Is Ventura the worst manager in the history of MLB?
iamshack replied to sin city sox fan's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (scs787 @ Aug 12, 2014 -> 10:05 AM) Isn't that what game threads are for? It has been, but as they are locked and archived after every game, people tend to post new threads about the latest offense. -
Tony Stewart purposefully ran someone over?

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Aug 12, 2014 -> 09:52 AM) Where did this happen? New York? In Illinois, that civil case is VERY defensible. The jury would be asked to assess fault between Stewart and Ward. If Ward was determined to be 51% or more at fault, he gets nothing. If it's 50% or below, the judgment gets reduced accordingly. I don't see how a jury could find him 50% or less at fault. He got out of his car and walked straight into the middle of a car race. The car before Stewart's nearly hit him. Without his own negligence, Stewart doesn't have the opportunity to be "negligent." And that's on top of the question of whether Stewart WAS negligent to begin with. It would depend on when he first saw Ward outside of his vehicle. There's certainly no duty to "reduce speed to avoid an accident" while in the middle of a race like that. edit: looks like New York is comparative negligence state, so take the percent of Ward's fault and reduce the judgment. It could be 1% and he's still get it. Although you would still have to prove Stewart did something wrong here. From the link above: One would think Ward violated a rule in exiting his vehicle, walking onto the track, pointing and seeking a confrontation with moving vehicles, presumably Stewart in this case. Such a rule would be designed to protect participants (namely Ward, but other drivers as well) from serious injury. One could also claim that Stewart's action was deliberate, willful, or with a reckless disregard for the safety of Ward so as to cause injury to Ward...however, that is much more difficult to prove given what we know today. So given what we know today, the case might actually be stronger against Ward (as a posthumous defendant) than for Ward (as a posthumous plaintiff). -

Pretty good law journal aricle on the topic of tort liability in the context of a sporting event -

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 12, 2014 -> 08:54 AM) Yeah, with the difference is burden of proof, there might actually be some merit to a civil suit if they can prove any kind of issue with Stewart, though again, there will have to some better camera work or eyewitness testimony to prove something. Well, it's not just that...I think there is a different sort of perspective given to the event given that it occurred within the context of an actual race. The fact that they were under a yellow flag does change things a bit, but it all happened very quickly. The argument would likely be whether the drivers had enough time to adjust their driving and exhibit more control over their vehicles as a result of the yellow caution flag or whether it all happened too quickly. But it's probably not the same standards of "recklessness" that might be evaluated in a normal context, such as driving on the street. -

BS guys...this thread has just turned into the default thread for discussing our manager. Do you want someone to start a thread every other game about each different degree of Robin's incompetence? I'm unwilling to excuse his many levels of incompetence simply because this team wouldn't be making a postseason appearance had he been competent. You'd like to see a pattern of improvement with his lineup construction, bullpen management, fundamentals, ability to manage workload and injuries, substitutions, etc., over the past 3 years. You'd like to feel comfortable that when the time is right, and the window is here, and the talent and the chemistry and all that is right, that he will be prepared to help aid us winning big games...i don't feel that way about him....like, at all. Maybe I am wrong, and it won't matter either way, because the skills he does excel at, such as clubhouse management, ego management, etc., are good enough that he can get a good team going in the right direction and stay out of their way (as the Hawkeroo would say), but I just don't believe in him for this job. -
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Aug 12, 2014 -> 07:43 AM) Get to hit these bad boys today, right now they have c-taper shafts for a lower ball flight, I am interested to see where that gets me. I've got project pxi's that do the same...I actually enjoy it because it gets windy out here, and I naturally hit the ball really high...I don't have much problem stopping the ball on the greens even with the lower ball flight. Only thing is you may want to play a ball you can spin a little more since your ball flight will be lower (think ProV1 instead of ProV1X).

QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Aug 11, 2014 -> 06:27 PM) Sprint car racer Jeremy Campbell: "You want to try to get out of your car as soon as possible,” Campbell said. “Because in case the fuel line does break or in case there's some kind of fire. I always try to get out.” Interesting. Is it your belief that he got out because he was concerned about those issues? -
QUOTE (gatnom @ Aug 11, 2014 -> 04:14 PM) Thanks for the opinions guys. Are there any specific shops to avoid (or go to) as far as looking for clubs or fitting goes? Or, are they all pretty much equally reputable? Well, pga pros are generally going to have a lot of experience with fitting...but they are not infallible either. Do some research, perhaps on yelp or something...

It looks like he was rumored to be dead on May 21st of this year and in February of last year as well.

QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Aug 11, 2014 -> 03:13 PM) Nope. But I'll go ahead and tell you exactly what I think happened so you can stop being so wrong every time. I think he tried to either scare the s*** out of the kid, or he tried to fling dirt and rocks up on him. I DO NOT believe he tried to hit the kid. I certainly DO NOT believe he tried to kill the kid. I think it was bad luck that he happened to hit the kid and he probably feels horrible about it. The kid was very dumb from walking towards the moving cars, and Stewart was extremely reckless as well. Both were at fault, both deserve some blame in what happened. Never happens without both of their actions. There. Now feel free to reply without pretending like you think you know my viewpoint on what happened. That's all fine and good, and I tend to have a similar thought process, but I certainly don't pretend to know what he could have done or what he should have done without having ever been in a race car before. -

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 11, 2014 -> 02:18 PM) Doesn't he have the right to get out of his car when there's a yellow caution flag out? Not to walk into the middle of the track and toward oncoming traffic, but at least get out under his own power...? I'm sure there are certain protocols to follow and one of the more important protocols is most likely not to cross the track on foot during a race unless absolutely necessary (your car is on fire or exploding and there is nowhere else to evacuate)? -

What happens if Stewart veers out of the way of this dude walking on the track and rolls his own car and gets seriously injured or dies? Or hits another car and someone else gets hurt or dies. Ultimately, you can look back and say "But for this guy taking the extremely reckless measure of exiting his car and walking on a dirt race track in the middle of a race, none of this likely happens." -
Check globalgolf.com too...really good source for used gear.

QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Aug 11, 2014 -> 01:44 PM) Then what is the point of living!?!? WHAT IS THE POINT OF LIVING!!!!! I'm not saying you shouldn't cheer; just that you shouldn't agonize over the justification to do so, since ultimately your doing so has no bearing on the result. -

As I said last year....guess what? It doesn't matter what you cheer for, because whatever happens is going to happen regardless! -

QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Aug 11, 2014 -> 12:11 PM) And to ride high on the track in the direction of the confrontation during a caution? It's pretty difficult to make any judgments about the line he took without seeing what might have been in front of him coming into the frame of the video...who knows if he was trying to avoid other traffic that had slowed as a result of the accident and the yellow caution or not. -
QUOTE (gatnom @ Aug 11, 2014 -> 12:04 PM) Does anybody here have any advice for buying a new set of clubs? Specific clubs to get or avoid? A good place to get them? I just got back into golf this summer, and the only clubs I have are the ones my parents bought for me when I was about 12. Yes. I am assuming you are a relatively high-handicapper if you haven't played since you were 12. You want to get something with a cavity back and perimeter weighting so that the club has a reasonable level of forgiveness on off-center strikes. You probably want to get fitted as well. My advice would be to spend the $50 or so it costs at a golf store to get fitted (even better if you can find a PGA professional) and then try and find a slightly used set and get them altered so they fit you correctly. Unless you have some crazy specs, in which it might be impossible to buy a used set and get them properly fitted. In that case you would want to just suck it up and order a new set if you are at all serious about playing. But most people have relatively stock specs or it doesn't make a huge difference when you are just getting back into the game. Golf clubs are like cars in that they depreciate massively as soon as you "drive" them off the lot. Check ebay for sure.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Aug 11, 2014 -> 11:56 AM) People estimate he made 12 million with Tiger, 10% of Tiger's ~120 million in earnings. I find that a little difficult to believe, but maybe. He's doing pretty well with Adam Scott as well.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Aug 11, 2014 -> 11:12 AM) They all have different deals. Some have a set salary + part of the winnings, some just have a percent of the winnings. The average caddie doesn't make a ton, maybe 6 figures in a good year. Your Fluff's and Steve Williams' probably make a few hundred grand in the good years. Plus i'm sure they get some really nice presents. I'd guess Stevie makes a bit more than that.
-
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 11, 2014 -> 11:00 AM) Don't the caddies get about 2.5 or 3% of their total purses? Is it 5%? Something like that. I think it's as high as 10% sometimes...not sure though.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Aug 11, 2014 -> 10:48 AM) Feherety was on DP this morning and absolutely scoffs at the notion that Tiger is a quitter. Also blames Haney for what has happened to him injury wise and kept reiterating the fact that Tiger shouldn't be on the course and he's purely willing himself to be out there. Says he knows Tiger isn't a quitter and only reason he didn't stop playing on Friday was because he's trying to will through it, potentially play in Davis cup, and is aware of the media bashing him as a "quitter". Feherety called it pure poppycock. A lot of people have criticized Haney for Tiger's downfall. He gets a lot of criticism for having an "overengineered" swing. He was pretty much on top of his game and decided he needed to leave Butch and make a swing change. Was pretty strange. Tiger is definitely not a quitter. But he has a massive ego (rightfully so) and an enormous standard to uphold. I think he's having a lot of difficulty accepting his current results and his current place in golf, and he's frankly embarrassed by it. He should do what he said he needs to do, and that is to get healthy and then get back in the gym and get strong again. Then he needs to play a lot of golf. He should also probably suck up his pride and go back to Butch.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 11, 2014 -> 10:47 AM) Jason Day almost completely disappeared from the coverage. They seemed to really want to force Ernie Els into the story...that was interesting, although he was never legitimately in contention, he did play a pretty darned solid round except for one hiccup. Stenson, rightly, got a lot of time...but he's about as exciting as Vijay Singh. I'm sure they were happy with the Austrian golfer didn't have to be featured as much as he also disappeared after the turn. Yeah, Day just couldn't trust his grip...he's fighting a hook and was playing tentatively all weekend. He was interviewed prior to Saturday's round and said he thought they had cured it with a more neutral grip adjustment, then went out and proceeded to hook his drive left of the creek on 2....and fought it the rest of the way. Didn't stop Baker-Finch from talking about how many hours he practices his short game or where he would be if he had just made more 10-12 foot putts. Els had it really going early and they wanted him to post a score that would put pressure on the leaders coming down the stretch. He, just like everyone not named Rory, couldn't keep the momentum going on the back nine though. Had forgotten about Stenson....Stenson is intriguing because he is very colorful. He has a tendency to hit some very "interesting" shots under pressure, or to break a club over his knee every know and again. Crazy how they mentioned his caddy has a Ferrari....Stenson made $21 million just in golf earnings last year though, so I can see how his caddy drives a Ferrari.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 11, 2014 -> 10:34 AM) Well, that's human nature. This tourney had the best rating for PGA Championship since, you guessed it, 2009 when YE Yang shockingly took down Tiger. The Masters is generally around a 7.5 rating, I think the 2009 was 6.8 and this one must have been in the low or mid 6's. That said, McIlroy isn't an American, and it's like comparing tennis when Roger Federer or Nadal are dominating with the years of McEnroe and Connors, or Sampras and Agassi, the Williams Sisters, etc. You can appreciate how great McIlroy is, how far he hits the ball (especially the scorcher to the green that preceded the eagle, the only player on that green in 2 Sunday)...but I would imagine 75% of the people tuning in were still rooting for Mickelson or Fowler. It was interesting...you could see the nationalistic biases coming out in the broadcasting...Baker-Finch was talking up Jason Day every chance he could get. Feherety was cheering on Rory. The crowd favorites were Mickelson and Fowler, the two Americans. When Rory was lining up the eagle putt on 10, someone made the comment that the place would be up for grabs if he knocked it in. There were definitely cheers, but it wasn't nearly the house coming down like they thought it would be.
