QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Oct 14, 2014 -> 10:53 AM) One was playing his first full season in A ball and extremely young. The other was in AAA. Guys don't regularly have those type of numbers in AAA and regain their form. I'd have more faith if there was some sort of underlying issue and Sox had some form of track record at helping hitters with his issues. I agree he has some tools but he's lousy defensively, strikes out a lot and does not appear to be capable of hitting for much of an average, nor does he appear to be much of a OBP guy. In general, I find it extremely unlikely that he will provide anything but negative value. He did put together some good at bats in MLB in 2013, albeit in limited action. I think it's fair at his age to still hold out a little hope, although I think most are inclined to agree with you.

Kenny Williams a possible GM for Dodgers?

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Oct 14, 2014 -> 11:22 AM) KW's best jobs were with lower payroll. When the checking account expanded, so did his mistakes. It could be the same for Friedman. No one has the game figured out. Well, with more money comes more opportunity...and more opportunity to f*** up on a larger scale. -

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Oct 14, 2014 -> 11:20 AM) They said they have been talking for weeks. Talking about another GMs job while that GM is still employed my make him a bit of an outsider to other GMs. You still have to do what's best for your team and if that is dealing with the Dodgers, you still do it, but I bet there are more than a couple of GMs that don't think too highly of what he's done. Oh blah...they all do it, or would do it, and they know it. This is a cutthroat business and these guys are cutthroat businessmen. -

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Oct 14, 2014 -> 07:38 AM) Agreed. There's one favorite team and then you can kind of have a pet team (or teams) that change from year to year that you love watching. I think there is more of a tendency for this to happen when you don't live where the team you cheer for plays. I'm still a huge Bears fan, but since moving away, I notice not being constantly in the Bears incubator of water cooler talk, sports radio, local news, etc., sort of allows you to have more diverse interests. -

QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Oct 12, 2014 -> 08:19 PM) Cowboys have always had a great passing game thanks to Romo, Witten, and insert a WR here, but now with an actual running game and a competent defense, this team looks REAL good. 5-1. This is exciting. Jumping back on the bandwagon, I see.... -

QUOTE (Tex @ Oct 12, 2014 -> 06:31 AM) So I switched from my 20 year old Taylor Made bubble shafted driver to a Titleist 913D and seem to be giving up some distance in exchange for accuracy. The main issue seems to be I feel like that giant club head is hitting so much wind resistance, like a giant jib in front of a sailboat. Does that feeling go away? I had my players out on the range with our range finders targeting in our wedge distances, learning how to hit wedges from 30 to 80 yards with some accuracy. Afterwards it was bang the driver time. So I know the distances are accurate and I was hitting both drivers side by side. The 913D is more lofted, but the overall height of each shot was roughly the same. What I couldn't seem to judge was the shape. I'm not certain if the Taylor Made was a flatter overall trajectory and that the Titleist was peaking and dropping straighter down. Tex, I was in the same boat as you. I went from a Big Bertha warbird from 1995 to a Nike Covert Tour from 2013. That feeling will likely not go away, but you will get more accustomed to it. Basically, what you're getting is a lot better shots on your mis***s than with your Taylor Made.

QUOTE (bmags @ Oct 10, 2014 -> 07:35 AM) If the NFL had any understanding or handle of the situation, I don't think people would much care if the response was "We used to think that domestic violence issues were a private matter left to the police, now we understand our position in American culture and as role models and are dedicated to leading the charge against domestic violence" ... but because I'm not sure the NFL really understands what wrong is, they'll probably just try to cover it up and make it worse. Yeah, that is clearly something that shows their understanding is evolving. I agree. There has got to be some other concern on their part though. I refuse to believe they aren't wise enough to say something as obvious as that, in this day and age of damage control. My guess is they are concerned about the data they already have and the effect on their players and League if they make certain statements like this and what it means for them moving forward. Bottom line is, there is so much domestic violence and other stupid criminality occurring by players and other NFL employees that I am not sure they really can be leading the charge all the time. That consumes a lot of resources. -

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 10, 2014 -> 07:28 AM) I will at least say good for Angelo for coming clean. That being said, he will never work in professional football again after what he just said. Is this really news though? I mean, isn't this what we already knew? We knew there were hundreds of incidences of this, and we knew they weren't getting suspended for it...so he's just verbalizing what the numbers would show was happening. -
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Oct 9, 2014 -> 08:03 AM) The Sox said they will bring in veterans in the right situation. James Shields is 33 and going to command 4 years and likely some sort of committment (via option or vested option) to a 5th year. The last time the Sox gave that kind of contract out for a free agent pitcher was John Danks, and he was a much, much better candidate for a 5 year contract at that time and it has bitten them squarely on the ass. That is not the right situation. I'd give the Sox a 0.1% chance of signing James Shields so as to protect myself from flat out saying "They are not going to sign James Shields." Also, his price will just climb if he pitches well in the ALCS and/or WS, AND, why are we so arrogant to think he wouldn't just stay with the Royals?

QUOTE (Tex @ Oct 9, 2014 -> 07:45 AM) Tears in my eyes moment. My players who won that tournament last week were named Athletes of the Week by our local newspaper. I received the certificates in my mail box this morning. I'm planning on framing them and giving them at our team meeting tomorrow. Congrats again, Tex!

QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Oct 8, 2014 -> 01:32 PM) I get that, people are people. The work is totally different but knowing how to lead people is pretty transferable, and that job probably offered as wide of a variety of personalities to manage as any you've had. Yeah, it's just understanding how to balance time, priorities, motivate teams, DELEGATE, etc...not sure anything beats experience when it comes to learning those skills.

QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Oct 8, 2014 -> 01:18 PM) There isn't an immediate bump, it would be from (hopefully) getting a manager/supervisor position earlier. Yea I'm leaning towards this being not worth it right now, but I need to talk to my mentor and manager more. Both of them have encouraged me but who knows if that's just being supportive or if they both believe I need it (neither of them have it, and my mentor is a director which is telling imo). I'm a manager in my company, and I think having an advanced degree helped legitimize me to those who do not know me well, and it is certainly a big part of my knowledge base, but I'll be honest, the skills I learned managing Abercrombie & Fitch stores when I was 20 are still what I believe helps me out the most. And I know, that is humorous.

QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Oct 8, 2014 -> 12:43 PM) So is it a checkbox you need or so common it doesn't really make a difference as long as you're proving yourself? I know this is kind of company dependent, but trying to get more perspective. My thoughts right now are that at my company it may not make much of a difference, but for headhunters/recruiters it may make more of a difference as they may have a checkbox for initial screenings (moreso for first time managers). Yeah, I dunno...I have not heard a whole lot of buzz about MBAs for like 5-7 years. Not saying it wouldn't be helpful, but I don't know that it's the boost it once was...

QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Oct 8, 2014 -> 12:24 PM) They pay 5k per year and anything above that 50%. So rough calculations on an estimated time frame would be around $30k over 3 years. It seems like MBAs are a dime a dozen these days...

QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Oct 8, 2014 -> 10:43 AM) I've been doing a modified(meaning I give myself a weekend day for drinky and something different to eat) version of that for a few weeks now. You'll obviously have your cravings but it's honestly not the hardest thing in the world to do. The fruit keeps me sane. Workouts this week have been tough...by the end, I am dragging, especially today when I did plyo....I'm just wondering if I have enough glycogen or glucose stores or whatever to sustain workouts that intense...then I'm supposed to eat mashed pumpkin or some s*** afterwards....right

QUOTE (bmags @ Oct 7, 2014 -> 02:35 PM) Honestly Jay would still be frustrating but I have to think if we hired Bruce Arians rather than Trestman we would be talking about a 4-1 team right now. I haven't seen 60 minutes of inspired football from a Trestman team. It is always 2 quarters that are sometimes good enough to win. I still think of what was a tremendous coaching class that year we picked wrong. I've lost all faith that Trestman can run a team. As Thibs growls, they have enough to win. They aren't though. Arians was my choice...I do like Trestman...but I just see sort of the same thing I saw from Lovie...genius on his side of the ball, but not really able to provide the whole package of leadership needed out of a HC.
