  1. QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Jul 31, 2014 -> 04:18 PM) Played today, shot 110. Not terrible for me. Yes, I realize 110 to some of you is awful, but I've only recently picked up golf in the past couple of years and haven't played a ton. Some bogeys, decent amount of double bogeys. Missed a bunch of close par putts, but then some holes where the wheels fall off and put up an 8 or 9, some OB balls etc. Driver was brutal today. Highlight of the day was making 2 putts off the rough and in, each from about 15-20 feet away. Learned that I need a 2/3 hybrid. I don't have a ton of distance off the tee (when I can actually find a fairway, but slice isn't as bad as it was), which is fine, but I need something for a shot or two up the fairway besides my 3 iron or 4 hybrid. Also Rock the more I read about your lob wedges, the more I think I'll need one of those for shorter shots that need some loft, not just using a pitching wedge. I also need to do what you talked about which is practice some bump and runs etc. Do you have a sand wedge?
  2. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jul 31, 2014 -> 02:38 PM) Too much on his plate I guess - banging Paulina Gretzky, winning big golf tournaments, making millions, etc. I heard rumors of cocaine. You know it had to be something major if he is pulling away right before the PGA.
  3. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jul 31, 2014 -> 02:13 PM) The Tigers spend spend and spend with zero rings to show for it. Can't blame them for trying.
  4. Dustin Johnson taking a leave from professional golf to overcome "personal challenges"
  5. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 31, 2014 -> 01:27 PM) This team is so weird. It seems like whenever I'm watching or paying attention, they are putting together a nice run or a win streak and they're in every game, yet they're 3 games below .500. Again, it's weird, but this team feels like it should be 5-7 games over .500 right now instead. The Robin Ventura Effect...
  6. QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 31, 2014 -> 01:38 PM) If anything, I would have expected Cameron to say Price is well worth it at $20 million. He is. He's a 5 WAR pitcher. That's worth at least $25 million on a one year contract. But I think his point is this: Price at $20 million is a lot of money, regardless of how much money you have or how valuable he actually is. Paying him that money AND giving up 6 years of control of good prospects is not worth it. You also have to take into account that the Rays aren't exactly rich. $20 million is like 1/4 of their payroll. Where was this logic then when the Tigers convinced Texas to take Prince and give them Kinsler?
  7. I just want to say that Robin made a brilliant move there to put Castellanos on to get to Avila.
  8. Jeesh, Cards could be in on him too.
  9. QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Jul 31, 2014 -> 09:50 AM) So Boston has gotten Cespedes and Craig in their lineup now. With Ortiz. And Napoli. And Pedroia. Craig has really struggled to hit for any power at all for the last year.
  10. QUOTE (chisoxfan310 @ Jul 31, 2014 -> 09:18 AM) Its like a few years ago when Ubaldo made a start for Colorado and then got trade during the game. Him starting doesn't mean he can't get traded. He can go to a team that doesn't mind him making his first start in 5 days. That move was widely criticized.
  11. QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 31, 2014 -> 08:19 AM) Did the A's seriously just re-acquire somebody they let go THIS year for Milone? Ugh. Sox are going to struggle against Milone for years to come, I think I know that much. Twins got him for basically nothing. Who cares...at this point, you're trying to win a World Series. Every little bit helps.
  12. QUOTE (SouthsideDon48 @ Jul 30, 2014 -> 07:26 PM) Hey guys, how do you hand-wash your dishes? The reason why I ask is because my fiance and I disagree over how dishes should be washed. She thinks the way I wash dishes is gross, wastes soap, and wastes water, and I think the way she washes dishes is gross and not cleaning anything. Here's the way I hand-wash dishes: I use my hands, my hands are washed before I wash the dishes. I use either an sos pad or a sponge to get food and crud off dishes, and then I apply dish soap directly to what I'm washing and lather it up with the soap until I get suds all over the place, then I rinse it with hot running water which is running at all times. As I'm rinsing it off, I rely on my sense of touch to make sure dishes are no longer greasy. How she hand-wash dishes: She fills up one side of the sink with water and soap, and puts all the dirty dishes in the soapy water. She takes whatever she is washing out of the soapy water, wipes it with a "clean" dish rag, rinses it over running water, and and that's it. She doesn't apply any soap directly to whatever she's washing. :-x So... who's style of washing do you prefer and how do you wash the dishes when washing by hand? I do it the way you do it, but that is incredibly wasteful. Before dishwashers were very commonplace, most people did it the way your fiancée does it.
  13. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jul 30, 2014 -> 02:45 PM) Reports on twitter though that Lackey will definitely be moved because he asked to be traded. Only making $500,000 next year. Right...I guess I meant the Red Sox will demand some pretty solid pieces.
  14. QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Jul 30, 2014 -> 02:39 PM) What? That's a bad contract for the pitcher he is at this point. Cost-controlled doesn't mean anything when the cost is bad. Why do you think it's been so hard to trade Dunn the past few years? But he's cost-controlled! All things being equal, you're taking Peavy for an expiring contract before you're trading for Danks. If there's so much value to Danks, why are the Sox trying to move him? Why aren't the Yankees giving up the farm for him if it's such a fair trade and he's "cost-controlled?" The Sox are trying to get out from a bad contract, that's all this trade is about. His contract is WAY out of line with his production. A guy that was worth .9 WAR this year is worth 14 mil? Plus for the next two years? No. Take a look at this list. Everyone ahead of him is making 14 mil+? That's the only way that it would be "not really that far out of line with his production." He's 7th from last. http://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=...r=&players= Yeah, but how many of those guys are available today? I don't think anyone is suggesting anyone is going to "give up the farm" for Danks. I think what some have said is that Danks has some value. That they wouldn't just extricate themselves from the contract for nothing if they could today. I'm not sure where I stand, honestly...what if we win the next two games? We'd be 5 back of the Tigers with 50 games remaining.
  15. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jul 30, 2014 -> 02:31 PM) Absolutely, but there are better options out there if you're going to give up decent prospects. All the Astros guys, all the Rockies guys, and even John Lackey are better short term options if you're willing to pay the talent to upgrade. If you balk at those prices, you'd settle for Danks' contract, but it's only worth settling for if you pay way less for it than you'd have to pay to get the others. Yeah, Hahn's job is to figure out where the sweetspot lies. As for Lackey, he'll be a tough get I think...the Red Sox hold an option on him next year for the league minimum.
  16. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jul 30, 2014 -> 02:02 PM) But what people don't understand is that in a trade, you're asking a team to give you talent for the surplus value of the contract. John Danks has no surplus value at all at $14m per year. Anyone could just sign a market rate asset in the offseason for that. So if you're considering paying Danks the next couple years at that rate, you'd at best take those years for free, because that's the worst case scenario for what it would cost to acquire someone like him in free agency. You don't give up significant talent just for the right to pay a guy every penny he's worth, unless he's some one-of-a-kind talent that isn't available on the open market. Agreed, but you're also trying to exploit their desire to win now. There was risk taken when that contract was signed, but you did it because you want to avoid being vulnerable in the trade market or to future market conditions. If they come a knockin', you want to try and exploit their immediate need under the circumstances.
  17. QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Jul 30, 2014 -> 02:05 PM) Don't worry about it because if that happens it means he's one of the best players in MLB. I know, but it takes a bit of the luster off that contract figure.
  18. Crap, I just realized Abreu can opt into arbitration and out of his guaranteed salary after three years...
  19. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 30, 2014 -> 12:44 PM) Gamethreads are pretty well known for 100% strategic accuracy (assuming if something didn't work out, any alternative would 100% of the time). Of course the "mistake" isn't pointed out until after the fact. That's not true.
  20. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 30, 2014 -> 12:35 PM) Message board managing is like paper trading. Everyone makes millions when they paper trade. All amateur managers would win 100+ games a year if they were calling the shots. While generally true, that isn't reason enough to dismiss all criticism. Especially in this day and age in sports, where quite a bit of value has come from those outside of the those who have played the game.
  21. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jul 30, 2014 -> 12:33 PM) I just want you in happy threads. There is no interesting discussion in the happy threads.
