  1. QUOTE (greg775 @ Oct 10, 2013 -> 05:57 PM) I know people are suffering cause they need the work and need the paychecks being denied them because of Obama n the Republicans. I blame our celebrity president for failure to show one iota of leadership skill. How can Obama use "leadership" to force Boehner to bring up a vote on a clean continuing resolution? A resolution which, if voted on, would be passed by the house, has already passed the Senate and would be signed by Obama?
  2. QUOTE (Tex @ Oct 10, 2013 -> 03:22 PM) The PPACA. Democrats have basically just assumed that the bill is fine and the GOP is trying to save their own skin. They have? I seem to remember them believing it's a huge compromise bill with a lot of parts that has needed some fixes and adjustments, needs more that we know of (but a certain group won't let happen!) and will need more in the future. edit: there's plenty of criticism of Obamacare and Democrats in general from the left. You don't need to assume that the only criticism of Democratic policies comes from Republicans. So which one of the people screaming about Obamacare socializing medicine, creating death panels, killing freedom and destroying America are given intelligent, thoughtful criticism? Maybe ~both sides~ is a garbage, unprincipled position and that we don't actually have to assume that all actors are rational, interested in good policy and good governance and are negotiating in good faith.
  3. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Oct 10, 2013 -> 03:12 PM) What is the incentive to settle? They are still getting paid. They live in a world where they get to smash their brand new car and expect to be given a new one just because. They're almost all multi-millionaires and independently wealth. Their meager Congressional salary doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things.
  4. Yeah, that's the really s***ty thing here: the "clean CR" that the Democrats are pushing for locks in sequestration-level spending.
  5. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 10, 2013 -> 02:18 PM) A recently hired professor at UT got the call today saying that the trip for her research was canceled. Tenure processes at universities generally have reviews after about 4-5 years. Losing an entire field season could cost a researcher years of work. This could legitimately destroy her career. Cuts in grants and funding thanks to the sequester is having a major impact like this as well, no?
  6. some additional information on the website boondoggles: http://www.slate.com/articles/business/bit...ver_talked.html
  7. The GOP changed the House rules (fully within their rights) on September 30th to ensure that the Senate bill could not come to the floor: http://talkingpointsmemo.com/dc/the-house-...teed-a-shutdown
  8. QUOTE (Tex @ Oct 10, 2013 -> 06:32 AM) As Democrats I believe it is important to look past partisan politics and wonder if this really is the boondoggle that will destroy America. nah
  9. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Oct 9, 2013 -> 11:37 PM) There could easily be enough votes in the Senate to pass any of the temp funding bills the House has passed, but we'll never know since Reid won't let them come for a vote. Why do you not see that also? 1) what's the indication that this is actually true? There's good reason people believe there are enough votes in the house-public statements by enough republicans. 2) Obama will veto this anyway.
  10. Honestly I have more respect for crazy Ted Cruz than ~ both sides ~ nonsense.
  11. QUOTE (Cknolls @ Oct 9, 2013 -> 10:54 AM) I did watch about an hour. Was amazed that only 20 something reporters covered that press conference at the Super Bowl in 2009. seems like a story right in their wheel house. Also that NFL doctor (Dr. NO) is a freaking bad person. Urge to kill shill doctors...rising
  12. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Oct 9, 2013 -> 03:52 PM) Supposedly there are enough votes to pass a clean CR in the house, yet the vote isn't happening. That, more than anything else, sums up why American politics sucks so bad. There is literally one single person to blame for that right now.
  13. Yes, otherwise the Queen of England will win and we'll be subjugated by the hated British again.
  14. Yeah I'm not entirely sure why a tasting room wouldn't just fall under the local liquor license.
  15. Shutdown means no new beer from craft brewers
  16. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 9, 2013 -> 10:03 AM) Next on Frontline, why orphans and puppies should be murdered. No, no, it'll be about how orphans and puppies are murdered by banks in coal mines that are polluting the water tables and also kicking the poors while having corrupt police shoot you.
  17. QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Oct 9, 2013 -> 10:02 AM) That's what I was hinting at too. I remember when republicans were adamant he wasn't born in America. You know, the whole birther issue. So Cruz wouldn't be eligible is my guess. That's how I've been reading all of the "Cruz is a Canadian!" stuff--just poking fun at birthers who flipped their s*** over the Kenyan Muslim Socialist and the ridiculous lengths they've gone to who have run to embrace Cruz. I don't think anyone here was a birther, though.
  18. Is there any episode of Frontline that isn't meant to enrage and/or depress you?
  19. http://www.nytimes.com/2013/08/24/sports/f...ed=all&_r=0 They were involved with the project for over a year, but left abruptly earlier this year.
  20. I missed it last night (dinner at the parents') but I plan on watching it tonight. This is the one that the NFL forced ESPN to pull out of.
  21. QUOTE (Jake @ Oct 9, 2013 -> 09:44 AM) You would like the book What Money Can't Buy - The Moral Limits of Markets by Michael Sandel, a professor at Harvard. It's been on my Amazon Wish List for two years but nobody buys me nerdy political books
  22. QUOTE (Jake @ Oct 9, 2013 -> 08:42 AM) Just a growing trend in the USA since the introduction of trade- money as the all-determining factor to the quality of your existence Plenty of societies have had both trade and communal ownership.
  23. Now I'm even more curious as to what sort of "adjustments" were made to the unemployment rate. His trend line doesn't match U-4, 5 or 6. http://portalseven.com/employment/unemploy...amp;toYear=2012 http://portalseven.com/employment/unemploy...amp;toYear=2012 http://portalseven.com/employment/unemploy...amp;toYear=2012
