QUOTE (thxfrthmmrs @ Aug 16, 2015 -> 09:11 AM) Can't remember the last position player they Sox acquired that actually did better than his career norm (someone give me a name other they Dye). They actually used to be really good at bringing in retreads...dunno about career norms, but guys that could come in and rebuild their career a bit. Ellis Burks comes to mind. Albert Belle put up a monster year here, although he was pretty amazing for much of his career.

QUOTE (Markbilliards @ Aug 16, 2015 -> 09:09 AM) Yes, but not the A's GM and former player. Different BB. Ahh, didn't catch the spelling difference.

I don't know if I just missed this, or had forgotten it, but I did a double-take when they mentioned Billy Beane had come out.

Chris Tannehill/Score trying to make Harrelson look bad...?

QUOTE (Lip Man 1 @ Aug 15, 2015 -> 09:59 PM) Maybe DJ already knows. His contract like Stone's is up after this season. And if you're referring to Bob Waller that's incorrect. Waller was fired because of his pre game show with Chuck Tanner on the last day of the 1974 season. Chuck (God rest his soul) was talking about all the positive things the Sox did and Waller simply got tired of the spin and asked him why weren't they winning then? Tanner got so mad he walked off the field in the middle of the live pregame show. Waller spent the rest of the time asking questions and giving "truthful" answers to them. Ownership was not amused. The only partner Harry had (and he was a mentor to me) that he didn't like and made no bones about it was J.C. Martin. Harry felt he had no business being in a broadcast booth. I know J.C. have interviewed him, an extremely nice guy but Harry was right. J.C. was brutal. Mark Is he referring to Jimmy Piersall? -

I actually thought Stone and Hawk called a great game tonight. Yes, Hawk got a little frustrated in the 7th, but I really thought he was sharp otherwise. -
QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 15, 2015 -> 09:31 PM) I disagree. I think we could have dumped Shark, Lexi and Robertson and LaRoche for sure, all to NL teams. We also I think could have dumped Melky and Avi. At the very least I think we should have traded LaRoche, Shark, Robertson, Melky and Lexi. It would have taken guts but Hahn could have re-generated the team with trades right there. Instead we're left with the same crap for next year. Not good. For what?

QUOTE (Lip Man 1 @ Aug 15, 2015 -> 08:26 PM) Do you have any facts behind this? Newspaper stories...anything? Not a rip at you, I just never heard / read anything along these lines. Mark This was based on some stuff guys here with inside knowledge posted. Either way, what does it matter? There was no one to trade other than Shark and it doesn't sound like anyone tempted us too much anyways. You weren't getting Daniel Norris for him. As for 2016, things aren't as bad as they look. I'm not sure I understand the notion that moves made this offseason really upset any plan for 2016 and 17. Abreu and Sale are still big pieces to build around. If anything, there will be less $ on these contracts moving forward than if we would have signed them as we got closer to competing. And if we can fill some holes, there is nothing to say Robertson and Melky and even Duke cannot contribute to a winning team.

QUOTE (Soxfest @ Aug 15, 2015 -> 07:29 PM) One thing I will give the Cubs, Maddon in a coma could outmanage Ventura. I think this has been covered.

All I can say is that one of the things other than the weather that is great about no longer living in Chicago is not having to be so insecure about which baseball team you cheer for. Jeesh guys. We've got enough problems with our own team. Let them worry about theirs.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Aug 15, 2015 -> 05:12 AM) From the stories out there, his friends seem to have an extra negative influence on him. (Not a defense of Kane, just a general observation ) Well think about it...you are a normal dude in every way except you happened to have grown up as a childhood friend of Patrick Kane. Your life is still fairly ordinary, except on those nights when you get to be part of Kane's entourage. On those nights, you get in wherever you want to go, you get attention from women you would never get attention from, etc. If they truly had his best interests at heart, they would ensure he stays out of trouble. My guess is though, the alcohol starts flowing, they are having the time of their lives, and they forget about the best interests of Patrick Kane. On those nights, they have the best interests of themselves in mind. I can only imagine the kinds of trouble I would get into if I was friends with someone like Patrick Kane, let alone if I was Patrick Kane...

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 14, 2015 -> 09:55 AM) Listening to Hawk this year, he has been much more angry and vocal than in years past. He has had some moments where he took the team, players, and even coaches to task. Really? I think he has toned it down tremendously this year compared to previous years. -

QUOTE (Brian @ Aug 14, 2015 -> 03:36 AM) I love listening to other teams broadcasts, be it MLB.tv or Sirius radio. Hawk is easily the worst TV guy I have heard in the last 10 years since I started with MLB.tv/Extra Innings. I drove cross country a few years ago and had satellite radio and it was so refreshing to hear other teams radio broadcasts. No monotonous dull pbp guys. They actually talked about the game and described the action. Our 2 pbp guys are brutal compared to most others. You must like stale, boring, pc broadcasts then because that is what I hear from almost every other broadcast team. As for the radio guys, I don't disagree at all. -
QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Aug 14, 2015 -> 08:49 AM) So you want Flowers to throw to 1B after the runner has been called out and the play is dead? That doesn't make sense. No but if there is any reason for him to be uncertain about it, for instance, if the ball bounced and he is not sure he made the tag.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 13, 2015 -> 07:18 PM) If you don't want to read this whole post, just please tell me: How much do you pay for your suits? You attorneys probably have to buy a s***ton of them. Please give me the price you pay. Now read on if you wish ... My line of work doesn't require I wear suits or sportscoats like most jobs nowadays. But I need one or two for weddings/funerals, whatever. The suits I own are kind of worn and the pants are kind of tight even though I gave up pop and beer over a year ago. So I went to buy a new suit this week at a good, but not amazing, men's store. Nothing like Pennys/Kohls, a real men's suit store. Tell you the truth I didn't even check the price tags as the guy in the store helped me try on some charcoal black suits. He was a substandard salesman IMO especially for a decent men's store. I was just trying them on thinking how much I hate shopping when I found one that appeared suitable/good for purchase. So I tell the guy I'll take this one and look at the price tag and see it's 980 bucks. In my mind, that's a lot of money for a suit. Some people pay less for a used car. Not wanting to be cheap and not wanting to shop any longer I said I'd take it so he did the measurements, etc. So I'm getting ready to pay and feeling buyer's regret and I say, "Do you guys have any sales coming up? I'd hate to pay this and find out you have a big sale coming up Friday?" So the guy says, "It's actually 60 percent off on Thursday (I was shopping on Tuesday)." I said, "60 percent???" That's quite a bit. Can you hold it and I'll come back Thursday?" He said, "Sure." My question is: Would a GOOD salesperson have told the customer right off the bat: "Hey buddy a little tip. This same suit will be 60 percent off in 48 hours." Or does management frown on telling customers about upcoming sales? I went in today and the final bill with some shirt deals and tie was under 500 bucks. I felt much better than I did when the bill with tax would have escalated well over $1000. Am I a tightwad? Are suits under $1000 bucks lousy? Am I cheap? Do you have an opinion on my story and suits in general? Thank you. Greg, Buying a suit at a decent menswear store is definitely a ripoff. You did well to ask about the sale! Every man needs a decent suit. I'd guess you did a pretty good job with yours. One tip...your suit is either charcoal or black, but not charcoal black. Also, you should resume drinking beer.

To be fair, the analysis they did isn't particularly convincing. The weight ascribed to starting pitching is to be considered the same as an individual position? What Hawk said is certainly a bit ridiculous, but I don't think it is as nearly as ridiculous as one might initially suggest. The Royals have basically played 180 games of baseball at their current level. They've done it with a roster that is fairly unchanged from their previous 180 games of baseball or so, when they did pretty much suck. So is simply evaluating the rosters, position by position, and somewhat arbitrarily choosing an "edge," without really evaluating how big that edge is and cumulating them in any particularly logical manner, really any better of an analysis than what Hawk did? Baseball is by far the weirdest and most difficult sport to predict in regards to evaluating a paper roster versus on-field results. Utilizing an on-paper analysis to support those very results is therefore by definition, an inaccurate an ineffective manner for such an evaluation. This is part of what makes baseball great, to be honest. -
QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Aug 13, 2015 -> 10:37 AM) Unless she wants to accuse someone of kidnapping too, I don't see that as relevant at all. She us a grown woman and made the decision to go there. Oh I disagree.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Aug 13, 2015 -> 09:04 AM) the home plate ump screwed up and thats why I think he allowed Scioscia to complain. He either confirmed to Flowers that it was an out by a caught third strike and didnt need a throw to first, or said he was out on the tag. You could tell Flowers was ready to throw when he popped up, and then didnt for a reason. Yeah, the Angels' broadcasters mentioned that if they were to award him 1st base, then Robin would have a valid complaint because Flowers relied upon the umpire calling him out. I agree about letting Scioscia argue because they botched the situation. However, Robertson needs to focus on getting outs and less on what the opposing manager is doing.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 13, 2015 -> 07:13 AM) Bernstein reminds me a lot of Bill Maher at times--huge blowhard who will sneer at and shout down anyone and everything, but also a huge asshole himself with plenty of his own crappy personality traits, words and actions. I think the latter is sort of a prerequisite for the former.

QUOTE (OmarComing25 @ Aug 12, 2015 -> 08:18 PM) I don't really see it as showboating all that much, especially since he's always looking at his teammates when he does it. The stir the drink thing has been a nice little team bonding thing, and it's fostered camaraderie in the team. I like it. Your "integrity of the game" nonsense is a complete overreaction. Yeah, this guy needs to relax!

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Aug 12, 2015 -> 08:25 PM) He also got a lot of s*** for making a comment about A local weather girl hooking up with Patrick Sharp Ahh. Well, while he is a doucher, I'm not quite prepared to say he is "contributing to the rape culture." Let's not take all the fun out of life, now.

QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Aug 12, 2015 -> 08:06 PM) At the game, what happened? Ump called something I assumed out of the baseline. Did he call interference on Beckham wtf??? The Angels announcers are speculating he called interference on Ramirez for running into the runner, even though it is clear Ramirez did not touch him.

So as someone who doesn't live in Chicago, is it fair to presume we're talking about Bernstein referencing a reporter's "giant boobs"?
