OBAMA/TRUMPCARE MEGATHREAD
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Oct 14, 2013 -> 09:14 AM) I'll prepare to be flamed here repeatedly, but at some point, maybe it's ok that certain government programs/funding gets put on the back burner while the economy and our society in general heals from a pretty major blow in the recent past? Yes? Maybe? Just a little? Your conclusion doesn't follow from your premise here. edit: more bluntly, cutting off our own feet with respect to scientific research and technological development isn't going to help the economy or our society in general. It's going to hurt it. Especially when it's done in such a stupid manner as its being done right now.

OBAMA/TRUMPCARE MEGATHREAD
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 14, 2013 -> 09:07 AM) Not exactly. If a grant has already been paid to a researcher at a university, then you have the money to keep running (and frankly, I'm not going to shut down an experiment I'm running even if I stop getting paid). The things that actually shut down were things being staffed by federal employees. People working for the CDC, NASA, NIH, government labs like Oak Ridge, Sandia, Livermore, Los Alamos, those guys are the ones who had to shut down immediately and preserve what they could. We're facing a work stoppage at the end of this week at Los Alamos if this thing doesn't get resolved. It's not any sort of long-term project, but it's still annoying. Here's some more on the impacts of the shut down, which is really just an amplified version of the terrible sequester policies, on biomedical science.

A major health care research conference that took years to plan and arrange was screwed up when about 1/3 of the attendees and speakers had to leave because they were NIH-funded. But all that matters in the sequester and the shutdown are airports and parks!

Time windows. You can't just do whatever research whenever you feel like it. As Balta posted before, the entire Antarctic research season is being cancelled.

Sad story in Oak Lawn...
QUOTE (greg775 @ Oct 13, 2013 -> 03:38 PM) I'm talking about this case. She said she did it. The family knows she did it. There is no conspiracy. Yes I want her stricken from the earth very soon, not having to wait years for a trial. If that makes me bad instead of the system, then I'm bad. I contend the system and our world can be very bad. I'm not wrong on this issue IMO. I'm not blaming you or criticizing you. I think the world would be a better place if there was more outrage against people like this woman when everybody knows she did it than people defending the legal system when somebody like me speaks out against this monster of a woman. That's just me. Who is defending this woman? Who is saying that justice shouldn't be served here? What the hell are you talking about?

QUOTE (greg775 @ Oct 13, 2013 -> 01:47 PM) The problem is not me, it's getting these monsters tried in a quicker fashion. Unless the big, bad media is out to get her I think this woman is the problem what are you talking about how many murder trials do you think get any media attention at all? why do you think that there's going to be some celebrity lawyer for this?

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Oct 12, 2013 -> 08:27 AM) Players on the Tampa Bay Bucs keep coming up with MRSA (staph infections). 3rd case since training camp opened was just revealed. They might cancel the game this weekend due to health concerns. http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-10-11/t...-infection.html that's bizarre.

Yeah, it seems to be very proceduralized. Again, not for patronage/political appointment positions, but for an overwhelming majority of the federal workforce. OTOH many, many times in the private sector it's all about knowing someone who works there, especially these days.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Oct 12, 2013 -> 12:32 AM) Exactly!! I think it is a legitimate complaint of mine to say these motherf***s who are guilty get delay after delay. Put them on trial, convict them and remove them from the planet!!! I can believe in the court system and also say IT IS MAJORLY FLAWED in these cases. The way it usually goes is ... horrible crime, big-time attorneys take the case. Attorneys delay everything for year after year after year. Trial is held. Attorney becomes famous. Sometimes the person is ultimately found guilty; sometimes not. Let's at least speed up these trials. What this woman did to that child is worthy of getting her on trial soon and convicted and put to death!!! That poor baby. You have an interesting understanding of the criminal justice system.

Sad story in Oak Lawn...
QUOTE (Y2HH @ Oct 11, 2013 -> 07:53 PM) Due process doesn't exist here. She admitted she did it, was caught red-handed with the evidence, DNA, sledgehammer and knife. What's the f***ing deal here? Are you honestly defending her? If so, you've jumped the shark that Fonzie was jumping, on the back of another shark. Why on earth would you read that post as defending her? She, like every other person, deserves due process. She will get it and she will undoubtedly be convicted. I'm defending that basic process over lynch mobs, not her.

QUOTE (Y2HH @ Oct 11, 2013 -> 08:23 PM) Sounds like a load of crap. You are 39, claiming to have hired "hundreds of people", and out of those hundreds, just 3 were connected. That is a mathematically awesome, and seemingly impossible ratio. If it was just you, I'd say you were the exception to the rule, but being that you've claimed to hire "hundreds" of full time -- unconnected employees -- at the ripe old age of 39...is laughable. TL;DR: Bulls***. My dad didn't get his federal job through any connections beyond a former co-worker let him know there was an opening. If you're talking about political appointment positions that's one thing, but you're talking out of your butt for the average federal employee.

I have plenty of complaints about the criminal justice system in this country. That we still put people through it instead of lynching them without due process is not one of those complaints.- Government Shutdown on the clock thread
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 11, 2013 -> 02:44 PM) But they're generally pretty happy to roll over once they lose an election. That's how the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts were passed, that's why 1/3 of the Democrats voted in favor of the Iraq debacle. Rolling over when they're not a majority party to pass new legislation that the governing majority wants is a bit different than rolling over to undermine your own party's biggest legislative achievement in decades when you still hold the Senate.- Government Shutdown on the clock thread
QUOTE (Iwritecode @ Oct 11, 2013 -> 02:26 PM) After all that... LOL Obama can unilaterally fund the government, don't ya know- Government Shutdown on the clock thread
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 11, 2013 -> 02:23 PM) But they'd probably sign off on a budget that defunds it. I remain skeptical. They'd probably agree to more changes and they'd probably repeal the medical devices tax as part of a deal, but there's no way they'd gut the law. Well, unless they wanted to ensure an even lower Democratic turnout in the next election.- Technology catch-all thread
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Oct 11, 2013 -> 02:22 PM) I blame my moronic secretary for opening up a questionable email more than our contracted, out-of-office IT person. QUOTE (Iwritecode @ Oct 11, 2013 -> 10:59 AM) I'm just saying that it's not unusual for Greg to have a minority opinion based on some odd rationale and then not be able to understand why nobody else agrees with him. on this we agree 100%- 2013 TV Thread
QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Oct 11, 2013 -> 10:21 AM) I loved that episode, but I think I'm in the minority. I wouldn't say I loved it, but it was good. If that's the low-point of the series, well, the low-point is still pretty damn good TV. edit: The end of "Crawl Space" is still my favorite moment in the series. - The Democrat Thread
