Hahn indicated the White Sox were told Wheeler preferrred the east coast. Perhaps they thought no one would go more than $110 million and thought the buffer would have been big enough, or maybe if they went to $135 million, Philly raises its bid as well. All that really matters is the Sox had a target, and they missed. You can take the fact the Sox mad the highest bid as a moral victory, and doing all they can do, I take it as embarrassing. Someone would rather play in Philadelphia than Chicago and proves it by taking less money. Why doesn’t that happen to the Cubs? l

For what they get in salary and term every one of the top free agents is going to eventually be an overpay. And the teams that get “burned “ by signing these guys, keep signing more of them.
-
That has been my argument. The location doesn’t seem to hurt the Cubs or the Yankees, or Red Sox. But White Sox? It isn’t a first rate organization, and until they start winning, the guys who can go anywhere will chose elsewhere if the money is essentials the same. They can only blame themselves for letting this franchise go down as far as it has. The Tribune didn’t even have a beat writer most of the season. It is a unique problem for a franchise Rick Hahn went out of his way to describe as a destination. i am amazed the pass they get on this.

If they are dragging this another year just sell the team to someone willing to run it like a major league team in a major market. If this offseaon is a wrap from a trying to be as good as you can be perspective, take the money you have been banking and the final sale price of the team and go away.
-
They can make all the excuses they want but as of today the White Sox wo will not dance with Boras, and until they do they will be a lower tier franchise.
-
I think you are off on this one. MadBum got $85 million but $15 million is deferred. Kluber has 2 team options in the $15 million range. So they can get out of that any year. Far more desirable situation than Price and he is 1 year removed from a Cy Young. Not 3 years of being average.
-
He has averaged 21 starts and 2 WAR the last 3 years. He has had wrist and elbow issues. He is going to be 35. How many red flags do you need?
-
If they aren't adding a pretty good player, I see no reason why you want to help them out. Just for Price for a return of Daniel Palka or worse and nothing else coming from Boston, If I were GM, they would have to eat at least $55 -60 million.

His wrc+ was 129 last year. He is an older version of JDMartinez , obviously a notch or two below, but so will be his paycheck. It is an opportunity to improve the team and it will cost less than Machados friends. To me it's a no brainer. I like McCann. I was one of the few who wasn't up in arms the Sox signed him last year, but Grandal seals his fate. Trade him, get something, save the cash, if the team isn't winning, flip EE. So for a slight bump in payroll you get EE in your line up and a prospect or two or a reliever with some upside.

One place where the White Sox organization has failed is not havi g their Nike jerseys for sale on their website for Christmas gifts. Just trying to get rid of the Majestic inventory is going to upset a lot of people who are not aware.
-
Here’s the thing, with Grandal around, there is zero chance McCann re signs with the White Sox unless he has a bad year.then you probably don’t want him anyway. Collins is the back up catcher, you could actually let him face right handed starters, and Edwin is still mashing. His bat in the line up every day would really help this team. A lot of teams are looking for catchers.McCann’s 2019 might have been enough to make one of them give up something very interesting for his services, and losing him most likely isn’t the difference between winning the WS in 2020 and not. Plus you give him a solid with a chance at more playing time during his free agent year.
-
Bruce reported the other day the Sox met with EE’s people. This could be due diligence , it could be something more. If he was brought in to be the main DH, I would think McCann would be the odd man out. He would be strictly a back up catcher being paid over $5 million and a free agent in a year. What kind of package could he bring back in a trade?
-
I think if those guys were getting what you suggest, they would be signed right now. Some things are obvious. And one of them is Price isn’t worth anywhere near $60 million anymore. Let alone sending talent away. I don’t think Hahn would give up Madrigal or Vaughn for Price even if Boston ate 80% of his contract. Banking on a soon to be 35 year old often injured pitcher when you don’t have to is not very smart. And it isn’t like his wrist was his only issue.

Sox acquire Nomar Mazara for Steele Walker

The thing I liked was he gets burned on advanced stats probably because he played in Arlington, but his home road splits are really similar. What his numbers have been really could be a floor. And as awful as people want to make them, they really aren’t all that bad. Lifetime, he is a .754 OPS which isn’t awful for a 24 year old. He averages 24 homers per 162. Whether he improves , who really knows, but the talent is there. -
The guy will be 35 in August, has averaged 21 starts a year the last 3 years. There really is no reason to have any interest especially if they aren’t adding a good player and they expect one back. Just move on. Let them be handcuffed. Continuing can only blow up in your face. No need to be Wiley Coyote again.

2019-2020 Official NBA Thread

I agree. Boylen probably shouldn’t have given him the satisfaction of knowing he heard him. -
Let them see who wants Price at $60 million. I would say no one. Then let them see about $50 million. Getting closer but still no great bargain. Taking money is doing the Sawks a great service, they only net what you take off Price’s contract but also their penalty. Treat him like the injured 34 year old he is.

Or, hey the Sox signed Grandal and came in second for their pitching target, rejoice. Why? The White Sox are a mid market team playing in a major market. They are the reason they are a mid market team. That is how they operate. I have defended JR a lot, and have written this a lot recently, it’s time for JR to sell. Sell it to someone who will refuse to be a mid market team. Will make fans expect winning. Expect signing the best players, and make them relevant again. When is the last time the Cubs lost out on a guy even after offering the most money because he wanted to play by his future in laws.? We have accepted mediocrity long enough. It is time to stop operating like a mom and pop shop, and act like a major league team playing in a world class city that players love coming to. If JR cannot operate like that, his toy should be taken away.

Robin Ventura, Jack McDowell, White Flag trade, Alex Fernandez, Ray Durham, Maggs Ordonez, Mark Buehrle, Chris Sale. They re signed Konerko but let him become a free agent. If the Sox don’t win the WS in 2005’ and he isn’t the ALCS MVP, and hits one of the biggest home runs in team history in that WS, he almost certainly makes the list. Who they take care of are the guys that sign team friendly extensions. Once they are beyond that, they generally become former White Sox. ironically it is my opinion that the trades that brought many of the candidates for team friendly extensions, are exactly what may be used against them in refusing the offer. You sign them because you like where you are and it sets you up in case of injury. But knowing you might wind up somewhere else you may not like while on this deal may turn the player off and make them think taking their chances with their health, performance, and arb, is the better route.
-
While so,e of this is ridiculous, it is time for the White Sox to pick a lane. Are they going to be a team capable of providing near luxury tax payrolls? If not, sustainable success is probably not in the cards. If they are going to spend their money conservatively they need to hire personnel that can overcome the lack of money being spent. They go after Machado, but don’t make much of an effort for Rendon. They go after Wheeler, but are said to not be very aggressive for anyone else. Make up your mind. Either throw money at your problems or go after a Beane or the guy in Tampa who are used to limited payrolls. Give them a few extra dollars for the payroll. Not their assistants. Pay them to win occasionally, which is more than you can say for the current group.
-
I was going to go with Perez as a White Sox target earlier this offseason as a case of they always get their man. They tried really hard to get him for Alex Rios back in the day. But he has been pretty bad so I thought this probably was a time where they moved on,
-
I think Ray Ray is right. He's back to coaching softball. If he was a huge loss, another team would have scooped him up.
-
When this first started, there was a bunch of 2019 is when the window will open posts. I remember when even optimistic Hawk was trying to temper expectations and said 2020 is when it was going to be great.

F the Red Sox. Let them be stuck. Walk away.

Billy played when there was a 154 game schedule. Here are the Sox win totals when he was a member of the team: 68,60,84,81,89,91,91,85,90,82,94,87,86. They were under .500 his first 2 seasons and 11 seasons won more games than Rich Hahn has ever won playing 8 more.
