  1. This is a guy who advanced stats really gives no justice. He doesn’t give up a lot of runs. I will take a3.75 ERA from him and let others argue why guys with ERAs over a run more are way more valuable. 3 years in this market, with his agent, is good. He will have to earn year 4.
  2. I don’t have to try better, it’s a ridiculous trade. Besides, if Desmond is worth something as a platoon player, why couldn’t the Rockies platoon him? You are talking out of both sides of your mouth. The trade is great for the White Sox because Gray doesn’t make much and has a lot of upside and Desmond would be great in a platoon, but on the other hand, saying it would be great for the Rockies to be out of this $25 million over 2 years for a negative WAR player, so great, Jon Gray is a reasonable price. Jon Gray type players don’t get traded for salary relief. The end.
  3. That is still only $40 million. Gray has averaged way more than $20 million of worth per season the last 4 years. it would never happen.
  4. They wouldn’t. He was a 2.9 WAR pitcher last year, Steamer projects 3.5 in 2020. You shouldn’t factor in Desmond’s negative WAR. It is irrelevant. If they released him his WAR becomes the same as mine or yours, 0.0. If Gray puts up his Steamer number the next 2 years, that is 7 WAR, well worth eating $25 million. Maybe you can site some examples of teams giving up players of Gray’s caliber to eat $25 million over 2 years, but I doubt it.
  5. Yes. They could trade Gray for a package of prospects that would more than cover Desmond’s deal. It doesn’t make sense to give up Jon Gray for Desmond’s contract. There are many more options that actually increase the teams talent level. While the contract is horrid there is only $25 million to go. Gray is worth way more than that.
  6. I couldn't see the Rockies even giving this a thought. It would be like if Jose Abreu actually played as bad as Ron thinks in 2020, and next winter the Sox gave Giolito to any team that took Joses contract.
  7. Why does Gonzalez not get a better contract? Obviously he isn't a top of the rotation guy anymore but similar pitchers seem to get more. Is it because of his age and size? Little pitchers have always been discriminated against, but he has kept his performance at a fairly decent level. It is almost like the consensus is he is going to fall off a cliff.
  8. When he was first acquired, he was a few months from being a free agent. Sox signed him to a surprising extension. CHICAGO -- The Chicago White Sox acquired All-Star pitcher Freddy Garcia from the Seattle Mariners on Sunday, bolstering their rotation for the AL Central race. Garcia, who can become a free agent after this season, will pitch for White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen, one of his best friends.
  9. Freddy Garcia.. The problem is when they are so close to being a free agent, why limit it to one place you aren't very familiar with?
  10. Francisco Lindor's worst season is a 4.0 WAR. To put Tim Anderson anywhere close to him is hilarious. If you are going to base TA's surplus value vs. his best season, shouldn't you do the same with Lindor, and his 7.6? What is the surplus value then? That said, the tweet was BS and it makes no sense to trade for him unless you can lock him up for a long time. Come in second when he becomes a free agent.
  11. Scott Linebrink Octavio Dotel Mike MacDougal
  12. When JR just started Jim Kern Sparky Lyle
  13. George Foster Ervin Santana Chris Sabo Jim Abbott
  14. Maybe Hector Santiago is next. I get it, it's a minor league signing to perhaps fill the Charlotte staff, but can't they find something more interesting. You aren't going to want this guy on the mound in Chicago, he hasn't put up a 1 WAR since Kevin Youkilis was playing 3rd for the White Sox and you know most of the Charlotte staff seems to appear at least briefly in Chicago at some point. I get most guys that get what he gets are brutal. But maybe one of them has a shot to be better. He doesn't.
  15. I've ripped KW, RH as much as anyone, but there is no chance they would trade Madrigal and Vaughn in the same deal, let alone for a 35 year old injured pticher, unless they were guaranteed the ALC title the next 3 or 4 years.
  16. He just listed and wrote teams looking for pitching. Read it. He had nothing on the White Sox and Ryu. Just read what he wrote, He added and White Sox. Expectation within industry is Ryu will exceed Bumgarner’s $17M average annual value in deal of at least four years. Two industry people with knowledge of starting-pitching market predict minimum four years, $80M. Teams still in need of starter include #BlueJays; #Angels; #Twins.
  17. You lied. You said Rosenthal linked the White Sox to Ryu last night. Might want to read again. He just said the White Sox are looking for pitching.
  18. I am telling you Jim Boylen is the NBA version of Terry Bevington. The only thing missing is a cheesy mustache.
  19. Being too risk averse, makes your team win averse. Yes, giving him 4 years is probably crazy. But so is giving Wheeler 5 years and $125 million, and this guy was the better pitcher. If you are going to sign someone near the top of the free agent class, you aren't going to get a bargain. If the Sox need some sort of obvious "value" on every signing, their signings will be guys closer to the bottom than the top.
  20. Dallas Keuchel is now too old for the White Sox to sign. He was drafted 8 months after the team’s last playoff appearance. The team still has the same 3 dopes making the decisions.
  21. I am a White Sox fan. The better they play the more I enjoy the game. I could watch Oakland vs. Seattle game but I wouldn’t be too invested. I will admit when they suck a few of the barbs out of the stands make me laugh, but for the most part, going to@game James Shields starts and having it basically over in the first or second inning isn’t very entertaining to me.
  22. Hahn indicated the White Sox were told Wheeler preferrred the east coast. Perhaps they thought no one would go more than $110 million and thought the buffer would have been big enough, or maybe if they went to $135 million, Philly raises its bid as well. All that really matters is the Sox had a target, and they missed. You can take the fact the Sox mad the highest bid as a moral victory, and doing all they can do, I take it as embarrassing. Someone would rather play in Philadelphia than Chicago and proves it by taking less money. Why doesn’t that happen to the Cubs? l
  23. For what they get in salary and term every one of the top free agents is going to eventually be an overpay. And the teams that get “burned “ by signing these guys, keep signing more of them.
  24. That has been my argument. The location doesn’t seem to hurt the Cubs or the Yankees, or Red Sox. But White Sox? It isn’t a first rate organization, and until they start winning, the guys who can go anywhere will chose elsewhere if the money is essentials the same. They can only blame themselves for letting this franchise go down as far as it has. The Tribune didn’t even have a beat writer most of the season. It is a unique problem for a franchise Rick Hahn went out of his way to describe as a destination. i am amazed the pass they get on this.
