Chicago White Sox 2003 Draft Thread (Day One)
Who is running our draft someone just told me KW is traveling with the team? I can see someone getting a BA mock draft and using this to conduct our draft. Kind of what I do for fantasy hockey.

Honel and Cotts
How is Joe Valentine doing? The more I see John Halama pitch the more I think Billy may like to have Cotts.
-
Cotts' line
Pitch counts will always be high if you are striking poeple out. Look at the Dusty twosome. I think walks are a bigger thing. If guys are not putting the ball in play they see more pitches and therefore there is a liklihood that the counts are deeper. His problem will be if guys are swinging and missing at bad pitches that they won't swing at here, (not this forum but at the big league level,) unless they are Joe Borchard.

Commentary: Trading Colon Could be the Solution
Aren't Melvin Mora and Magglio best friends.............not sure if I have anything other than this.

One year ago today
I was there for the Ritchie affair. I think he had a perfect game going into the 5th then the defense completely feel apart. I drowned my sorrows in teh warehouse distrcit quite nicely. I think he lost hope after this and the Atlanta game.

Sheffield Fired Boras
I think it was Ray Allen that worked an agreement himself and hired an attorney to review and sign off on it. What the hell does Boras do for $500,000? Ask Bobby Hill, yet another year further from free agency. A-Rod was getting big money anyway Borass. I think I can go in and say Gary Sheffield is worth $12M a year what do you think?

Trade Boston-Arizona
Juan Cruz numbers are similar to Rick White. I believe this was a cub spin job to garner publicity. I really don't get the Red Sox rush to get rid of Hillebrand?
-
now why the hell can't he do this more often
Isn't he 23 years old? Not a big fan of his but I think he will be something if we stick with him. He is not a top of the rotation guy but he is getting better and better with time.

How did Frank look at first base?
He walked twice and got a big RBI, that is what is important here.

Konerko Worst in MLB?
I was thinking that he may be headed somewhere DL or bench and bring up a "hitter" try Miles, then Gload, then.........Rickey Henderson. Hell, bring back Baines or Walker, can't do any worse. With Thomas at first Daubach and Konerko can arm wreastle for a spot on the bench and bring in one of these other guys to DH. Trade Koch and Konerko to Boston (they have got to be getting desperate) for the young SS. Thomas produced at first last eve, leave him there. Konerko is terrrible and I am not sure he will be getting out of it.

Why have the Cub pitchers been so good?
Those same words were muttered at the beginning of the Vietnam war, too! i dont get the connection here...........cubs pitchers and the vietnam war???? It has to do with the way you use the word 'slope.'

Draft and Follow
Any chance of gettting details? I assume these were all high school players that wanted big bucks to sit in A ball for three years. Uncle Jerry blew his wad on Borchard. This is all about the spending a $1 when you only have $.50 and why we will never be a serious contendor.

Sammy Sosa Comments
I think you misunderstood my post I thought the cub should have made that trade if they were serious but they are not they just want to fill the stadium.

Sammy Sosa Comments
I don't think Rivera was part of that trade. I thought it was Nick Johnson, Soriano, Mendoza and Ted Lilly. Instead they traded the left fielder I forget his name (Glenallen Hill?) for Ben Ford. Nice move but the goal is to fill seats not win games. I am glad they didn't make that trade as they would be going after Vlad now.

Why didn't we get this guy?
As I asked earlier, who is our G.M?
-
I Can't Believe!!
NEVER PITCH WHITE IN A CLOSE GAME. Play your best defensive players on astroturf against a hot team with good offense and a ground ball pitcher on the mound. Tonight you put Graffy out there with Colon. Bunt, bunt, bunt and bench Konerko.

Sammy Sosa Comments
So I am watching the news this morning on channel 9 and they had a little part of his speech on. His remarks were incredible as he stated to the reporter, "knock off the bulls*** this team needs me." He then went on to say, "I don't care how good THEY did, they need ME." There was no mentioning of how well they were doing and now they would go even further. Man this guy is a headcase. If anyone on the Sox said this it would be headline news. He was completly serious and pissed that someone would suggest this. He was also wearing a winter cap yesterday when it was 70 in the shade. Friggin joke.

Who is running this team
Assuming the idea that KW is no longer running this team, who is? We need someone to determine the direction (pick up a CF or dump Colon, Loiaza, Lee, Thomas, Ordonez, Valentin, Konerko, White, Koch, etc.) of this season. I think we are treading water and still have hope although it is fading fast. Why our only legitimate defensive player was not playing on astroturf is for another topic altogether. A decision needs to be made as the fan support will soon be nil if the jackass owner doesn't do something about it soon. HSC posted that JR was in his box with a GM from another team over the weekend. This is a huge concern in regard to tampering if KW is being pushed aside. Unless the GM was Hendry and JR wanted Schu back. This scares the hell out of me as Schu isn't much either. Although speaking to a GM to try and pry and employee away would make sense as they come cheaper that those capable of doing the job, (i.e. Dan Duquette.)

Making of a winner
My point on him was that we have him for next year realatively cheap if he keeps this up. Maybe he is like a Moyer type that is figuring out how to pitch in the majors. If he falls apart we will be 10 out in a hurry. He is only 31. Look at Matt Clement he is the same type of pitcher that is justing getting it together. I think he is 30 as well. Also note Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling. I am not putting him in this class but he was always pretty highly touted and may do good things for us. My basic point was to try and lock up Colon and Buerhle as some sort of package and deal with Loiaza at some other point. We are not serious and we will not do this. Next years rotation: Buerhle, Loiaza(assuming we pick up the $2M option,) Garland, Wright, and (Rauch, Stewart, Cotts, etc.) This does nothing for me. And will finally do me in on the season ticket plan.

Making of a winner
I think the sox need to do everything in their power to sign Bartolo Colon. I would try to lock up Buerhle with a huge fourth year of a four year contract and then offer Bartolo a three year deal for whatever he wants. This keeps Colon, Loiaza, Buerhle, Konerko, Lee, Jimenez, and Ordonez locked up for next year. A good GM could fill in the pieces and I think KW is gone. What we need to do is offer Buerhle like $2M for the next 3 years and then a fourth year player option for $20M. I really like our roation if Buerhle can come around.

Parque sent down again
Now I can go and shove the Carol Slezak article up her ass. I am not sure why this has pissed me off so much but a whole inside cover story on Jim Parque is ridiculous. The talentless drivel that is Chicago sports reporters. Maybe now she will write about Fred Manrique tearing up the Hondurus league.

Sox scouts at the BOB
Junior Spivey and Mark Grace for Paul Konerko. Send Paul home, I think I would miss him though. Gracie could sit and smoke in the parking lot withe the tailgaters. I like it.

Twins-A's
They get Hudson, Zito and Mulder we'll see what they are made of.

Gm Stalked
Better lock your car, sorry that was a low blow but I had to.

sun times column
Ward is/was KW's guy. I think she's a bit confused. After the Parque article I put Slezak as one of the worst sports reporters in this town and there are plenty of bad ones. The Times seems to be trying to give the Sox as bad a publicity write as possible. Case in point, cubs being road weary after 4 in Milwaukee and 4 in St. Louis. This are not very far travels. This paper blows. Slezak is completly clueless. She should go to the society papers or write for the Onion. That was what I thought of when I read a full article about Parque having pitched 6 good innings.
