QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jun 12, 2012 -> 01:06 PM) I travel often for work and I now live in a new state. It's a critical app for me. Yeah, I can understand that...and I understand it if it is a high priority for you when it comes to making your decision about purchasing a phone. But the outrage in here is ridiculous...some people are acting as if it is a breathing apparatus and we're asking you to walk around on Mars.

QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Jun 12, 2012 -> 01:06 PM) Yep. And Apple also underproduces their products at launch so that way people can talk about how fast they sold out of items. If people hear something is selling out fast, they are going to assume it must be awesome, and then want to get it. Oh goodness.....you're so full of s***.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 12, 2012 -> 11:24 AM) Dempster has flat out said he doesn't want to play for the White Sox. When did he say this? I heard he has recently implied we would be one of his first choices...could this have been related to our former manager? -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 12, 2012 -> 09:57 AM) So I got a call from a recruiter today... Trying to decide how to do this one. Oh dooooo tell!

QUOTE (TaylorStSox @ Jun 12, 2012 -> 09:15 AM) It's one thing to never have the velocity. It's another thing to have the velocity and lose it. Most pitcher's can't adapt and reinvent themselves when they lose their velocity. I wouldn't touch Liriano with a 10 ft. pole. One thing the Sox could do is move Floyd for prospects and then flip those prospects for a guy like Volquez. You're still going to have a hole in the rotation, but Volquez probably has more upside than Floyd. I don't see it happening though. We could give SD their own prospects back for Volquez -

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 12, 2012 -> 08:38 AM) This "What's wrong with Liriano" fangraphs piece is worth adding to the list. I'll highlight the buried lede: I refuse to buy into the velocity being a huge reason...you don't need to throw the ball 92+ to pitch with his stuff. What he needs is consistency...his stuff is easily good enough to win even with a sub-90 fastball. -

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 12, 2012 -> 09:32 AM) Well, we already had cannibalism and Kenny Williams piloting a plane in a scene out of Eight Below or The Grey, lol. Marcum, Greinke, DeLaRosa or Liriano? I'd go for DeLaRosa because he has an $11 million option for next year, so he won't cost nearly as much...on the other hand, it's like acquiring another version of Gavin Floyd, mentally. However, I have faith that Cooper can, at least in the short-term, maxmimize results from nearly every pitcher with pretty good stuff...at least starting pitchers. Liriano would be awfully tempting, but you'd be buying high after just 2-3 starts and could just as easily see him crater and take down your entire team behind in the wake. However, just from a fan's perspective and someone who is sick and tired of seeing Floyd and Humber get their brains get beaten in, I'd love to see what happens when you pair Cooper with Liriano and also have AJ, Sale and Danks around him as a support group. I'd love Liriano...especially since he could probably learn some things since he has a very similar repertoire to Sale... -

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 12, 2012 -> 09:22 AM) If he was, then I want Kim Ng, just to prove a woman can use the same tools at everyone's disposal to win a World Series title. We're always on the cutting edge in this department. It will be interesting to see which comes first, female president or female GM. The president part COULD come as early as 2016 or not in my lifetime, more or less 30-40 years from now... And in a stunning twist, Caulfield changes the subject from baseball rebuilding humor to discussing the first female President! -

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 12, 2012 -> 08:15 AM) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Campeonato_Uruguayo_de_Rugby Very bad example. Old Christians was like the NY Yankees of Uruguyan rugby. They won the championship again the next season, after the 1972 crash. Look at all their championships in the 1970's, they were actually better AFTER the crash. Just goes to show you there isn't all that much to worry about! -

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 12, 2012 -> 09:04 AM) It'd save them a million or two and they'd get something back for him rather than having him become a FA. I get the emotional side, but if the Sox offered him a legit minor league piece, wouldn't he pretty much have to? No. There would be other suitors for Liriano...I am pretty convinced there would be three teams just in our division that would be interested...

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jun 12, 2012 -> 08:02 AM) What do you do when you rent cars in other cities? Due to my parole restrictions, I am not allowed to visit other cities. No, honestly, I don't travel much...before I had navigation in my car I used google maps and had to actually scroll through the turns manually...heroically I was able to pull it off, but it wasn't easy. Grace of God...

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 12, 2012 -> 09:01 AM) Close. That's what happened to Knute Rockne, except it was the Flint Hills, further to the south. And the Uruguayan rugby team in the Andes...they had to do a complete rebuild after they ate one another. Edit: This is in terribly poor taste, but I think the team would understand it is necessary to make the point to Caulfield. -
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jun 12, 2012 -> 08:57 AM) In all seriousness, a coworker drove us to lunch a while back and used a garmin device to get us to a new spot we hadn't eaten at. As we were driving I looked at the awful UI of the device and wondered why the heck would anyone have one of these since my Galaxy S II had a much better display and an exponentially better looking UI...and for free. I couldn't understand how garmin and its competitors were still around and then I remembered there are millions of iPhone users out there. Yeah, instead of buying a Garmin device, I went and bought a new car. Damn iPhone.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 12, 2012 -> 08:53 AM) http://sports.yahoo.com/news/10-degrees--j...free-agent.html Free agents available...status update/rankings: Greinke Brandon McCarthy Shawn Marcum (probably doesn't have good enough stuff to survive USCF in summer) RA Dickey (unlikely to be avail) Jorge DeLaRosa (more typical Cooper possibility) expensive enough that he wouldn't cost nearly as much, also with an option for 2013, similar to Gavin Scott Baker they traded Delmon Young to the Tiggers last year, but isn't he yet another version of Gavin? perhaps Cooper has identified some of his flaws from watching him so frequently Francisco Liriano...wild card 3B Youkilis Mark Reynolds (if Orioles fade, but not a good pairing with Dunn in same line-up) Polanco (is he done already?, won't cost much but not sure that he's an upgrade, familiar with AL Central from time with Tiggers) Eric Chavez (probably couldn't handle everyday duty) Stephen Drew OR Yuniesky Betancourt if they felt either one could adapt quickly to play 3B Catchers Napoli (too expensive and risky, will want 4 year deal, probably will at least try to get Napoli Lite out of Flowers first) Doumit Iannetta Nothing much to get excited about, Doumit might be the most likely option if AJ's gone and they're not confident in Flowers/Phegley to handle the position. Iannetta's not worth $5 million +, might as well go with the youngsters. Marcum certainly has the stuff...whether he can put it together or not is another question. I'd have to think Terry Ryan would need to be s***face plastered in order to trade us Liriano...

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 12, 2012 -> 07:40 AM) Not this year, referring to why they clearly would be in rebuilding mode beginning in 2013, barring some more miracles. Yeah, I understood what you were saying...and I'm sure if they bought out Peavy's contract, traded Floyd, and Sale was out for the year because of elbow problems, that we would just promote 3 SPs from Birmingham that are horrendous and pocket the 30 million we saved by not paying Jake or Gavin. -

QUOTE (greg775 @ Jun 11, 2012 -> 11:47 PM) The team has had so many stinkers at home (including this year with the losing record at home) that a lot of diehard fans have stopped going. That's my take. It's easy to justify not going. Let's see, hubby, wife, 2 kids go and spend 120 on tickets, 32 bucks on beer (two each), 10 bucks on pop, 10 bucks on popcorn, 20 bucks on parking, 40 bucks on merchandise. That equals about 230 bucks. They can go to a minor league game for a baseball fix for what, 40-60 bucks total? I mean, I also think the Sox will fade, but I actually would want to go to a game right now if I lived in Chicago. I'm shocked that you would take this position, Greg. Have you stated this position before? I don't think I had any idea you were even interested in the cost of attending our games! Especially considering that you live so close to the ballpark, and would otherwise be attending so many games if not for the price-gouging scandal in our midst! In fact, I heard that JR was actually seen holding a large Irish family at gunpoint outside of a local church forcing them to fork over their grocery money! -

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 12, 2012 -> 12:20 AM) Lose Peavy. Sale doesn't or can't stay healthy. Probably lose Floyd. That leaves John Danks, who's paid like a #2 starter but hasn't performed at that level this year (due to injury, perhaps) or really on a (half-season or longer) consistent basis since 2008. That's the worst-case scenario. Of course, nobody knows how long Sale will last. But, even if he is the next Randy Johnson, we have to replace one of the top 10 pitchers in baseball in Jake Peavy...and that's VERY unlikely to come from our own system. Can we find another Humber in Mr. Quintana? Perhaps, perhaps not, early signs are encouraging. But it's hard to see the team biting on Gavin Floyd's 2013 option at $9.5 million at this exact moment in time. Hopefully that will change or he can be traded for a younger version of Gavin, but that's IFFY at best. Well if you want to take 3 SPs away from some of the other teams, I'll bet they'd be s*** out of luck too. Let's take Justin Verlander/Max Scherzer/Doug Fister away from the Tigers and see how good they are... I don't get this line of reasoning. -

QUOTE (Marty34 @ Jun 11, 2012 -> 07:26 PM) The Sox future isn't all that much more sketchy without Viciedo than it is with. If you can get a Grienke for something other than Viciedo, do it, but if it takes him so be it provided they can replace his production this year (Youk.) Get to the postseason this year because Sale's elbow might just be start-to-start much less year-to-year. I'd only trade Viciedo in a deal where the guy I got back was going to be under team control for awhile (if that means resigning the player, fine), but I'm not dealing him for someone that will be here for 3 months. Otherwise, I don't quite get why folks see such a long rebuilding process (if any at all). I get the lack of quality position player prospects. I also see us continually find ways to make it work and stay competitive. I don't know how anyone can say with any certainty that there is a lengthy rebuilding ahead in the face of what we are watching right now. If we can shore up this rotation and put something worth a s*** at 3b, this team is every bit as balanced and talented as we've seen here.
