005 -> 08:43 PM) Well does everyone remember the Ozzie "you dont play the game the right way you dont play with me speech" where he said if you dont run out a fly ball or play solid you will be on the bench no matter who you are. Meanwhile, Uribe tries to park every single pitch into the seats. Ozuna kicks the ball all over. And now in the OF decides to give up on a ball that he thinks is foul yet is fair. If he was a man of his word he would of marched out and removed Ozuna. Then of course we pan to Ozuna and Rowand and Ozuna is laughing about it. HA HA HA I FOCKED UP AGAIN. HA HA HA That was BS from the moment he said it. Ozzie used to jog to first everytime he hit a routine grounder. Hawk even called him out on it back in the day.

White Sox vs Red Sox - 8/13/05
QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Aug 13, 2005 -> 08:32 PM) Maybe the White Sox should just stick to drafting OF'ers, 'cause it seems like that's the only thing they do well. Carlos Lee and Maggs Ordonez (both minor league FA findings), Aaron Rowand, Jeremy Reed (whose having a decent -- not great -- rookie season), and hopefully Sweeney, Anderson, and Young. Then, after you've completed the draft of 50 OFers, trade the ones that succeed for pitching. The most successful one, Ordonez, they exposed to the Rule 5 draft. I wasn't a huge fan of the Schueler regime. I was doing an Irish Jig when he resigned, and I'm not even Irish.

White Sox vs Red Sox - 8/13/05
QUOTE(ottawa_sox @ Aug 13, 2005 -> 08:26 PM) McCarthy has rediscovered his preferred 12/6 arm slot. His pitches were a little flat for his ineffective starts. His recent performances are much more indicative of his abilities. I still think he will be a very effective pitcher when all is said and done. His spring training was not a fluke. He was dominant. When he is more over the top, his pitches are much harder to pick up. 12/6 augments his height. He may be, and I hope you are right. I just think quickman is right. Hope this guy is a #4-5 guy, and if he is more than that its a bonus. We have been burned the last 12 years or so waiting for these guys to be anything more than that.

QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Aug 13, 2005 -> 08:21 PM) Rauch, in his minor league career, averaged 2.77 BB/9, and 8.55 K/9. McCarthy, going into this season, averaged 1.54 BB/9, and 10.40 K/9. I assume that the BB number went up a little bit, and the K/9 is about the same. Still, he's about two K's better than Rauch, and about one walk better than Rauch. I'm also extremely happy with his recent success. He'll have his ERA below four if he has another start like this one. And I'm also extremely pissed that Joe Blanton is pitching well with Oakland, while Royce Ring is, well... Robby Alomar? Too bad the k/bb ratio didn't mean s*** when McCarthy was getting shelled with the Sox.

White Sox vs Red Sox - 8/13/05
QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Aug 13, 2005 -> 08:13 PM) It's not just the K's. McCarthy has also had much better control than Rauch's minor league career, too. Agreed, he can get injured at any time. I'd hope not, however -- he doesn't throw in the high-90s, he doesn't (or not that I've heard of) throw a slider, and his deliverly looks good, too. The thing McCarthy has to fix is his HR/9. But I can deal with that, so long as it's the Brad Radke 'only solo shots 'cause you got such damn good control'. He'll probably learn a new pitch in Spring Training. Rauch didn't walk that many. 16 in 57innings at Bristol in 1999. 33 in 110 innings at Winston Salem in 2000 and 16 in 56 innings at Birminham in 2000. McCarthy is striking guys out in the minors that he didn't in the majors on pitches just off the plate. Then he grooves one and its gone. He has been much better recently at Charlotte, and whatever he is doing now, hopefully he can do on the major league level his next opportunity.

White Sox vs Red Sox - 8/13/05
QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Aug 13, 2005 -> 08:00 PM) Rauch got injured, and never struck out over nine per nine IP at a level above AA. He also never had the control that McCarthy had. BTW, Fathom, McCarthy must be doing something right to have struck out almost 120 in about 105 IP... That's because he got hurt when he went to AAA. He pitched 28 innings and had 27k in 2001 at Charlotte injured. His totals at A and AA were impressive, and there is no guarantee McCarthy doesn't get hurt. McCarthy is a good prospect, but at this point that is all he is.

QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 13, 2005 -> 07:57 PM) I worry that Pods won't be the same for the rest of the year. They are saying this is an injury he got while playing CF against Oakland. He has been hurt for some time.

White Sox vs Red Sox - 8/13/05
QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Aug 13, 2005 -> 07:54 PM) BTW -- McCarthy's line tonight (in a rain shortened game): 7 IP, 7 Ks, 3 Hs, 0 R, 0 BBs. His ERA is down to 4.18. Quick saying that he's just gonna be a #4-#5 is one of the dumbest things I've read on this site in a while. What were Jon Rauch's numbers back in 2000, when he was considered the top prospect in baseball. The Sox and Expos/Nationals would have loved for him to be a #4 or #5 starter.
