Ken Griffey Jr.
If the White Sox want to win a WS they have to seriously think about getting a big bat. One of the team's problems in the WS would be that the DH plays one of the biggest roles on their offense. With no DH being used in NL parks, they would be at a severe disadvantage. I know they played well without the DH in interleague play, but the WS could be a different story. I don't know if Griffey is the guy, but the contract plus his injury history may make his price reasonable.

Thomas, Buehrle give Maggs warm reception
QUOTE(Steff @ Jul 19, 2005 -> 08:36 AM) Don't see any quotes from Mark and Frank calling their competetor the "best they ever played with..." :rolly I like this approach by Ozzie.. "Because there are more important things with this ballclub than talking about Magglio. When it's time to talk about Magglio, I will. "It's hard for me to come here after the way we played and all of a sudden the first thing is [about] Magglio Ordonez. "It's not fair for our players, it's not fair for me. … I want to talk about my team first before I talk about Magglio." Hope Paul is taking notes this morning.. Ozzie already talked about Magglio. I don't think even he would have much to add to what he had to say.

THE WAVE
I was sitting next to 2 couples last night. One was a married couple and the other the married couple set up on a blind date. It was hysterical. The guy who was set up, was singing at the top of his lungs every canned song played last night. The girl who he was set up with, who was pretty damn hot, would just kind of laugh. Then the wave started. He was doing it, throwing his hands above his head, screaming. After that the guy and the husband went to the bathroom or something. The 2 women where there and started talking, the wife apologized to her friend. Her friend said "It wasn't that bad until he started doing the wave", This is a true story. Doing the wave is not cool.

KW on the score
QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jul 19, 2005 -> 06:45 AM) Put away the tin foil hats fellows. Kenny Williams said he isn't doing anything, because there is nothing out there worth doing. Of course he isn't going to say that there is a big deal working, but he also wouldn't flat out deny it if it were actually happening. And everyone wants to point to the AJ thing, but at the time, we were going to get AJ. It took major campaigning by Hawk to open that door, and then it still took a while for Kenny to investigate AJ to his satisifaction before he would act on it. The deals that are on the table now are stupid. If there was a deal that would improve this team, KW would do it, and money isn't an object right now. But even with saying that, just because you have money in your pocket doesn't mean you go out and spend it stupidly. These guys also don't want this to be a one year thing, and trading away guys like McCarthy, Marte and Anderson for a middle of the road pitcher, that is not doing the future teams justice. There is a balance there. Our best hope is one of these teams that is holding onto desparation right now, finds a horrific two week slump and decides to meltdown at the last minute and we slip in the backdoor to pick up some guys (ala the white flag trade of 97 in reverse). Other than that this is the worst deadline trade market I have ever seen. I have never seen the teams looking to add players having to pay so much. In a wierd way it was a great year to have a bad first half, because veteran players are trading as such a premium right now. It does seem like prices for players that can help is high. We'll have to wait until the deadline to see how the market actually shakes out. I think part of the problem is other teams aren't enamoured with the White Sox prospects. We'll see. Guys will get traded. It will be interesting to see what the sellers actually get.

AND THATS A WHITE SOX WINNER!!!!
QUOTE(needauribe @ Jul 18, 2005 -> 09:29 PM) To anyone who got to watch on WCIU: Farmer said Hawk caught the ball Crede fouled off just before the homer. Is that true? Edit: Eat s*** tiggers!!!!!!!!! It bounced off his hands. Give Hawk an erra.

El Duque
QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Jul 18, 2005 -> 09:42 PM) That ball Inge hit was actually off the end of the bat and just kept going. If he hits them that hard off the end of the bat, he's going to be a 50 home run guy some day. Is that what the replay showed? I was sitting a couple rows from the Tiger on deck circle and as soon as he hit it everyone around me knew it was gone.

Bucs now in AJ 3 way deal?
I heard Angelos isn't too thrilled about taking Burnett with his reconstructed elbow.
-
El Duque
Just got back. El Duque was better than he was when he went on the DL, he actually fooled a couple of guys, but he is not at a point where he can be relied on. They hit some ropes off him, including an Inge bomb the very first pitch of the game. All in all, I would say he was average tonight. Maybe he can improve, but if he went down to a tired shoulder in June, I don't see how anyone can count on him for September and October.

KW on the score
I think this means KW is going to wait for Wagner to become available.

Shingo Takatsu
QUOTE(The Critic @ Jul 18, 2005 -> 01:51 PM) Not sure about that at all. It wouldn't make sense for him to use the no-trade, even if he could. Unless he really didn't want to play for the team that wants to obtain him. If no one wants to trade for him, what are the options? Does he have to either go to Charlotte or become a free agent? I, for one, will miss Shingo. As I said before in another thread, he was my highlight of the 2004 season and I appreciate the fun times he provided last year. Best of luck to Shingo and I hope some other team can experience SHINGO TIME!!! GONNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I think I read where his no-trade clause was fiction.

Shingo to the Dbacks by today?
Has Shingo been sent to Charlotte?

GAME THREAD 7-18-2005 vs. Detroit
Remember the 1994 team everyone thought would win the World Series? If the White Sox went 6-17 their next 23 games they would have the same record as that team. It puts things into perspective as to how unbelievable they have played this year.

Latroy hawkins to the Whitesox??
QUOTE(Cubs Suck23 @ Jul 18, 2005 -> 11:03 AM) WSCR radio just said that the Sox are really close to sending Shingo to AZ so i guess NO Hawkins WSCR has been wrong countless times before. I remember when they announced the Sox had signed Dave Stewart. Turns out it was Dave Steib.

Mags Best Player I Have Ever Play With
QUOTE(rangercal @ Jul 18, 2005 -> 09:41 AM) I don't know. I just don't trust paulie since 2002. I feel the royce comment and now this may be indirect shots at Frank. Sometimes its just best not to say anything at all. The Clayton comment and this one are totally different. Clayton was released by the Sox and considered a cancer by members of the team and management. Ordonez was the best player on the team during Konerko's time here. His teammates respected him and management offered him the largest contract in team history. Konerko is far from the only one with the team who feels the way he does.

GAME THREAD 7-18-2005 vs. Detroit
QUOTE(WSoxMatt @ Jul 18, 2005 -> 09:16 AM) Ill be there Wednesday and BOO him all day!!! He left and bashed the Sox and Guillen, thats reason enough. C Lee took the high road and praised us. I wonder how he feels being 18 some odd games out of first place now too!! Didn't Ozzie bash the White Sox when he left after 1997?

Mags Best Player I Have Ever Play With
QUOTE(jphat007 @ Jul 18, 2005 -> 07:48 AM) From the media point of view he is. Konerko has never met a microphone he doesn't like, especially when he is playing decently. But he has said nothing here that is wrong. Ozzie referred to Konerko as the team leader a couple of weeks ago. Ozzie supposedly doesn't lie.

Mags Best Player I Have Ever Play With
Frank has quotes about Magglio too. They were the guys that were asked about him.

Mags Best Player I Have Ever Play With
QUOTE(Cubs Suck23 @ Jul 18, 2005 -> 06:12 AM) Chicago White Sox first baseman Paul Konerko gets to play against the best player he ever played with -- Tigers rightfielder Magglio Ordonez. "I just know he was a great teammate, and he's the best player I ever played with, period," Konerko told the Daily Herald of Arlington Heights, Ill. Konerko spoke on the eve of Ordonez's first game against the White Sox, which happens tonight when the Tigers visit U.S. Cellular Field. Ordonez spent his whole 14-year career in the Sox organization before signing with the Tigers for $75 million in the off-season. "No offense to anybody I've played with, but when that guy's healthy and playing well, I've never played with anybody better," Konerko said. That statement seems more impressive considering Konerko played with Mike Piazza in Los Angeles and, for the past six years, with Frank Thomas. Ordonez played three games before July because of hernia surgery. He missed any chance to stop Chicago's runaway season in the Central Division. Chicago (61-29) has a 12-game division lead largely because of a 30-5 record in the Central, 7-1 against the Tigers. Four of those wins came in the first month. Konerko came to the Sox in 98 or 99. Who was a better player than Magglio since that time?

Recommendation
There is a couple guys at the Red Line 35th St. stop who have loads of tickets. I bet a couple of them have 8 together, or very close.

Who Gets Sent Down
Isn't Gload's rehab assignment up on Monday as well? Does he have options left?

Maggs Returns!
Does anyone on this board realize Magglio not taking the White Sox offer turned into a very good thing for the White Sox? The bitterness is puzzling. He did us a favor. I believe his reception will be mixed. There will be the boo birds, but there will be a lot of people who will appreciate his accomplishments in a White Sox uniform. Hopefully, no one will do something stupid. It is half price night.

Hernandez To The Yankees???
QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jul 17, 2005 -> 04:41 PM) The 2000 team was built around power. It was built in a way that if the power didn't appear...and if those 4 guys (and/or Valentin) struggled...we couldn't win. What is this year's team built around? Everything. We're not just a power team, we're a team that plays defense, pitches the hell out of the opposition, has good power, and has the ability to score runs without power. Even if Thomas, Everett, Konerko and Dye all struggle (like they did in May) we can still win by getting good pitching, getting guys on base, moving them over and knocking them in. Neither of the 4 I mentioned was a homerun or bust type of player. That 2000 team was not one dimensional. They had Durham with 25 steals, Singleton with 22, Ordonez with 18, Valentin with 17 or 18. They moved runners up, did the little things. Ordonez hit .315 that season, Frank hit .328, Lee hit .301 and Konerko hit .298. If anything, Thomas and Konerko have become more of a homerun or nothing type of player since. If Thomas,Everett, Konerko and Dye, particularly Thomas and Konerko since they're batting 3 and 4 struggle like those guys did in 2000 the Sox aren't going to win. They can beat Detroit, Cleveland, Tampa with struggling hitters. They can't beat Oakland, and won't be able to beat Boston, New York or the Angels without some offense . BTW, the White Sox still rely on the long ball to score a majority of their runs.

Hernandez To The Yankees???
QUOTE(beck72 @ Jul 17, 2005 -> 02:56 PM) IMO, El Duque has just as much chance as Jason Schmidt, or AJ Burnett [not to mention the lesser tier SP's mentioned] to give the sox 6, 7 strong innings in a playoff game. Yet it wouldn't cost the sox a penny more or any prospects. Then the sox still can get a top tier closer and another bat. I was looking at the box scores from the 2000 ALDS. I think adding a bat might be wise, and I'm with you about adding a closer, moving all the bullpen down a spot. In that 2000 series the Sox scored 7 runs in 3 games. They scored 4 in the first 2 innings of the series, all against Mr. Freddy Garcia. Lee,Thomas,Konerko, and Ordonez combined to go 3-40 in that series. The 2 guys still on the team, Thomas and Konerko were a combined 0-18.
