They will have an entire season of playing next year, and will make the decisions themselves. There will be plenty of ABs to go around, and the suspects are all pretty much of the age it's either produce or find another job.

Carlos Rodon to the DL, will not pitch again in 2017
Dick Allen replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 8, 2017 -> 09:55 AM) So it is your belief that Carlos Rodon has done nothing but "watched television" since his last time out? He certainly hasn't opened it up much or he wouldn't have even bothered warming up. This was a last second thing. Just remember how extra cautious the White Sox have been with injuries this season. If there was any hint of anything being wrong with Rodon prior to 20 minutes before last night's game, he wouldn't have even tried warming up. But the proof will be in the pudding. You will hear the MRI came up with nothing structural, but Rodon will be shelved for the time being. -

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 8, 2017 -> 09:15 AM) How on Earth does that logic work? He wasn't hurt last time so he can't have something new or worse now? If there was something wrong, I would guess, and I know none of us know like you do, that something would have reared its ugly head when he was throwing 98 MPH rather than just hurting himself since. He mentioned how good his arm felt AFTER he last pitched. Totally illogical to you I guess. But I come from the position that pitchers generally hurt their arms pitching, not watching television. Pitchers pitch sore all the time. If 100% was required for pitchers to pitch, baseball would become t-ball by June. But there is no reason for Rodon to push it at this time. -

I am not too worried about this. He was fine when he last pitched. I bet if the Sox were battling for something he pitches last night. e. Shut him down and continue your quest for the highest draft pick. They will give him an MRI, but I think that is more for appearances sake than anything else. -

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Sep 7, 2017 -> 02:43 PM) Rosters are going to be raided if players are available to play right away. Its not good for anyone but a handful of schools. It already is for the one and dones. There are about 5 schools that get them. Occasionally there is a straggler, but not many. But I agree, there would be so much movement, and it wouldn't help most programs. It would be like NBA super team formations on steroids, and there would be so much back door recruitment, it would be sick. -
QUOTE (Greg Hibbard @ Sep 7, 2017 -> 03:10 PM) Is Saladino still a guy who is in contention for a major league spot after this season? Offensively he's been utterly atrocious since April. I was thinking about this last night. I wonder if his back is 100%. Obviously he has nothing at the plate. Nothing at all. Even defensively, he's made some really nice plays, and is so sound fundamentally ( I admire his practicing backhanded flips before games) but he has booted a few this year he normally has no problem with.

Hahn said yesterday they are entering the hardest part of the rebuild. Development. There is going to be a lot of failure, hopefully most will overcome it and become great players, but they aren't kidding themselves about several of these guys not being what they hoped. Anderson is in that group, but a lot of times, you have to be bad before you are good. Patience is key. There is a good chance Giolitto and Lopez do some sucking next year, and if Kopech comes up...not everyone is Chris Sale or Frank Thomas. From what I heard about Anderson, it's very encouraging. He knows the mistakes he's making both at the plate and in the field, and wants to clean them up. He's not a guy whose head is in the clouds and thinks he can just stay where he is at and everything will change. It takes time.

QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Sep 7, 2017 -> 02:33 PM) I really think we're gonna struggle to find playing time for the borderline guys next year, especially in the OF. Right now, you have Delmonico, Garcia, Garcia, Garcia, Engel, Cordell, and Liriano playing for 3 spots and a DH. There are also guys like Jimenez and Polo who may very well be here by the end of 2018. Even after an Avi trade, I don't see how the Lirianos and Willy Garcias of the world get a fair look- especially if the organization is still so in love with Engel in center. It all sorts itself out every time.
-
These guys can all play next year, but all of them will have to improve in order for them to be regulars on a team the White Sox will sell as a contender. Engel will have to hit a bit. Leury is going to have to become a bit more baseball savvy. Hanson.....he just isn't a championship calibur player.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Sep 7, 2017 -> 01:38 PM) We're within the window where the models get pretty accurate. This looks extremely bad for southern Florida. It looks bad for the entire state. It's looks like it will be blown to smithereens.

QUOTE (3GamesToLove @ Sep 7, 2017 -> 01:07 PM) Law has remained relatively high on Giolito throughout, right? Yeah, but I don't understand how he is saying he is looking like the guy who was skyrocketing the charts if his velocity is down and he doesn't have the same curveball. I will say, when he was bouncing his curveball in a couple of starts ago, he was fine throwing it in between innings warming up, and it was falling off the table.

They need to name the DL after him. But he probably should be shut down. He isn't going to accomplish anything the next few weeks.. They need to let the Becks and Coveys , Frys and Bummers cover the bullpen innings vs. SF. SF and Detroit are huge series. More than a couple of wins is going to kill them for the top pick.

QUOTE (Two-Gun Pete @ Sep 7, 2017 -> 10:40 AM) At the same time, players with mediocre MiLB track records generally don't go on to be productive MLB hitters. And it is beggars belief to hope otherwise. The hardest skill to acquire (wihin the limits of a player's natural ability) is to hit MLB pitching. Engel wasn't even above-average for the majority of his time in the minors. And others who came before him that were mediocre in MiLB were similarly unable to improve. Why would Engel be any different? I'll leave it at this: Even though the 2018 team doesn't figure to be competitive, the best player should still play over lesser ones. I'm simply not convinced that Engel is the best option, based on the entirety of his track record, & his abject lack of hitting ability @ the MLB level. Unless they get someone who is projectionable and can play CF in the major leagues next year, get ready to see a lot of Engel in 2018. They love him. The front office knows he is going to have to hit, but look like they are willing to exhaust every chance before they give up. Renteria loves him so much, he wants him to play if he can't hit. Maybe he could have him bunt 600 times a year.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Sep 7, 2017 -> 03:30 AM) Good Lord That would be devastating. I had always figured when I retired I would spend my summers and most of the fall in Chicago, and buy a condo in south FL for the winter. Now, maybe I'll rent or go to AZ in the winter. Even though I wouldn't be there for hurricane season, I don't want to own anything in any hurricane alley.

2017 Offseason White Sox News, Notes, and Tweets thread

QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 6, 2017 -> 10:40 PM) Wow. That means the rebuild is gonna take a long while if Abreu is too old. Their contract? Why would that matter? Why would some lady want Coop fired? Just cause he's abrasive? He mentioned Abreu will be 32 when his control ends, and you generally don't want to give 32 year old first basemen a ton of money in today's market. And seemed to expect his skills to diminish. That the funds could be allocated better elsewhere. He actually said that. He said Avi would be of a more desireable age, but he doesn't seem sold on Avi's turnaround quite yet either, and didn't seem too gung ho about paying him free agent dollars. So trade him while his value is highest. He did mention acquiring more prospects in trades, and those two, unless you are going to send prospects for prospects, are really the only guys that could bring you back interesting, unless you are really stretching out interesting, are really all they have left to acquire these types of prospects. He did mention Abreu's leadership and says that is definitely a factor, BUT it doesn't outweigh production. He also, which surprised me, said it was possible Melky could come back. There was a big Melky fan in the room. Hahn said he wasn't sure it was a fit, but definitely didn't rule it out depending on the price tag. -
2017 Offseason White Sox News, Notes, and Tweets thread
Dick Allen replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I just got out of a ticketholder event with RH. A couple of nuggets Nothing too earth shattering. It looks like he will be listening intently on offers this winter for Abreu and Avi. Thinks their contract and age in Abreu 's case don't match up well with their window. A lady wanted him to fire Coop. Coop will be around as long as he wants, although he has had medical issues again this year. If he ever leaves Curt Hassler would take his place. He loves Engel but he has to hit although Renteria doesn't care if he hits. Says they had the top position and pitching prospect last off season with Mocads and Giolito, thinks they could have the same this winter with Kopech and Eloy, and thinks they may have it next year with Hansen and Robert. A guy can dream. He also said any thought of them not spending bg on a free agent or two when it is time, is BS. Said they will spend what they have to spend. He is pretty straight forward in these meetings. Last year he scooped the rebuild was going to happen. -
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Sep 6, 2017 -> 09:35 AM) His lies (like today's about taxes) and hashtags are meant to appease and mislead his fanatical base. And it works. His lies have almost his entire life. His entire existence is built off lying. In a way, you have to give him credit, he has gotten farther by lying than probably anyone. It's one thing he could brag about and actually be honest.

QUOTE (Alexeihyeess @ Sep 5, 2017 -> 03:35 PM) Yea I was talking about the wall/securing the border, not DACA. Reading comprehension, everyone! He might "write code" but I'm not sure he "speaks English". Maybe he should get a visit from ICE.
