  1. Jon Huntsman is not a moderate. I don't know why the media kept that narrative going. I really don't see Paul running 3rd party. He's been a loyal ® for decades now.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 23, 2012 -> 08:46 AM) Not really, no. They don't get the protection of unions going to bat for them in things like arbitration, so there isn't that. They have benefits and stuff like that, but those structures are already in place. Like I said earlier the negotiations are taking place regardless of the number of employees. These two items are very similar. The political parties being on opposite sides of them is funny. The laws may vary from state-to-state, but unions are generally required to represent all people working under a contract regardless of whether they are dues-paying members. Reduced funding also impacts their ability to negotiate. The key difference here is that piracy mostly recovers deadweight loss while right-to-work does not. I'm also not sure why you're breaking SOPA/PIPA down on partisan lines. Initial support was bipartisan and the massive backlash has been bipartisan. There's also some pretty fundamental differences on the impacts of right-to-work laws and the burdens they place (or remove) from individuals and organizations and what it requires the state to do and what SOPA/PIPA would have done.
  3. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jan 22, 2012 -> 08:32 PM) No you won't, let's be honest. It's the Super Bowl If someone is having a party, I'll go. If I'm not doing anything around the house, I'll watch. But I won't let it keep me from doing something else. I had the same attitude towards the last Pats/Giants game, but luckily I had the opportunity to watch the last quarter.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 23, 2012 -> 08:37 AM) In both music/movies and unions. There is no cost associated with me downloading a pirated copy of a movie. There are costs associated with unions being required to represent non-union members. This is why digital copyright issues are distinct from numerous other "free rider" problems; digital piracy does not actually pose a direct burden on the copyright holders.

There are costs associated with administering contracts and benefits, including legal representation.
  6. QUOTE (GoodAsGould @ Jan 22, 2012 -> 08:49 PM) We also know the guy was 85 when making the statement and clearly not all there anymore, again we don't know all the details so while its sick the 2 people that I have enough information to think poorly of are Sandusky and the guy who witnessed it and failed to call police. Paterno obviously could have done more but without being in his shoes and knowing everything its hard to put as much blame as some of you have been on him. Most people in their 70's, especially in the 2000's with the catholic abuse problems, can comprehend what "man raping a boy" means. Hell, the same would be true of most people who are 85. He wasn't senile.
  7. QUOTE (GoodAsGould @ Jan 22, 2012 -> 07:30 PM) Unless Mcquery(sp?) was willing to talk to police there was nothing to be done, we don't know if he was or not. There is a lot about the situation we won't ever know. We know Paterno recently claimed to not even comprehend what McQuery meant when he described the male rape, which strains all credibility.
  8. QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Jan 22, 2012 -> 07:36 PM) Now might be the right time to mention that head football coaches are not given the power to arrest people or charge them with crimes. Now might be the right time to mention that popular sports figures have extraordinary privilege in our society and that Paterno essentially ran happy valley.
  9. Hope sf comes back, I'll probably skip a ny-ne superbowl.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 22, 2012 -> 06:39 PM) Interesting contrast between this and right to work. Not really. A free-rider downloading Batman doesn't impact my enjoyment of Batman.

Tex refuses to acknowledge reality: pirating exists and is ready, yet entertainment is still very profitable. No one is arguing that 100% piracy is good or sustainable. Some level of actual theft and of copyright violation is inevitable, and there is no compelling argument to have the government go to great lengths to maximize the rent-seeking of copyright holders to the detriment of everyone else.
  13. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Jan 22, 2012 -> 04:18 PM) Soooooooo by that logic Obama had something to hide when he refused to release his transcripts or birth certificate? He released his bc years ago but the crazy conspiracy theory right-wingers couldn't accept reality. some still don't. There is also a lot of precedent for releasing tax returns. Not so much for college transcripts.

QUOTE (Tex @ Jan 22, 2012 -> 03:50 PM) Who is putting in the money for the song that is pirated? Whose money is making that possible? The millions who still buy it even though it is readily available. What harm is done to society if balta downloads a movie he would never have paid any money for? Producing the digital copy cost nothing. No one was deprived of physical goods as in retail theft. An additional person was able to enjoy something at no additional cost to anyone. Obviously, if everyone started pirating, there would be an issue. But there is no reason to believe that will happen and ample evidence that it won't. There is no convincing evidence that pirating is currently having a negative effect on creative output/entertainment options. So why should society as a whole make sweeping changes to stop a non-problem?
  15. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jan 22, 2012 -> 10:57 AM) I would like to nominate this for Post of the Year. Strong contender.
  16. QUOTE (mr_genius @ Jan 22, 2012 -> 10:20 AM) the first two had turnouts higher than 2008 Total turnout yes, self-identified RepublIcans no.
  17. QUOTE (Brian @ Jan 22, 2012 -> 06:50 AM) What's the voter turn out been for these caucuses/primaries? Because the vote totals seem low, but I don't remember what they usually have been like in the past. First two were about 10% short of the 2008 records. Yesterday's turn out was 30% higher than 2008.
  18. There are so many things wrong with that post. The first of many is you watching a movie on lifetime.

QUOTE (DrunkBomber @ Jan 21, 2012 -> 06:34 PM) Not to mention it makes an enormous difference what type of car youre driving. I have a very light, rear wheel drive car and its basically an art form to be able to drive it in the snow. You cant accelerate through turns, you have to start slowing down for stops earlier and need to accelerate slower when starting from a stop. There certainly are people who let snow on the roads scare them waaaaaaaay too much but I dont know how many times Ive wanted to stop and throw a brick through some SUVs window for slamming on their horn because Im accelerating slower than usual after a red light or something. Good winter tires make a huge difference. I got a set of blizzaks on my gto this year and it drives great in the snow now.
  21. QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Jan 21, 2012 -> 12:44 PM) Anybody have experience with FileZilla to use FTP to connect to a server? I use it at work. Much better than windows explorer. I don't know much about it other than connecting to our own FTP, though.

My wife and I are hoping to hit Yosemite for several days this June when we head out to the Bay area for vacation. We'll be spending time in San Fran, heading down to Big Sur for a day or two and then heading out to Yosemite. Does anyone have recommendations on good places to stay in or near Yosemite? Must-see trails or hiking spots? These would all be day-hikes, and while we both enjoy hiking, neither of us are more experienced than Starved Rock. any recommendations appreciated! thanks.
  23. Makes sense to me.
  24. StrangeSox replied to Quin's topic in The Filibuster
Right, physical goods and digital copies are not the same thing, which is why many people feel that our copyright laws are outdated.
  25. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Jan 21, 2012 -> 08:58 AM) You all - pffffft. Actually you all at soxtalk know better then that on my views anyway. Sort of like I knew you all's view on the Clinton thing. (hint, stay the hell out of it, GOP, you lose on this issue). Mainstream liberals did take this view with Clinton and those same mainstream liberals are trying like mad to frame Gingrich on this issue. Gingrich is enough of a prick to implode on his own, he doesn't need help. There is a difference, though, since Gingrich likes to lecture us about the sanctity of marriage and Gay Fascism. So liberals pointing out that that Gingrich is a dumb bullfrog while also saying private sex lives aren't exactly hypocrites themselves, they are just pointing out ridiculous inconsistencies. But I wouldn't say Clinton's abuse of power and the office were strictly off-limits from public discourse.
